Muslims fear backlash of India’s coronavirus fury

Initial investigation by the Delhi Police Crime Branch has found that an audio clip mentioned in the police FIR against Markaz Nizamuddin head Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, which suggested he had asked Tablighi Jamaat members not to follow social distancing norms and prohibitory orders, may be “doctored” and stitched together using several audio files.

If by choice means putting a signboard saying that Muslims traders can't come or by choice you mean buyers should be encouraged or discouraged to buy based on religion of trader then that's an extremely worrying situation.

By choice i mean an individual's choice of buying or selling something to another person According to his own will. He cannot be forced to buy or not bjy from anyone.

They should had rather said who is working on it or that it was made per Jain ways.

Halal is discriminatory yes but Jains need to tell why Hindus, Christians, Sikhs or Buddhists are allowed to work in the bakery and not only Muslims then this would make sense, you cannot single out.

Yes they can very well single out who they hire or dont hire according to religion.

Has anyone asked muslims to explain halal? Its their right.

This isn't a one off. Shops and thelas in Jharkhand and Hyderabad were forced to remove saffron flags and pics of hindu gods after muslims complained.

Article 25 to 28 state that a person can display any sign or symbol of religion on his self or personal property.

Once certain people took up the cause of these thela walas and shopkeepers, police had to back off as they didn't have a reasonable ground to stop anyone from displaying a religious symbol.

This arrest will further open gates of litigation.

Seems like Tarek Fatah getting lot of attention and love with Indians these days.

I have my opinion on him since well before he even became popular, but I’m curious of what do the Indians here think of him? cricketjoshila JaDed etc

How was the law carried out,? Unless you think halal food makers should be arrested too.

Halal is where Muslims are allowed to cut the meat.. the discrimination is against every other religion and its a requirement as per their religion.

Here in this situation there is no requirement like that from Jainism where it has single out Muslims.. the idea is to make food as per Jain traditions..

While halal is discriminatory Jains should explain why they are singling our Muslims when its well known Christians, Sikhs eat meat too.. can you tell me how they can single out Muslims alone here on what basis? Which part of Jainism?

Biased person, I could understand his love during Congress rule, I don’t now but its ok entertainment for both sides, his views don’t matter to me as such..I would rather give more imp to Dalai Lama than Tarak but again am sure my parents would like Tarak.

Is there a law enshrined in the constitution that explains that Muslims are allowed to do this discrimination and under which others are allowed to apply to start this discrimination?

And halal is not restricted to meat, its being certified on almost all kind of packed products like even Atta. This requires that company to compulsorily employ Muslims in the making process to get halal certificate.

And all this isnt done under any govt law or agency, this is self declared by muslim organisations without providing explaination under any law.

This is unfair on other religions and they are within rights to do something similar and they need not provide any explanation.

If govt stops others, it will only vitiate the communal atmosphere.

Of course Delhi Police would say that.

Indian Express also responded and stood by their article.

Anyway, let's see how things develop.

In the meantime, I'm wondering what "real intentions" and "Jihad" BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje was referring to.

When Delhi police called them out for the fake news, they said they tried to contact the DCP to confirm but he didnot respond.

Thats typical fake news.

Missed this from a couple of days ago.

Virus misinformation fuels hatred against India's Muslims

Gayur Hassan's Hindu neighbours came at night, throwing stones at his family's home in a northern Indian village and setting his workshop on fire. All because his son "liked" a social media post.

The Facebook post that Hassan's 19-year-old son endorsed had denounced the targeting of India's Muslim minority since the nation of 1.3 billion went into a coronavirus lockdown in late March.

According to the police who arrested two men, his family was threatened with further retribution unless they shaved off their beards and stopped wearing skull caps.

"My forefathers lived here and I was born here," Hassan, 55, told AFP by phone from Keorak, their village where a dozen Muslim families live among about 150 Hindu households.

"We lived like a family and religion was never an issue here," the welder said. But now there is "an atmosphere of fear and hate everywhere".

The attack on the Hassan family was just the latest ugly incident in the wake of a torrent of coronavirus misinformation that is stoking hostility towards India's Muslims.

Hindu nationalists are using the coronavirus to foment hatred against Muslims, using online platforms and some mainstream media to accuse them of spreading the disease.

Critics partly blame Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who they accuse of seeking to remake India as a Hindu nation, undermining the secular and pluralist roots of the world's biggest democracy.

- #CoronaJihad -

Over the past two months AFP's fact check team has debunked hundreds of social media posts that falsely targeted Muslims in regards to the coronavirus pandemic in India.

Fake and dubious videos have proliferated showing Muslims licking fruit for sale and violating lockdown rules.

In one post debunked by AFP, a photo was shared on Facebook and Twitter with a false claim that it showed Indian Muslims flouting social distancing rules by praying on a rooftop.

In fact, the photo showed people praying in Dubai.

Hundreds of thousands of online posts have also used the hashtag #CoronaJihad, some of which have been shared by members of Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The trolls were given extra ammunition when it emerged that a Muslim group, Tabligi Jamaat, ignored coronavirus guidelines with a religious gathering in March in New Delhi.

At one point the group was linked to almost one third of India's coronavirus cases, with around 40,000 people linked to the event or its attendees in quarantine.

Newspapers and television channels -- as well as the government -- have also been accused of stirring tensions, with alarmist anchors calling Tabligi Jamaat members "human bombs".

- Real-world repercussions -

As the misinformation has exploded, so too has real-world violence and anger against Muslims.

Around the country, Muslim truck drivers and nomads have been assaulted, and Muslim vendors pushed, shoved and threatened.

In one case confirmed by police, a Facebook video showed a young Muslim man bleeding and pleading as he was beaten with sticks.

One attacker is heard demanding: "Who sent you to spread the coronavirus?"

The animosity has also taken subtler forms, with "No Muslims" posters appearing in some villages.

One hospital said Muslims would not be admitted without a certificate showing they were COVID-negative.

India's 200 million Muslims have long complained of growing hostility under Modi, who came to power almost six years ago.

Modi was in charge of the western state of Gujarat when religious riots killed around 1,000 mostly Muslims in 2002.

His first term as prime minister saw a rise in "cow vigilantism" -- Hindu extremists lynching Muslims accused of eating beef or killing cows, which are sacred to many Hindus, according to activists.

His second term last year began with revoking the autonomy of India's only Muslim-majority state, and new citizenship legislation criticised as discriminatory.

In February, Delhi's worst religious riots in decades left more than 50 dead, two-thirds of them Muslims. A local BJP lawmaker was accused of being a main instigator.

- 'Unity, brotherhood' -

Activists say that in recent weeks, with media attention focused on the pandemic, police have stepped up arrests over the unrest, most of them Muslims and some under anti-terror laws.

"They are making sure there is no one to raise a voice for the community after the pandemic is over," K. Rahman Khan, a former minority affairs minister, told AFP.

Lol so again I ask you the same question, how can Jains single out one religion to not work in their bakery, in terms of Halal its employing only one and yes its discriminatory but lol its still not the same thing.. also did you go see whats halal atta, if they employ only Muslims?

You only need to Google to check about halal atta etc. And yes they need to employ muslims in the making process to get the certificate.

How can muslims ask that muslims be employed to get halaal certificate?

Only muslims can provide halal meat?

He's actually heavily supported by the Srivastava Group (biggest Indian group spreading propoganda against Pakistan). All of Fateh's websites and even his NGO (i.e. Balochistan House) are paid and hosted on servers of the same group

Well it's only Halal if Allah's name is prayed upon it. How can a non Muslim do that?

By choice i mean an individual's choice of buying or selling something to another person According to his own will. He cannot be forced to buy or not bjy from anyone.

Encouragement to link choice with religion is dangerous and that's what these posters are doing.

There is a thin line between hate speech and freedom of speech even though attempsts are made to use them interchangebly.

Google it.
Nah as a Muslim with a bit of knowledge it's utter garbahe there's no such thing as Halal anything except for meat and that too not fish so if some company is putting that sign on vegetarian products than that's stupid there's no need to even the most fundamental people will shop everywhere for atta 🤣 but they had to make sure no meat or any of it's byproducts are used as long as that's set there's no need for "halal atta" or anything

First time I'm really hearing that halal is discriminatory. Here in the west, critics of Islam tend to push the agenda of animal welfare when it comes to halal slaughtering. This propaganda of halal being discriminatory must be some something that's being peddled around India and this doesn't surprise me at all given the current hostile political climate in said country.

There could be a point to this argument if non-Muslims were not permitted to be sold halal meat but that's not the case, everyone is free to eat or purchase halal meat if they wish regardless of their faith. The Muslim butcher is a religious requirement as they need to be able to invoke the word of God and be sincere in their Islamic faith according to the Islamic laws. This couldn't be adopted or be expected with a non-Muslim.

There is also a stressing of the fact, it needs to be a Muslim to comply with the religious law, it is not stated in a negative way in which it singles out other faiths in contrast to this bakery here. The bakery has inherently singled out Muslims rather than stating that only whichever faith applies to meet whatever requirements are needed to satisfy the religious/cultural conditions, can you see the difference here?

Thus, I can only conclude that this propaganda that halal is discriminatory is pushed in India by troublemakers looking to stoke up communal disharmony to further their own narratives or agendas. As I said halal meat is not seen this way in the west, there is an entirely different propaganda pushed on that front.

They had a history with kosher which was much more extreme than halal maybe they were used to it

It is discriminatory like Kosher , its way of killing employment for many butchers, Your logic is again based on employment and non Muslims are not given that employment because it says so in the religion, for Jains doesn’t say that only non-Muslims can make Jain meals, that’s the only point of issue.

Halal is discriminatory is my own opinion nothing to do with India, my father ran a fastfood which was only serving halal because of the location ,it was business,I’ m sure many Hindus and Sikhs do that.

Imagine a new religion pops up tmrw saying we can accept water, food, services,Oil rendered only by people of their religion or certain other religions and these people become ultra rich and don’t employ others are you saying that won’t be discriminatory.

Religious definitions can lead to discrimination happens everywhere like nationalism.

Who decides what Jains need?

Who decides what Jains need?

Their religion obviously.. scriptures etc. Jain meals require to be in a certain way but doesn’t need to be prepared by non-Muslims... no where in their scriptures it says that Muslims cannot make Jain meals.

Unfortunately, if you're referring to employment and business, your argument in reality doesn't hold up. Do you think it's only the butcher that is involved in the wholesale process of halal meat production? What about production facilities, food/hygiene inspectorate, logistics/transportation, suppliers/buyers etc etc.

AFAIK, there is a requirement for Muslim butcher but no requirement for Muslim in most of the other processes. Do you know that the UK halal meat industry is worth around $5 billion and is growing fast. Globally, its worth over half a trillion dollars. Its making people a lot of money and giving them livelihoods and not only to Muslims.

I have seen non-Muslims companies transporting the meat, many major supermarkets are selling it. A lot of major chain restaurants also sell it like Pizza Express, Nandos, KFC and even Las Iguanas. Many non-Muslims benefit from the trade so its hardly discriminatory when all your argument is based upon the guy that does the actual slaughtering.

A lot of the farms and poultry abbatoirs from where the animals are sourced will be owned by Non-Muslims. So my point is that there is more benefit to Non-Muslims than there is any sort of discrimination which is actually propaganda being peddled by those seeking communal discord and to make baseless claims.

Additionally, it's only the slaughter itself that needs to be done by a Muslim while reciting Bismillah, etc. That takes a few seconds. After that, anyone can be involved in cleaning the animal, removing the skin, cutting up the pieces, and what not.

At the local shop where I buy chicken from, often one person slaughters it then goes and takes a back seat while another person does the rest, which is actually much more intensive. So in theory, butchers can have non-Muslims working at the shop; it's just that the specific act of the slaughter can only be done by a Muslim.

To do a task that that pays if the employer discriminates based on religion it’s discrimination. The only reason its allowed to do so in this case is because for Muslims its a written law and the reasons why Jains can’t do it for their meals is because they don’t have it in their scriptures.

Unless the butchers are going to do it free of cost, in which case it might be charitable but if its employment involving pay it’s discrimination, I can understand why you don’t see it but I gave you an example of if a new religion pops up and has something in their scripture prohibiting others from being employed in farming and packaging their food or textile clothes you will see it too.

That’s one example of it but most places in India the butchers are Muslims and many times owners are the butchers of the butcher shop.

unless it’s a big farming chain employing many like the Canadian Zabiha halal- Maple lodge farms where that happens but not in South Asia.

That’s the reason in west it’s not an issue as such coz it’s mostly for blessing.

Are you a Jain? Or are you the authority on Jain scriptures? Or are you the Jain Acharya?

Jains will decide what and how they employ people, its their discretion. No one else has the right to interfere.

No but its the only religion I never say anything negative about because its followers are the only ones not involved in riots or violence.

And yes i have read a lot on it but again I see you are not answering the question so lets leave it at that.

Thanks for confirming what I thought about the procurement process for halal meat. Based on these facts, I'm not sure how one can conclude that halal is discriminatory, its not something the critics of halal usually advance their arguments on.

Because you are a non-Muslim, I can also kind of see where you might be coming from. But, see your exact words below:

They should had rather said who is working on it or that it was made per Jain ways.

Halal is discriminatory yes but Jains need to tell why Hindus, Christians, Sikhs or Buddhists are allowed to work in the bakery and not only Muslims then this would make sense, you cannot single out.

"Halal is discriminatory" - Now before you were saying halal is discriminatory and now you're saying the guy that is doing the cutting of the live animal is discriminatory.

Now, if we take the literal meaning of the word "discrimination" - the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.

You can see that it is the unjust treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, sex and will also include religion. In this matter, can you really say it is unjust to have the requirement of a Muslim slaughterman to carry out a ritual slaughter to cater for the same religion?

I don't think anyone will be able to convince you otherwise as seem to have made up your mind nonetheless but it's food for thought!

In India, you've stated the butcher shop owners and butchers are mainly Muslim but as we've pointed out, there is no requirement for this but for obvious reasons, the majority of these types of businesses around the world are going to be owned by Muslims. Conversely, Muslims do not own or operate non halal meat shops and butcheries.

Answering what?

If Jains decide they have XYZ requirements in preparation of their food, thats their prerogative.

Its their religious freedom.

Its for that community to decide.

They believe that Muslims shouldnot be involved in their food making process. Its their decision. Whats wrong in that.

I dont ask why muslims want halal, what are the reasons etc etc. Its their freedom.

I dont ask Sikhs and Hindus why they want jhatka only.

I dont ask Buddhists why they are veg.

Let people follow their principles. Nothing wrong.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, BOOM has published 178 fact checks on misinformation/disinformation around the pandemic.

An analysis of our stories revealed that a bulk of the COVID-19-related fact checks were on communal rumours, most of which were false allegations against Muslims, of purposefully spreading the virus. These messages appeared in April, after several members of the Tablighi Jamaat - an Islamic Missionary group, tested positive for the virus following a massive congregation in Delhi in March.

Gujarat Cops Barged in, Hit Me With Sticks: Pregnant Muslim Woman

“It was around 7 PM in the evening on 8 May. I was in my house, cutting fruits for iftar. My husband was sitting on the bed at the other corner of the room, playing with my one-year-old daughter when some policemen barged into the house, dragged him outside and thrashed him mercilessly.”

Rehana* said she pleaded with the police to let her husband at least break his Ramzaan fast with a drop of water. “But they did not relent,” she said, breaking down beside the plate of chopped fruits.

She wasn’t the only woman in Ahmedabad’s Shahpur Adda who alleged brutalities and indiscriminate torture of Muslims in the area by Gujarat police, following violence on 8 May, in which 29 people were detained. Among the others who alleged police excesses in the area were a pregnant woman, a 62-year-old man and a child with disabilities.

‘I Told Police I Was Pregnant, They Kept Hitting Me With Sticks’

Showing red finger marks on her right cheek, Sulema* said, “I went out of my house to save my father and brother who were being taken away by the police when they started slapping me.”

“I told them I was pregnant. Despite that, they started hitting me with their sticks. They hit me repeatedly in my stomach with sticks. Finally, my neighbour stopped them and took away the stick they were beating me with.”
Sulema*

Another woman, Raheema* alleged that her son, who is specially-abled, was also dragged out of the house when the police had barged into their homes to detain her husband. “They broke opened the door and dragged my husband out. When I tried to stop them, they dragged my son too. He can barely walk without support. His sister and I stopped the police from taking him away.”

Gujarat Police Denies Allegations

Denying the allegations of police excesses, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 2, Dharmendra Sharma said, “These claims about police torturing women or ransacking houses are completely false.”

Sharma added, “Yes, when some of the miscreants tried to flee, we chased them. Some of them tried to hide in the houses, so we had to drag them out and arrest them.”

Stone Pelting, Tear Gas: How the Violence Started

With an increasing graph of cases in the city, the lockdown was strengthened last week by closing all vegetable and fruit shops and allowing only milk and medicine shops to stay open.

Shahpur in Ahmedabad, known to be a communally sensitive area, was declared a containment zone for COVID-19.

On 8 May, when some women in this Muslim-majority area went out to get milk to break their Ramzaan fast, they were stopped by the police team, which was patrolling the area. An argument ensued which turned ugly, resulting in alleged stone-pelting, tear gas shelling.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 2, Dharmendra Sharma said:

“Police was trying to enforce lockdown but some people had come out on the streets and were not maintaining social distancing. Police asked them to go but they did not relent. Then police told them that they will take legal action, booking them under Section 188 IPC (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant).”

Sharma added, “When some of these people were being taken to the police station, many other people came out on the streets and resisted their arrest. From one house, there was stone-pelting and one of our police officers got injured in that. And then the stone pelting intensified from all across the area. The police was caught in between.”

At least 29 people were detained from the area and booked under various sections of the IPC, the Epidemic Act and the Disaster Management Act. The FIR, filed by sub inspector HB Chaudhary, named 17 persons and said that three policemen, including police inspector RK Amin and four others were injured in the stone pelting by the mob.

It also mentions that 40 tear gas shells were lobbed and one rubber bullet was fired to disperse the crowd.

Videos Show Police Throwing Object at Crowd, Breaking Vehicles

Multiple videos from the spot have emerged which raises questions on the action of the police. In a short clip, a police is seen throwing an object at the crowd. While locals alleged that police resorted to stone pelting as well, Sharma denies the claim and says, “It could be stun grenade or three-way shell. It is not very clear.”

Another video shows policemen throwing objects, shelling tear gas and breaking parked bikes with their sticks. Some of them were also not in uniforms. DCP Sharma has not yet responded with a clarification on this video. The article will be updated as and when he responds.

Another video from the incident shows policemen mercilessly beating up a Muslim man in the middle of the road. The Quint has sought a comment on this incident too.

Meanwhile, civil society groups of Muslims in Gujarat have appealed to the Chief Justice of India to set up an independent enquiry into the alleged high-handedness of the Gujarat Police.

Abdullah719 I know you don’t have an agenda and you are genuinely concerned especially for Muslims in India and it’s ok everyone should be concerned for people they think are exploited. However you posting every random article out there as if the Indian government is voluntarily going after muslims and committing genocide is a little too much.

For example the post above the article about a woman from Guntur in a jail in UP, Guntur is in Andhra Pradesh which is if my estimation is correct nearly 2000 KM away so if the lady has travelled all the way for Tableeghi Markaz or whatever during lockdown disobeying center and state government orders, how does it make her sympathetic? Yes she lost a child and I feel for her but how does it become a Hindu- Muslim thing or atrocities against Muslims? Also who exactly is this Twitter Handle you posted?

How about this can I open a thread and do the same for crimes against minorities etc in Pakistan? I promise I will only post verified websites and social media posts promise. Deal! ?

You are under the impression that no one shares news about anything related to minorities in Pakistan. I posted the NY Times story about the Christian sweepers myself, and plenty of others also comment on Pakistan minority-related issues. Most of the Pakistani posters here realize there is a problem and also condemn the incidents. Regarding this case, you could have just read the article...

She and her husband Mohammad Rafi left Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh with eight other people on 14 February. Towards the end of March and early April, when several Tablighi Jamaat members had begun to test positive for COVID-19 leading to a spike in cases across India, they were in Mehmoodnagar in Lucknow. The UP police picked all ten of them, including Rizwana, on 3 April.

The Tablighi Jamaat district head from Guntur, 64-year-old Sheikh Nyamatullah, called this reporter from Andhra Pradesh and said, "They have never been to jails. They will die. What do I do? I am trying to talk to the collector. From other states we have had no such problem. For example, members of our Jamaat returned from Gujarat, Warangal, Nagpur, Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad. Only from Uttar Pradesh they have acted so ruthlessly with our people. Only in UP have they slapped cases on them and not let them leave even after spending 40 days in quarantine," he asks.

Sivareddy Kolli, former mandal president YSR Congress Party, said these ten persons are being treated like terrorists, "These people belong to my mandal. When the Andhra Pradesh government has already issued a no objection certificate over a week ago, why would the UP government not issue the pass to the people of Andhra Pradesh?"

About myself. Yes, I am concerned about Muslims in India because I was born there and the whole of the paternal side of my family resides in India. They are equally concerned about how things are progressing in recent times. They still do think things can improve in the country, but from the outside, I can't really say much that is positive.

I'll give you a little anecdote. I was in Egypt several years back and I had been outside Pakistan for a long period of time. My (Indian) father (NRI) at the time wanted me to return to India just to at least regain the nationality (which I had earlier given up) and to perhaps think of a future in the country. He thought quite lowly of Pakistan and especially didn't like the fact that being a Pakistani came with a lot of negatives, such as the difficulty in getting visas, etc. I declined the offer.

Over time, especially over the past five years or so, he gradually began to express negative views about India due to the political situation. It has reached the stage where he has now given up hope for a better future. When I last spoke to him a few days ago, he looked back and said that he was glad that I never returned to India, because he just feels it's becoming less and less safe for Muslims nowadays. Can't say I disagree.

Because it says in their religion, what does it say for jainism?

That’s a dangerous precedence I must say. I understand when it comes to meat, the exception can be understandable, however what excuses is it when it comes to other non meat halal items? To be frank I don’t get it how can a sack of four be halal? I have seen so many nonsense here as well. For instance, now there is Halal Cheese. Like what in a god name is HALAL CHEESE.
My question is, where do govt draw a line and say enough is enough. If you think one section of religious can get away with discrimination then you shouldn’t question other religious discrimination as well. It only makes you hypocrite.

Personally, I feel religious belief shouldn’t force upon democratic society as many may not see it favourably.

Indian media accused of Islamophobia for its coronavirus coverage

New Delhi, India - "During this lockdown, why does every crowd gather only near mosques?" journalist Arnab Goswami recently asked on the Indian news channel, Republic TV.

The well-known anchor was referring to a crowd that had gathered last month near a railway station that happens to be near a mosque in Mumbai, the capital of the western state of Maharashtra.

Local media reports said they were migrant workers desperate to get back to their towns and villages after a nationwide lockdown was imposed to try and combat the spread of the coronavirus.

The lockdown had left many of them jobless. They assembled there after hearing rumours that the government had finally arranged transport for their return home.

Just days earlier, similarly anxious workers rioted in neighbouring Gujarat state, but the media did not link it to any particular religion, as was the case in Mumbai.

As news website Newslaundry's Atul Chaurasia noted on his show: "The Mumbai incident once again brought to the fore the diseased, sectarian face of channels, because in the background they had spotted a mosque."

Critics have accused a large section of Indian media of blaming Muslims for the spread of the coronavirus, which so far has infected more than 82,000 people in the country and caused 2,649 deaths.

Islamophobia during a pandemic
Coronavirus worries took centre stage in India by the third week of March but the preceding months had already been turbulent.

Pan-India protests erupted in December 2019 against a new citizenship law championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, that many deemed discriminatory.

Anti-Muslim mob violence shook Delhi in February after supporters of a governing party leader attacked peaceful sit-ins against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

As the world was coming to terms with the sweeping pandemic and its effects, sections of news media remained embroiled in divisive debates until March 24, the day police cleared out the last vestiges of the anti-CAA protest sites led by Muslims in New Delhi.

A nationwide lockdown was then implemented at midnight on March 24.

By late March, Muslims became the focus of media attention after it emerged that six people who died from COVID-19 in southern Telangana state had attended an event held by a Muslim religious group called Tablighi Jamaat from March 13-15 in New Delhi.

Muslims faced further vilification in the first week of April after a government spokesperson publicly linked a spike in coronavirus cases to the Jamaat event, which was also attended by preachers from other Muslim countries.

Since then, the government seemed to have singled out the Jamaat at most official briefings.

"The media chose not to ask the government why foreign participants were not tested at airports, why Delhi and the central government and police agencies gave permission for the gathering, which was denied by the Maharashtra government," activist Kavita Krishnan told Al Jazeera.

Trending Twitter hashtags, such as #CoronaJihad, soon appeared on TV screens.

"The media are distorting facts to suggest that every Muslim belongs to Tablighi Jamaat, every Muslim is responsible for the coronavirus, and coronavirus is a synonym for Muslim," said political analyst Shahid Siddiqui.

Siddiqui called the group "irresponsible, callous and foolish" for holding a mass meeting when social distancing advisories were already widely disseminated but stressed that on March 13 the government had said COVID-19 was "not a health emergency" and the lockdown was only announced days after the Jamaat event.

He said he was "shocked" at journalists pinning the blame for the outbreak on Jamaat, and by association, Muslims.

Disproportionate focus
Senior health journalist Vidya Krishnan is a rare voice in the media pointing to the government's "inordinate" focus on the Jamaat.

Krishnan explains that the reason a large percentage of coronavirus-positive cases in India was being linked to the group is because of aggressive contact tracing of Jamaat attendees by the government, whereas citizens who have crossed paths with patients unconnected to the Jamaat were not being tracked and tested with equal determination.

"What the Indian government is doing during the pandemic is just the next step in the kind of persecution of minorities that has been happening under the Modi administration," she told Al Jazeera.

"You cannot isolate the February riots in Delhi from what's happening in everyday media briefings where the Health Ministry and Home Ministry are actively painting a target on the backs of one community."

A spate of false reports on social media and news media about Muslims spitting, roaming naked or defecating in public were later debunked.

The falsehoods are so numerous that even police departments and other official agencies have been countering or correcting tweets by news organisations and their representatives.

While studying debunked COVID-19 stories in India, University of Michigan associate professor Joyojeet Pal and his co-researchers found a rise in misinformation about Muslims from about the end of March.

In the mainstream media, "the truly insidious part is the way in which Islamophobia is suggested, without explicit mention", Pal said.

"This could include the selection of participants for TV debates, which allows an anchor to claim neutrality, but have participants indulge in extreme claims that go unchallenged. Or the use of imagery - like the focus on a mosque near a train station where migrants gathered, as if to suggest that Muslims had something to do with the gathering."

On April 10, on Zee News, anchor Sudhir Chaudhary openly accused Muslims of impeding India's coronavirus war.

Among the evidence he offered was a video of a Muslim-dominated area of New Delhi - he conceded that hardly anyone was visible in his visuals of the lockdown from this otherwise always-packed locality, but still added: "These people defy the law just so that the infection will spread rapidly across the country."

Earlier this month, police from the southern state of Kerala filed a case against Chaudhary for making incendiary remarks about the Muslim minority on his show.

That same day, India Today aired a so-called "investigation", titled Madrasa Hotspots, on Islamic schools in and around New Delhi, revealing that they misled police about the number of children in their care during the lockdown and rebuking them for renouncing social distancing and online classes.

The report did not acknowledge what filmmaker-writer-activist Saba Dewan pointed out - that "madrasas are for orphans or children of the very poor" and therefore, far from having personal computers, internet connections and spacious homes, those children might starve if sent away during the lockdown.

Dewan added: "There's no data showing that madrasas are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19 and not, for instance, boarding houses run for poor but upper-caste Hindu children in Varanasi (in Uttar Pradesh state) that are also congested. The decision to put the spotlight on madrasas alone was absolutely Islamophobic."

The pushback against such journalism has been occasionally intense this month.

Rahul Kanwal, who anchored Madrasa Hotspots, was criticised on Twitter for airing the show.

"There are so many hotspots in India - we aren't naming them to link them with a particular community. Not only is such a usage Islamophobic, it also associates the incidence of COVID-19 with stigma, it criminalises victims of a disease," Kavita Krishnan told Al Jazeera.

"There's been so little testing in India, which also creates room for this dangerous stigma. Dangerous because it deters people from coming forward to seek testing and help, for fear of being tarred by the same brush of crime or shame," Krishnan added.

The media's portrayal of Muslims as potential vectors of the virus has had real consequences.

Reports have emerged of Muslims being beaten, vegetable vendors chased from Hindu communities, a pregnant woman losing her baby after a hospital turned her away because she was Muslim and another hospital segregating COVID-19 patients by religion.

'Seeped into their soul'
Goswami, Chaudhary, Kanwal, news agency ANI's Smita Prakash, India TV's Rajat Sharma and News Nation's Deepak Chaurasia, were contacted for comments by Al Jazeera. Only Chaurasia agreed to be interviewed.

Asked if his TV show questioned why no other Indian gathering has been subject to the meticulous contact tracing done with Jamaat attendees, he said: "If what you say about contact tracing is true, then it's my request to the government."

"We have raised the matter of every other such group, the media has raised these matters," Chaurasia insisted, citing criticism of a singer who defied self-isolation to attend functions in March and a BJP politician who was at one such event.

But media avoided villainising non-Muslim communities for the multiple other political, social and religious congregations.

The BJP's Lalitha Kumaramangalam disagrees with criticism of the government in this matter, but says that the pandemic coverage is biased. "Unfortunately, Tablighi Jamaat belong to a particular community and have to be called out."

She added: "I have good friends among Muslims. My father's favourite junior was called Ali Mohammed. Ali Maama [uncle] was our favourite, so it's not that I'm prejudiced against Muslims. Unfortunately, too many from that community are behaving badly, and bad news seems to sell." She later said she had heard that falsehoods were being floated about Muslim misbehaviour.

Salman Anees Soz of the main opposition Congress party said he believed the Jamaat issue was being kept on the boil to distract Indians from the government's "bungled response [to COVID-19]".

"Some years back, I would have said maybe the media just wants to be on the right side of the government. Now I think many important media outlets genuinely believe Islamophobia is the way to go," he told Al Jazeera.

Soz says while such media are acting as instruments of the government, "at some level, Islamophobia has seeped into their soul".

Nagpur: Orthopaedic surgeon arrested for calling for genocide of Muslims, later released on bail

He had tweeted several other hate messages from his Twitter account but later claimed that it was hacked.

The Nagpur Police booked Sonar for “hurting religious sentiments”, following a complaint by a person named Shahbaz Siddique, The Times of India reported. Gittikhadan Police Station Senior Inspector Sunil Gangurde said that Sonar was produced before a local court, which released him on bail.

Muslims have been the target of hate crimes ever since a meeting of a group known as the Tablighi Jamaat in New Delhi in March resulted in a huge number of coronavirus cases around the country. On April 22, Indian embassies in the Gulf had urged citizens to remain vigilant against a spate of derogatory posts on social media linking the coronavirus pandemic to the Muslim community in India. Several Indians are facing legal action in the United Arab Emirates.

Fake videos on social media platforms have claimed to show Muslim men spitting on food, licking plates and sneezing in unison to spread the virus. Even the Bharatiya Janata Party’s IT Cell and some television channels have blamed Muslims for spreading the pandemic.

In several places, this has resulted in violence. On April 7, rumours about Muslim men intentionally spitting to spread the virus reportedly led to group clashes in Jharkhand’s Gumla district. A youth was beaten to death and two others were injured in the incident.

Media Scanner, a fact-checking platform, compiled a list of at least 69 fake videos against Muslims and listed at least 28 attacks prompted by online abuse, until April 21.

Here we go again. Another intolerant guy. You are more than welcome to start any thread here but please don't derail this thread with your usual nonsense. As an Indian, even I wasn't aware of some of the news he has been sharing with us in this thread.

And please don't do this drama of sympathising with that woman who lost her child. You are more concerned about this news leaking out than that woman. Get out of your shining India mode and see the reality.

Can't say I disagree.

Firstly I am sorry to hear that your father feels that way about India these days.

However let me give you an example. Do you think that there is no bias or racism in a country like USA or for the matter of fact UK that see itself as the leader of the free world and torchbearer of secularism, diversity and liberty?

However despite the fact, people want to live in the USA because despite these things inevitable in a diverse country, the constitution protects the rights of the people for the most part and there is opportunity for a better life for your children isn't it?

The point I am making is not comparing USA to India, but for example if you hear the American media on Trump, it sounds like he is a bigot and a racist hell bent on starting a white supremacy campaign. However lets not forget that the whole Black lives matter movement, Trevor Martin shooting in Florida and the protests against police for killing African American youth,Arab Spring etc etc all happened under Obama administration. However Obama is seen as a secular president but will Trump be given the same benefit of doubt if all this happen under him?

It's the same with Modi. Look in a country like India there is diversity every 100 KM's when even the dialect of the same language changes. There are castes, religions and even ethnicities that live under the same umbrella. Do you think it is possible to not have any conflicts?

Let us see the big decisions made by Modi government.

Triple Talaq bill- Wasn't this done for the benefit of Muslim women?

Ram Mandir- Babri Masjid conflict- This has been going on and on but today is anyone complaining or feeling they got the short end of the bargain? This mess has been closed for the forseeable future.

Demonetization- Whatever it was in the end, was this communal?

Kashmir issue- Do you think this was because Kashmiris are Muslims or do you think it is a territorial dispute?

Now finally CAA/NRC- The government went out of its way to say that this is not going to affect the Indian Muslim citizens but still there was panic and the spin given was government is getting rid of Muslims but thats fine from the outside looking in if you feel that this is discriminatory.

So that is 1 decision that can remotely look like an agenda against Muslims if you half-interpret it.

Talking about lynching. Let me ask you this, if you have a religious Hindu friend with you, would you taunt him by eating beef because you have the freedom to eat what you want or are you going to respect his beleifs? vice-versa if the roles are reversed, should someone who eats pork/bacon as a freedom if you are clearly making the other guy uncomfortable?

Try this in any rural area be it in India or Pakistan. Let us see what the reaction will be if they find out that you are violating their religious sentiments with something that one may feel a minor issue like eating a forbidden meat or drinking alcohol. What do you think will happen? This happens all the time unfortunately in our part of the world were religion overshadows rational thinking and logic. How is the government to blame for this? I am not saying lynching is justified but neither is this a official government problem, it is a law and order problem and sure governments can do better here. That is inefficiency which is obviously not a new trait.

Do you know who was the only prime minister to put his ego aside and take a bus to Lahore and extend a hand of friendship. Do you know that he has a RSS background and was from BJP? Even though a month after that there was Kargil that's a different discussion.

I will not deny that exploitation happens but that happens for all poor people. Do you think SRK or Azim Premji have been having problems? Hell a guy like Shami who was accused of lot of things way worse, was brought out of all the mess he got himself into because he is very important to Indian cricket. Again that says you are only as valuable based on what you can deliver. That's the way world works. This isnn't about religion or caste or government agenda.

Unfortunately every small thing that has been happening since time immemorial is being published as Hindutva or BJP atrocities. You can post whatever you want but all I am saying is use some common sense and some fact checking before you post from any handle. There is so much social media content out there that you may not be comfortable with some of the things that are posted their too.

Again you are seeing this from a BJP/Hindutva angle. Haven't these Tableeghi people been irresponsible and created nuisance even in Pakistan? Do you endorse what they are doing?

Fine maybe some harsh words are used for them by some individuals that shouldn't be used but it doesn't make these guys sympathetic. They should be called out for their irresponsible behavior in a pandemic

The coronavirus started in Pakistan from the Zaireen, the returning Shia pilgrims. There was no campaign against Shias.

Next was the Tableeghi Jamaat. No one started a campaign against Deobandis.

There is a difference between calling out people for being irresponsible vs. completely demonizing them.

The problem is that when you have politicians and TV channels blaring out buzzwords such as "Corona bomb" and "Corona Jihadi" and "Jamaati super-spreaders," then a perception begins to develop in society. People start believing that "they" are doing it deliberately or that "they" are dangerous and must be stopped.

Eventually, this all steeps into society and we see the result in the common people and social media. I have barely seen any sectarian or communal comments in Pakistan blaming a certain community or faith for the spread of coronavirus. On the other hand - from Indians, I have seen so many examples of such content that there is no end to it. And that is the problem.

Why are people randomly spreading fake videos about Muslims spreading coronavirus in India? I don't think there is any other country in the world where such a phenomenon is happening.

To understand there is a problem, there has to be a recognition of the problem first.

You should first blame our pathetic and C grade media for inventing terms like Corona Jihad and communalising Covid19. Also the number of fake news spread against them is unbelievable. If you have time there is a thread in this forum where I and others have shared fake news forwarded by Indians. Kindly go through that thread. :inti

Sorry but what is wrong in that tweet if I may ask. Is it not a fact that coronavirus cases in India spiked up due to Tableegi Jamaat people? Is it not on video that these people tried to pelt stones on healthworkers? I think the issue here is we are trying to shoot the messanger for highlighting the reason rather than blaming the reason itself because it does not fit the agenda.

There are bigots from every country, party and religion. If you think all Indian muslims are saints and they are getting attacked by hindus for no reason...you are living in fools world. India is a country of 1.5 billion people but all we are doing in this thread is selectively picking issues where muslims are being targetted and bumping this thread to prove India is becoming islamophobic. But at the same time, a counter narrative or other side of the story is never presented.

Issues like the below will never get posted.

Some Indians really define themselves by their hate of Muslims. Current Indian government included.

Do you think Tableeghi Jamaat are engaging in "Corona Jihad" and what do you think their "real intentions" are?

Just so that I know your point of view here.

Do you think anyone who likes Modi is bhakt? Or consume gau mutra? But people use those terms regularly. You need to understand we live in a twitter world where people comes up with fancy words regularly. But it should not deter us from the real message of the tweet. Tableegi people are the main reason of corona spike in India and its a fact. There is no harm in calling spade a spade.

BTW, Imran Khan used Corona Jihad terminology first. So dont blame if others use it (it you are so offended with it anyway)

The Tableeghi Jamaat as you yourself acknowledged above are not only creating nuisance in India but even in islamic countries like Pakistan and Malaysia.

If this was one odd isolated incident sure, I can agree with your sentiment but being irresponsible, not caring for other fellow Citizens (Other Muslims included just for your clarification) time and time again is what has made them a symbol of menace. It has nothing to do with all Muslims or Islam.

The Corona Jihad is just a fancy sounding catchphrase to grab attention because unless you are a Muslim most of the world associates it in a negative way like almost a synonym for spreading chaos . They may not be aware of the real meaning. Sure, if using the word Jihad offends you for religious purposes than I will admit it shouldn’t be used.

Please don't be condescending. Both of us know the difference.

Corona Jihad term used in Indian media = Tableeghi Jamaat doing Jihad (religious act) by spreading coronavirus.

Jihad against coronavirus, a term used by IK = People should do all they can to help others. Do you even know what the Corona Tigers were set up for? Their jihad is to find people who are deserving of support from the govt. welfare program, assist in spreading awareness about the disease, encourage people to follow governmental advice.

Please don't compare this with your media claiming that Tableeghis are doing "Jihad" by spreading coronavirus.

The difference is that in other countries, they were dealt with on a case by case basis with the understanding that they had committed mistakes and were guilty of not listening to govt. advice. In Pakistan's case, the govt. could have done more to stop the congregations early on but they were also guilty of not doing so.

When the coronavirus spread in a church in South Korea, did anyone hear about Christians' "real intentions?"

I repeat my question. Is there any other country where the spread of coronavirus has become a communal issue?

Islamophobia Is Worsening the Anxieties of the Lockdown

When Zehra Mehdi first talked to Naseem Ahmed*, a boy hailing from a small city in north India’s Uttar Pradesh, she couldn’t believe what the little lad had been going through. Mehdi, a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, who has been holding pro bono counselling sessions for people suffering from anxiety during the ongoing lockdown in India, had to immediately talk to his mother instead.

“He was tied to a bed by his own mother who feared her son would be killed by some mob,” Mehdi said.

In India, the proliferation of cases the novel coronavirus have been largely blamed on Muslims and Naseem’s mother had seen footage of some young members of the community being beaten by a mob for ‘spreading’ the virus.

“She had gone crazy fearing for her son’s safety. She cried a lot and it took some time to make her understand that tying him was not the solution to her fears.”

Naseem’s case is one amongst dozens of cases that Mehdi has encountered since the last month which are directly related to anxiety caused by Islamophobia. “In this lockdown, you would expect a lot of people getting stressed because of being isolated socially but every second case of anxiety I have been receiving is somehow related to Islamophobia,” Mehdi said.

Last month, as the world’s biggest lockdown began in India, authorities linked hundreds of cases of the deadly coronavirus to members of the Tablighi Jamat – a Muslim missionary group that held a large congregation in the national capital in early March. This led to a renewed wave of hatred and anger against Muslims in a country where the fault lines between the Muslim minority and Hindu majority are already widening.

Muslims have been targeted in a spree of attacks across the country as narratives against the community are being spread by constant misinformation on social media platforms.

“There is vilification of Muslims as if they have deliberately spread this virus across the country,” said Sabah Siddiqui, a psychotherapist and an Assistant Professor at FLAME University in Pune, who is also holding pro-bono counselling sessions during the pandemic. “It is affecting their mental health, their way of thinking and perceiving things. There is anxiety as to what the world is going to meet us as?”

Siddiqui says there has been a substantial spike in the number of clients seeking counselling sessions for stress-related to Islamophobia during the pandemic.

A large section of those who have sought counselling from both Mehdi and Siddiqui are students who participated in the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in the country. The controversial Act which was enacted by the government of India on December 12 last year saw students from various universities, particularly from Muslim minority educational institutions like Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University, protest against the law for being discriminatory on the basis of religion.

The protests then spread across the country. The act which fast tracks the Indian citizenship only for non-Muslims from three neighbouring countries – Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan – also led to clashes between groups opposing and supporting the legislation, eventually escalating into a full-blown communal riot in the national capital resulting in the loss of over 50 lives.

“Owing to the lockdown, many of these students returned to their native places after riots in Delhi for the first time, ” said Mehdi who is also a research scholar at Columbia University. “So, apart from the lockdown anxiety and fear of academic uncertainty, they are worried about how people in their neighbourhood would react and what their opinions about them would be. They are concerned that if anything goes wrong during the lockdown in their localities it would be them who would be blamed.”

A boy hailing from the central Indian state of Bihar, who consulted Mehdi for a psychotherapeutic session was perturbed because some of his childhood Hindu friends who had earlier supported the anti-CAA protests were now sharing hateful messages and posts on social media after the Tablighi Jamat incident. “He was ready to fight against anyone but not his own friends. This had mentally drained him,” said Mehdi. “Things can turn really ugly in your head,” she added.

The anxiety has even led some members of the Muslim community to attempt to end their own lives. Dilshad Muhamud, a Muslim man from the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh died by suicide. Even though he had tested negative for the coronavirus he faced a social boycott from his neighbours for his alleged links to the Tablighi Jamaat.

“There is barely any escape route. We can’t complain, not to our parents because they are as mentally stressed as us; not to our friends for some of them are suspicious of us. We have to bear all this alone, ” said Sikander Ahmed*, a Muslim student studying at a premier university in New Delhi.

However, it is not only Muslims who are stressed because of rampant Islamophobia during the lockdown. “I get emails and calls from non-Muslims as well, who complain that rising Islamophobia and increasing attacks on Muslims is giving them anxiety. These people, mostly members of the youth, are actually annoyed with their families for their capacity of hatred towards Muslims. They fight and have heated arguments with their parents and relatives who support discrimination against the Muslim community,” said Mehdi.

60 Jamaat followers in 'quarantine' at Agra centre for 42 days, 24 of them ill, all have tested negative twice

AGRA: At least 60 people, including 24 facing health issues ranging from diabetes to heart-related ailments, are lodged at a quarantine centre in Agra for the last 42 days in spite of clearing the Covid-19 tests twice, first on April 3 and then on April 20. They have said conditions are "prison-like" and that there is "ill-treatment by staff" at the centre in Agra’s Sikandra area.

Mostly residents of Delhi, Andhra Pradesh and parts of Uttar Pradesh, all of them had contacted the administration after it came to the fore that government wanted all those who had attended the Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi’s Nizamuddin should come forward. Of the 60, 12 are women.

When contacted, additional district magistrate (ADM) Prabhakant Awasthi said, “These Tablighi Jamaat people are involved in criminal offence. They will be released only after the approval of police.”

But police said that there was no case filed against them.

Station house officer (SHO) of Sikandra police station, Arvind Kumar, said, “No FIR has been registered against them. After the lockdown, they were not allowed to move out of the district. State government and administration will decide on their release.”

Those suffering from health issues claimed that they were not getting medicines.

Some went on to say that they are being “unnecessarily targeted” by the authorities.

A businessman from Ghazipur lodged at the centre told TOI, “Local leaders of Tablighi Jamaat had themselves informed the police about us. We were shifted here on March 31. Local authorities had told us that after testing of samples, all those who reported Covid-19 negative will be released. Our samples were collected on April 1 and all of us were confirmed Covid-19 negative on April 3.”

He added, “On the next day, we were informed about the compulsory quarantine period of 14 days. After 14 days in quarantine, we were told that resampling will be done. Samples were collected on April 18 and all of us were again confirmed Covid-19 negative on April 20. Since then, we have been pleading with officials to allow us to go home. But they often misbehave when we ask them about the date of our release”.

Another inmate from Delhi said, “It feels like we are serving a jail term. Authorities must understand that we have not done any crime. Our family members are also in deep distress. We request chief minister Yogi Adityanath to take cognizance of our problem and order our release”.

An elderly man at the centre said, “I am a heart patient. Besides, more than 20 people have high blood pressure, diabetes and other health issues. We are not getting the required medicines even after repeated requests. Quality of food being served here is poor too. Soon, some of us will die if not released.”

A video of the quarantine centre shows filthy toilets with no water supply. The centre has two toilets for 60 people.

Chief medical officer of Agra Dr RC Pandey said, “We will be releasing all those tested negative.”

I won't blame those people who are trying to run away from these third class quarantine centres. Hopefully some part of that aid of 1 billion USD can be used to build toilets in India.

Thanks to channels like Times Now, Republic and Zee News for their propaganda against Muslims. This country is run by this paid media these days.

To understand there is a problem, there has to be a recognition of the problem first.

just like local dada is concerned that a perception is being developed about his leader and his people when you post these news

And besides people questioning whether its tablighi jamaat's fault. someone posted many tweets, perhaps you that there were public events before tablighi jamaat ones and the sikh superspreader etc etc. So whoever is asking if tablighis are responsible for the whole of india to spread the irus due to public gathering, then the responsibility of spreading should go to all public gatherings, not just them.

It is convenient to blame and demonise them, atleast they should accept and be honest about their hate, they might get some respect as a brave adversary

^ If they remain honest how will it serve their agenda?

Now Gujarat is one of the worst hit state in India with high case fatality rate for Covid 19. And there held a massive event welcoming Donald Trump just 1 and half month after the 1st corona virus case was detected in India. But will anybody talk about that cluster? Never. It doesn’t serve them right.

These whatsapp graduates doesn’t want to look out for truth because they are too brainwashed. Let them live in their fake bubble and enjoy others sufferings.

I want our youth to play their role in helping our fight against the COVID 19 by joining our Corona Tiger Force which will be organised to do jihad against the suffering caused by this pandemic
— Imran Khan (@ImranKhanPTI) April 1, 2020

What a stupid post! Familiarize yourself what Jihad actually means and what “Jihad against Pandemic” means.

And what is that agenda? I don't understand? clearly driving out 180m odd muslims is not practically possible

People will always hate each other, be it due to religion or race, or skin colour, or due to their success or what they have or possess or achieved.

But why wouldn't they be honest about their hate? What is it that they fear? That in a fair fight they wont win? Do they not feel inferior and cowards if they have to mask their hates? As agendas are cowardly

Maybe once they are honest, do they fear that muslims of india will be able to decide for themselves and what is to become of their fate?
India as claimed by many here that they are a superpower, do not have to rely on aids, so a backlash from the international community should not be a problem. Clearly India is a huge consumer market, so they can leverage that and its a do whatever you want and get away card and economic problem or sanctions should not be an issue either.

So what is the agenda and why?
