Two potential debutants in BLACKCAPS for ANZ Test series

The BLACKCAPS squad for the ANZ Test series against Pakistan features uncapped Auckland players Jeet Raval and Colin de Grandhomme, while Canterbury’s Todd Astle has earned a recall.

The squad assembles in Christchurch on Monday, with the two match Test series beginning three days later.

BLACKCAPS Test Squad

Kane Williamson (c)
Todd Astle
Trent Boult
Colin de Grandhomme
Matt Henry
Tom Latham
Henry Nicholls
Jimmy Neesham
Jeet Raval
Tim Southee
Ross Taylor
Neil Wagner
BJ Watling

Doug Bracewell, Martin Guptill, Jeetan Patel, Luke Ronchi and Ish Sodhi are the five players from the recent tour of india to drop out of the squad.

Astle returns having played one Test in 2012 against Sri Lanka, while also appearing in two Twenty20s last summer against Pakistan.

De Grandhomme is yet to play a Test, but played in both short formats in 2012, while Raval toured with the Test team to Zimbabwe and South Africa, but is yet to feature for the BLACKCAPS in any format.

Larsen said Astle and de Grandhomme’s performances spoke for themselves.

“Todd’s been incredibly consistent at the domestic level, having been one of the top four wicket takers in the Plunket Shield for the past threes seasons,” said Larsen.

“His bowling has continued to improve and he’s also shown impressive form with the bat, so Todd provides a similar skill set to Mitchell Santner in his absence.

“Since Colin returned from injury last season, he’s made a number of key contributions with bat and ball. He’s made an impressive start to the current Plunket Shield season and he provides us with another strong allrounder option."

Larsen admitted there had been a number of difficult decisions that had to be made.

“There were a number of tough calls and when naming a squad of 13 it’s a challenge to make sure we get the balance right.

“Jeet has been in the picture for a while now and he benefitted from spending time in the environment during the tour of Africa. His form in recent seasons has been excellent and the opportunity for Jeet to begin his international career in familiar conditions will be important.

“Luke, Martin, Doug miss out this series, but we know that they and the others who miss out will continue to work hard on their game and get the chance to continue staking a claim in the domestic competition.”

Six players were not considered due to injury, those being Mitchell Santner, Mark Craig, Adam Milne, Mitchell McClenaghan, Colin Munro, and George Worker. Corey Anderson was also not in contention, as he continues to work on building up his bowling work load.

*Todd Astle and Colin de Grandhomme come out of the NZ A squad to face Pakistan in Nelson beginning tomorrow, with Kyle Jamieson and Luke Woodcock to be their replacements

Guptill finally dropped.

Surprised Ronchi was left out despite showing to be a handy number 5.

I thought he would be a lock, he might be paying for his failings in LOI's. He's had a pretty solid start to his Test career.

Todd Astle? Any relationship with Nathan Astle?

Nicholls and Wagner will bowl extremely well against Pakistan - Nicholls will be the one bowler we let shine this series.

Still have Nicolls there.

Yeah the guy who played hero when we had you guys on the ropes at 86/4 in that game earlier this year. Scored an 86 and crushed our hopes and dreams.

We have a habit of making legends out of nobodies.

No superstars of big name players. A group of honest and hard working men giving their best. Kane Williamson stands out as being their most talented batsman. A very good fielding side, pity we're not playing any one days with them.

Never knew nicholls bowls. I hope he bowls against us to give us some easy runs.

Nothing really to shout home about this NZ squad - 3-4 players who are probably very good and in the case of Williamson world class but the rest are not really up to standard.

Hopefully the pitch conditions aren't such that winning the toss means you win the match like in Asia because that reduces the element of competition in the game considerably which is disappointing for the fans.

Any info on who Colin de Grandhomme is??

Looks like a weak squad to be honest, they might as well make green pitches because the only good part of this squad is the fast bowling. Will be fun series!

No relation.

Nicholls isnt a bowler, I assume you mean Neesham?

Alrounder, been around the domestic game for 10 years or so. Has played a couple of T20's for NZ I think.

Hard toiler, and probably there only as a backup to Neesham because Coriander Son is injured

The team will be:

1 Tom Latham
2 Jeet Raval - another left-hander
3 Kane Williamson (c)
4 Ross Taylor
5 Henry Nicholls
6 Jimmy Neesham
7 BJ Watling
8 Todd Astle - leg-spinning all-rounder
9 Tim Southee RFM
10 Trent Boult LFM
11 Neil Wagner LMF

Last 14 Test innings for Taylor have produced 250 @ 17.85!

Just looking at the Pakistan squad...
Still going with Nawaz... and then Sharjeel/Rizwan too?

So disappointed to not see Guptil's name in there. A world-class walking wicket and would have been at the top of his game in this series, giving his wicket away in record time in every innings.

He's due for a big one then :)

which we will ensure it comes without any problems what so ever !!!!!

Jason Holder couldn't take a wicket to save his life and we ended up giving him a 5fer on a freaking Sharjah wicket

I won't be surprised if Taylor breaks some blackcap records along the way in this short series.

Rightly dropped to concentrate on ODI's. 8th ranked ODI batsman in the world by the way (no Pakistanis in the top 10)

A hack is a hack in any format. He just gets to bat in a much easier environment in ODIs and his quick 30s and 40s are actually useful there. If we're making a top ten ODI batters list based on quality, Guptil wouldn't make it. Neither would any Pakistani but that is beside the point.

Top runscorer in the world cup last year. A massive factor in us making the final. ;)

Agree he wouldn't make a subjective list :) I was just being facetious really, looks like it worked.

Like I said, in easier conditions a hack like Guptil, like all the other hacks out there, can be pretty successful. The last WC was hardly difficult for batsmen.

Oh I finally get you. You think he is a hack :) glad we cleared that up.

Zimbabwe player settled in NZ.NZ the new home of SA and Zimbabwe players

Pakistan batting needs to perform regardless of who NZ are playing but Guptill would have been a handful

I thought Ronchi batted quite well in India and we struggle sometimes against batsmen who bat at a good tempo, so good to see him out of the squad.

Would have liked if Guptill was there but alas.

Good to see Raval finally picked. I think, Popli should have been picked as well, over Grandhomme, who is another medium pace all-rounder - Popli is a genuine top order & a sort of specialist for longer game. I think, playing XI will be

Jeet Raval, Tom Latham
Kane Williamson (c), Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, Jimmy Neesham
BJ Watling+
Matt Henry, Tim Southee Neil Wagner, Trent Boult

Don't think Astle is going to do any harm with his leggi to PAK line-up, therefore going with 4 pacers is better idea. I would have definitely picked Popli & played him at 4, dropping Ross one slot below - one of Neesham or Nicholls to make way for him. Also, should have picked one left-arm spinner, but I guess next one in line after Santner is probably not even Astle's level.

Hope the wicket doesn't spoil the party. Oblate, Kiwi Test wickets had been flat, where Mac forced result by scoring 450 at around 5/over & always going for wickets at the cost of runs, making effectively a 6 day Test. If it's a flat deck, both Misbah & Kane will settle for 550 in 170 overs first & then wait for opponents to collapse.

Off topic but didnt want to make a separate thread. Does any one know who is broadcasting this test series in the US? I don't see it under willows future fixtures list, nothing under ESPN upcoming events either.

India-born player Jeet Raval hopes to play his debut Test for NZ against Pakistan

http://www.observerbd.com/details.php?id=43024

Jeet Raval may be one of the very few India-born cricketers to play his debut Test against Pakistan from the third country. India-born Ish Sodhi (New Zealand), Colin Cowdrey and Nasser Hussain (England) have played against Pakistan but not in their very first Test match. The 29-year old left-handed opening batsman and the leg break bowler has been included in the New Zealand team for the two-Test series commencing in Christchurch from November 17.

"May be Jeet will be the first India-born left hand opener playing for New Zealand against Pakistan", his father Ashok Raval, speaking exclusively over his mobile from Auckland, said. "We wish Jeet will make India and Gujarat proud as he is scheduled to begin his international career against Pakistan".

Jeet was earlier selected for the tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe but the tour management decided to extend Guptill career and therefore Jeet could not make it to the final eleven.

"Jeet has got the opportunity to begin his international career in familiar conditions. He has a chance to prove himself as an opener against the world class Pakistani bowlers. The Pak team has got good seamers and spinners", the senior Raval added.

"Jeet is playing for Blackcaps New Zealand cricket team and the Kiwis are always best in behavior and sportsman spirit. Jeet also plays in the same spirit", the dad added. "His form in recent seasons / years has been excellent and I am sure he will play in the same passion at international level also".

India-born Gujju player Jeet Raval played for Gujarat Under 14 and Under 16 teams and now plays for Auckland Aces. The family migrated to New Zealand when Jeet was sixteen.
