Multan Sultans off to a solid start in HBL PSL - New HBL PSL team picks their first nine players

10 October, Lahore: Multan Sultans kick started their HBL Pakistan Super League campaign today with the announcement of their first nine picks in the expansion draft.

Multan Sultans went with the experience of all-rounders Shoaib Malik and Kieron Pollard in their Platinum picks.

Malik’s two-year association with Karachi Kings came to an end last week. The former Pakistani captain has amassed a total of 7,124 runs in 279 T20 matches and he will be keen to continue his stellar T20 form for Multan Sultans.

Sri Lankan stalwart Kumar Sangakkara will be a part of the Multan Sultans squad as a Player Mentor.

The Sultans opted for three left-arm pacers in Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad Irfan and Junaid Khan. Multan-born batsman Sohaib Maqsood will turn up for his home city in the third season of the HBL Pakistan Super League. He is joined by leg-spinner Irfan Khan and left-arm spinner Kashif Bhatti to make up Multan’s nine picks.

“Multan Sultans have gone for experience and a strong Pakistani core with this selection,” said Asher Schon, President Multan Sultans. “We would like to welcome the first nine Sultans on board and we can’t wait for the main draft to build on this selection.”

Shoaib Malik (Platinum)
Kieron Pollard (Platinum)
Kumar Sangakkara (Diamond & Mentor)
Sohail Tanvir (Diamond)
Mohammad Irfan (Gold, Ambassador)
Junaid Khan (Gold)
Sohaib Maqsood (Silver)
Kashif Bhatti (Silver)
Irfan Khan (Silver)

A bigger and better HBL Pakistan Super League returns to action in February 2018!

So KK gave away Sangakkara, Pollard and Malik to get Afridi?

This looks like 11

5.Maqsood
6.Pollard
7.* 3rd foreign player

Bowling looks good. 3 left arm seamers to be trained by the greatest left arm seamer of all times.

Should get Chris Lynn or Evin Lewis for the opening spot.

afridi in t20 will always be better for any team if he is to be compared with the above players

Nope. Sangakkara better captain and a better batsman. Plus you also gave up Pollard and Malik. That's the worst deal in the history of worst deals.

I really like the personalities in this list but then Tool Kit had to ruin it

He is a beast in leagues.

Sultan Warriors to lift PSL 3 cup! Mark my words! This is a very strong squad except for Junaid khan.

We will crush Karachi and show Lahore the door!

Multan Sultans Fan thread!

Key players have just been announced!

Shobby, Pollard, Sanga, Irfan, Tanvir, and Junaid.

Looks like a very strong squad, couple of league legends in Sanga, Shobby, Pollard and Tanvir. It already looks like the strongest squad in the competition and will roll over sides like Lahore and Karachi.

Anyone from Multan region? Although I am not affiliated with Multan, i just cannot help but love this team. :babar

Multan Sultans to win PSL 3 cup!

Though I'm a big LQ fan but I lived Multan 5 years and enjoyed the best schooling days in LaSalle high school. So this year I'll be rooting for both Multan and LQ.

I believe Multan should have picked Ahmed Shahzad, Watson or Luke Wright. But still its a decent squad.

What sort of encouragement is this - this guy Irfan was banned for fixing few months back, now a new franchise is making him ambassador!!!!

Bhaisaab, this is Pakistan Super League after all. We have people praying for Salman Butt to make a return. That should tell you what sort of encouragement we like to give out.

Banned for failing to report an approach, not for fixing. Dangerously close to defamation.

Beast in CPL only these days

Played purely on reputation last psl

bro atleast get their name right.

Average selection
Surprised they didn’t go with the more consistent PSL performers/proven performers in PSL, I.e. Ahmed Shehzad, Tamim Iqbal and Luke Wright.
Shoaib Maqsood Selection not an immediate first choice, but let’s see if he can prove us wrong.
This squad does seem like a Karachi Kings reject team, with 5 ex-KK players forming the basis of the team.

Regardless, best of luck to Multan Sultans and all teams for PSL3 #AbKhel6Ka

Junaid Khan bowling with Wasim Akram as the mentor, now this will be something to see :D

There is a huge difference between not reporting an approach and actually fixing. Not saying Irfan should be the brand ambassador but can't compare him to a fixer.

Below are the Sultans first 9 picks.

Shoaib Malik (Platinum)
Kieron Pollard (Platinum)
Kumar Sangakkara (Diamond & Mentor)
Sohail Tanvir (Diamond)
Mohammad Irfan (Gold, Ambassador)
Junaid Khan (Gold)
Sohaib Maqsood (Silver)
Kashif Bhatti (Silver)
Irfan Khan (Silver)

So they are bascially Karachi Kings from last year

I wasn't the one that called him a fixer nor did I endorse that post.

Junaid leaving Zalmi has made my day. He was a serial match-loser for us.

Hope someone equally as bad replaces him, can't stand Zalmis, although Islamabad is worse for not giving youngsters a chance, cough misbah cough

No one can be as bad for Zalmi as Junaid was. Anyone would be an improvement.

Ruman,Shadab,Amad, and Talat got a chance under Misbah.

You should look Karachi who selected Sanga,Mahela,Gayle,Sohail Khan, and Malik . That's 5 players over 30 and 4 over 34 who were playing in that line up. But Misbah doesn't give youngsters a chance :misbah

Try again

bro the simple fact that Ajmal played that many games for them when everyone knew he was finished, just shows Misbahs insistence of seniority, that culture destroyed our LOI team from 2010-2016, and for those reasons alone I will never support Islamabad United.

(I really like Raees and Shadab's bowling)

plenty of bowling options, need to get some good pakistani batsman in as well like Ssahibzada Farhan and get in another foreign batsman to open with him like Lynn, maybe could go for Fawad Alalm as well in the ,middle order or Mukhtar Ahmed

Yes he played some oldies but he gave youngsters a chance. Can't only blame Misbah for our LO struggles in those years.

Ohhhhhh
6 Teams Picks 54 Players
But Any One Not Pick PCB Hero No1?
If 6 Teams Not Pick Him Then Why Inzamam Pick Him Always For T20 Squad?
Who Are Mental?
Inzamam Or 6 Teams Owners?

Boring team.

Those kicked out be Karachi Kings have found their shelter here. Malik is well past his glory days of Sialkot Stallions.

There are a few disappointing selections here but people seem oblivious to the fact that for this pre-draft MS could only pick players from the ones that were released by the other franchises, so obviously there was a recycling of names.

Let's see how they do in the main draft and then comment.

Not sure why Junaid is getting so much hate. He was a major factor in the CT win and regularly plays in the Natwest T20 Blast.

He is good enough to play PSL.

If by that you are asking whether posts should be accurate, then yes I would say they should be.

But, making a banned player ambassador for the wrong reason still makes it look bad.

Surprising that Ahmed was released by QG and Multan didn't pick him - and he is a PAK starter; MoS for the last series as well. Probably negotiation issue - he wanted platinum, they didn't value more than diamond. Otherwise Ahmed over Tanvir everyday.

It's not unique.

Shakib was banned for six months for "serious misbehaviour" and yet is a poster boy of BCB.

Do I agree with it? No. But it isn't anything new or unique.

Had he actually committed the offence of fixing etc. then that would be more serious.

Nice try.

Shakib was banned for an on field misbehaviour, which was not only harsh, something ridiculous - it was a personal grudge of Mustafa Kamal, who had his revenge on Shakib for supporting opposite political party. What he did, if worth of ban, then half of cricket world would have been out of job.

Comparing that to a ban for not reporting fixing issue is probably good explanation of why PAK cricket is in such mess for this regard. At least keep perspective relevant. Shakib is poster boy for being the top all rounder in 3 formats for best part of a decade, not for his off field issues.

Ahmed Shehzad was in platinum and they have already selected Shoaib Malik and Keiron Pollard so Shehzad will have to wait for the draft. If he goes as platinum, diamond or gold and to which team is yet to be seen.

You cant disallow someone to play when the ban is completed and also you cant tell franchises to not appoint someone their ambassador. What do you expect the board to do?

PCB can't do anything, hence they are out of my initial post.

Brand ambassador is a marketing activity - franchises shouldn't indulge their brand with such characters just after return, if they sense a negative connotation, because then the primary objective is lost. But, they did & from the start I have noticed MS is quite professionally run - still they did. Which tells, that little scar in Irfan's career isn't a big issue in their Target Audience - that's the sad part of it.

Nothing PCB can do here and not their fault either. If BCB could manage mass audience of Bangladesh, Ashraful would have been playing in green & red again - that would have been both way sweet for BCB (they are not saints either), but their target audience are less generous.

anyone knows when is the PSL main draft? i heard the rumors that it is shifted to mid October from mid November due to GWL T20 but as now its being postponed so i'm wondering when is draft? in October or Nov?

Explain this argument.

You have a habit of burying your more controversial points. It's not a good trait.

I actually thought opposite - I dig in deep on "controversial points", so that the controversy is well discussed & documented. For example, you might have noticed - in recent times, there were 3 such controversial points - the "emerging quota" of PSL, the "Pay as you play" system in BPL & "which league PAK players will pick - BPL or Global T20". Instead, I actually made sure that, the topic isn't buried, so that posters can read the "controversy" later........ when mystery unfolds one by one.

The bold part is very easy to explain - Ashraful was 25/26!! then. By the numbers of Tamim or Shakib's earnings, I can roughly estimate that, he has lost at least about 23-25 crore earnings from remaining 12-13 years career - an amount, 25% of which was fat enough for every BCB lobby to "defuse" the situation and bring him back to "life" in 12 months time. It didn't happen, because those who fills BCB's coffers (the sponsors), would have never risked to irritate their target audience - mass market of Bangladesh.

Still they could have picked some youngsters like Irfan (fast bowler), Nauman Anwar, Saif Badar, Zafar Gohar etc :) there were many available.
I hope Malik becomes the captain and they will definitely pick few upcoming youngsters. Thats the thing i like about Malik the most.

Franchises are unlikely to select such players for the platinum/diamond category, but I agree that a few could have been selected in silver (and maybe even gold) category.

Yes, Malik is great at giving youngsters opportunities. I am so happy the rumours about Hafeez being made captain failed to materialise.

We didn't have any young batsmen in the team bro. We gave chances to Usama Mir and Usman Shenwari tho.

Very disappointing picks......They could have gone for Fahim Ashraf who is without a team in PSL

Ashraf was not eligible for this pre-draft.
