Murali Vijay: An international failure?

hope this is not one off though because now hes going to SA.
 
Seems to be back to his Pre IPL days...when he was supposed to be future with test match cricket for india with his technique and style...

Good to see !!!

hopefully he continuous to do well...
 
What's more heartening to see is his avoidance of rash strokes and casual approach to the game. If he can improve on these two aspects of his game, then he will have long career as an Indian test batsmen.

I feel the fame that he gained through that whirlwind innings(scoring 120 odd off some 60 balls) against RR in one of the games at Chennai resulting in his falling. People(media in particular) started hyping and expecting more such innings from him since then. This in a way affected his normal batting approach and bad habits crept in subsequently lost his form n place in the Test team. I hope he identifies, accepts and corrects the areas in his game that he needs to improve on.

What is that supposed to mean? CSK selection = India selection?

To put that in perspective:

Vijay has justified his selection with back to back 150s.
Dhoni is an auto selection as a player in Indian conditions.
Ashwin is an auto selection as a player in Indian conditions.
Jadeja is justifying his selection in no uncertain terms.

All CSK players in the India team are there on merit and not due to CSK bias.

I think he meant "playing for CSK(or in IPL) will make Vijay to go back to his old self" (ala reckless shot maker). B'cos that's what I understood from his post and replied accordingly :)

@LethalWeapon - Am I rite? or wrong in understanding your post?
 
i think he was really slow. Screwed up the whole momentum and the run rate.
Should have got 60-65 runs on the 3rd day itself

Oh ok. Vijay will be ok in India.

Vijay will struggle in SA. If he can score only so fast in India even while making a huge score, runs will be even more harder to come by in SA. You need to score faster in SA, can't see Vijay getting fifties in SA with these kind of strike rates.

YES, you are right.

That hoick on the leg side, just makes go red! He has a good technique, and should outdo Sehwag or atleast equal that 25 something avg. but will he do that?
 
Always believed in Vijay. Great to see him showing some maturity in his batting. Two back to back big hundreds and the most striking feature has been that he's been comfortable in playing supporting role in both innings. Also has shown the pedigree of hitting big hundreds which is what you want from test players. Great signs for India, wishing him good luck for imp future tours as well. :)
 
A poor man's Matthew Hayden wannabe. When in flow, he can be quite a player.

He has a decent technique. But he tries to go for stylish drives and loses out. In south Africa, he battled Steyn and Morkel at Durban of all places for about an hour but then hit a moronic stroke to get out.
 
Vijay was a good test prospect two or three years ago. But ever since his IPL dream run in 2010, he started getting too flashy. It appears that he has gone back to basics and he played more sensibly here. Vijay would be a serious test prospect for India if he does not let the IPL mentality come his way.
 
Didn't really hold an opinion before today, was not familiar with him.

All I know is that I highly rate his current innings. Sterling work.
 
Funny how times change. A few days ago, those who were asking for Vijay's head and now demanding Dhawan's.
 
Expected him to be a walking wicket but oh boy, hasn't he proved us all wrong. Great effort!

Kohli and Vijay have silenced critics. One more successful overseas tour will confirm the reemergence of Indian batting after a brief dark period.
 
His patience and concentration has been really impressive. Tbh, I didn't think he had it in him.

Vijay is decent. Can play some good knocks every now and then. But those good knocks are followed by a long sequence of under 30 scores.
I believe he is a typ eof player who averages around 35-40 at international level. Not the ideal opener, but more like a temporary solution until a real opener is found.

But in recent times, he has managed to score some big runs.

I don't know why people keep saying this. He has had a great 2013 with the bat in tests. He has done well in SA too while everyone was almost certain he will be a sitting duck against, Steyn, Morken and Philander. Now that he has succeeded people are saying that he is okay by cannot be long term prospect. He has done well and needs a long run with the team.
 
Also knocking at the doors in ODIs. Should be in those teams as well pretty soon.
 
And where exactly is this "real opener" going to come from. Look around domestic cricket and let me know who this great one is. K L rahul, Unmukt, vijay Zol, khadiwale are all too raw. Jiwanjot has slipped off after a season. gambhir and Sehwag cannot seem to buy runs in domestic.

Vijay has done pretty well with his chances. Sure he could build more on some of his starts but not as bad as some people seem to suggest.
 
Happy for Vijay. Performed his role of a defensive opener to a T today. Today's innings should do a world of good to his confidence. A decent fielder to boot as well. A decent outing in the next tour to NZ should stand him in good stead for England later next year

Now Dhawan needs to find his groove soon. Dont agree with knee jerk posters who say that he should be dropped now. These two are a terrific combo for India and need all the opportunities they get to become a solid opening pair for us. Not much back up in the domestic circuit atm either. Gambhir still hasnt got any daddy hundreds to knock down the selector's door again.
 
I was not a believer before this tour,but boy is he changing my opinion!
I liked his approach in all 3 innings,good solid defense and showing immense judgement and maturity.
Hope he can continue this good work.

If he averages 40 as an opener it would be cool. Sehwag and Gavaskar are the only Indian openers to average 40+ over a lengthy period.

Now, looking at Vijay he seems to be very comfortable playing at home - he seems to be that sort of player who can average 50 at home. Even if you give him only 35 away, he would average around 43-44 overall - if he does that he would be a big asset to the team for a long time to come.
 
He was terrible in last SA tour. Much better performance this time around.

He will be a bully in Indian conditions and if he averages between 35-40 in overseas conditions (Aus-SA-Eng-WI-NZ) then that will be good enough for me. Even Sehwag-Gauti didnt average 40+ in those places, so not sure what you mean by a real opener.

While all the talks have been about Kohli, Pujara, Rahane, Rohit and even Dhawan there is one guy who has quietly notched up 360 runs at an average of 72 in this series. Murali Vijay has not only been India's highest scorer this series,he has also been one of India's top performers overseas over the last few months.

Vijay has more runs than Pujara and is just behind Rahane and Virat. The guy has been often ridiculed and was deemed unfit to play on overseas pitches but has proved otherwise with his solid batting at the top of the order. Not only has Vijay scored lots of runs this series, the most important statistic is the amount of deliveries he has faced opening the batting for India. He has faced 916 deliveries in this series alone and has negated the new ball in most of the innings he has batted till now.

Has India finally found one reliable opener?

Khurram Manzoor should look up to him as inspiration. Similar batsmen.
 
He is one player who has adapted to overseas tours rather well. Started off poorly, but he made progress with every single match he played. This guy just keeps getting better.
 
has definitely exceed expectations.....but i am still skeptical about him...maybe he is good enough ...will find out in few more matches
 
I was one of the biggest critics of Vijay. But man, he has made me eat some crow.

Vijay is the only Indian batsman in this series that does not make me nervous when batting. The next one is Bhuvi. He looks solid like a rock too.
 
I don't think I have ever been proven wrong like this before. I was sure that he wouldn't last more than 25-30 balls overseas and I am happy to eat the humble pie.
 
Vijay has 560 runs (14 innings) in the 3 overseas tours at an average of 43 with 1 hundred and 3 fifties. He is just behind Rahane who has scored 589 runs in 12 innings and just ahead of Kohli who has 559 runs in 13 innings. He has done quite well so far. He will have his next test in Australia but I back him to do well. India needs to keep him away from shorter formats and IPL if possible. The guy has rediscovered his solid technique and temperament. we don't want to spoil that with mickey mouse cricket.

Was reading an interview about him the other day where he was talking about how he improved his game, that he was tired of scoring pretty 30s and 40s and wanted to bat deeper in an innings. He went back to his coach in the Indian domestic system who identified the cause of his failure down to 2 things: 1) Poor shot selection and 2) Poor fitness, that after he made a 30 or 40 he would get exhausted and throw it away. Seems like has been working on both and the results are showing.

Read that and looks like a guy who works hard on his game.
 
He plans against the conditions quite well, gives them total respect and sticks to his plan no matter what. A very hard working and honest Cricketer.
 
He has tightened his defense for sure but is lacking in ability like Rayudu.
 
He is capable of scoring brisk runs, play lofty shots very well. Too circumspect, should make the most of his stay on crease. In England, it was okay to take the shine of new ball. In Australia he can play his shots.
 
He should not be that nervous in 90s, that made India miss a rare opportunity.
 
Vijay was always pleasing to watch with his flowing drives. But, now he has added immense discipline to that.

Plans ahead and sticks to it, whether it was leaving balls outside off in Eng or ducking/leaving/defending bouncers here in Australia.
Playing only one format also helps I guess.

First innings Johnson hit him, then he batted like he had just walked out to the crease and his technique fell apart. Second innings got to 99 then looked all at sea. Something to work on.
 
I like the looks of him.

Vijay, Pujarra, Kohli and Rahane will form the nucleus of a very good test batting lineup

spotted that too. Also his feet got stuck in the crease for an over or so in this innings after Johnson bowled a few bouncers.

Still needs to convert scores into big tons

Worried about Pujara a bit though.
seems a bit off ever since the NZ tour.

His spin-playing ability also seems to have regressed from the time he was our best bat against Swann/Pujara.
 
Very good that Vijay has turned up, in a worst-case scenario we would have otherwise been stuck with two flailing openers after Sehwag and Gambhir faded.

He gets nervous in the 90s though, something to look at.
