Here I am in order of merit compiling a list of performances in test series in a losing cause in order of merit.Assesing the most honourable test series defeats ever by a team. Taken into account strength of opposition and intensity of contest.
1.1960-61 West Indies in Australia
AUSTRALIA LOST 1-2
Literally took the spirit of the game to heights of divinty or to supreme zenith. With a litle more luck might well have won 2-1 coming within a doostep of victory in sets at Brisbane and Adelaide.Frank worrell took the game of cricket to heights of glory never attained.
2.Pakistan in West Indies in 1977
PAKISTAN LOST 1-2
Morally should have drawn the series 2-2 but for some biased umpiring decisions by umpire Doug Sang Hue in the 1st tset at Barbados. With great courage Pakistan challenged a al conquering Carribean team led by Clive Lloyd.Came withing a doorstep of wining the 1st test, ressurected themselves from the grave or depths of despair to save the 3rd tset at Georgetwon and pulled of a memorable win at Trinidad.
3.Pakistan in Australia in 1972-73
PAKISTAN LOST 0-3
Although beaten 3-0 Pakistan came within touching distance of wining the 2nd and 3rd tests. In the 1st test Pakistan were wiped out by a margin of an innings. In the 2nd test after Australia put up a big total of 441-5 Pakistan spectacularly replied putting up a staggering total of 574-7.Sadly it collapsed in the 2nd innings chasing a atotal of 291 to lose by 91 runs.In the 3rd test Pakistan had Australia on the ropes in the 2nd innings who were a mere 75 runs ahead with 2 wickets in hand. However the Aussie tail waged with the last 2 wickets piling on 84 runs.Chasing a paltry target of 159 Pakistan were skittled for a score of 106 to lose by 52 runs.
4.Australia in Pakistan in 1994
AUSTRALIA LOST 0-1
With a Little more luck Australia could well have won 3-0.In the 1st test a sensational 58 run partnership for the lats wicket by Inzamam and Mushtaq robbed Australia of af amous win.In the 2nd test Pakistan were literally saved from the depths of despair after following on by a classic 237 by Salim Malik.History virtually repeated itself in the 3rd test with Pakistan again being rescued from dire straits.
5.Australia v West Indies in Australia in 1992-93
AUSTRALIA LOST 1-2
Australia came within a doorstep of clinching and regaining the Frank Worell trophy at Adelaide before Mcdermott was adjudged caught behind with Australia just 2 runs adrift from the victory target. For a good part of the serine Australia played the better cricket almost winning in the 1st test at Brisbane and convincingly triumphing at Melbourne in the 2nd test.
6.England in West Indies in 1990
ENGLAND LOST1-2
A hard fought series with England holding the edge till the West Indies resurgence at Barbados.
7.India in West Indies in 1975-76
INDIA LOST1-2
India may well have won by a 2-1 margin but for a repeat of bodyline bowling or a bumper barrage at Kingston.Rain and bad umpiring cost India a win in the 2nd test at Trinidad while in the 3rd test on the same venue India pulled of the then record 4th innings total to win a test. Before the launching of the bumper war India were on par at Kingston and at one stage had the Calypsos.on the backfoot at 179-6.
8.Pakistan in England in 1971
PAKISTAN LOST 0-1
A series that most unfairly eluded Pakistan who were the morale winners in Birmingham and from a winning position subsided at Leeds to lose by a mere 25 runs.
9.Pakistan in England in 1982
PAKISTAN LOST 1-2
Bad umpiring cost Pakistan a series win at Leeds after Pakistan came back spectacularly to level the series at Lords with a historic 10 wicket win.Pakistan would almost certainly have won at Leeds if Sarafraz Nawaz was fit and played.

INDIA LOST 2-3
After being thrown in the depths of despair losing the 1st 2 sets India made came back spectacularly like a phoenix form the Ashes at Kolkata and Madras to level the series. In the final test at Mumbai India eventually caved in in hard fought game.
11.India in Australia in 2007-08
INDIA LOST1-2
Had it not been for a series of absurd umpiring decision sin the 2nd test at Hobart India would have won the series 2-1.The better team morally in the 2nd and 3rd tests.Spirit of Indian cricket elevated to its peak point.
12.South Africa in England in 1998
SOUTH AFRICA LOST 1-2
Bad umpiring in the final test at Leeds cost the Proteas a famous series victory.South Africa came within a doortsep of winning the 2nd test and a negation of an appeal for a catch of Atherton in the 4th test cost them a win.
