What's new

Pakistan (287/6) beat New Zealand (261 all out) by 26 runs in the 3rd ODI in Karachi

If these two bat for another 7-8 overs, they'll cruise to victory.

Agha Salman underrated

He’s accurate and clever. Will always be handy unless pitch is absolute road which this one is not. In batting he may not be a big hitter but he has got a good temprament and can play according to the situation at a decent clip

Agha's done well today.

Filling in for Nawaz.

Useful bowler when there is some help for the spinners.

Shadab has been steady today too with the ball.

Offered very few loose deliveries to the NZ batters.

Very underrated, but Mohammad Wasim is really consistent with the older ball.

After Rauf and Naseem he has the best stats in this phase.

I don’t completely buy that. I understand life in Karachi may be harder for the average worker. But Karachi also has a huge middle/upper class, no?

Crowds have been poor in Karachi for some time now even though the ticket prices have been the highest in Rawalpindi.

Multan and Karachi have a harsher summer as compared to Rawalpindi or Lahore. Don't know about Peshawar's weather much.
Holding test or ODIs in May in Karachi or Multan don't seem like good decisions but it's just the start of May and this year, the summer hasn't really hit that hard this soon. (AH)

We had a few in this thread talking about below par etc

Seems Pak bowling and fielding did a great job

Seems like a pitch where you have to get your eye in first, and then accelerate (much like how our batters are used to batting)

Definitely prefer pitches with a little more offer to the bowlers. Guess only England has the batting to scale a big 300 here.

As far as I know, it was one person called it sub par. It was a par score and spinners were supposed to play key role to keep Pak in the game. It is the fielding surprisingly that brought Pak back in

Pakistan habbit of making debutants look world class.. if any team wants to give player a debut , Pakistan is the team you send them against

Shaheen first ball suggests to keep the ball fuller. Ball is not easy to hit in that area

Just realised shaheen has 4 left..so has naseem so why has waseem being bowling

Wasim really does bowl some rubbish doesn't he.

So predictable at times.

He loses the plot at times which is a pity. But still the most economical fast bowler in ODI's after Naseem since 2019.

Hope he improves his consistency in length.

Shadab's cameo with the bat really helped take our total up from 275 to 287. Some good bowling by Pak today.

Definitely enjoyed this match more than the first two (apart from Fakhar's batting offcourse)

Henry should have been sent up earlier. He is too good of a batter to come in at 11.

Comfortable win that.

Always in control really once they put up that total of 287.

NZ's weaknesses brutally exposed today.

So 3-0 with 2 games never ever this happened in Pakistan Cricket recent memories

Shadabs cameo glossed over a pretty shameful selfish effort from the main batsmen early on. Yes Pakistan got 287 and won, but they got away with it. Here in karachi you should be getting 300+ with ease.

Babar Azam: Whenever you win a series you feel good. The way we started, it was a slow wicket and we were able to build a partnership, we were thinking 260 but Shadab's cameo took us past 280. The way Shadab and Nawaz bowled, they bowled according to the plan and Agha stepped in after Nawaz's injury. We are trying to chase 350s in ODIs and also defend scores under 300. Yes, we have won the series but we can't afford to relax. We have checked our bench strength in this series and we will keep doing that in the remaining two games as well.

Tom Latham: Probably slowed up a little bit. But a couple of partnerships and things would have been different. I thought the way we were able to adapt, the bowlers did a good job and we were reasonably happy at the halfway mark. We had a good start with the bat) but we were not able to continue that momentum after losing a couple of wickets. We didn't get that partnership after the opening wicket and you need that while chasing. Blundell has been an incredible player and McConchie too had a good debut, bowled well in the middle overs and struck some big blows towards the end.

Imam-ul-Haq | Player of the Match: We (himself and Fakhar) are playing together for the last six years it helps. We knew the Karachi surface won't be the same and we had to assess the conditions, 280-290 was a good score. If Fakhar is going, he will take charge and I just play my game. Myself and Babar were speaking about building a partnership because it would have been tough for the middle order batters to come in and score immediately. Yes, I missed my hundred but as long as the team is winning, I am happy.

Frankly speaking, Pakistan should have made 300+, middle order lacks confidence. Both Abdullah Shafique and Agha Salman are under pressure to perform. 260 would have been an easy victory for NZ. A full strength NZ would have chased this score down as well.

It wasn't a typical Karachi pitch. Pak bowled well too.
Imam and Babar were guilty of getting out when they were set and had started to accelerate especially Babar.
The knocks from Agha and Rizwan were painful to watch here. Nawaz has rarely looked like a batter apart from his few cameos in t20is (that came higher up the order)

Is this the first time Pak has won the first 3 ODIs in a 5 match series against a SENA team?

I do not for my life understand the reasoning of undermining own abilities from the leadership. How can you even think about making 260. THIS IS EXACTLY the reason why I DESPISE phattu captaincy. Oh Shadab the superman did it. This captain can never aim high.

There was nothing wrong with the surface, the entire PP was wasted with pointless dot balls, then we had usual go slow from imam and Babar. Neither batsmen showed any real acceleration, imam was playing for his 100 and then would have played a few wild slots after to try and boost his pathetic scoring rate to make it look like he was being aggressive. Our middle isn't great at all and pretty clueless at pacing an inns batting 1st.

This approach will be exposed in tournament cricket against full strength sides as it has done in the past.

Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam stitched ninth century partnership as Pakistan defeated New Zealand by 26 runs to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series to stay on course to top the ICC ODI Team Rankings for the first time.

The two lads added 108 runs for the second wicket off 121 balls as Pakistan, put into bat, posted 287 for six on a slow surface. In turn, New Zealand capitulated after a solid and positive 83-run first wicket stand to be bowled out for 261 in 49.1 overs.

With the series now in the bag, their first against New Zealand in 12 years, Pakistan will attempt to win the remaining two matches on Friday and Sunday so that they can vault from fifth to first on the ICC ODI Team Rankings. If this happens, this will be the first time Pakistan will achieve the number-one rankings, bettering their number-three ranking they had achieved in January 2007.

Imam and Babar were dismissed in identical ways – both dragging Matt Henry and Adam Milne's deliveries onto their stumps. Imam was the fourth batter dismissed after scoring a watchful 90 from 107 balls with seven fours and six, while Babar struck three fours and a six in his 62-ball 54.

The two had joined hands after Fakhar Zaman, who earlier in the day was named as the number-two ranked ODI batter in the world, was back in the hut after scoring a 26-ball 19 with four fours.

Mohammad Rizwan (32) and Salman Ali Agha (31) added 54 runs off 48 balls for the fifth wicket to give an impetus to the innings, which ended with a 10-ball 21 not out by Shadab Khan. The Pakistan vice-captain hit a four and two sixes, including a last-ball six.

Pakistan scored 82 runs for the loss of two wickets in the last 10 overs, including 46 runs for two wickets in five overs.

In their run-chase, New Zealand raced to 99 for one after 20 overs before Pakistan bowlers put the brakes on the scoring-rate, allowing New Zealand to score 92 runs in the next 20 overs. This meant the visitors needed 97 runs in the last 10 overs and despite fielding lapses, this proved to be a tough task as they managed only 70 runs to be dismissed for 261 in 49.1 overs.

Opener Tom Blundell struck seven fours in a 78-ball 65 with seven fours in featured in three useful partnerships. After adding 83 runs for the first wicket with Will Young (33), he added 30 runs from 40 balls for the second wicket with Daryl Mitchell (21) and 14 runs for the third wicket in 21 balls with Tom Latham (45).

Debutant Cole McConchie scored 64 not out (45 balls, six fours, two sixes) and put on 25 runs (34 balls) for the sixth wicket with Latham, 31 runs (21 balls) for the seventh wicket with Adam Milne, 19 runs (14 balls) for the eighth wicket with Henry Shipley and 12 runs (9 balls) for the ninth wicket with Ish Sodhi.

For Pakistan, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Wasim Junior and Shaheen Shah Afridi took two wickets apiece.

Scores in brief

Pakistan won by 26 runs, 3rd ODI.

Pakistan 287-6, 50 overs (Imam-ul-Haq 90, Babar Azam 54, Mohammad Rizwan 32, Salman Ali Agha 31, Shadab Khan 21 not out; Matt Henry 3-54)
