The omission of George Worker from the latest New Zealand ODI squad is good news for the looming goal of Cricket World Cup success.

Worker has given way at the top of the order to Martin Guptill, who missed the ODI series against the West Indies due to a hamstring injury, but returned for the first T20 on December 29.

Guptill has been included in the 13-man squad for the opening two matches of the five-match series, which starts at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on Saturday.

George Worker made a good fist of his opportunities in the recent ODI series against the West Indies.

That's harsh on Worker, who top-scored for New Zealand in the first of three one-day victories against the hapless West Indies.

The left-hander, employed in his favourite batting position as opener, made half-centuries in Whangarei and Christchurch before missing out in the last encounter. Back to domestic cricket on Saturday, he then blasted 75 off 38 balls to the short boundaries of Pukekura Park in a Super Smash outing for the Central Stags in a loss to the Knights.

Also a useful part-time spin bowling option, Worker has shown selector Gavin Larsen he'll remain in the mix as a strong squad continues to be moulded towards the 2019 World Cup competition.

Guptill, of course, was an automatic selection when fit again from a hamstring strain.

"Martin is a proven world class player, so we're naturally thrilled to have him back in the mix. He and Colin have been strong for us at the top of the order," Larsen said.

"It's tough on George missing out, but he'll continue to push for selection and will get further opportunities down the road."

The other feature of the squad was the selection of two spinners in all-rounders Todd Astle and Mitchell Santner.

Larsen said having both gave the team options.

"Todd made the most of his opportunity against the West Indies and made a strong contribution with both bat and ball.

"Mitchell has been one of our most consistent white ball bowlers for a long time now, as can be seen by him being ranked in the top 10 ODI bowlers in the world.

"Conditions will dictate whether they play in the same XI, but it's certainly not out of the question."

Colin de Grandhomme was unavailable having only just returned to New Zealand after the sudden death of his father, but he will return to play for Auckland on January 7.

NZ is clear favorite considering we have Hafeez without his bowling, Tuk tuk Azhar, absence of Sharjeel, out of form Fakhar and team full of accumulators.

Pakistan need to get rid of hafeez and Azhar to make a good team for next WC. Malik , Harris and Baabar are accumulators , no more required.

Decent team from NZ. Guptil, Williamson and Taylor will be the key. Ross Taylor has been in sublime form recently.

Think a lot of them would have not seen some of the Pak bowlers before so good contest in the offing

Bracewell ruled out of first two Pakistan ODIs | Worker called in

BLACKCAPS all-rounder Doug Bracewell will miss the first two games of the upcoming GJ Gardner Homes ODI series against Pakistan, after straining his right hamstring in last night’s final T20 International against West Indies at Bay Oval.

Bracewell suffered the injury while fielding and will undergo further medical assessment in the coming days to determine his recovery.

Coach Mike Hesson said it was disappointing to be losing Bracewell after such a promising return to international cricket.

“Doug’s worked really hard to make it back into the side after a pretty serious injury last year and he’s impressed in the opportunities he’s had.

“We know he’s a hard trainer and back him to rehab well and be available for selection in the not too distant future.”

Central Stags teammate George Worker will replace Bracewell in the 13-man squad, which has been named for the first two matches of the five-game series.

Worker will play for the Stags in today’s Burger King Super Smash game against the Auckland Aces, before joining the BLACKCAPS in Wellington for training on Friday.

All-rounder Colin de Grandhomme is set to return for the Aces on January 7th and 10th and Hesson was hopeful he may be available later in the Pakistan ODI series.

The BLACKCAPS begin their five-game ODI series against Pakistan at the Basin Reserve on Saturday.

No superstar syndrome or anything like that for the Black Caps. A good, honest bunch of boys doing the simple things well. Good to watch as well.

Colin De Grandhomme back in ODI squad

BLACKCAPS allrounder Colin de Grandhomme will rejoin the ODI squad ahead of the third match of the GJ Gardner Homes Series against Pakistan.

De Grandhomme missed the limited overs series against West Indies due to the death of his father in Zimbabwe.

George Worker drops out of what is an otherwise unchanged squad from the first two ODIs against Pakistan.

BLACKCAPS Selector Gavin Larsen said everyone was looking forward to seeing De Grandhomme back in the side.

“It’s been a difficult time for Colin and I know the group are excited to catch up with him. Everyone has been thinking of him while he’s been away,” said Larsen.

“Colin has been effective for us with bat and ball and provides another allrounder option.

“He’ll play for Auckland on Wednesday and, all going well, will join the team in Dunedin on Thursday.”

The BLACKCAPS play Pakistan in the third ODI in Dunedin on Saturday, before heading to Hamilton and Wellington to finish the series.
