12th Player of the Match award for Suryakumar Yadav in 51 T20Is - joint second most for India along with Rohit Sharma, only behind Virat Kohli's 15. Since Surya's T20I debut no other player have won more than nine Player of the Match awards.

India batter Suryakumar Yadav who has been selected as part of India's World Cup squad has not been able to replicate his prolific T20I format in ODI cricket. Yadav, who himself accepted that he is yet to crack the code in ODI cricket has been included on the basis of the potential that the batter possesses.

Suryakumar made his ODI debut on July 18, 2021, playing against Sri Lanka. He marked his arrival on the international stage by scoring his maiden ODI fifty just three days later, on July 21, 2021. Despite his promising start, Yadav's performance in the 50-over format has been underwhelming. In his 26-match ODI career, he has managed to accumulate only 511 runs.

Yadav's recent performances in ODIs have been a mixed bag. His scores against the West Indies included 19, 24, and 35. However, he had a disappointing series against Australia where he failed to score a single run. This dip in form led to discussions within the Indian team management about utilising Yadav as a finisher in the ODI side, particularly at the No.6 spot. The idea was to leverage his high-risk approach and ability to get going from the first ball, traits that have served him well in the T20 format.

Yadav while speaking during the ODI series vs West Indies had said that he has been given a specific role by the Indian team. Yadav said that he was expected to come out in the last 15 overs and use his aggressive batting style to provide a strong finish to the Indian side.

Suryakumar Yadav has won the ICC Men’s T20I Cricket of the Year award for the second year in a row.

With his eclectic mix of shots, Suryakumar dominated 2023 with an average that closed in on 50 and a strike rate exceeding 150. The backbone of India’s middle order got starts throughout the year, delivering several match-winning contributions. This is the second consecutive year that the India batter has taken this award home.

T20I record in 2023: 17 innings, 733 runs at 48.86, Strike Rate 155.95

Looking to go back-to-back after winning the accolade in 2022, Suryakumar Yadav did not fall foul to second-year syndrome, dominating again in the shortest format.

Yadav’s first innings of just seven to start the year against Sri Lanka was a mere speed bump in another prolific year, making scores of 51 (36) and 112* (51) in the next two matches. Consistent scoring in 20s to 40s continued, before an innings of 83 (44) against the West Indies in Providence proved his class. He ended the series against the West Indies with a knock of 61 (45) in Florida.

Yadav flourished despite the burden of captaincy, taking the reins of a young side towards the end of the year.

Suryakumar made half-centuries against Australia (80 off 42 balls) and South Africa (56 from 36 balls), before posting an even 100 against the Proteas off just 56 balls in their final T20I of the year in Johannesburg.

Memorable performance

With a range of his inside-out drives and clever play behind the wicket, Suryakumar’s knock of 112 off 51 balls against Sri Lanka in January included nine sixes and seven fours, equating to almost a boundary every three deliveries.

His first boundary came off just the fourth ball of his innings, and it took just 45 balls to reach three figures.

The effort was the second-fastest hundred for India in men’s T20Is behind Rohit Sharma’s 35-ball effort against the same opponent in 2017, and India were clear 91-run winners.

Thank you Sky for bringing legitimacy back to the number 1 rankings in T20

Cricket was dying, especially with fraud+selfish players holding their country hostage due to ranking 1 and 2

But Sky you have shown what it truly means to be number 1

This guy deserves his no.1 ranking and all the ICC awards he’s recieved.

Pure Accumulators like Babar and Rizwan shouldn’t be anywhere near the top of the rankings.

Can't agree more!
The ICC rankings are a joke. Which brilliant mathematician have they hired for this work. Is he a fake professor like Hafeez?
