Yes, the best ever when it comes to ODIs, and the only spinner to date who could bowl a legal doosra.

Excellent bowler was a true innovator.. I never quite understood what happened to his career he seemed to be dropped very early on and did not receive a proper farewell as well?

Best ODI spinner from 90s.

Averaged like 19 or something in that time and performed in every country.

Multiple reasons.

He became a bit too reliant on his variations rather than sticking to his strengths, and the rise of Shoaib Malik also hampered his career, who was a promising bowler before his doosra got banned in 2003 and was a much better batsman.

With Afridi also playing as all-rounder and with Kaneria establishing himself in Tests, Saqlain soon became surplus to requirements.

Not sure whether that's the real reason.

Bowlers who are reliant on variations cannot perform so well in every country for 5+ years that too at a level that Saqlain did.

And if those variations were good enough to last for 5+ years, it would have lasted more longer.

If a bowler has relied too much on variations later on, then something happened to his main deliveries.

Ahh I see, seems unfortunate for him.. In early 2000's there was enough video technology available for him to work on his weaknesses and with a proper coach he could have worked out strategies..

I believe that Saqlain was eventually found out a bit. Because of his reliance on the doosra, his stock off-spinner because less and less effective.

Also, Pakistan does not have a good history of giving its players a nice farewell once they are no longer required. Look at the likes of MoYo and Razzaq etc., they got dumped because they were no longer required.

Yea that sucks.. If a player has served the nation for 10 years or more then atleast give him a proper farewell.. Even if not in an international match organise a T20 for them where they captain one side and the other side is captained by current national team captain.. Every player deserves that much imo and the normal gifts and trophy and speeches after the match..

What a day it was. His hat-trick & Saeed anwar's century in this match was the highlight of the tournament for me.

I teased the hell out of my indian neighbor's kids for weeks after we qualified and Indian team got eliminated.

He had multiple injuries. By 2003, his shoulder & knees were gone and he played the india 2004 series while injured. He has mentioned this a lot on game on hai when asked by doc nouman about that Sehwag thrashing in multan.

Saqlain should always be mentioned when anyone talks about unfulfilled potential.

his career basically ended at the age of 26 (!!) because of injuries. And he still managed to get almost 500 intl wickets

extremely underrated cricketer

His downfall was the knee injury more than anything else. When it comes to legal off spin bowling, no one comes close to him in LOI. Razzaq and Saqlain provided the Pak LOI team a balance that a team can achieve only so many times in a century. He is my favorite off spinner of all time!

Best ODI spinner of all time and an underrated test bowler. He was the only spinners Indian batsmen found hard to play at home.

He was finished after 2000.
