ISLAMABAD: As a goodwill gesture amid tense situation with India, Pakistan Friday announced to release 360 Indian prisoners, including 355 fishermen and five civilians during the month of April.

The prisoners will be released in four batches, scheduled as 100 each on April 8, 15 and 29 while 60 prisoners including 55 fishermen and five civilians will be freed on April 29, Foreign Office Spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal said here at the weekly press briefing.

He said the decision had been taken for 360 out of the total 537 Indian prisoners, who had completed their sentence.

“Pakistan expects that India will reciprocate the gesture to release 347 Pakistani prisoners including 249 civilians and 98 fishermen, currently languishing in Indian jails,” he said.

In response to a question on Special Envoy of US State Secretary Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad pressing Pakistan to deliver more on Afghanistan, the spokesman said, “Pakistan will take every decision in its national interests.”

Ambassador Khalilzad, who is currently in Islamabad, met Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and updated on the recent Doha talks on Afghan reconciliation and intra-Afghan dialogue, he said.

On the possibility of meeting between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Imran Khan following the desire of former, the spokesman said there was no update on the matter.

He expressed disappointment over India’s decision to postpone the Kartarpur meeting scheduled for April 2 and said talks were vital to finalize the modalities to open the Corridor before the upcoming 550th anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak in November.

He said Pakistan was committed for the opening of Corridor as per the commitment of Prime Minister Imran Khan with the Sikh community.

When asked to comment on a statement by Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi that some elements were fanning unrest in Gilgit Baltistan, he said, “It was none other than India which was involved in subversive activities in Pakistan as in case of its spy Kulbhushan Jadhav.”

On a note verbale from the Indian government seeking consular access to Jadhav, he said Pakistan was awaiting the verdict of International Court of Justice which had reserved its decision after completion of hearing of the case.

In response to India’s recent deals with other countries on purchase of weapons, he said Pakistan was concerned about the arms race which could undermine the region’s peace.

He said Pakistan was cognizant of its defence needs and would take every measure to secure its geographical boundaries.

To a question on conferment of Sheikh Zayed medal – the highest award of the United Arab Emirates- on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the spokesman said it was a bilateral matter pertaining to two sovereign countries and Pakistan had nothing to comment on it.

Of late I've begun to wonder if Imran Khan really is free of the Army in Pakistan.

There are too many things happening which suggest, Pakistan will be happy to see Modi come back to power.

Just law taking its own course.

Imran Khan has nothing to gain from enmity with India. Pakistan will only prosper in a peaceful era.

You only see war-mongering from weak leaders around election time. As we all know, there are no imminent elections in Pakistan...

Imran is going the extra mile for India relations, catching the Indian govt off guard many times over.
Smart.

Well played IK.

Showing that not only can we be audacious enough to fly into India with our Airforce in broad daylight and score wins. But with same brutal hand we can show the mature restraint of offering peace.

We have a Cool, calm, fearless approach.

Contrast that with the weak minded weak hearted, and very insecure power hungry right wing fundo across the border.

It is because of a strong and belligerent Modi, that Pakistan is doing extra for peace. You make peace with the strong, not the weak.

As if rule and regulations are followed in the past. Pakistan could have easily avoid that gesture without any consequences.

Soo much for"" law takes its own course"" that innocent pakistan prisoner is killed to death in indian jail.Where was law then ?what measurement have been taken?

And yet Pakistan is releasing these prisoners who have completed their sentence. It is all because of the leadership of Modi. Why do you think this wasn't happening earlier, and happening now when India has shown its bark is worse than its bite.

So you calling India a dog?

I have read several comments online from Modi ****** who actually believe Imran Khan is doing all this under pressure due to great leadership of Modi. I mean these people are on different planet all together.

Imran Khan had same stance about peace with India when Modi wasn't even PM and he is walking the talk when in power but NO it's all due to Modi's greatness :))

Modi will use this as another diplomatic victory which Congress couldnt achieve in 60 years. In another word, Imran is helping Modi before elections.
Imran Khan, on the other end, will happily bowl to Modi.

So I guess a win-win situation for both leaders?

I remember watching an interview of Arvind Kejriwal and he said:

“Pakistan nahi karsaka in 70 saalon main jo Modi saab na kiya hai iss desh kai saath.”

Sums up why IK will love to have Modi at the other side of the border.

Release these innocent fishermen. They are poor people who should be returned to their families.
