Pace bowling prospects of England

Any English fan out here ?

How good are the following pacers ? What can be expected from them ?

Jamie Porter
Josh Tongue
Olly Stone
Jamie Overton
George Garton

Feel free to name other English pace bowling prospects.
 
Jamie Porter should already be in the England side but due to bias that normally favours Yorkshire and Lancashire, we may not see him for a while. He is the best prospect on the scene, young, decent enough pace (seen him live a few times and bowls lively), the odd speed gun I've seen on him seems to indicate he is doing about 82-86 mph when in full rhythm. Injuries hampered him a little bit last year.

I'm not a fan of either Overton, both are mechanical bowlers and England have far too many of those.

Can't say too much on the others beyond the stats we can all find on cricinfo.

Jamie Porter's action resembles the action of Simon Jones.

I have read that Jamie Overton is fast.

George Garton is a left armer. English batsmen played him in the practice to get prepared for facing Mitchell Starc before the Ashes.

Olly Stone plays for Warwickshire and recently got a career best 8/80 in a FC match. In YouTube saw that, he has pace and can bowl at 92 mph. England ex bowling coach Ottis Gibson has said that he is someone exciting to keep an eye on.

Olly Stone needs to debut. He's clocked 96mph at the Loughborough academy. The fastest speed ever recorded in that academy. They should play him before he turns into another Stuart Meaker.

Porters an extremely similar bowler to Craig Overton, bowls around 80-82mph on average, are accurate and move the ball around. Not sure what Lancashire/Yorkshire bias you're talking about in the bowling department in particular. Jimmy Anderson?

Although he's not young I imagine Richard Gleeson isn't a million miles off right now if looking for a fast bowler.

I keep hearing one of the overton's is fast but can't remember which one played in the Ashes, which ever one it was was not particularly impressive.

Does Olly Stone consistently hit those speeds? Like I said, I wouldnt know too much beyond cricinfo so I should check out some YT vids.

Porter is miles better than Overton, just in a different league.

And I when I talk about the bias, I'm not just talking bowling, I am talking the entire England set up, which has historically looked down upon certain counties, Essex being one of them.

Porter is miles better than Overton, just in a different league.

And I when I talk about the bias, I'm not just talking bowling, I am talking the entire England set up, which has historically looked down upon certain counties, Essex being one of them.

Craig Overton played in the Ashes, the slower of the twins. Jamie's had a lot of injuries recently though so I'm not sure what his pace is like nowadays.

Disagree on Porter being substantially better than Overton. In the end though that won't be his problem, it'll be that he's another bowler who doesn't have much pace in him which isn't what England are desperate for right now.

England are desperate for a wicket taker to take them out of the JImmy/Broad era when necessary. Porter is that guy. They can have guys who bowl at 90 mph (I havent seen any consistently in the counties since Jones, Freddie, Finn and Harmy) to play around him.

Regardless of all that, the ECB selectors claim they pick players on who performs best, no one out performed Porter last year yet he was not selected.

Porter is way too slow. Another Chadd Sayers and Noffke. Please don't get carried away by the tragic temptation of statistics.

It's not just stats. I've seen him bowl plenty of times over 2 seasons. He is quick enough and has been clocked at 86mph at times. He is also accurate, can seam and swing and gets it through in English conditions at the right length.

Plus, with a tonne of pace bowling failures by England, why should Porter not be tried?
 
Craig Overton claimed his 400th first-class wicket as Somerset rallied against Hampshire at Taunton.

Overton claimed the scalps of Felix Organ, Ian Holland and James Vince as Hampshire closed on 144-5 in their LV= Insurance County Championship Division One clash.
 
As per the below list, England currently have NINE seam bowlers sat on the sideline injured; some of them long term.

A very poor situation.

Crickey. Didn't realise the situation with injuries was this bad. Alot of its to do with burn out, England have had a ridiculous schedule for the last year and half as well as the non stop gravey train of the t20 leagues around the world.

Olly Stone is back bowling in the Blast.

Has seven wickets in six matches so far and by all accounts he is bowling well (and fast!)
 
England’s selections are disappointing - they very rarely take risks. We get run of the mill up n down bowlers like Potts. Pick someone different like Jamie Overton or Saqib Mahmood
 
It is testament to depth of England county system that even after 7 Test level pacers (exclude Currans) are out they are still able to field a good Test seam attack.

Saqib is injured with a stress fracture for the rest of the season.

Jamie Overton is making his debut today.

It's a crying shame that no bowler in England - despite bowling half his games in England - can average under 25 with the ball like other country's bowlers can do.
 
Potts is such a weak bowler. The guy will get decimated outside of England. Just make him play 1 Test Match in India and 1 in Australia and you'll never see him again.

He's playing in England. Horses for courses. We can bring in Overton, Stone, Wood etc. elsewhere.
 
I like the look of Overton, he's got some Harmison about him.
 
England have abundance of fast bowlers.
Look at their current fast bowling options for tests (including injured ones).

Too many quality options to choose from.
 
Jamie Overton after Day 1 of 3rd Test vs NZ:

"It has been a good day, I am a bit tired now but I have a good do," said Overton.

"A little bit nervous, the slope took me a little bit by surprise.

"The first couple of overs just trying to get used to it... then finding rhythm.

"The batters are just a higher quality and you have to be on it all the time.

"I more just wanted to play my way and do things how I wanted to do things.

"I am quite an aggressive cricketer so it is getting fired up but not taking it too far.

"You want to get it quite early and out the way.

"It would be nice to get a few more but I will settle for that today."
 
Good effort today from Jamie.

Test cricket is a huge step up.

2. Stuart Broad - old washed up
3. Chris Woakes. - mediocre. Only good in England
4. Ollie Robinson - slow trundler only good in england
5. Mark Wood - average bowler but has pace. Ok bowler
6. Olly Stone - very good talent but is injured for most of the year. Not the same bowler anymore post injury
7. Ben Stokes - lol he is a good support bowler not as main bowler
8. Jofra Archer - limited overs bowler
9. Sam Curran - tomato can bowler
10. Craig Overton - average bowler. Support bowler
11. Saqib Mahmood - average bowler. Injury prone
12. Mathew Fisher. - trash
13. Matty Potts - trash
14. Jamie Overton - good prospect. Not good enough

Too many quality options to choose from.

All not good enough. Wood is average. Stone spends more time in the hospital than a doctor.
Overton just started. Stop overrating English cans. They aren't good enough. I do agree that their current talents are better than those pre historic so called stalwarts that played amateur cricket against nobodies.

Potts. Broad all weak bowlers now. Broad is washed up.
Anderson is good but old too.

England only 2 or 3 bowlers max.
Stone if fit
Woody who is inconsistent
Ollie Robbie

Jamie overton looks good

That's it. What England have Is decent support bowlers who can bat.

Solid figures for Matthew Potts in the first innings at Headingley against New Zealand. Was very difficult to score off and could have easily had a couple more wickets.

33.1 J Overton to Latham, out Caught by Bairstow!! .. And he strikes first ball! Lapse in concentration for Latham, first ball after the break, he has a nervy poke to one that straightened after pitching, gets a faint edge and Bairstow does the rest. Could have let it go, but that's what happens after a break, makes you want to have a feel of bat hitting the ball, Latham did the same and that caused his downfall.

33.2 J Overton to Conway, no run, Conway cops a blow on his helmet and he looks shaken! - banged in short and kept following him as he looked to sway away from the line - couldn't do so in time and is clonked on the side of the helmet!

Concussion review: Conway is struggling to fit in his new helmet, was bowled at pace, was 89 mph from Overton.

33.3 J Overton to Conway, no run, .. and as expected, it's another short delivery from Overton, doesn't bounce as much as Conway expected, he's through with the swivel pull and is struck right in the body!

Surrey CCC can confirm an injury to Jamie Overton.

Jamie, who had been in the UAE, has returned to the UK and further investigations have today revealed that he has sustained a stress fracture of the lumbar spine.

He will begin a period of rehabilitation.
 
The Surrey and England fast bowler Jamie Overton will be unable to bowl for the foreseeable future, all but ending his hopes of playing in the Ashes, after suffering a stress fracture of the back.

verton has returned home from the UAE, where he was due to play for Gulf Giants, having first suffered pain in his back towards the end of the last English summer.

He has been diagnosed with a lumbar stress fracture and is currently seeing specialists. While an exact return date has not been specified, the injury will almost certainly prevent him bowling in first-class matches until mid-summer. As an all-rounder, he could play some T20 cricket as a specialist batsman sooner.

With that, his slim hopes of playing in this summer’s Ashes have almost certainly ended as he will be unable to build up the body of work to make his case before the series begins on June 16.

England’s fast bowling stocks, having been ravaged by injury for much of 2022, are looking deeper now, pushing Overton down the pecking order. England’s pacemen were plagued by stress fractures last year, with Olly Stone, Jofra Archer, Saqib Mahmood and Matt Fisher all suffering the injury. All four are back in the England or Lions squads.

Stone or Archer
Rehan

Stokes and Root can do the fifth bowler job between them.
 
They probably have the biggest pool of pace bowlers currently.

Yet people criticise County cricket.

There was an injury crisis among quick bowlers, without which Broad would have been replaced and Anderson would be playing less often. Bowlers are now returning from injury.

However, England’s turnaround since the WI tour has been astonishing.

The emergence of Robinson is a critical factor - an all-conditions wicket-taking bowler.
