Pakistan announce squad for 3-match ODI series against New Zealand in Karachi

Another pointless series which we will treat as a World cup. Babar should have been rested, Haris is way past it. RIz should have been rested and Haris should be playing all 3 matches.

Oh yes Riz has cemented his spot in ODIs to be rested

What you dont understand is that our players need competition. Read my posts on why i expected Riz to fall away( and why Sarfaraz needed to be in the squad) from before the SL series and i was the only one. You dont see what i see

I was thinking Agha could share with Sohail in bowling duties with Agha doing the bulk. Your batting looks a bit weak especially the middle order, but I guess we don't have much choice.

Well I wouldn't trust Agha and Haris to bowl 15 overs between them consistently.Ideally I would have included Kamran Ghulam but I prefer Tayyab and Haris over him. This is the best middle order we have and is much better than previews middle orders we have tried.

Would just be one in that case and Pakistan can pull it off. Shadab best skill is vs spin and attacking spinners so there is a case to be made for sending Shadab up the order if there's a need around 25 overs in. Could also send up Nawaz to bat vs spinners if a lefty batter is needed instead.

If they do play guys like Kamran & Haris at 4/5 or Agha at 5, then Pakistan have enough players who can play spin well if you are sending Shadab up but at the moment, they do lack a big hitter at the end and honestly, in this squad, I would prefer Iftikhar over Tayyab who can bat at that #6 position and Pakistan can try to save to attack pacers at the end. Khushdil was fine in this role too and helped Pakistan win matches vs Australia & WI. He was woeful in T20's but its not to be confused witih ODI's because he has been fine in that.

But Tayyab is just as good player of spin as Haris and Kamran Ghullam.I would have picked Haris over Agha.

Rizwan should bat at 6 and if he doesn't perform he should be dropped from the squad.

It’s a decent squad. I’d like to see Tayyab actually get a chance but I reckon Babar will prefer his buddy Harris.

Can we really come to that conclusion given its untried? Tayyab is new, Haris has been brought back out of the blue without any performance to back his selection and Rizwan has been garbage.

Thankfully, we don't know the team yet so might not be this.

It's untried but taking in consideration the pitches and watching domestic both of Kamran Ghulam and Tayyab are good players of spin and both would have been in the xi if Haris wasn't in the squad.

Here I was thinking we will never see Haris Sohail again, this dude had all the technique to succeed but maybe is not ambitious enough to play consistently nor got the fitness to last.

Right so why is there a need for 3 similar player on the roster? Salman offers off-spin which is not something they have on the roster and his domestic SR is better than all of them.

Disappointed that here is no M. Haris.

They are clearly tring to protect Rizwans confidnece.

They may not, but babar and mustaq do, bit of a cold war happening

Babar 100% does because in Rizwan, he has a loyal supporter of his captaincy.

Though, Afridi and co have been after Rizwan for quite a while and have been wanting to curtail Babar’s powers too. Surprised they didn’t choose Mhd Harris

Rizwan is a clutch player but this has to be his last series in the ODI middle order before we try something else. He has not yet adapted his game to middle overs and the WC is too close not to experiment.

If we can't play Rizwan at 7 then we need to pick a wicketkeeper who can.

While opening may be the best use of Rizwan's skills, Imam and Fakhar cemented their places years ago and complement eachother well. I'd rather pick Mohammad Haris at 7 then displace this pair.

Let's see how he does in this series before taking major judgment calls on him. At any rate, its quite stupid to leave out Mohammad Haris from the squad entirely. Especially since he is a like-for-like replacement for Rizwan.

What did chacha ever do to be kicked to the curb like this? I get that he is not exactly the youngest buck in the shed but he there are not alot of batters in Pakistan that are better suited for that No.5/6 spot than him.

This selection committee does not have Rizwan’s back.

Afridi in a presser:

"Alhamdolillah, I am very happy that Sarfaraz came back into the side and has scored runs at crucial moments, but we have Mohammad Rizwan available to us, he is available for ODIs and T20Is, he is our main player for these formats"

"If we ever need due to injury to Rizwan, then we do have Sarfaraz with us but we don't need to mix things up; So, we don't want a situation where Sarfaraz is performing well in Tests but doesn't do well in ODIs and then there is pressure on him"

"As I have said before, we have to keep some players for Tests and some for ODIs and T20Is; Whenever we feel Riz is tired or not performing well, we have Sarfaraz as an option"

Haris averages 27 in this season Pakistan Cup, he doesn't have the temperament to bat more than 10 to 20 balls. It is just not good enough

beggars cant be choosers, look at rizwans odi stats.

Haris is the only keeper we have that can biff it lower down the order

Sarfraz should be in instead of Rizwan..

His batting ability against spin , his current form and experience will come in very handy in India CWC'23

Becouse both Kamran Ghullam and Tayyab have a strike rate close to 100 in domestic in this year.

Both Tayyab and Kamran bat in the top 4 for thier domestic hence why thier strike rate maybe abit lower. Were does Agha bat for his domestic team?

Sarfaraz should be playing as a specialist batsman at the very least. The standout player, man of the series scoring lots of runs at a good pace. How does he not make the ODI team?

Because of Afridi’s weird rotation policy

He's made an extremely strong case to be picked for the ODI team based on his performance in this test series. His impetus has been refreshing and he naturally slots into an ODI middle order better than Rizwan at this point.

Nothing wrong with Rizwan getting this series though. He has been the better batsman and wicket keeper over a longer period. But if Rizwan has another middling output then the calls for Sarfaraz to replace him may end up getting too loud to ignore.

I have been waiting to add my two piece on this squad so:

1. Surprised Iftikhar Ahmed wasn't picked, I think he fits the mould of No.5 in white ball cricket for Pakistan. He has some form behind him despite not playing ODI since the Aussies toured.

2. Haris Sohail has been picked despite his poor fitness history but according to his numbers, he should be picked specially if he plays at No.4. But personally, not a fan of this call-up.

3. Picking the same bowlers again. Pakistan need to do a rest and rotation policy, specially with our pacers. Rauf, Naseem & Wasim Jnr could all do with a break. Shahnawaz Dhani is in form so deserves his selection but needs massive improvement. So it would have been nice to some new bowlers picked and debuted such as Ihsanullah, Amad Butt, Aamir Yamin and Khurram Shehzad would be decent picks/options, specially with Dhani & Hasnain in the squad

4. Really liked the Usama Mir being picked, Pakistan need back-up leg spinners behind Shadab Khan. With that being said, there really is a lack of spin options in this side. Bit surprised to see Nawaz retain, I would have dropped him. Mohammad Junaid, Hassan Khan even Zafar Gohar would have been better options.

5. Picking Tayyab Tahir being picked is a smart callup specially with his game against spin & versatility to open as well as middle order. Also picking Kamran Ghulam who should have played a lot more games for Pakistan by now. Saim Ayub would have also been a smart pick, specially since Shan Masood has somehow found a place in this squad.

6. Lack of a back-up keeper not being picked is surprising. Mohammad Haris or even Bismillah Khan would have been decent picks. Haris should have been picked and start in the line-up. Lack of options is worrying.

7. Fakhar Zaman is picked but his form has been worrying. The Aussie & Windies tour were not good for him. I get his role is to be the aggressor at the top and attack from the get go. But with lack of options in his role, have kept him in the line-up.

8. Would have liked to see Qasim Akram and/or Mubashir Khan picked. Form and potential they both have and being off spinners would have been smart call-up specially with Agha Ali Salman being a little bit suspect with the bat and struggling in the role of No.6/7.

So my potential line-up would be:

1. Fakhar Zaman
2. Imam-ul-Haq
3. Babar Azam (C)
4. Kamran Ghulam
5. Tayyab Tahir/Haris Sohail
6. Mohammad Rizwan (WK)
7. Mohammad Nawaz/Agha Ali Salman
8. Usama Mir
9. Mohammad Wasim Jnr
10. Mohammad Hasnain
11. Shahnawaz Dhani

Would rest Naseem and Rauf due to the injuries to be honest. Would have also selected a Left hand pacer but Mir Hamza is maybe better suited to test right now.

Yes it will be interesting to see how Rizwan performs in the Odi series, I reckon a more cautious approach from him to secure a 50. Liike you said the calls for sarfaraz will be there if rizwan fails. And sarfaraz should definitely be there too, he would do well in the middle order in India in the World Cup. It would have been nice to see them both play, let’s see how things play out for rizwan this series.

Think that we should move on from Haris now, give more of a chance to Tayyab to see what he can do at international level.

My 11

Imam
Fakhar
Babar
Kamran G.
Haris S.
Rizwan
Nawaz
Usama
Wasim
Nasim
Rauf

Would have loved Mohammad Haris ahead of rizwan.

Expected lineup

Imam
Fakhar
Babar
Shan
Rizwan
Salman
Nawaz
Wasim
Usama
Nasim
Rauf

I have a feeling that Kamran Ghulam, Tayyab Tahir, and Husnain will not be in playing 11 for next 3 ODI.

“We have given new players a chance in the upcoming New Zealand series because we want to give Babar plenty of options in order to finalise the combination for the World Cup"

Weird

How is Sarfaraz or Mohammad Harris not a better wicket keeper/batsman option?

Let's hope Riz responds to the challenge brilliantly thrown down by Sarfi. We need to make these 2 battle for every match to keep both on their toes.
