No oil, gas reserves found at Kekra-1: Petroleum Division [Update Post #237]

Exxonmobil has probably already given its report to cia and mossad and they might be planning ways to create hindrance and prevent pakistan from reaping the benefits

We developed our nuclear program, we can develop drilling capability as well but it will take time. Aren't there any Russian or Chinese drilling companies that we can use ?

Thats a good question and i think imran khan is smart enough to know the risks of hiring western drilling companies and will probably prevent them from hiring

Actually you missed the point. Pakistan atm does not have the resources and expertise to drill and refine a deep sea discovery. It will more or less be done in collaboration with a foreign player. This is where the terms of the sale come into the picture. What is the cost of the extraction and refinement? And whether it will be done wholly in Pakistan using local labour. Case in point, most of the Saudi oil is refined outside the country

Cost of extraction and refinement should be covered and even after that we should earn some.

Lolz I feel like that guy who is counting chickens and he still got eggs in his hands :yk

If Pak can develop nuclear weapons, jets etc. then I'm sure we can drill and extract the oil. We are nothing like Arabs. Pakistanis sweat when they got to ;)

We already are a nuclear power with the most professional armed forces and air force in the world. We are no venezuela or congo and not body can dictate us on our internal issues whether it is USA or any other western power.

Both are major issues but the problem in Pakistan unlike India is that the funds meant for development, the loans meant for development projects are siphoned into off shore bank accounts via money laundering. Those saying corruption is not a major issue in Pakistan is ignorant.

I did not say that it is not a major issue. I said it is not the most important issue. Corruption is not stopping foreign investment from coming to Pakistan, terrorism is.

95% terrorism is eradicated from pakistan.

When that happens, you will not need to state it explicitly. More airlines will resume their services to Pakistan, most cricket teams will be willing to travel to Pakistan without getting president level security, and you will see more international corporations operating in Pakistan.

And that is now starting to happen .

And it may take another 10 years so I will refrain from making these claims until Pakistan is a safe country becomes obvious.

Statistically, you'd be stupid to claim Pakistan still is not safe. But perception takes time to change when reality has changed. BA is already resuming flights and other airlines are in discussion. Cricket is slowly coming back. But again, you seem to be of binary completely safe and completely unsafe mindset.

lol stats.

please live in the country to know....

Pakistan's safety relies on basic implementation of Law and order.

If Law and Order is maintained, the country is safe..

Problem is our police force is a joke. They have no idea how to maintain law and order.

There is a belief in Pakistan, that you cant get away with anything here. Unless and until that belief changes we cannot call ourselves a safe country

You mean I have imaginary relatives living in Pakistan?

again, dont rely on relatives, see the results for yourself.

People are always biased. I remember when People told me that how KPK and PEshawar in particular was all clean, that was until i go to that city and see the canals filled up with garbage.

Just last week Abdul Aziz gives a lecture to people bashing the govt and its institutes, and he is just one lecture away from instigating for Jihad.

Pakistan is not safe just because an attack hasn't taken place. There are terrorist sleeper cells that exist in this country. There are mullahs who could instigate for a civil jihad anytime.

Pakistan would be a safe country when basic law and order is implemented.

Law and order is still not implemented in Pakistan

We developed our nuclear program, we can develop drilling capability as well but it will take time. Aren't there any Russian or Chinese drilling companies that we can use ?

it depends upon the govt.

We developed nuclear program along with uranium program due to the Bhutto govt.

You are right it will take time, and political parties refrain from long term projects, because they are always in fear that the credit would be taken by the other party that would be in govt after next 4 or 5 years.

I wonder if our local billionaires would want to invest in drilling companies or not. Problem is they are always having corruption cases being opened up agianst them all the time.

For example, Malik RIaz has got the money, but would he be willing to invest in drilling projects

I know that you are a Bhutto fan and he deserves the credit for our nuclear program but if you are implying that PTI won't start long term projects because someone else will take credit than you are wrong.
Billion tree project is just one example of Imran Khan's long term thinking. PTI will win next elections with bigger margin so that is not a worry anyways.;-)

Funding is not a big issue. We will have enough funds if we can stop big looters like Malik Riaz, Sharifs and Zaradaris from money looting and laundering.:19:

You are constantly contemplating the worst case scenario. Yes, if everything that can possibly go wrong, does indeed go wrong, we will have a problem on our hands.

I did not say that it is not a major issue. I said it is not the most important issue. Corruption is not stopping foreign investment from coming to Pakistan, terrorism is.

Foreign investors do not invest in countries with weak institutions and Pakistan's institutions are weak because of massive corruption that is embedded in almost every level of our society.

well lets see then, but based on what has happened till now, i doubt they would will win. Inflation has increased, products on which we were getting subsidized rates(GAS) are now being sold without subsidy and are quite expensive.

Prices have increased by a big margin, each and every good has been affected. Even medicines rates have doubled.

If the basic needs keep rising in Price, awaam will vote this party out.
They could later on campaigne all they want that last govt did this and that, that is not going to matter.

nope.

Corruption is there in India aswell, and its at massive rates there. But alot of foreign companies are investing in that country.

Pakistan's problem is terrorism and political instability. When lunatics like TLP block roads, this affects alot of people. When govts keep on changing, this also affects the performances of the company as every govt brings in his own new policies.

Then there are other problems aswell. Army brats get 10% discount from stores that are located in cantonment areas. That is enforced. Now, thats the kind of crap that local companies have to deal with, but would Foreign companies being willing to deal with such crap?

I think things will be under control in 2-3 years time. Imran has mentally prepared this nation for initial hardship and people are willing to give him time.
People will not have the choice to vote them out anyways unless a new party emerges which is unlikely. Sharifs and Bhuttos/Zardaris will never come back, because IK cannot do worse than them.

bro, all i advocate is simple implementation of Law and order.

Trust me, if law and order is maintained in the country, most of our problems finish with that.

If a country cant even maintain law and order, how the hell could one say its a safe country?

lol how are we mentally prepared? are we going into war?

Bhai, he has these 4 years now, and if he ends up winning senate aswell, then there would be no excuse for him left. Because thats when he could get all the bills and policies passed.

Bhai, for IK not to do worst, he has to bring in policies to curtail inflation. A guy from the lower class or middle class doesn't care about British Airways operating in Pakistan if he cant afford medicine or roti becomes more expensive.

Also it is very naive to say that PPP or PMLN won't come back. PPP is in survival mode and will probably campaign for the 2026 elections. But they are still 2nd in senate while PMLN is 1st.

India's police system is far better than ours and they did not had to contend with an unstable state like Afghanistan at its western border. India's railways, airlines and other institutions are way less corrupt than ours. There was lawlessness in Pakistan(and still is to an extent) due to corrupt police force.

Its not the companies who pay for the 10% discounts but the army run stores do it.

Roti's rate today was 7 rupees and it was the same under previous government. This government has tried its best to protect lower middle class and poor from inflation and inshAllah things will improve in coming years.

na, my friend is forced to give 10% discount to army wives. If he doesn't do that, they could forcefully close down his shop.

While at the same time, this kind of discount isn't charged by Mcdonalds who also operate in cant.

We blame corruption for everything, because its an easier term to use. We do not see the realities.

In Pindi, traffic violations take place no because of corruption, but because no traffic warden has ever implemented the law.

In Pindi, i have never been fined for parking at a no parking zone, i have never been fined for placing my car on the zebra crossing, i have never see anyone get finned for cutting lanes, i have never seen anyone get fined for there break lights not working.

If i dont get fined, then obviously, im not going to change my behavior just our of goodwill.

I was fined for fancy number plate and i got them immediately changed.

Problem is, our law enforces themselves dont know about the laws and are poorly trained. Army then has its differences aswell. When TLP was out there during PMLNs govt, Army didn't intervene, but when same thing started to happen during PTIs govt, ARmy effectively cleared the roads.

There is that political instability there that won't allow this country to be run

Medicines price have gone up.

And as for roti, there are rumours that by the next budget gas prices will rise, that will result in rotis price going up

Your angle is always to blame IK, you can't bring yourself to accept that NS and AZ are the ones that created a terrible mess which had bankrupted PK . It's easy to destroy and but incredibly difficult and time consuming to build. You can't even bring yourself to comment on quite literally billions that the PPP have stolen and Billos Rona dona. I find your posts disingenuois and dishonest

again the usual blame the last govt. Once you get the govt that doesn't work no more.

AZ did not cause the medicine rates to go up. NZ did not cause gas rates to go up..

When PPP came into govt, they also said the same thing about Army that they had bankrupted the country. But by the end, atleast PPP had bought in policies to reduce the inflation rate.

PTI isn't in opposition no more, you cant keep on using the same excuse for everything.

and as for the dishonest part, atleast i voted and still living under the new govt.

So you understanding of cause and affect is bad as your morals for supporting crooks. AZ and NS borrowed so much that the debts have tripled( when the PPP came to power it was only $37bn), that debt has to be financed by IK and the PTI. From your posts you don't want to know but the short answer is that this left the country bankrupt and with a BOP crisis which led to devaluation and this has led to higher prices. To answer your point their theft has directly led to higher prices.

Ps
Why beat about the bush explain why this PPP is full of crooks and who were these flooda walas that ended up with billions in their accounts?

Wish we wernt 20 years late.

I'm glad this discovery is in Imran's era, had Benazir, Nawaz or Zardari been at the helm then they would have bought all of London's affluent flats and the aam admi wouldn't have seen a single dollar of this precious natural resource.

Asia’s largest oil and gas reserves have been found in Karachi’s offshore waters, Prime Minister Imran Khan announced on Monday.

In a talk with journalists, the premier urged the nation to pray for the success of the exploration efforts and said the development could bring about a massive change in Pakistan’s fortunes.

PM Imran further told the journalists that it was possible that India could sponsor a terrorist attack in Pakistan before the start of its general elections next month. “We cannot let our guard down. We have to remain alert,” said the premier.

Speaking on other regional matters, Imran confirmed that the Afghan Taliban wanted to hold a meeting with him in Islamabad. “The government of Afghanistan was opposed to the meeting which is why decided against it.”

Asia's largest oil, gas reserves may soon be found near Karachi: PM

Tribune changed headline

Are they talking about SHALE (https://tribune.com.pk/story/994883...an-has-10159-tcf-of-shale-gas-deposits-usaid/) Or this is something different?

SHALE has its own ENV baggage and TECH barrier. Also, recoverable assets are very different than what people quote in raw numbers...BTW: SHALE data is nothing new, we knew about that for better part of this decade...

What is the source and numbers(quantity of GAS and OIL)? - Can somebody quote, maybe I am missing the real the beef?

There are literally two lines on this...I have not seen this news in any non-Pakistani source. Looks like we have to wait for few weeks to get some sort of picture, there is no detail at this point...

Perhaps, but the oil price wont ever go up, cause current supply is at an all time high, only maintained by the US sanctions on Iran, and the collapse of Libya.

Ever since news of this potential discovery emerged, I’ve had to seriously reconsider my support for greener energy sources.

Not surprised about this behaviour from a PPP supporter, consistently doing wrong so long as you get away with it.

To be honest its nothing to do with which political party you support. Even in more civilised countries like UK, you remove cameras from the roads and as soon as people find out they can get away with it, there will be more speeding or parking offences.

I think we know which nation gets the most defensive when something negative is said about them, true or not. But regardless, as usual, you posted nothing of substance.

Bigwig terrorists like Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar getting off ISI’s payroll and sentenced to 35+ years of jail is the only good news the country needs.

This is what I mean. Pakistan find the largest oil reserves in Asia, which can only be deemed beneficial to Pakistan given the current financial challenges, and you go off on a tangent talking about terrorism and how corruption is not the problem.

Oil is the defacto currency in the world. Saudi Arabia is well known for its links and funding to terrorists, but because SA has oil, USA and best buddies at every level from politics to the economy.

See the bigger picture, not the smoke screen.

India should also get a share of this oil. Not fair that partition happened without India knowing that Pakistan has hidden oil reserves. This is cheating.

While some of the claims are bordering on exaggeration and sensationalism, it is indeed true that we can potentially reap massive financial and political benefits from this. However, we should not distract ourselves from the biggest problems that this country faces and has faced since its inception because of these petrodollar signs.

The biggest problems are extremism/terrorism and the power of the military. We cannot cast aside those issues because we are rich. We don't want to be KSA.

Not surprised about this behaviour from a PPP supporter, consistently doing wrong so long as you get away with it.

just shows how immature you are.

Its natural human behavior.
If there is no penalty against something why should i refrain my self from doing something?

THe purpose of implementing law (read, not having Law but actually implementing it), is to stop a behavior. Having a law in place means nothing if its not implemented.

Texas Tea... now available in Pakistan!

Texas tea, Black gold, whatever you want to call it, we can now be bigwigs at OPEC and throw tantrums at meetings and spanners into the works whenever we feel so inclined.

I wonder if we could sell all this crude to other countries, let them pollute their air, and use the proceeds to build dams and solar plants and wind farms in Pakistan?

All this oil money should be spent on world class infrastructure projects, this will set Pakistan from the rest of the subcontinent.

I'm refurbishing the basement for my harem already, although I may need to rent a larger space for the racehorses. Also I hear Tottenham Hotspur may be up for sale soon...

On a serious note though, what's a realistic timeline for Pakistan reaping the benefits if this news turns out to be true? How long does it take to set up the necessary extraction infrastructure and to actually start seeing the product on the market? If the government decides to generate electricity for local consumption, what needs to be put into place before that begins to happen? I for one am clueless when it comes to these details.

shouldn't take long, azerbaijan had a similar oil boom in the 2000s, things will be noticeable once you see Pakistan building expensive skyscrappers and useless art museums lol

Pakistan could go from rags to riches in no time!

Now all those seculars who keep complaining will be making a queue to cross the border when they are invited to go to Pakistan by BJP spokesmen. :runaway:

Completely agree. Law enforcement and accountability are both extremely important to make people think twice before committing any crime.

This is the news I'm most excited about and most eagerly waiting to hear good news very soon InshAllah! I pray that this come to be true and the wealth is used for making our country reach it's TRUE peak and potential. I ask you guys to also pray for huge discovery and proper usage of the wealth and resources, if found, on improving this country.

Ok I know its half-joking but you guys need to calm down...

The Azerbaijan / Baku comparison isnt realistic considering the country had a low base and a population of less than 10 million. Pakistan has much bigger ramp up needed relatively so there wont be any quick infrastructure build up before fixing the multitudes of messes we face. You cant compare a nation of 10 million to 200 million when the resevres will be comparable

Also having worked in the oil industry I know there will be a long wait period. Atleast 4-5 years will be required for any kind of production.

However what is probably the most dampening news is that the crude oil today is just not the same commodity as it was even half a decade ago. For almost four years now crude oil (WTI) has been hovering between $40 and $70 per barrell which isnt great. Prior to 2014 summer it was over $100 per barrel.

And offshore drilling requires a lot of capital investment so even if reserves are massive it might be possible that at $60 per barrell the economics might just now work. And I dont see crude reaching $100 levels any time soon. It hasnt in half a decade and now the US is the biggest producer in the world so there will be a downward supply pressure keeping prices in check.

Finally, the drillable reserves are usually much less in realizable terms than you always hear at the start.

So all these reasons are why I would keep expectations tempered.

However even if we produce enough crude oil that we are able to cut our oil import bill by 1/3rd it would be a game changer for us.

It'd still be good even if pakistan is only able to drill 5% of the 500 million + barrels

Thanks, these are the sort of details I was curious about. What sort of capital investment would be needed to get the infrastructure in place? I'm guessing the cost is prohibitive enough for us not to be able to do it ourselves and having to rely on foreign companies, who in return will probably want a share of the future profits? Does the $60 a barrel figure take into account the foreign company's cut?

The fiscal details aside, what is even more fascinating are the geopolitical ramifications of this discovery. Pakistan was strategic as is, given how we straddle the South Asia-Central Asia-Middle East fault lines. What with CPEC and now this discovery, there is likely to be even more of a focus on our coastal regions from various players.

your points are valid, i think Pakistanis need to understand the potential discovery in context of the countries population.

i.e. the most important thing, if this discovery materialises will not be the dollar impact of selling oil. it will be the impact of increased energy security, especially given the very low level of energy security currently.

secondly if proven true, you will see peripheral industrial investment that comes along with the support of a developing industry.

in real terms this may mean a fraction of a percent bump up in growth, but in real terms it will affect long term investment decision making which will have a cumulative effect over say ten, fifteen years, imo.

Exactly, It will save us 10-20 Bil annually that we spend on import oil from middle east, it will also make our FP independent from Saudi Arabia/UAE and help develop auxiallry industries that support Oil/Gas exploration extraction (if done right).

im no expert but afaik foreign companies are needed for their expertise and knowledge of digging ultra deep wells more than specific capital injection, (which altho expensive by corporate standards is not too bad for state back enterprises), nearly all of them are found in the developed (in oil industry terms at least) world.

the foreign companies are owners in a joint venture with Pakistani companies, thus the share the profits or losses roughly equally (or pro-rata equal to their share in the venture).

just shows how immature you are.

Its natural human behavior.
If there is no penalty against something why should i refrain my self from doing something?

THe purpose of implementing law (read, not having Law but actually implementing it), is to stop a behavior. Having a law in place means nothing if its not implemented.

No. It shows how selfish you are.

Using your logic, if a punishment isn't implemented for murder, you should be able to get away with it.

We all have a duty to be considerate.

how laws are implemented ends up shaping the society.

If in a society law isn't implemented, and you get away with stuff, then why follow it.

Its like drinking and driving, if there was no law, every drunk person would do it, but if there is a punishment, then you can reduce the extent of it.

You cant expect people to not to behave in a certain way out of goodwill. Even if some societies do that, thats because that society has been shaped due to the implementation of laws in the past.

Again, study sociology and human behavior atleast

I wonder what sort of leverage the two parties in such arrangements (governments and companies) have over each other. I wouldn’t mind being the proverbial fly on the wall when matters of “mutual interest” are debated by the parties in light of geopolitical realities.

Pakistan oil discovery may have meaning to entire region: Chinese media

BEIJING: Pakistan may soon hit an oil jackpot and that will be good news for not only the country itself but all of South Asia as well as China and Gulf nations, Chinese media has said.

There is a strong possibility that the country may discover a very big oil reserve in its waters. If this prediction comes true, the discovery will help the South Asian country to tackle its economic problems, Global Times reported on Wednesday.

US oil giant Exxon Mobil and Italy’s ENI have been involved since January in drilling an ultra-deep oil well.

Pakistan may have a more urgent need for foreign investment if massive oil reserves were indeed discovered. There may be more international companies wanting to participate in related projects ranging from exploration to refining and logistics. The related investment will also help Pakistan maintain its growth momentum.

China has sound cooperation in energy with Pakistan.

A big oil find would stimulate investment enthusiasm among Chinese companies. China is willing to support Pakistan’s efforts to seize the development opportunity such a find might bring, and handle any challenges.

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) was originally conceived as a strategic project with oil and gas pipeline links between Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and Gwadar port.

If Pakistan discovers massive oil reserves, that will be a motivation to extend Pakistan’s pipeline network further into neighbouring countries, and also to enhance energy cooperation with Gulf nations such as Saudi Arabia.

Not only China but also the whole region will benefit from economic integration through energy connectivity.

Using those reserves will likely result in large cross-border capital flows, infrastructure investment, energy trades, and people-to-people exchanges. The region will see the development and utilisation of oil reserves as a pillar of economic integration and stability.

The geopolitical picture in Asia has long been complex and uneven, but Pakistan’s potential oil reserves are likely a game-changer for the region, with economic cooperation in energy.

Lol at meaning for entire region. India shouldn't get a drop of it.
