After losing out on the opportunity to secure ICC Cricket World Cup Super League points in ODIs against New Zealand, Bangladesh would aim to make amends by steamrolling their road to this year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Overview

New Zealand v Bangladesh, 1st T20I
Seddon Park, Hamilton
Sunday, 28 March, 2 pm local

The ODI series loss to New Zealand has given Bangladesh a lot to think about as they go into the T20I leg of the series with preparations for this year's T20 World Cup in mind. The Bangladesh batting order will look disparate this time around due to the unavailability of veterans, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan.

At the other end, New Zealand’s squad features young guns – Finn Allen and Will Young – rising from impeccable performances in the Super Smash, the country's domestic T20 competition, who are likely to be tested before finalizing New Zealand’s squad for the T20WC.

The hosts will participate in the series without the geniuses of Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Colin Munro, Tim Siefert, Trent Boult, Kyle Jamieson, Jimmy Neesham, and Mitchell Santner who have all been rested while Lockie Ferguson and Adam Milne return to the mix after injury woes.

Remember the last time

The last time both sides faced each other in the shortest format was when Bangladesh toured New Zealand in 2017. In that series, the visitors were wiped away with a comprehensive 3-0 defeat. Bangladesh were taken aback by strong batting displays from Williamson, Munro, and Corey Anderson, supported by Ferguson and Ish Sodhi in the bowling.

What they said

Devon Conway (New Zealand wicket-keeper batsman): “We reset. We go again. It is about to continue doing the small things well and taking care of the results as they happen throughout the series. It is about ticking the right boxes. We are not taking performances in each game for granted and doing what we can as a team unit.”

Tamim Iqbal (Bangladesh ODI Captain): “It is a different format. A lot of main New Zealand players are not playing but we have exciting talent. It is a different thing to have exciting talent but it's a different thing that you can be exciting and you can have talent but you also need to come and perform and I’m sure the team will do well I can wish them very well. The T20 world cup is also coming soon and these three T20s will be equally important”

New Zealand v/s Bangladesh 1st T20 International

NZ won the toss and elected to bat first.

Bangaldesh have made a good start.

NZ : 1/1 in 1 overs.

Could of had two 150km bowlers but NZ opt for pies from Hamish Bennett

Bangladesh 44/4 in 6 overs.. The Kiwis are very dominant at home.

Bangaldesh end up at 144/8 in 30 overs.. NZ win by 66 runs.

NZ 210/3 (20)BAN 144/8 (20)

New Zealand won by 66 runs

PLAYER OF THE MATCH

Devon Conway

Devon Conway's stunning 92* followed by Ish Sodhi's 4/28 helped New Zealand to a comprehensive 66-run win in the opening T20I against Bangladesh in Hamilton.

Tim Southee, who was leading the side in Kane Williamson's absence won the toss and opted to bat first – a decision that was proven right by a spectacular batting performance from the hosts.

It was not the ideal start though as Bangladesh debutant Nasal Ahmed removed Finn Allen for a duck in the first over. However, Conway came in to bat with purpose and took his time to settle. Even after losing Martin Guptill on a 27-ball 35, Conway remained unfazed.

He paired with Will Young to first bring up the fifty partnership and let loose soon after. Both Conway and Young brought up their half-centuries. The 105-run stand was eventually broken when Mahadi Hasan dismissed Young for 53 (30).

Conway then began plundering runs. 48 came in the last three overs. He finished on an unbeaten 92 off just 52 balls, slamming 11 fours and three sixes in the innings as the hosts put up a daunting 210/3 on the board.

In reply, Bangladesh began confidently with opener Mohammad Naim hitting three fours in the first two overs. But Southee removed Liton Das in the third over to break that fledgling stand. Naim's stay at the crease also ended two overs later as he fell victim to Lockie Ferguson for 27.

Before Bangladesh could recover, Sodhi struck with a double-wicket over, dismissing Soumya Sarkar (5) and Mohammad Mithun (4) in the sixth over leaving Bangladesh struggling on 44/4 at the end of the Powerplay.

Sodhi struck again two overs later, removing two more – bowling out Mahmudullah for 11 and then Mahedi Hasan for a duck on the very next delivery.

Afif Hossain was the only Bangladesh batsman to offer any resistance but he too fell five runs short of a fifty.

With tight lines and lengths, the New Zealand bowlers controlled the scoring rate and there was nothing much that Bangladesh tail could do.

They eventually fell 66 runs short, finishing their innings on 144/8.

What a failed performance from BD..Sarkar and mithun are decent bats.

Must be painful being a BD fan. Yet to have a team which can consistently compete in world cricket, and whenever a decent player does come along they tend to second their national duty.

Devon Conway has had an impressive start to international cricket, surprised there has not been much hype about him so far. Looks like someone who can play all 3 formats.

Another poor performance from BD.

This has been a joke of a tour.
Embarrassing to be honest. Gloomy cricket future ahead I'm afraid as i don't think there are many international level players in the pipeline and the seniors are becoming burdens.

Why aren't Bangladesh getting their U-19 boys into the national side? Their U-19 bowlers looked like much better prospects than most of their senior men's team pacers
