Mohammad Amir's poor bowling statistics since the 2017 Champions Trophy

Should Mohammad Amir be picked for the 2019 World Cup, even if he doesn't play any ODIs v England?

Mohammad Amir since his match-winning spell vs India in the Champions Trophy:

Matches: 8
Overs: 59
Wickets: 3
Average: 79.33
Economy: 4.03

if he does well against india, then we can put it down to being lazy.

It happens.

I remember on India's tour to SL in 2017, Bhuvi played 3 matches without getting a single wicket. And then in the 4th game he got a 5fer.

Sometimes its just a matter of luck or something.

How many (opening) bowlers have an eco rate of 4? That is world class.

Yes he can and should strike more but he gives great control up front.

3 of those matches were against Zim, 1 against HK
Of the 4 matches against NZ, he gave up more than 6 RPO in 2 games

So really, in perspective, the economy isn't that great either.

Something's gotta give with Amir.
Admittedly Amir has bowler well, but he can't just be carried if he's not producing. Especially when you have guys like Shaheen and Junaid sitting on the bench

At some point, people are going to run out of excuses for Amir.

You expect your best bowlers to perform every game - not just once in a blue moon. Did Wasim, Waqar, imran, Shoaib or even second tier bowlers do so poorly? And games against minnows are the best chance to improve your average and wicket column.

Amir can't pick and choose games to perform - he has to deliver all the time. He is supposed to lead the attack.

That's ok, 7-8 matches don't matter. Amir is a very good bowler, of course not extraordinary as his fan boys would like to believe. Having said that, he's one cricketer about whom, I as a cricket fan, can't care less where his career goes. He's a dirty cricketer and lucky to be playing international cricket. And no matter whatever happens in future, you will never find him in any major cricketers dream XI.

Extremely poor returns. When you play against minnow teams, you are expected to strike more than being economical.

Since his return he has had a good ECO rate overall. Even in T20s.

I agree he needs to strike but he gives away few runs overall.

Amir is very overhyped. He can't be relied upon to win matches for Pakistan or even contribute on a consistent basis.

Big match bowler really.

Likes to turn up when it actually matters. Can’t fault the guy, just doesn’t seem to want it as bad on the average day

The standout statistic for a premier fast bowler should not be economy. We are settling for mediocrity.

The match against India is his "big stage". Question is what we should de with hin if he fails to impress this time around.

Really? You can't fault a guy who can't be bothered to give his best when he is representing his country?

It clearly ain't working with Azhar Mahmood.

Rest/drop him so that he can contact others like Waqar who have helped him in the past.

I think he only gives it his all in important matches.

In other matches, even if HE WANTS TO, his body just doesnt respond and his mind seems discoordinated with his body.

The question ONLY really for us is :-

If Amir helps us win the World Cup final.. do we carry him to the final or do we drop him and just play him in the World Cup final?

We play him and win the cup.
When ever he speaks about the WC he feels the passion.

When ever he speaks about the WC he feels the passion.

But he will be useless till the final or at least semi final.

So we carry him, in essence.

I can live with that I guess as long as there is no one out there better than him.

He is still our best bowler in death overs and is decent with the old ball. This problem can be solved if Hassan bowls with the new ball and Amir bowling most of his overs in middle and later part of the innings.

That's simply not good enough, the OP has laid bare his inconsistency or even inability to perform well regularly in ODIs and this is over a whole year. Think he should be dropped if he remains toothless throughout this Asia Cup.

Looking at tests, he's played 19 matches since his return in 2016 and he's only taken one 5fer and has an average of 33 over this period. For Pakistan, a team that has relied on its bowling to win matches since its inception, for the main strike bowler to hardly make an impact in the match isn't acceptable and needs to be addressed. In an ideal world, he's had plenty of matches and needs to be dropped for alternatives who have earned their spot in tests. Amir needs to go back to the drawing board and work on the aspects of his bowling he's currently not excelling at.

And is it already guaranteed that we will get to the semi-final or final?

Shaheen and Junaid look like excellent replacements for him.

There is no logic in the arguments now being made for Amir.

Didn't know these stats - extremely poor return considering that half of those games must be against ZIM & HK. Economy is a good stats, but his SR is 120 as the bowling spearhead.

Let's wait till India match for any conclusion.

Considering Pakistan plays India probably once or twice a year. Is it worth carrying a bowler just for that? He played 3 games against Zimbabwe, whose main players missed the series due to some dispute. He has played one game against HK and still has this poor record. Yesterday would have been a great chance for him to pick 3-4 wickets but he got a figure of 7-1-20-0. Brilliant containing spell against a team who were 99/9.

I don't wield my power against fledglings, however, come the 19th...

I think this excuse of only performing in big matches is bogus and circumstantial. How does that even work lol. When you're a good bowler, you're a good bowler regardless of who you're playing, period.

This guy needs to fix his act.

What are his numbers in ODIs since his return to international cricket? Abdullah719

I'm a huge Amir fan, but even Amir fans can't deny this. As frustrating as those dropped catches were, you can only go so far with that argument. The way I see it is that the team composition will stay the same until the end of the WC, and if Amir is more-or-less still giving those same economical spells then I'm afraid his chances of being dropped will be right up there, making way for youngsters trying to take his place :ssa.

If he can knock out the Indians on Wednesday, all will be forgiven.

He has been pretty mediocre for a while now but he hardly goes for runs in t20is or Odis, definitely not a strike bowler. He is playing as a 5th bowler it seems. I guess it's time to drop him and give shaheen a go.

It's okay.

Such stats don't matter much. He'll deliver when it's time.

He won't, I don't think he can knock out any team at the moment. He will be economical but will not pick up many wickets. If Pakistan and India (A big if for India) reach the finals and Pakistan get a big first innings score, then Amir will get few wickets. On the 19th it will be the other bowlers.

Needs a sports psychologist, seems to have a mental block with regards to his motivation in matches that aren't big games. Either that or he needs to be dropped to see if he comes back more motivated

In a recent interview. He actually talked about it and said something like. "I give my best and sometimes the ball just passes 1 or half inch of the stump or bat. It is luck." In contrast to this Hasan Ali is really lucky. Now I somewhat agree that M Amir is a bit unlucky ever since he made his come back. He had to deal with drop catches and bowling beautiful deliveries but nor getting wickets. But if it's a matter of luck then why he got wickets and won the match for us in CT17 final? If he's truly unlucky is it worth it carrying around in each game?

P.S: I personally think he is unlucky, but also haven't showed much passion and aggression against smaller sides.

Will be interesting to see how he goes against us on 19th. There will be limited swing and seam on offer but based on what he did in CT final, he will have very fond memories and be full of confidence.

I may be wrong but I don't think he bowls full enough regularly. In CT final, he did that and destroyed our top order, ditto in the last Asia Cup at Dhaka, bowled full, got us down to 8 runs for 3 wickets before a Kohli special helped us win.

He is helping the other bowlers take wickets by creating pressure.

Asia Cup match was a seaming track, if I remember.

I highly doubt Dubai will have a pitch anything like that.

He is not a wicket taker in UAE, bowl doesn’t swing and Amir is a pure swing bowler bit like Anderson. He can still bowl economically as he has good control. It will be foolish to drop him for the WC which is in England and where he had his best performances. I would keep him fresh for the WC and play him only every other match. This way it won’t be a big loss as he is not a big match winner in UAE conditions.

Should be persisted with in starting 11 till end of Asia cup if he doesnt perform the the bench strength in bowling means he should then remain in sqaud and not the starting 11.

I really like the whole theory around Amir.
The thing is the lad has given us some bragging rights:babar

No one remembers JAMODIS vs NZ, or a Asia cup but people will forever remember that great over to Dilshan in 2009 and of course well you know...:ashwin

His best performance was in the Semifinal of the Champions Trophy, where he applied pressure against the tournament favorites England from the pavilion, along the inferior bowlers on the field to restrict England to a lowly total without him.

This.

Man you unlocked the code. See the impact Amir has even without playing. The next match he took it to another level and decimated your batting line up to pieces.

I believe that we've got a strong enough bowling attack that we don't need to make a big deal about Amir's not so spectacular form. He's still a decent bowler who can hold his place in the side.

The talk of dropping him is premature as we don't have a special talent waiting in the wings. So, personally, I'm not too fussed about it. The trio of Amir-Hassan-Junaid/Shinwari, along with the spinners, is more than capable of getting the job done.

Even if he doesn't do it against India , it doesn't mean much as batters and spinners are more likely to fare better here.
I'm still expecting a turn up though.
Is defo in our starting eleven.
You need guys in the line up who the opposition respect and fear.
Amir is one of a few we have

Amir is not the second coming of Wasim. But he is one bowler who doesn't get hit for runs. And he definitely chooses when to perform. His pace was low in NZ ODIs but was quick in the T20s. If it were not him Ross Taylor would have won the match for NZ in the third T20. His economy is impressive.

29 matches
33 wickets
3/16 best figs
34.72 avg
43.3 s/r
4.8 eco

Not bad stats to be fair to him.

Could have been better and the heat is on him really to perform at the Asia Cup.

My prediction for Amir's performance regardless of result: 10-3-40-5

Totally agree. I was one of his supporters that believed he needed time returning after 5 years. However in my opionion he has now had ample opportunities but does not strike or even look that threatening. For me if you are playing for your country then all matches are important. We should bring in Shaheen Afridi or Junaid and make him earn his place in the team now and not take it for granted.
Maybe try Afridi, Shinwari, Junaid and Hasan ahead of him.

Would be epic if he was dropped for Shaheen for the India game, might wake him up. Don't see it happening though.

Not happening, bro.

After Rana correctly predicted that Fakhar would score a double, I kinda got inspired :P albeit against Zimbabwe, but still. Anyhow, if I do predict this correctly, or at least predict the 5fer part correctly, then you'll know where to find my comment :babar.

Amir is supposed to be the leader of the bowling attack.

However he is the worst performing bowler out of all of them.

He is economical which is great for t20s. But in ODIs you have to take wickets with the new ball.

Amir has been below average in both ODIs and tests.

It's time to drop him. One performance per year isn't enough. Selectors are playing favoritism. This Asia cup should be his last chance.

Has an excellent record in ICC tournaments and is simply a big match player. Amir is needed for Pakistan to go far in England next year. The likes of Shinwari + Raees will choke in my opinion.

In an ICC knockout game Amir would be the first bowler in my XI without any hesitation. No doubt that not performing against lowly minnows like Hong Kong is concerning but at the same time it is frustrating to see fans don't appreciate his value to the side in clutch games. His records in ICC LOI tournaments peak for itself as shown in the T20I WCs like in 09 and CT 09 and the one last year. His performances in the 09 and last year's final were just phenomenal .

Amir needs to be backed by captain and management to harness his aggression which is what has been missing in these lower key matches.

Needs something big against India or else Shaheen should come in for the rest of the tournament

Can Mohammad Amir pick up more wickets if he bowls around the wicket?

What do I guys think, would mohammad Amir have a better average if he went around the wicket more often? Would it make him a greater potent threat to righties?

Cant blame him today. Indian openers are WC and today there was 0 pressure on them.

Lets hope we bat better as the tourney goes on.

Update:

Matches: 9
Overs: 65
Wickets: 3
Average: 87
Economy: 4.02

I see posts like these and laugh out loud. I only see pak fans make these excuses for some reasons. Ishant sharma is a CT winner with amazing bowling in the final. Irfan Pathan is a world cup winner with amazing final bowling. But i have never heard indian fans call them big game players

And the most hillarious part is that most of this Amir big game hype is based on one single CT final where his team scored 340 plus. This score jad never been chased in big games and even zim or hong Kong bowlers can defend that score in a big game final. To credit amir with that match is some of the most desperate stuff by his fan boys

It's not that we don't have any replacements, the one who is warming the bench is as quick plus 7 inches taller than him. I think it's better for him to get dropped and play a full domestic season in order to regain his lost in swing

Why is he getting a free ride? He could always say my schedule was tight. But when it comes to premier leagues, they wouldn't hesitate to play no matter how much their work load, as the money is good. Clearly, they have gotten their priorties straight. Also, the technique of amir has been really poor of bowling away from stumps, as he intentionally bowls there to not get any swing i think.

He needs to dropped. His bowling is so lackluster that its not even funny. If he's not getting the swing, at least hit a good length on a consistent basis. I don't think we'll lose any sting from our bowling attack if hes replaced with Shaheen.
