LAHORE- August 10, 2017: The Player Selection Ceremony for the National T-20 Cup 2017 was held at a local hotel today. The eight participating teams Karachi Whites, Lahore Whites, Lahore Blues, Islamabad, FATA, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, and Faisalabad selected their teams from a list of over 150 players from all over the country.

All participating teams were picked by their respective regional head, selector, captain and coach. Haroon Rasheed, Director Cricket Operations, PCB while addressing the ceremony expressed his pleasure at the organization of the tournament and hoped that the event will provide a platform for youngsters to showcase their talent.

The eight-team tournament will commence from August 25, 2017 in two phases, where the first round matches would be played in Multan till August 31, 2017. The second and final stage of the tournament would start on September 4, 2017 in Faisalabad and conclude on September 10, 2017.

A total number of 31 matches including the final will be played, where each team will play seven matches. The top four teams among the eight teams will compete in the semi-final on September 9, 2017 at Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad, whereas the final will take place at the same venue on September 10, 2017.

Fakhar is part of Peshawar's squad so I assume he is available. It's a joke he isn't one of the captains- he did a brilliant job in PC.

Why is Hafeez one of the captains? Absolutely ridiculous. Mark this post- he is going to play the youngsters out of position because he feels threatened by them. Feel sorry for Talat.

Will be extremely silly to call back Zaman and Amir from their county stint for this rubbish tournament.

Apparently there is only one Karachi team in this tournament because one side from Karachi was relegated from the first class season. Can't understand the logic of relegating a team from a tournament based on its performance in a completely different format. And I for sure don't like the look of this Karachi side. As a Karachi supporter I believe KCCA needs to boycott this farcical tournament. I believe PCB is playing the game of petty politics.

I like the selection of Arsal Sheikh. Think he has the potential of becoming the Murlitharan of Pakistan. Definitely better then Saqlain Mushtaq.

Very excited to see SHahyan shah afridi is picked by fata lets see how he performs

I love Sarfraz but he's as pathetic as the others when it comes to picking his buddies/seniors for these domestic tourneys.

Sahibzada Farhan?

Edit: In FSD, Hope Misbah leaves out his love for TTFs

Islamabad team is awful with Shan Masood, Rahat Ali, Umar Gul and Arsal Sheikh. Also why's Jahid Ali, Salman Butt and Azhar Ali been picked for T20s ?

Anyway, these are the players whose performances I'll track because of the roles we need to fill in the LOI teams. We need another hard hitting opener to partner Fakhar Zaman, seam bowling ARs and off-spinners. I'd also seek more pace bowling depth.

Faisalabad - Sahibzada Farhan and Fahim Ashraf.

FATA - Mukhtar Ahmed and Awais Zia as we need an aggressive partner for Fakhar Zaman in T20s now we lost Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif. Usama Mir is also worth watching but Mickey/Sarfraz won't disturb a settled bowling unit after CT win.

Islamabad - Nauman Anwar though he seems to have gone off the boil recently.

Karachi Whites - Nobody of interest, though I guess you'd want to see how Haris Sohail is playing after his long layoff. Maybe Danish Aziz ?

Lahore Blues - Hussain Talat, Agha Salman and Ghulam Mudassar.

Lahore Whites - Aamer Yamin and Amad Butt.

Peshawar - Nobody of interest but Saif Badar if he gets a game.

Rawalpindi - Ahsan Ali, Mohammad Irfan jr, Mohammad Asghar and Umair Masood (let's see if he's any good as we need wicketkeeping depth).

Where are the defending Champions, Karachi Blues?

Where are the defending Champions, Karachi Blues?

The top 8 First Class teams will play the national One Day and T20 Cups. Karachi Blues isn't among the top 8 First Class teams.

Selecting teams for a T20 competition based on First Class performance. PCB Zindabad :salute

Hope Rawalpindi and Faisalabad play the final! FATA is atrocious, baring Shaheen Shah Afridi. Karachi, as always, disappointed me with their selection. Peshawar, I guess is a mix bag of a team. Don't want to comment on any of Lahore squads!

Arsal Sheikh

And PCB wanted to root out nepotism through draft system.

can't really say which team i like but definitely sure about which team i despise.

Tournament filled with uncles .. Is sai behtr to Faisal bank tha atleast we used to have Sialkot and Pink teams full of youngsters.

Karachi has quite a few TTFs as well: Anu, Technique, Zulfi Cobra, Khurram, Akbar

it's the akmal and butt overload that annoys me. on the happy front, somewhere in the world, a person who posts by the name hawkeye on pp will be having a day to rejoice and praise the universe.

redemption has come home early. happy for him i think.

Gotta give it to Hawkeye though. His support for the Akmal clan remains endless regardless of how many fitness and performance tests they fail each year.

and his day has come now so his patience has been rewarded.

Below are the names I will be following- obviously I have excluded players who are already established in PCT. The ones in bold are the ones I will be keeping a particularly close eye on (typically promising young batsmen, all-rounders and/or t20 specialists):

Faisalabad:

Sahibzada Farhan
• Faheem Ashraf
• Asif Ali (assuming this is the one who plays for IU in PSL, as Lahore Whites have also selected an Asif Ali)

As IU captain, Misbah has done well in giving youngsters game time (Shadab, Talat, Raees, Amad Butt and even Asif Ali) so hopefully he does the same here. Particularly looking forward to Farhan and Ashraf- they should benefit from Misbah’s experience.

FATA:

• Shaheen Shah Afridi
• Khushdil Shah
• Naved Malik

• Mukhtar Ahmed (had an average tournament last year but PCT could do with some aggression)
• Usama Mir
• Usman Shinwari
Sameen Gul (need more r/h pace bowlers)
• Awais Zia (same as Mukhtar)
• Nabi Gul (assuming it’s the one that is signed up with Zalmi)

Excluding internationals, this is probably the best squad in terms of (i) young talent and (ii) t20 specialists. I haven’t seen Shinwari captain before but he has a decent squad to work with. Will be following this squad closely.

I’m interested to see how Asif Afridi performs- haven’t seen him play but he has some decent stats. Anyone have any info on him?

ISLAMABAD:

• Nauman Anwar (had a very poor tournament last year but hopefully he rediscovers some form)
• Sarmad Bhatti

By far the worst squad from a young talent POV- some very poor selections- Masood, Rahat, Gul, Sheikh etc. The international players (Hassan Ali, Shoaib and Imad) are good/excellent t20 players so they will probably cover up how bad this squad is, but for me this is the worst squad from a young talent POV.

KARACHI WHITES:

Danish Aziz
Mir Hamza
• Haris Sohail (I know he was in the CT squad, but he hasn’t played recently and I want to see his form)

Whilst I am looking very much looking forward to the trio of Sarfaraz, Raees and Sohail some of Karachi’s selections are poor, such as Zulfi and Manzoor. There are better options out there.

LAHORE BLUES

Hussain Talat
Agha Salman (heard a lot about him so let’s see how he does)
• Imam-ul-Haq
• Ghulam Mudassar (still young but he looks a real talent)

Feel sorry for Agha Salman and Talat- Hafeez will probably play them out of position on purpose. Feel particularly bad for Salman as he is in direct competition with Hafeez for a space in PCT. Only positive is that Mudassar (and probably Jabbar) are likely to get an extended run because Amir and Junaid are unlikely to play. Let’s see what they can do.

LAHORE WHITES

Aamer Yamin
Amad Butt- (seems to have regressed, hopefully the NCA camp has done him some good)
• Hassan Khan
• Mohammad Irfan (FATA)

The less said about the pre-allocated picks the better (the captain in particular). Seam bowling all-rounder duo of Yamin and Butt and spin duo of Khan and Irfan should be good.

PESHAWAR

Saif Badar
• Naved Yasin

If Rifatullah plays ahead of Badar, I give up. Badar will hopefully get some game time as Zaman won’t be available and Peshawar’s batting looks a little weak.

RAWALPINDI

Umair Masood
• Ahsan Ali
• Zain Abbas

Two promising prospects. Ahsan played some good innings in last year’s tournament- was impressed by his strike rotation and his timing. Needs to be more consistent though- had some problems against left arm pace, hopefully he has gone away and worked on this.

Out of all the squads, Rawalpindi are the only ones to select an up-and-coming wicketkeeper in Masood- well done.

It’s also worth noting the spin trio of Shadab, Asghar and Nawaz- will be interesting to see if all three play. Iftikhar Ahmed is a poor choice, but on the whole a decent squad.

Isnt his ban over?

And also couldnt fin Raza Hassan as well? Now that his ban is over i guess.

Unbelievably poor squads, and if I consider Amir & Fakhar'll be out from these 120, it's difficult to believe that these are among top 120 cricketers of PAK!!! From my head, I can see at least half a dozen missing names; which could be due to injury but there are few names beyond any logic.

I think, draft system is effective, only if it's applied properly. Open drafts are worst idea for younger players, under PCB like set up. In US Team Sports, they do use draft, but that's different than this. In NBA or MLB, every franchise has a settled team - during June Draft (NBA), teams pick one or two rookey, based on their team needs (& availability of free agents), therefore certainly top 50-60 young players are integrated every year into NBA into already an established squad. By chance, if someone misses out, he has couple of more chances in next 1/2 years - at the same time, Bryant was fast tracked at 18, before competing high school.

But, PCB is using draft for selecting squad from scratch every year, and then selectors are picking their known faces - that's disaster. And they are planning to implement it in FC as well, which I think is a brain child of Haroon Rashid :(. May be, in T20, or at stress may be in List A, draft system can work, because those two formats are played with best combination, rather than best XI - but never in this way. Even in List A, draft should be limited to tournaments with at most 3/4 teams, which basically to club top 50 known faces for a short tournament as selection tool before a major tournament.

I understand PCB's problem - since there are probably 16 regions and may be 134 Corporate teams, from Habib Bank to Omar Associates, God knows better .... therefore they can't fix teams & players - if they do with 8 teams, over 50% top players will miss out, for being part of a weaker team; so, it has to be some sort of draft. BUT, it MUST have to be a closed draft, otherwise any such tournament will become whose who ......

The idea of a closed draft is that, National selectors/coaching staffs will select 120 players - approximately cascading 8 teams of 15 players, with similar 8 players clubbed into one strata/round. Teams at draft will pick one player from each set, based of their draft pick - after 15 rounds, more or less 8 teams should be similar in strength and cascading the National team. Thus, Ul Haq (National selectors) has the control of the payers he wants to be part of the tournament, while Mickey/Sarfraz (Coach/Captain) can easily identify a particular type of player for a particular role from the tournament. For example - in one group could be 8 all-rounders, so probably 1st 4 picks will be Shadab, Imad, Fahim & Yamin; but next 4 also will be like Hammad, Nasim, Aga Salman & Bilal Asif - so that all 8 knows their role & probably'll bat at 6/7. At current structure, it's actually counter productive - just look at one team, Amir, JK, Mudassar in same team, means 3 left arm pacers, then that Imran Khalid guy is a SLAO & icing on the cake is both Nasim & Aga 'll be fighting for one spot while Zulfi Baba will fight with Azam for that one spinner's spot - ideally, both should be is same round, so that they are picked by different teams.

Regarding, missing of one Karachi team actually indicates immaturity & shallowness at long term planning level. I understand, it's a 2 edged knife - they dropped last years' champion for Taufique Umar case (dropping the best Test opener for ODI failure, that too for MoHa....), but what else they could have done? THERE is no follow up T20 tournament, neither Division 2 - so, either they have to drop teams based on FC standings or have to play those 8 teams every year (can drop bottom 2, but which teams & based on what 2 teams will replace them -
there is no Division 2 or Patrons cup for T20).

This is something I explained in my post on Domestic cricket - either PCB has to fix 8 teams covering whole PAK (separate from FC region, may be based on 8 (or 10) top Cities - Karachi, Lahore, F'bad, R'pindi, I'bad, Multan, Queta, Peshawar (S'kot & Hydrabad as well in case of 10 teams) and through closed draft top 120-150 players picked every year. Here, teams are fixed, only players change every year, but no such dispute that defending T20 Champs misses out qualification because of 4 day results :uakmal :afridi: :trump2

Or the 2nd option is to split the tournament into 2 divisions of 8 each, with all 16 Regions participating - 3 relegated/promoted every year. And, this one can be with or without draft, because this time whole PAK is covered by 16 already established set up - regions should manage their squad for every year, may be under instructions for Ul Haq. Though, the players' base is increasing to 240 here, which should reduce the quality, but I tend to favor the 16 team model, because more than individual skills, T20 is based on combination and PAK actually has enough talent for 240 T20 players (but not more than 150 for FC cricket), but this system includes 2 divisions (so, finishing in top 5 or 3 is critical, more than finishing runners up in current system - in Europe, teams are more focused to finish in a Champion's League spot or outside relegation zone more than winning domestic Cup). Besides, this system creates a year long continuity under same management - that City based draft is a constant change every year, which isn't helpful grooming younger players.

DRsohail - that thread is probably closed, where you tagged me.

mak36 - bro, it's just the starting, unless PSL puts a cap on number of years as Emerging, you'll see the likes of Arshal Sheikhs making the squad every time till 23, then fake certificate to become 19 again ............. trust me, I didn't write that essay just to down play PSL.

Islamabad team is just to make numbers.. it will shocking if they win even a single game.. pathetic is a very small word..

Where is the senior Mohammad Irfan?
Isnt his ban over?

And also couldnt fin Raza Hassan as well? Now that his ban is over i guess.

Mohammad Irfan's ban is not over. He was banned in late March for a year or a minimum of six months if he was to help in the investigations of PSL spot fixing scandal. Either way, it hasn't been 6 months yet let alone a year

Im glad the captaincy is with amin and not with sohail tanvir

Why Misbah is still playing ? , oh forgot , he is the future of Pakistan team , makes sense.

PCB claiming on the Facebook page that players playing in CPL and English domestic cricket will be called back for this competition.

If that is the case, IMO that will be a ridiculous decision.

You cannot just pull a T20 comp out your backside, announce the squads and fixtures 2 weeks before the start date then expect the players to give up on valuable experience around the world to pull out of their contracts and come along to deal with your unorganised garbage

I have played street cricket with Faizan Riaz of Islamabad. Good to see him selected for a televised tournament. Fluent batsman. Used to bowl like Murali but called for chucking.

Hard to understand the continuous disregard of Shahid Ilyas one of Islamabad's best batsman and former u-19 player.

Poor guy missed out on well-deserved selection for this tournament.

Ridiculous that Gohar wasn't selected. From being a flight away of making his Test debut, the poor guy can't even make it into a single team for a domestic tournament.

A former Pakistan captain. :butt

I find this decision absolutely appalling.
An ex captain and a convicted fixer finds himself as captain of a domestic team.
Beyond belief and this is precisely why I refuse to support Sethi and his cronies..

I chuckled at the "Will Reach Goals" part... dude give up already.. you are 35 years old for Christ's sake. It's just not gonna happen.

He often mentions Misbah and Younis when people bring up the age argument. Kami does the same.

The likes of Faisal plan to continue for another decade, I'm sure.

Poor fellow - great Mamu cost what could have been a fantastic career, instead of pushing him through back doors, Mamu should have availed him 3 years contract at Sussex or Glamargoan - by 2006-07, this guy should have been PAK's replacement of Ul Haq & I am serous here - no Pom batsmen ever mastered Warne with the confidence than this man did as a kid, while he was fantastic with his back-foot drives and cuts either side of point and his footwork against spinners was better than anyone debuting for Poms in this millennium apart from KP.

Mamu himself was the toughest character & hardest worker, sadly his nephew was born with a great privilege - nephew of one of the ATG batsman.

Hope Rawalpindi and Faisalabad play the final! FATA is atrocious, baring Shaheen Shah Afridi. Karachi, as always, disappointed me with their selection. Peshawar, I guess is a mix bag of a team. Don't want to comment on any of Lahore squads!

Care to explain this?

Imad should not accept captaincy with this pathetic team of Islamabad. He will lose and people will make calls on his captaincy skills then.
He should see that he has been made the scapegoat here.

Mohammad Irfan's ban is not over. He was banned in late March for a year or a minimum of six months if he was to help in the investigations of PSL spot fixing scandal. Either way, it hasn't been 6 months yet let alone a year

Ban is counted from the time of suspension which I guess happened in February 2017 and his ban is of 6 months effective if he doesnt involve in any other issue during that time. If he does involve in something than the ban is of 1 year.

Thats the good thing about draft system as players are not picked as they played a lot of first class cricket and have astonishing averages but rather on their international potential. Captain, coach and other ppl part if these teams managements pick players on the basis of how they rate players as they have seen them play and have played against them.

To be honest eye for talent is what gives you players like Shadab and Hassan Ali which would have struggled to make international squads on stats alone.

Still share some names if possible.

Yes, he must be good because he scored 104, 133 and 57 against Australia under 16s and wasn't bad in T20s either against them. I don't normally get excited about 15 year olds but I am keeping an eye on this kid, also a keeper
