I am looking to apply for Canada PR through anagency in Chennai. Just have a few doubts which I feel someone in PP can clear

1. Once I get the PR visa stamp on passport, how many days will it take to get the PR card? Will I need to travel to Canada and wait for a month to get the PR card?

2. Once I get the PR card and come back, will it be easy to apply for job in Canada (IT related) from India itself so that I can go there with the job in hand?

3. How easy is to get jobs in IT sector in Canada?

From my research Australia has a better IT market than Canada.. I was contemplating going to Canada but the weather and lack of career growth opportunities compared to Australia make me go in favour of Australia.. only good thing about Canada is it's near USA and once you get Canadian citizenship you can move to USA to get into the biggest IT market..

the Canadian govt websites provide every info you need regarding PR card.

go on their website and you will get all the answers to your queries related to PR

45 minumum after they have invited..whats are your points btw.

You can apply through job bank but tbh IT is pretty trash there unless u r in banking and ETL tools with more than 8 years of experience

As already mentioned above w.r.t IT Aus is way better for PR and UK,USA for short terms.

1. Create Express Entry profile, it'll ask you all your employment and education details. You would also need IELTS to make this profile.

2. The Express Entry system will generate some points for you based on the info you provided.

3. Every two weeks a draw is held and if your points are greater than the minimum points in the draw then you get Invitation to Apply (ITA)

4. You can now apply for Permanent Residency.

5. Around 3-4 months after you apply you get a passport request and you have to send in your passport for PR

6. Once you receive your passport back you have to perform landing in the country (meaning you have to enter Canada)

7. Once you do landing they give you a letter based on which you can get social insurance number, health card, drivers licence etc. When you make social insurance you can then find work and don't need your PR card.

8. When you were doing your landing they would ask for a mailing address and two months later you will get PR card at that address.

Also the draw points are very small these days my friend who studied in Pak, worked and lived in Pak his entire life got ITA.

Pretty clear post but i think if its being applied from outside Canada academic evaluation has to to be done by a third party.

Probably the only extra point i would like to add and yes points have fallen to 443.

Actually it dropped all the way down to 415 last week, which means if you have a Pakistani degree (third party approved Canadian equivalent obviously) and 2-3 years of Pakistani verified work experience in a technical field then you get ITA.

my 2 friends from lums did this

Depends on the job, mostly ppl from my city go from the existing company they are working with and change after 1-2 years.

Right now imho Canada has only blue collared more than white collared.

The package and work they would be getting in Canada would be alot better than Pakistan.

Definitely not true in my line of work (engineering consulting). Since the Canadian dollar is down to 0.7 to the US dollar alot of projects are coming from the US since the US companies can get same quality of work at roughly 30% less cost. Also, due to same time zones and language there are no coordination issues that exist when outsourcing to Asia. Another factor is that some of the engineering standards in Canada are the same as US (even if they aren't, Canadian engineers are fully versed in US standards) and this also makes Canada a more attractive market for outsourcing work to rather than Asia.

It's not just in engineering. Three of my friends are employed in Bank of America in Toronto, now BoA does not have branches in Canada but they outsourced their IT/Software development part to Canada (again due to cheaper cost and same time zone etc)

This is true across the board. Another friend of mine works at AMD here and he had an important part to play in the development of their recently released motherboard, Vega.

I can't say I know too much about Australia, but in Canada the IT market in Toronto and Kitchener/Waterloo is huge and growing very fast. There are a ton of IT companies as well as other companies hiring for IT jobs. There are also smaller but growing IT industries in Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver.

* Couldn't edit my previous post, so had to make a new one..

I am a software developer in Canada and the IT market in Toronto and Kitchener/Waterloo is huge and growing very fast. Within these markets, you'll find lot of big name companies like Google, Amazon, IBM, Oracle, several banks, several automotive manufacturers that want developers, etc. There are literally hundreds of smaller companies with < 2000 employees that you might have never heard of as well.

As i said in my post above its still a lot to do with Banking but good to hear about AMD and i see the poster below explaining the same as well, guess more creative IT jobs than the copy paste ones good in long term.

The issue with Canada is also proximity with USA and hardly any protection laws, hope you have heard about Target and what happened to it.But I guess with changes to USA policy it might as well workout for Canada, hearing even auto pilot cars are being tested in Stratford.

Dunno
You hear a lot of folks struggling esp if they were well off here anyway

That's because their degrees aren't recognized here unless it is from a reputable institute.

That is definitely true. If you are foreign educated and/or have only foreign experience then Canada is a pain. You may find odd cases here and there where it worked out for someone but in general, if you are foreign educated you will have a hard time here, even harder if you only have foreign work experience. Some people come here and get a bachelors or a masters from a Canadian university to compensate. I wouldn't recommend coming to Canada unless you plan on getting a degree from Canada.

What about for US education and experience? Would it be treated the same as from any other country, or at par with Canadian education and experience?

Degrees and experience in US, Aus, England and other European countries are generally accepted and recognized. Even degrees from Pakistan, India etc are also recognized after having third party evaluation, however, a lot of employers disregard prior work experience from these locations.

It's not too common for someone working in US to come work in Canada for obvious reasons, but when it does happen, their education and experience does get recognized on par with Canadian education and experience.

What's interesting is that people with foreign education and foreign experience (including those with Pakistani education and experience) have a much easier time finding professional jobs in the US. Canada and Canadian companies are quite protectionist in this regard. I've been part of interview processes where the company would just completely ignore people who do not have experience from Canada or US. And those are the candidates that make it past HR to the hiring managers. Imagine those that only make it to the HR.

Thanks. I recall watching some Canadian TV shows, and there were advertisements during the breaks showing immigrants applying for jobs well below their expectations. There was an Iranian engineer applying for a fast food restaurant job, and a Chinese MBA working as a cleaner. Maybe you guys have seen those ads.

Thanks bro (and all others who replied to the post) for the detailed answers!!

So once you enter Canada for first time, we will have to stay till we get the PR card??

Yes, unfortunately if you leave the country you will not be able to enter unless you have PR card in hand.

I'm not sure if you can get your card mailed to an address outside of Canada and then travel, or the address has to be within Canada.

A ton of cab drivers have masters or PhD. Lot of people working at convenience stores or retail stores are in a similar position too. Ditto for people doing "professional" jobs, but lower paying ones ($12-15/h).

@OP - Did you eventually go?

I’m a strategy consultant who hasn’t worked in Canada before. Planning to apply. My points are 470+. Not sure if enough these days. Hoping for the best.

I’ve heard people have found decent jobs out there. Can anyone throw some light?

The latest draw was held on 7th of Feb and the minimum points were 442. So you would have definitely gotten an "Invitation to Apply" had you made an Express Entry profile before that date. The next draw will be in two-three weeks time.

Thanks. I’m waiting for assessment from WES. Reckon I would be able to apply best by early next month which means I would miss the next draw as well.
Can you help me figure out from where I can ascertain the minimum points of previous draws? Thanks again.

I work in Consulting as well. The market in Canada has been booming, but there's nuance depending on what your line of work is. I lie in Technology Consulting which has been very solid, especially since Canadian provinces are carrying out some large scale projects that they weren't undertaking previously.

With Strategy consulting, the previous year was fantastic with the market doing very well. But there's some apprehension with the crash. Depends also on where you're looking; the top strategy firms will hire irrespective of whether the market is good or not which doesn't hold true the lower you come down the food chain.

1. You will not get PR visa stamp , there is nothing like that , and also landing papers. You will get one time travel visa to Canada. Once you land , you submit the landing papers , and they will note your Canadian address . After that you will be send the PR card to that address in about a month.

2. Its possible , but generally Companies would prefer to have face to face interviews.

3. It depends on your contacts.

Thanks.

Thanks. I work with a Big 4 in its strategy division. Not much to do with Tech (can understand that the market would be better for tech, that’s the case everywhere). Although I do have an MBA from a top Indian institute i doubt a McK or BCG will hire me, so hedging my bets on tier 2 firms such as the Big 4/A&M/Acc or try for a corp. strategy role in a bank. Hoping for the best, but before that hoping to get the PR. :)

This is deliberate policy by Canadian Government , to keep immigrants away from jobs.
