Mominul Haque appreciation thread

I think he is not a good captain but he is one of the best Test batsmsn in BD history. I rate him higher than Tamim and Shakib currently (Test only).

Just rewatching the highlights of the 1st Test between BD and WI.

Wow this guy did not review two stone dead LBWs in WI's 2nd innings. They were absolutely plumb.

Where was the game awareness from the skipper and bowler ? [MENTION=130260]Executioner[/MENTION] [MENTION=136446]Mainul[/MENTION]

That really did cost us that game. To me ,Mominul is not a captaincy material. He is by his presence and personally not vibrant in the field, not proactive. But to review as bowling side the bowler should be the first person to present the case to the captain. I won't blame Mominul much in this regard. BD had review left still they didn't use at that time. Just 1 wicket in the morning to break the partnership all that we required. All went wrong that day . We are not that good to win test matches. A lot of flaws in the the team. Still that loss was unbelievable, unacceptable.

Bangladesh Cricket Board cricket operations committee chairman Jalal Younus believes captaincy role is piling extra pressure on Mominul Haque as the left-handed batter currently deals with off-form with the willow.

Bangladesh Test captain Mominul has recently come under heavy criticism for his below par performance with the bat alongside the team failures.

In the just concluded Test series at home against visitors Sri Lanka, Mominul scored just 11 runs in three innings [two in Chittagong Test and nine and nought in Dhaka Test].

Prior to this series, the left-hander scored just one fifty-plus innings in his last 12 innings, and totaled just 165 runs with a below par average of 15.

Mominul since being given the charge as skipper has led Bangladesh in 17 Tests and won three including the historical victory against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui earlier this year.

“I think yes, captaincy does add pressure. It might even be that he is not being able to ask proper help [with his batting] being the captain. Situations as such hampers the confidence. Its puts you under immense pressure and affects the game,” said Jalal to the media Monday.

Mominul had started the Sri Lanka series with best career average among Bangladesh batters with a figure of 39.48.

However, following a poor series his average dipped to 38.31, now behind Tamim Iqbal with 39.53.

Following the 1-0 series loss against Sri Lanka last week, BCB president Nazmul Hasan had emphasized the need for him and the cricket operations to have a meeting with Mominul to address the issues.

BCB director Jalal informed that the discussion is ongoing.

“President [Nazmul] had clearly said – he will speak to Momimul alongside us [cricket operations]. He had a small sitting; the discussion is still pending. He will for sure speak to Mominul after he returns to Dhaka [from India after attending the IPL 2022 final],” said Jalal.

Bangladesh are set to face a daunting task in Tests as they are scheduled to play two matches against the West Indies next month.

The two Tests are part of the World Test Championship.

In more than the month-long tour, Bangladesh will also play three T20Is and as many ODIs against the Caribbean side.

The ODIs however, are not part of the World Cup Super League.

Bangladesh Test team are scheduled to leave for the islands next Monday.

Mominul was good for a while but has become a liability now. He is also a terrible captain.

Should be dropped.

Bangladesh Test captain Mominul Haque said he was stepping down from his position Tuesday to focus on his batting, after a poor run of form so far this year. The 30-year-old announced his decision during a meeting with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chiefs at the home of board president Nazmul Hassan. His batting has come under heavy criticism after the country's Test series loss to Sri Lanka earlier this month. There have been calls for his resignation ahead of next month's tour of the West Indies.

"I just told them I am unable to contribute to the side as a captain and failed to motivate the team. So I feel it is better if someone else is given the responsibility," Mominul told reporters after the meeting.

"I feel that if I can concentrate on my batting it will be good for me as well as for the team."

Mominul has scored just one half-century and accumulated 162 runs in six Test matches in 2022.

His form deserted him after an innings of 88 in Bangladesh's shock eight-wicket win over New Zealand at Mount Maunganui in January.

He scored just 11 runs in three innings in the recent series against Sri Lanka, which Bangladesh lost 0-1.

He said BCB president Nazmul requested that he carry on during the meeting, but that he expressed his reluctance.

Mominul's mentor and coach, Nazmul Abedin Fahim, told AFP that the captaincy had "affected his batting to a certain extent".

"So, I think he should get rid of this load to return to form as a batsman," he added.

Mominul has scored 3,525 runs in 53 Tests, with 11 centuries -- the highest by any Bangladeshi batsman.

The BCB appointed Mominul as Test captain for the West Indies tour, but there is speculation locally that Shakib Al Hasan will be reappointed Test captain.

Mominul took over from Shakib in November 2019 after the latter was banned by the International Cricket Council for his failure to report corrupt approaches.

A board official had earlier in the morning said they were open to changing captain for the series if Mominul wished.

"Mominul was given the captaincy at a crisis moment. We have to give him some respect. If he decides to quit, we will look for a replacement," cricket operations chief Jalal Yunus told AFP.

The team will leave for West Indies on June 5.

Bangladesh will also play three Twenty20 internationals and three one-day internationals during the tour.

Mominul Haque doesn’t want to remain as the captain of Bangladesh Test team. The left-handed batter revealed his decision to the media following a meeting with Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan at the latter’s residence on Tuesday evening.

BCB is yet to make a statement on the decision.

“I told them [BCB president Nazmul in the meeting] that I have not been able to contribute for the team as the captain for past few series. I am not being able to inspire my team. I think it is better to have someone else take the charge. I have told them and now the decision depends on them,” said Mominul to the media.

Bangladesh Test captain Mominul has recently been under heavy criticism for his below par performance with the bat along-side the team failures. In the just concluded Test series at home against visitors Sri Lanka, Mominul scored just 11 runs in three innings in the series [two in Chittagong Test and nine and nought in Dhaka Test] in the series. Bangladesh lost the series 1-0 at home.

Prior to this series, the left-hander scored just one fifty-plus innings in his last 12 innings, and totaled just 165 runs with a below par average of 15. Mominul since given the charge as the captain has led Bangladesh in 17 Tests and won three including the historical victory against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui earlier this year.

“I am trying to focus more on my batting at the moment. I think that will be better for me. There is a board meeting ahead [on June 2]. They will take a decision there [I think],” Mominul informed.

Ace all-rounder Shakib al Hasan has been one name being discussed highly to take charge from Mominul. BCB president Nazmul however defers from the opinion and emphasized that Shakib first needs to decide on his availability for the national team duty.

“I heard about it yesterday [Monday that Shakib is being tipped as the next Test captain]. Shakib was always in all the formats for Bangladesh. But before reaching a decision [of making Shakib the Test captain], I at least need to know whether Shakib will play or not. If he becomes captain then he cannot pick and choose [between series and tours]. First, we need to know what Shakib's plan is,” said the BCB boss.

Bangladesh cricketer Mominul Haque's declaration to quit Test captaincy may not have shocked the cricketing fraternity, given his persisting off-form with the bat. However, those who have been following what Mominul had said of late, would know that the decision does guarantee a few raised eyebrows.

Last month, following the Tigers' tour of South Africa, Mominul spoke to The Daily Star during an exclusive interview, during which he was asked whether the captaincy was being a burden to his batter self. Mominul had failed to reach double figures in the four innings he played against the Proteas.

"I enjoy it [captaincy] a lot. I enjoy what goes on in the field and it doesn't affect my batting. In fact, it helps me understand the game," Mominul had said, on April 14, as he went on to reiterate his views.

"If I start thinking it's a big pressure since I'm not scoring runs and the team aren't getting results, I won't go far. I've learned to absorb these things," he continued.

"If I can work on my game, I'll be able to make a comeback. The important thing about captaincy is that it opens up your thinking brain and your game opens up too."

Following the South Africa tour, Bangladesh played two Tests against Sri Lanka at home and had drawn the opener in Chattogram before losing the decider in Dhaka, in quite a convincing fashion. If the team performance of the two latest series, especially the batting, is compared, then the latest outings at home fared better for the Tigers, although the Mominul-led top-order collapse, alongside his single-digit scores, remained one of the common denominators.

Now, after 47 days since the interview, yesterday, the cricketer briefed the media, saying, "When you are playing well, you can still motivate the team even if it doesn't bring a result. I feel that I am not being able to play well and the team is not getting results.

"It's a hard situation to captain the side in. I feel it's better not to do it [captaincy] right now. I feel that if I can focus on my batting, it would be better."

So, what had significantly changed since then that Mominul decided on quitting captaincy?

Since his statements of then and now, in a short span of time, certainly contradict, thus, the question automatically surfaces to any ardent Bangladesh cricket follower: Is the player from Cox's Bazar being forced to resign, as a scapegoat for the batting debacle?

However, the Bangladesh Cricket Board president, Nazmul Hassan Papon, had openly stated that he does 'not have a problem with his [Mominul] captaincy'. Rather, his batting form had him worried. The president had said that he intended to engage in an open discussion to understand the state of mind of Mominul, who led the Tigers in 17 Tests so far, including the historic win in New Zealand earlier this year.

Furthermore, Mominul had told The Daily Star last month, in the same interview:

"In Test cricket, you are saying that we are learning after 20 years but I think that back then we used to learn but now we have learned to understand the process. It will take time."

In recent times, the word 'process' apparently gets thrown around right and left in Bangladesh cricket and Mominul's latest announcement has arguably reduced the gravity of the word, if it wasn't already. Now, a curious mind may wonder if the decision to resign before an important series like the tour of West Indies– also a vital part of the 'process'? Or did Mominul somehow had a vague idea of what the 'process' was all along?

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan revealed that the board had removed Mominul Haque from Test captaincy.

The BCB chief’s statement contradicts the saga of Mominul willingly stepping down from the role.

Left-handed top-order batter Mominul on May 31 declared his resignation as Test captain following a meeting with Nazmul at his Gulshan residence.

The diminutive batsman had come to the decision amid heavy criticism of his below par performance with the bat and failing to lead the Test team to better results.

BCB later announced Shakib al Hasan as the new Test captain and the star all-rounder started the duty with the ongoing tour of the West Indies where Bangladesh conceded a 2-0 series whitewash against the hosts.

Nazmul Wednesday however, during an interaction with the media following the fourth meeting of the BCB Board of Directors claimed that the board had removed Mominul after giving enough time.

Mominul’s struggle with the bat continued as he scored just four runs, including a duck, in the first Test of the series.

In the second Test, he was benched and it has been reported that the management thought of giving the left-handed batter a break.

“I don’t think it would have been wise to remove Mominul without giving him enough time. I think we gave him sufficient time [as captain] and then removed him as the skipper. Now we saw he did not play the second Test. This decision was taken by the team management, we are not aware of what happened. It could have been another player too. You have to understand that new players are being tested by the team management,” said Nazmul to the media.

The BCB boss said the board in the meeting emphasized on developing first-class cricket.

The discussion in the board happened amid wide debate of Bangladesh trailing behind in Test cricket and that it is yet to develop a strong culture despite playing the format for almost 22 years.

The BCB supremo pressed that having quality first-class cricket set-up will also help off-form national team cricketers to find a way back to rhythm and as an example, Nazmul spoke of Mominul.

“We discussed on how we can develop domestic competitions, especially longer version cricket. The working committee will develop three proposals and submit to the board and we will have further discussion,” Nazmul informed.

“I think those national cricketers who struggle with form can play the domestic tournament to make a return. It will help especially those cricketers who I personally consider as good but are not being able to perform, for example Mominul. I am confident he will come back. He has scored so many centuries but has not been able to score runs in last 10 games. I am sure he will make a comeback if he gets to play some domestic cricket. It’s just a matter of time.”

Not sure about BD team but am very sure that results under Nazmul Hassan will continue going south. In no small part because of his bumbling style of management.

He is due for a well deserved exit.

A fine century for Mominul Haque, only the second hundred by a visiting batter in ten Tests in Kanpur since 1984, the other being Andrew Hall's 163 in 2004.
