I believe he is a lot older than 29 and we selected him at the end of the last purple patch of his career. He looks finished to me.

To be honest, getting among top rank is very good, but being there for a long period is far more difficult. If he performs even remotely close to what he has done in his first 10 test, then he will stay near top for a long period. You are pretty sure that he will keep doing what he is doing, and many other posters are not too sure about. Let's see where he stands after 2-3 years.
Not too long ago, many posters in PP used to argue that Ali is the best ODI bowler because he got to rank 1 quickly. Now he is at rank 8. Example is not to show that Ali is a poor ODI bowler, but it's very hard to remain at top and if you can remain at top for a long period then you belong in elite category. It's early days for Ali and he has time.
You are convinced that Abbas belongs to that category. Many international players also think the same so you are not alone, but many want to see more than 10 tests to come to that conclusion. It's just difference in opinion and we are always going to have that.
I will not put him anywhere close to Steyn based on 10 tests. Let's see if I am am proven wrong or right in coming years.
Can we all please acknowledge the ppers that have consistently argued he is an average uk type seamer. Doesn’t have any tricks up his sleeve no speed no outswinger and not even that metronomic.
We were right to bench him for Brisbane.
Good post , and good thread by Hawkeye as well,
It is always better to be cautious till one complete tour is done..
But if we are cautious we become too politically correct and not exciting![]()

?? that as an insult. Umesh is a fantastic bowler. best bowler in Asian conditions vs Quality teams. abbas fodder only performs against crap teams.Umesh Yadav >>>>> M.Abbas
He is on his last legs. The upcoming overseas cycle will end his and Yasir’s career.

30 years old today!
Big series in England coming for him after Bangladesh Test
What a thread by Hawkeye
Considering the timing of this thread when Abbas was actually looking like a world beater is particularly impressive.
Thank you.
The mass wrist slitting that happened here when Abbas didn't play the 1st Test, you'd think we made a blunder by benching him.
It was, in fact, a favor to Abbas. Turned him into a McGrath overnight among the average PPer.
Mohammad Abbas ends up on 6/33 today
Mohammed Abbas takes a 10-fer! 6/33 in the first innings, 4/39 in the second.
Graeme smith made an interesting observation during the India-SA test series last year. He said that the Saffers always wanted Vernon Philander to operate at an average speed of 132 kph to be effective in all conditions and philander's was comfortably around 4-5 kph less than that mark. Mind you that's just to be effective on unhelpful surfaces with the likes of Morkel/Steyn/Rabada bowling with him. Abbas too has always been around the 79_
-80 mph range even back in 2018. He has a similar height and bowls similar lengths to philander and has a similar skillset. It's just the pace that's a little too slow. McGrath even in his last Ashes around 2007 was still bowling close to that 82 mph mark on average , was much taller and was well past it by then. These comparisons with McGrath for every line-length bowler need to stop. A post 2005 McGrath is probably better than the likes of vern, Abbas etc.
