What's new

Pakistan (148/5) defeat Afghanistan (147/6) by 5 wickets after another late blitz by Asif Ali

Babar Azam: We started well with the bowl, got a lot of wickets like we planned. Maybe gave away 10-15 runs too many at the end. With the bat, we couldn't capitalise the powerplay as we wanted to. At the end, with Malik and Asif Ali, we knew they could do the job. He (Asif Ali) is known for this and I was confident pre-tournament itself that he would deliver when needed.

Mohammad Nabi: We didn't start well but the total on the board was a decent one for this pitch. We discussed that 150 would be a good score and so we dug deep. And then got some runs in the last few overs. I think three spinners are enough. Rashid bowled at the right time and we tried to take the game deep. Asif Ali played really well in the 19th over. Lot of positives from today's game. We fought really well till the end.

Asif Ali, Player of the Match: I would like to congratulate the Pakistan team and all our fans. I was confident of finishing it off from this end and that's what I told Shoaib Malik before he got out. I look at the situation of the match, and I target the bowlers accordingly. I was talking to Shoaib when I walked in to bat and I told him that I was confident enough of getting 20-25 in one over against Karim Janat, which I did.

Heartening win. But we need to be better in countering Mujeeb.

Saqlain is such a calming influence on the team. His simple statements have such a soothing effect and you can see it.

This easily could have been a horrible week for Pakistani cricket but it's turned out to be a pretty fantastic week. 3 games, 3 chases & Pakistan have been able to do it without going into the last over.

Great to see and I am glad to see the most criticized players in Rauf/Shadab/Malik/Asif all performing so well.

Great win for Pakistan.

But, I was expecting it. Afghans simply didn't have the right 5th bowler.

They gave more competition to Pak than India did .. so congratulations to them..

But Congratulations mainly to PCT fans for making it to semis well done.

We conceeded 72 of the last 7 overs which was unacceptable as that allowed Afghanistan's spinners to come into the match. Hope the bowling coach gives a phainty to Hasan Ali and Haris Rauf for some brainless bowling.

Asif Ali smoked four sixes in an over to help Pakistan make it a hat-trick of Super 12 victories as they handed Afghanistan their first defeat of the tournament in Group 2.

Asif blitzed 25 in just seven balls to ensure Babar Azam’s 51 did not go to waste as they successfully chased 148 to win by five wickets in front of a raucous crowd at the Dubai International Stadium.

Only some back-end fireworks from Afghanistan skipper Mohammad Nabi and Gulbadin Naib, who shared an unbeaten stand of 71 off 48 balls, gave their side a competitive total after they had slipped to 76 for six.

Asif had smashed 27 in 12 balls to help Pakistan beat New Zealand last time out and having trumped India in their opener, they have now cemented their spot on top of Group 2 and put one foot in the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s World T20 2021.

Nabi bucked the trend by choosing to bat in Dubai despite the dew and may have been regretting that call when Hazratullah Zazai was dismissed for a five-ball duck in the second over.

The Afghanistan opener’s top edge off Imad Wasim was safely pouched by Haris Rauf to give Pakistan an early breakthrough.

Mohammad Shazad struck the first boundary of the innings, but two balls later departed for eight after tamely chipping Shaheen Shah Afridi straight to mid-on to leave Afghanistan floundering at 13 for two.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz got off the mark in some style, planting Wasim into the stands with an eye-catching slog-sweep but should have been easily run out soon after only for Mohammad Rizwan’s wayward throw to spare his blushes.

Asghar Afghan also opened his account with a maximum in Wasim’s second over which went for 17, but the No.4 was soon walking back for 10 after Rauf took a sharp return catch, with his younger brother Karim Janat replacing him.

In what was now typical fashion, Janat got going with a six off Haris but could only watch on as Rahmanullah holed out off Afridi for 10 as Afghanistan lost four wickets inside an action-packed powerplay, finishing on 49 for four.

Janat’s promising partnership of 25 with Najibullah Zadran was cut short when the former holed out off Imad, who finished with two for 25, for 15 in the 10th over.

The theme of big hits and wickets continued when Najibullah sent Shadab Khan out of the park only for the bowler to exact immediate revenge, having him caught behind for 22 with a wrong-un.

Skipper Nabi was joined by Gulbadin and the pair spun the game on its head with a vital partnership of 71 off 48 balls, both batters finishing unbeaten on 35.

Gulbadin exploded into life in Hasan Ali’s 18th over, smashing a six and two fours on his way to single-handedly adding 19 of the 21 runs scored.

The 50 partnership came off just 36 balls and the carnage continued with Haris' 19th over going for 15 runs as Pakistan leaked 36 runs in just 12 balls.

Shaheen's final over cost just seven, even with a no-ball, but the damage was done, and Afghanistan finished on 147 for six, more than enough for their spinners to get stuck into.

Pakistan got off to a slow start in reply when Rizwan, eight off 10, was well caught on the boundary by Naveen-ul-Haq off Mujeeb Ur Rahman in just the third over.

Fakhar Zaman wasted no time in getting going as he and captain Babar guided Pakistan to 38 for one from the powerplay before Mujeeb returned to complete an excellent spell of one for 14 from his four overs.

Fakhar and Babar’s partnership reached 50 from just 39 balls as Pakistan took control of the chase with wickets in hand.

Babar’s class shone through as he made his way to 36 before danger man Rashid Khan, belatedly brought into the attack in the 11th over, thought he had him trapped LBW only for the decision to be overturned on review.

But DRS could not save the skipper’s partner Fakhar as Nabi had him pinned in front for 30 from the very next ball at the other end, curtailing the third-wicket partnership of 63 and leaving Pakistan 75 for two.

Rashid had his 100th T20 international wicket, the quickest to the milestone, for real when Mohammad Hafeez’s top-edge found Gulbadin to give Afghanistan a chance with the asking rate creeping over nine.

Babar should have been caught by Naveen off Rashid but the spinner had his man with the final ball of his spell of two for 26, a googly castling the Pakistan skipper as he surprisingly aimed a huge swipe into the leg side with 12 already having come from the 17th over.

Naveen bowled a sensational 18th over which cost just two runs during which he shelled an exceptionally tough reaction chance off Shoaib Malik but two balls later the veteran batter nicked one behind to depart for 19 with 24 still needed off 13.

Just as Afghanistan clawed their way in front, Asif had other ideas, belting four huge sixes off Janat in the 19th over to seal an incredible victory with six balls to spare.

Scores in Brief

Pakistan beat Afghanistan at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai by five wickets
Afghanistan 147/6 in 20 overs (Mohammad Nabi 35 not out, Gulbadin Naib 35 not out; Imad Wasim 2/25, Shaheen Shah Afridi 1/22, Shadab Khan 1/22)
Pakistan 148/5 in 19 overs (Babar Azam 51, Fakhar Zaman 30, Asif Ali 25 not out; Rashid Khan 2/26, Mujeeb Ur Rahman 1/14)

Player of the Match: Asif Ali (Pakistan)

It's no secret that the overs of the Afghan pace bowlers were going to decide the match, and exactly so it happened. Actually, to be honest, I was quite surprised and hugely impressed with the way Naveen bowled the 18th over. Afghanistan have come close to beating Pakistan quite often now but always mess it up with their inability to handle the pressure. It looks so clear on the screen that the emotions just take over and the brain takes the backseat.

Incredible, incredible hitting by Asif Ali. Wow, just wow! I really hope that Mahmadullah was watching the match, the supposed 'finisher' of the Bangladesh team. There was a huge moment of concern the moment Malik got out, but Asif never let much of an issue to be made out of it. A great cameo!

Quite a few factors but the crucial decision to NOT take a single on the 18.6th ball, so that he could get on the strike in the 19th over.

Malik's six was also absolutely crucial !!

Pakistan winning all the matches is making group equation easy.. They are surely qualifying for Semis..
One of Afghan, India and Newzealand to follow them 👍🏻👍🏻

Yep, we must look into it.
Afghanistan managed to score a lot more than what they should've.

Our bowling force needs to be re-evaluated.

I also feel that Pak bowlers, especially Shaheen, tried to over-do it today. He was a bit more hyper and let his emotions took control over his common sense.

There was no need to take that LBW review. Even a blind man could see it was not out.

He needs to display a controlled aggression and focus on the swing which was totally missing from his bowling. But yes, he made it up with the 20th over.

And the less is talked about Hassan Ali, the better.

Bang on. For me it was the best six innings when you account for the fact that Rashid Khan is the best T20I (and possibly white ball) spinner in the world.

Pakistan 148/5, Afghanistan 147/6

Just wanted to ask you about your decision to bat first in this Dubai pitch where the trend has been that you win the toss and win the match batting second. How would you defend that decision? And of course some of the ticketless fans barged into the stadium and created a lot of ruckus. A message for them to not repeat this again in the future from your side?

MOHAMMAD NABI: Yeah, I think batting decision was not that bad, but we played at the start aggressively because the pitch is a little bit holding. That's why. But a total on the board 148, 149 runs would be enough on these kind of pitches.
For the Afghan fans, please buy a ticket and come to the stadium. Don't repeat again. This is not good.

Regarding the T20 World Cup Afghan team appearance here, you have given good performance today. You have played very well. I think overall the match was balanced. What do you think in future? Can you create some upsets?

MOHAMMAD NABI: Yeah, we played only two games, and we won one game, and today was a close game. At the end Pakistan win the game. There's a lot of positive things in these games. We take the positive things and we have three more games, inshallah we'll do well, and now our team is in high morale.

Do you think the bowling let you down or the batting? Which would you have liked to be stronger in this contest?

MOHAMMAD NABI: I think it's both batting and bowling are balanced. But we are more concentrated on the bowling, the way our spinner is bowling, defend 150, almost 160 runs will be good enough in these conditions.

Pakistan came into this game full of confidence; you've taken them extremely close tonight. How much motivation and confidence can you take from this performance tonight?

MOHAMMAD NABI: Yeah, every team is coming on confidence to win the game, and we try our best and we do 120 per cent in the game.
But it's part of the game, winning, losing, and Pakistan finished the game well at the end. But our boys played really well. We throw early wickets, then we put a decent total on the board. We restrict them very tight until 19th over. At the end, Pakistan won the game. That's a part of cricket.

What was the plan and thought process behind holding Rashid Khan until the 10th over because that is something which surprised a lot of fans and the media in the pressroom?

MOHAMMAD NABI: I think it's not too late after 10 overs. He bowled really well, and he restricted them quite well, the batsmen. That's why at the end they have 12 balls for 24 runs at the end. We restrict quite well.

Afghanistan is a real force and with a young population, all they need to do is build facilities. Their natural talent is amazing

In T20 they are better than Bangladesh.I would say they are not far behind top teams. They have very good spinners but they need a few good fast bowlers too.

The afghan team has matured over the past few years. The afghans of the olden times would have gone all guns blazing after losing the initial 6 wickets and would have been bowled out for under 100. But the 7th wicket partnership rotated the strike and bid its time and then capitalized at the end overs.

It was a close game. Yes Pak conceded 15 runs too many.

this is their best format. They have a world class player in Rashid. They can absolutely win a T20 WC

Nearly got heart attack. Lost sleep but a real satisfaction at the end.
But Hasan Ali needs to go so as Hafeez. We cannot carry so many non-performers if we want to go final.

ISLAMABAD, Oct 29 (APP):Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain on Friday felicitated Pakistan cricket team for clinching third consecutive victory in ICC T20 World Cup, 2021.

In a statement, he said Pakistan defeated Afghanistan with five wickets after India and New Zealand. Both the teams of Pakistan and Afghanistan had displayed impressive game of cricket. He paid tributes to the Afghan cricket team for presenting the best game.

Pathetic management, ICC management team should resign, There was no one to guide all run away, Afghan hooligans' were running breaking all barriers. In spite of ticket we need to go back as police/commandos decided to close the gates due to security concern,
Some Afghan even able to brake the gate on East General entrance and gone in without tickets & we ticket holders were stop, ICC was sleeping as apparently they are on weekend holiday, The lady on customer service counter told she is not customer service but baggage handler, Even the platinum list ticket scan person were no where to be seen on general gates,
ICC or so called host (who want there name printed on shirt) no where to be seen.
Just play all matches behind close doors if you can't manage. Pathetic....... Sham on ICC & Host

We are lucky 2nd consecutive times. If Afghan top order didn't throw away their wickets we could have loss by 30+ runs. Even with 147 if Asif gone for duck we would loose the match.

Getting some real 'India of CT2013' vibes from this Pakistan team. :afridi

A young , rejuvenated team with no mental baggages, peaking at the exact right time. Going to take something special from one of Aus/Eng to knock this team out in the semis or the final.

First of all, tell us about the mood in the camp after a narrow defeat against Pakistan, a very hard-fought match played by Afghanistan. And the mood of Karim Janat who was struck for four sixes?

NAVEEN-UL-HAQ: The mood in the camp is a bit dull at the moment because after every close game, when you lose a close game, it is like desperate; you have to get back and really get back and we have to get around Karim and back him up because it can happen to anybody as it has happened before. So really get back, insha'Allah.

Do you think that Afghanistan needs another proper fast bowler in their 11, because we just saw yesterday that the part-timer at the all-arounder had to bowl the four overs. So do you think that Ghulbadin Naib should also be tried, or you need a proper fast bowler in your 11?

NAVEEN-UL-HAQ: In hindsight, you can say that we should have gone with this 11 or that or we should have bowled this bowler or that bowler. But after a game, you can't say much about it. It went wrong for him in that over in that he was bowling well. He bowled his three overs quite cheaply. He didn't go away with much runs. But it's up to the management and up to the captain, coach, whatever they think the best for the team, they will do that and they will go with that 11.

What do you think about the table right now? This stage, which teams do you think will qualify for the semifinals right now? I know it's a bit early, but how do you see it? You have more matches with India and New Zealand, and which two teams do you think will go for the semifinals?

NAVEEN-UL-HAQ: I think the table is right open, other than Pakistan who has already confirmed their spot in the semifinal, there are three teams that will be fighting for that spot because India has played one and lost one. And New Zealand has played one and lost one.

We'll be having a great contest, great matchup coming up with them in a week's time. So you can't say much at the moment who will be qualifying or who is not. It's only Pakistan who has made it through. But there is still one spot.

How do you see Afghanistan's chances against New Zealand, because they're playing in Indian conditions, spinning pitches, tough pitches for them. Do you see Afghanistan beating New Zealand?

NAVEEN-UL-HAQ: I see Afghanistan beating and having a great chance beating any team in this competition. As you saw last night, also Pakistan is one of, I should say, more balanced squad, balanced side. They're familiar to these conditions. They outclassed both the teams that they played against in the first two games.

And we almost got through the line. But it's Namibia coming next tomorrow and then it's India and New Zealand. So we're up for it. We're not like all down and we will be just discussing this last game. So we will look forward and looking forward to win these matches and get our spot in the semis.
