Najam Sethi has been unanimously elected as the Pakistan Cricket Board’s Chairman for the next three years by the PCB’s new Board of Governors (BoG) on Wednesday. The development has taken place a week after the Islamabad High Court admitted for hearing a petition challenging his nomination to the Board of Governors of Pakistan Cricket Board.

No other member of the BoG filed nomination papers for the post as all the 10-members voted for Sethi. He will now replace Shaharyar Khan, whose three-year tenure at the post ended on Sunday. Sethi was expected to become the new chairman as he was nominated on the PCB’s BoG last month by former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif.

According to reports, Sethi enjoyed the backing of former cricketers who insisted that Sethi was the best choice for the post as he had also served as the head of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) chairman.

“I support him all the way and the main reason is PSL. Many people before him discussed the idea of PSL but no one was able to materialise the plans. Sethi not only made is possible, but organised two successful editions of Pakistan’s top class T20 league and also the final of the second edition in Lahore,” the Express Tribune quoted Akram as saying.

“Four years are enough [to understand any system] and now he knows which person to use for what job. He is fully aware of all the staff and management, which makes him the best candidate,” said Wasim.

Other players behind Sethi include former Pakistan skipper Rashid Latif who said, “Sethi is the best candidate for the chairmanship of PCB and he will win. He made the PSL a big success and he will do the same with PCB. He has been trying to invite international teams to Pakistan and he will succeed in that too. He has also been working on youngsters. The team is on the top, the captain is on the top, PSL is on the top and now he will take PCB on to the top.”

Avoid spending money on litigation against BCCI: Miandad

ISLAMABAD: Former captain Javed Miandad has proposed to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) not to bother about playing bilateral series with traditional rivals India and instead focus on improving domestic cricket. “I believe we can raise standard of our game by investing on domestic cricket and not by playing against India. We’ve broken the jinx by defeating them in ICC Champions Trophy and I’m sure we’ll continue repeating that in future provided we pay attention on the domestic cricket,” he said Thursday. “This is where you can produce quality players. Other cricket playing nations are focusing on that and we should not remain behind on that front,” the erstwhile skipper added.

He urged the PCB to invest in domestic cricket and avoid litigation against Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for not fulfilling Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to play series with Pakistan during 2015-2023. The PCB had said that it would file a case against BCCI in the International Cricket Council (ICC) dispute resolution committee for non-fulfillment of the MoU. The PCB has also hired a British law firm to represent it in the case and file the compensation claim with the committee.

He said the newly-elected PCB chairman Najam Sethi should appoint former or first-class cricketers as presidents of regions, associations and zones in order to improve the game in the country. “He must also improve his advisory board and call for cricketers like Majid Khan who can provide helping hand in improving domestic cricket,” he said. Miandad credited Sehti for holding two successful sessions of Pakistan Super League (PSL) saying it had helped in bringing talented youngsters to fore. Meanwhile, former cricketer Iqbal Qasim felicitated Sethi for being elected as the new PCB chairman. “Sethi has been associated directly or indirectly with the board for quite a long time. He is a seasoned man and hopefully he’ll run board’s affairs in a befitting manner,” he maintained. He also commended Sethi for successfully conducting PSL’s first two editions adding that the League had helped Pakistan cricket in many ways. “Sethi knows about all PCB issues and it would be easy for him to tackle them.”

I agree with the part when he says that we should be investing in domestics and need to improve the standard of domestic cricket.

But then he goes with his usual urging PCB to have heads of regions who are ex-cricketers which is rediculous. You don't need to be a cricketer to run the organisations. You need organisation skills and that is all we are lacking at this point in time.

It is not the former cricketing great which is going to mend our domestic(certainly not Javed Miandad) but someone who is brilliant at running the organisation(without a prerequisite of being a cricketer). We all know how JM ripped PCB in his tenure as GM for doing zilch.

Indirectly saying that I should be made an influential administrator and he just needs a fat pay check for holding onto his chair, that is all.

Najam Sethi off to Sri Lanka to attend ACC meeting

LAHORE: Newly elected chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Najam Sethi, left for Sri Lanka early Friday to attend meeting of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) in Colombo. Ahead of his departure from Lahore airport, Sethi said the two-day conference would bring important discussions to the table. He said the moot will, among other matters, decide about the hosting venue of the Under-19 Asia Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Bengaluru, India in November this year. Media reports earlier stated that the PCB would raise an objection to India hosting the Under-19 Asia Cup amid political tension between the two countries. On the much-awaited Pakistan-India series, Sethi assured he would be holding talks with officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India in this regard. He also affirmed that the PCB would make efforts to arrange for the last few matches of Sri Lankan series to be played in Pakistan. Sethi, after being elected PCB chairman for a three-year term earlier this week, has vowed to bring international cricket back to the country after years of isolation. Barring a limited-over series against Zimbabwe in 2015, Pakistan has not hosted foreign squads since a militant attack targeted the visiting Sri Lankan team in 2009.
