What's new

Pakistan (149/4) easily defeat New Zealand (147/8) by 6 wickets in Match 2 of the Tri-series

Babar has hit only 50 sixes so far in his career. He faced around 2400 balls already. Six count should be more than that.

Its funny when you have no pressure what you can achieve.

If he had to score 40 off 20 balls, he would have skied one.

Blair Tickner, who resembles Ron Burgundy, with a match losing over.

Good to see intent from Haider. This is how he should bat.

Babars seen haider at the other end and thought, ‘**** no batters left, so I better start going for it’.

Haider was waiting for the short ball, but next hit for four was really a scorcher. He should play at 6 Asif at nets

Captain with winning shot, congratulations. But still lot of questions to be asked. Shadab will not save you everytime.

If Rizwan won't get you, Babar will. Shabaash Pakistan. And to the bowling unit they were excellent today.

Maybe Haider can play the Asif Ali role of playing a few balls each innings.

Shahdab at 4 is worth persisting with as he can take spinners for cleaners. Pakistan should put Haider and Asif to open in the next insignificant match against bangla and let them get some confidence under the belt

Great win for Pakistan, consecutive victories just what we needed after the Asia Cup final and England series disappointments.

Positives: Babar leading from front, Shadab proving a viable middle order solution, Haider's cameo and the bowling firing again.

Negatives: Shan and Nawaz failures with bat. Rizwan unlucky with LBW decision but he'll surely bounce back.

My team for the world cup

5. Iftikhar
6. Asif
7. M. Haris
8. Nawaz
9. Naseem
10. Shaheen

This should be the batting order going forward. Except no Shan Masood at all. He should stick to Natwest t20 tournament only.

Will never happen.

This wasn't a waste of time unlike last few t20s.

We have hopefully found our 4 in Shadab and Haider might finally gain some confidence which he was sooo lacking.

Overall Pakistan were always in control of that match.

Things got a bit scary when Nawaz wasted a few balls but Pakistan were ahead of the game with Babar there.

Good performance that.

Kane Williamson | New Zealand captain: It was scrappy, there were some good bits but certainly was not polished. We were up against a quality opposition, Pakistan were very clincal and hit their targets with the ball. We wanted a couple of big overs to get to that big score but credit to them, they were very good. We certainly did not think it would be as wet – a learning for everyone I suppose [on the dew in the 2nd innings]. A little bit of both – not a surface where we could get an easy rhythm. Chappie [Chapman] came in, took that on and played an outstanding knock and tried to get the momentum we needed. We certainly pride ourselves in that area, we were not good enough with those skill sets [on the poor fielding from his side]. Hopefully a few learnings going into tomorrow night. The guys are feeling good, we know there will be a tough match tomorrow, a bit of homework to do, but looking forward to it.

Babar Azam | POTM and Pakistan captain: We have started well in the batting, me and Rizwan planned to utilise the first six overs and also the dew. We have a plan to send him up to charge the bowlers, he played well [on Shadab at 4]. Me and Shadab planned that I play all the way and he will go for his shots. Little bit different because of the dew and the ball is coming on nicely [on the pitch]. We are playing very well and as a captain I’m very happy. We assessed the conditions and executed our plans, our bowlers bowled very well. We have some rest now and we will look forward to that.

Are you sure you have found your no.3?

Christchurch, 8 October 2022: Pakistan continued to gain confidence and momentum ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Australia 2022 when they produced a clinical performance against New Zealand to win their second successive match in the tri-series in Christchurch on Saturday by six wickets.

Haris Rauf carried the good performance of the bowlers when he took three wickets in the penultimate over to restrict New Zealand to 147 for eight after they had elected to bat first.

Pakistan captain and world’s third-ranked batter Babar Azam then scored 79 not out with a strike-rate of 149 to help his side cross the line with 10 balls to spare. On Friday, Pakistan had brushed aside Bangladesh by 21 runs. In the second round, Pakistan will play New Zealand on Tuesday and Bangladesh on Thursday.

The change in the conditions and environment seems to be working for Pakistan when they produced another strong all-round performance on Saturday.

All the bowlers came to the party with accurate, intelligent and smart bowling, which was very well backed by the fielders. As a result, New Zealand were able to score 42 for one in the PowerPlay overs, 72 for two between over numbers 7 and 15, and only 33 for five in the last five overs.

In contrast, Babar Azam with the support of Shadab Khan led the run-chase as Pakistan scored 44 for two in the PowerPlay overs, 73 for one between over numbers 7 and 15, before scoring the remaining 32 runs in 20 balls.

Fast bowler Haris Rauf continued to strengthen his credentials as one of the finest bowlers in the shortest format when he picked up three wickets in the 19th over while conceding five runs to finish with figures of 4-0-28-3.

Mohammad Wasim Jnr gave four runs with the bat in the 20th over to finish with figures of two for 20, while Mohammad Nawaz picked up two wickets in the middle over at the cost of 44 runs.

In pursuit of the 148-run target, Pakistan lost Mohammad Rizwan and Shan Masood in a space of four balls to slip to 37 for two. But Babar Azam successfully implemented the strategy when he batted through the innings to take Pakistan home.

Pakistan had needed 24 off the last three overs, but Babar and Haider Ali took Blair Tickner to the cleaners by scoring 21 runs before the Pakistan captain finished the match with his 11th boundary of the innings.

Babar slapped 11 fours in a 53-ball 79 not out, his 28th career half-century, but more importantly, he looked at his brilliant best, cresting boundaries from the middle of the willow and nudging and pushing the balls in gaps for ones and twos.

The team’s decision to promote Shadab Khan to No.4 also proved right when the Pakistan vice-captain followed up his 4-0-21-0 with a 22-ball 34 with two fours and two sixes. Together with his captain, Shadab added 61 runs for the third wicket.

Mohammad Nawaz, pushed to No.5, chipped in with a 19-ball 16 with two fours, before Haider Ali belted a six and a four in the two balls he faced to wrap up a comfortable and convincing victory for Pakistan.

Scores in brief:

Pakistan beat New Zealand by six wickets

New Zealand 147-8, 20 overs (Devon Conway 36, Mark Chapman 32, Kane Williamson 31, Glenn Phillips 18; Haris Rauf 3-28, Mohammad Wasim Jnr 2-20, Mohammad Nawaz 2-44)

Pakistan 149-4, 18.2 overs (Babar Azam 79 not out, Shadab Khan 34, Mohammad Nawaz 16; Blair Tickner 2-42)

Player of the match – Babar Azam (Pakistan)

When they talk about "favorites" i don't think anyone brought NZ up. First thing their bowling is not really suitable for Australian conditions. No real pace if they don't play Ferguson. Second of all KW in T20 is a complete misfit like Steve Smith in T20. Eats lot of deliveries goes nowhere.

1.Shan has no place in our current eleven.
2. Fakhar Zaman needs to replace him at one down
3 haider ali needs to play at no.4.
4. Shadab needs to bat at 5.
6. Nawaz should bat at 6.
7. Asif/ chacha should bat 7
8. M waseem to bat at 8.
9. Harris.
10 shaheen
11 Naseem

With four quality out n out quick bowlers n 2 spins we should look to finish teams off at low totals ..as let's face it we would always struggle wiwith our batting even if we Re to stuff them with batters throughout.
So its better to use our main weapon to our advantage.

Ideal possible team available. Batting is not very good but not the worst either and has enough depth and will score or chase atleast 160 8/10 times and with this bowling we will defend or restrict teams to under that score at least 8/10 times. Just make sure Shaheen and Naseem first 4 overs than last two overs of PP by Wasim and Rauf, than 4 by sahadab and nawaz than two by Shaheen and Naseem so 12 overs done than next 4 depend on match ups and which bowlers are having good day, even ifti should be used for over or two vs leftie, tha make sure last 4 or bowled by Rauf and Wasim and tell wasim to focus only on yorkers and wide yorkers no leghnth plz. We have i think most rounded bowling of all teams in WC but how and when babar use them in best possible way will be equally decisive. We just need to accept this reality that we ain't out batting any team in WC with our batting resources so just out bowl them and score just enough that bowlers can do their thing.

The win was great but it was nice to see the much needed adjustment in the lineup and how batters are utilized.

It was the perfect opportunity for Shadab to be sent up with spinners due up and it was nice to see this opportunity realized & used. He destroyed Sodhi out of the attack. If Haider/Iftikhar were sent in as usual, Pakistan may have struggled.

Not a fan of Nawaz being sent up as well. I hope it was to simply give him a longer look to see what he can do because they should be sent up based on matchup situations.

Huge positive was Haider being saved towards the end and having a go from ball 1. That is the Haider we know. He finally started clearing his front leg and smashed both of those balls. For now, I think he is better off in that 5/6th role where he comes towards the death overs and mostly faces the pacers.

Goes without saying but this was a brilliant match by our bowling unit outside of one over.

Logical move to send Shadab up the order. Guess Haider's been told to just go hard at every thing.

Good victory pretty comfortable.Shadab should bat when the spinners come into the attack.

Shaheen and Naseem will come back into the xi.

They probably will. But at least you know the backups now can do the job if form, or injury, or pitch dictate they are needed.

Wasim and Dahani should be given games in long series like this to continue to develop them. Shaheen is a trump card, I haven't seen enough of Naseem at T20 to judge.

This is the kind of specificity of role and flexibility in captaincy/approach that was missing overall vs England. So it's good to see Babar and the management are reflecting and taking some relevant lessons from performances to help improve. Takes a bit of humility and also strength to do that.
