I see. I agree that they will likely do a similar job but MA is more potent with the ball and gets it to nibble from a wonderful line and length. And he his metronomic consistency also outshines that of FA. So far I think we have not had much reason to regret his selection as a bowler. Let's see how the Test pans out.

Have to relook if he is really a strike bowler. Same situation in the England tour. No potency after the first spell.

If and its a big if...Naseem can bowl like that last over he will be a handful. I just hope he can get his radar right. Why is he so low on speed???

It seems like our players think they are on top right now.

I think they need not be complacent. Think they have a level head leading them today who is a decent mix of vigour and pragmatism.

But also no reason to think they have fallen behind. Wickets usually come in bunches. If they get one, they may get another. If we add c. 30 runs to it and 2 more wickets, does not look too bad.

Would say first hour after lunch will be crucial. If Naseem does not lose his "rhythm" and can back up the effort of other bowlers, it should be good.

Good session overall. Shaheen was outstanding, Abbas and Faheem kept things tight, Yasir looked good, and Naseem bounced back after a terrible start. I'd get Shaheen in right away to start the second session.

Yes. Both Shaheen and Abbas should start the session

Coming from an injury and just one competitive match for Shaheens since then. Also he is still trying to adjust a few things in his bowling.

This pak bowling attack is bang average. Can't belive Yasir shah is still being selected for pak

Naseem is also another very very overrated bowler. No movement at medium to fast pace. He is literally a bowling machine

How tall is umesh yadav ...just realised he has similar runup to naseem but bowling regularly at 143kph

Its an even session. Nzl are not out of it yet. If Pak can break through this partnership they can run NZL over. Pak need to be more disciplined in the field and must come little closer as the ball is not carrying.

Does anyone know Kane has soft hands? Don't think it's been mentioned yet.

He is 33 year old pacer who has a lot of experience and understands how to manage his body and different sessions of test cricket.

Even Shaheen is still learning that till now after two years in international cricket let alone Naseem who was brought into national team after almost half season of 4 day cricket in his teenage.

I have a feeling Yasir will get Taylor as Taylor want to go after him and eventually he will do something stupid.

I don't wish to slate the young Naseem but feel that continually playing him is wasting precious resources. I get he is a pet project of Waqar/Misbah but its time to shelve this experiment.

3 wickets would be paks session and 2 is even but low run rate makes it pak slightly ahead. Next hour is key. I would attack and get best bowlers on (Shaheen and Abbas) for an hour. 6 overs for Shaheen and 8 on trot for Abbas

Shelve it like Dave Fincher has had to do with Mindhunter Season 3

Don't think Faheem should be at 7. If you want to play him, play him as a 3rd seamer. Though tbh, looks like we have no other batsmen in the squad except Imran Butt, and it would a young batsman debuting is probably not going to strengthen our batting line up anyway, so I get bolstering our batting line up instead. Think it would have been bad decision if Babar was fit, I'd just include another batsman.

We're doing alright so far, I don't think 55 for 2 is bad at all, one more wicket down and think NZ will be in big trouble.

Disagree

Pak have kept things very tight besides Naseem’s pressure release overs.

The second session is key.

You are free to do that but when you bowl first to justify the decision you need to pick up atleast 3 wickets in first session

I dont want to be too harsh on the lad as he is really young and has actually done v well in his short career but due to his height they shouldnt have shortened his run.up and dont forget he is the only one who got williamson edge was a hard catch

Should have been 3 or 4 down as Shaheen was bowling like a superstar, but other bowlers could not do much. Abbas needs to operate around 135kph to be more effective. Faheem and Yasir looked ok. Nassem is too young to play at this level ;)

He shortened his run up? That is crazy!

A lot of Pakistani sponsors for the test. Even the main sponsor is PSO

Dude Umesh is built like an animal. He is too good in Asia but he is pretty average outside Asia.

Can't compare Umesh who is built like a tank to a pipsqueak like Naseem.

Sameen Gul now that's a big strong solid boy. Please play him in the next test.

Pakistan team is a parody of itself. They are so predictable in letting the game slip away from themselves after a good start.

I'm just so worried about Boult, Southee and Wagner (maybe Jamieson too) helping us beat India's record...

Taylor itching to slog sweep Abbas to the top of the mountain

Typical NZ.

Some movement in the first hour and then good for batting on day 1. WI also suffered the same fate.

Good for Pakistan they won the toss and will have gotten the best of the conditions. Often we're the ones who face the worst of conditions after losing the toss.

Shaheen needs to develop his outswinger. He needs it. Pakistan needs it. I need it. You need it.

Boy do I love Kane's technique. If it was up to me the ideal batsman would some hybrid of MoYo and KW for swinging wickets.

Contact point under one's nose, straight bat, soft hands. Silken touch and backlift of MoYo. Kane's beard.

Taylor always looks like he's almost about to fall over and just shunts his bat down at an angle to bump Abbas' balls into the ground.

Amazing economy rate by Abbas. If bowlers, 3, 4 and 5 can continue this PAK will have done an honest days work.

So far...

Kane alone has faced 15 of the 32 overs. The other 3 have faced 17

Pakistan are better off bowling spells to the other bats, who are prone to make more mistakes unlike Taylor who is just sucking up all of their efforts and energy to no avail.

SSA should prefer Ross Taylor. Hope he can get him.

Time running out for Rizwan to come up to the stumps for Abbas.

70/2 after 33 overs.

This partnership can take the game away. Pakistan need a breakthrough.

PAK is losing plot here - if kiwis post 350 here, game is over.

Not sure if anyone has noticed the excessive laughter by all our fielders. What's so funny? Since lunch all I've seen is toothless one dimensional bowling.

Agreed. This is the day to cash in on wickets- if we were batting 5/6 wickets down would be down by now.
