Ollie Pope (147*) guides England to a 126-run lead as they end Day 3 of the 1st Test against India at 316/6

WOW! It would have been hitting leg stump. The review would have brought about a wicket. Bumrah is devastated!

And Bumrah gets that wicket finally.

Cleans up Duckett.

Bumrah gets a wicket!

England needs one player to get a big score and not just these fast starts if they want to have any chance

Next game, India can drop Siraj and play Kuldeep.

Quartet of spin bowling, damn!

WICKET! Duckett b Bumrah 47 - England 113-2

Bumrah gets his man! He absolutely rattles the off stump and he certainly enjoyed that one and so did this crowd.

A solid 47 from Duckett but he will be disappointed with the shot he tried to play there.

England misread the pitch and played an unbalanced side. This is a superb pitch, beautiful conditions and excellent weather to play cricket.

Anderson would have done better here than he may do in the next 2-3 venues.

Next game anyways, they must play one more pacer or if its more drier than this one then play Dan Lawrence as an extra batter.

I thought England will lose by an innings but they've done extremely well today. Augurs well for the rest of the series.
Pleasing to see Ashwin go for 6/over in India. Quite an achievement

100%. These enterprising but prematurely concluded 30s-40s aren’t going to cut it. One of the top six needs to get a ton here if England want to set any kind of a 4th innings score.

WICKET! Root lbw b Bumrah 2 - England 117-3

They have got root! Bumrah with the breakthrough once again as the final delivery of his over beats the inside edge from Root.

Root opts for the review but it is clear that the leg stump would have been hit on ball-tracking. Big wicket.

Their plan is overattacking while bowling and batting. Both cost them in this match. I understand defending is not easy here without proper technique. But going after every ball blindly is also a bad idea. Their thought process is bowlers will lose their mind and start bowling more crappy deliveries. These guys are experienced.

England can still bat well if they mix caution with aggression. Let us see hwo they go about it.

Joe Root vs Bumrah in Tests:

19 innings
245 runs
7 dismissals
Avg 35.00

Top class from Bumrah.

Huge test for England in this spell.

How should England play Bumrah with ball reversing?

Former England batter Kevin Pietersen:

"Bumrah has delivered some incredible skill, some unbelievable skill. As a batter you have to try and stand leg-side of the ball, use your bat if the ball is hitting the stumps. Bairstow is doing that well.

"Watch the ball, don’t fall over to backward point. You have to make a real concerted effort to get your head to mid-on. As soon as you get outside off stump, you are dead and buried."

The pitch has lost pace compared to what I saw on first day.

Seems like day 1 was the toughest to bat so far. Yesterday was easy, and today it was again relatively straightforward until the ball started reversing. England did pretty well to make 246 in those difficult first day conditions, but should they have chosen to bowl first?

2 more wickets before 200 would close the game ... 131/3 in 26 [ 51 overs to go for the day ]

Great skills from Bumrah but pace is mostly in the range of 135-140.

It's not in the 145+ range which Pak pacers can do with even one hand tied to the knot.

pitch being slow , batsmen going back can handle just about everything from spinners except perhaps a shooter ... 140/4

Feels like overall bad planning from England this match.

The 3 spinners concept was fine, but Leach getting injured out a dent in it and it’s not necessary when Root is as good, if not better, of a bowler than the specialists. I get that Mark Wood adds another dimension to an attack with his pace but I’d rather have Jimmy Anderson opening the bowling to exploit any new ball swing before switching over to spinners taking all of the overs.

First innings in particular, it felt like the pitch was doing more, and even though England was playing the pitch fine, England’s top 5 all gave their wicket away. Similar thing happened to some of top order Indian batsmen. This pitch is solid to bat on. England should not have minded batting a bit slower knowing that the pitch may break down a bit more if India was forced to bat on day 5.

Conditions were not bad even on day 1.
Actually against Ashwin and jadeja u cant do much in India except hope for a miracle

The big three in Root Bairstow and Stokes needed to deliver. Fizzled away too quickly and timidly.

So Pope has been the batter of the day ha. Should try and get a 100

This should have been a 2 match series. England have yet to play on a real turner. Miserable days ahead.

Eng missed Anderson in this test. Bumrah got reverse swing in both innings. Anderson would hv been handy.

I expected an innings loss before today’s play. That looks unlikely now. Can England squeeze this into a fourth day?

Can England salvage something in this session? If they do, it feels like it will come down to Ollie Pope.

Eighteen runs needed to just get on par with India. It is a big hill to climb.

I always admire ur knowledge of the game bro. Pope's done exactly that in this innings. Solid in defence but pounced on opportunities to score

Ashwin has been involved in 2 absolutely hilarious fielding efforts in a space of 20 minutes

Comical fielding from Ashwin who looks old and has poor fitness these days.

Bumrah’s action was never this susceptible in his early days and I would say his first 4-5 years as a bowler

How does hyper extension work? It becomes more and more blatant the older you get?

Think a 100 run lead will all they will get

Really hope that Ollie can complete his ton here. Would do wonders for his confidence.

“Jahaan Matters barey hote hain

Wahaan Surrey ke lads Kharre hote hain”

Translation for @James : when the stakes are high, the lads from Surrey rise to the task!

He needs to stay not out, guide them all the way with a meaningful partnership with every wicket. Foakes is standing firm with him at the moment

Good partnership and great innings from Ollie Pope but still a very long long way to go until this game begins to look competitive.

250-300 is probably the kind of target England needs to set considering Leach is also injured. Just hard to imagine Joe Root and Rehan Ahmed spinning the England team to victory against this Indian line up.

4th innings on a day 4 Indian pitch

You just need to land the ball in the right place with a bit of finger tweak. Then watch the pitch so it’s magic

I think usually that’s the case, but this pitch has played better than lots of Indian pitches I see. I think in both of the first innings, England and India’s top 5 batsmen got out playing attacking shots.

There have been instances of the pitch doing more though, for example earlier with the Bumrah spell where he was getting a hint of reverse.

that is an outstanding knock and he was the team's weakest player of spin. if only liam dawson was playing.

This partnership has now assumed dangerous proportions.
