Shahid Afridi, the box office trailblazer of Pakistan white ball cricket, believes his "unpredictable" nation can summon the spirit of 2009 and win a second T20 World Cup.

Afridi was man of the match in a nail-biting seven-run semi-final win over South Africa in the tournament 12 years ago where he made 51.

He then starred again in the eight-wicket rout of Sri Lanka in the final at Lord's where he smashed an undefeated 54.

Pakistan's victory came just three months after the terror attack on the Sri Lanka team in Lahore, an incident which sparked a shutdown of international cricket in the country.

"We had that issue of the Sri Lanka attacks on our minds," Afridi told AFP.

"The whole nation was disappointed and frustrated so that win was very much needed.

"The win gave the whole nation happiness and some unforgettable moments."

Afridi famously stormed onto the scene in 1996 when he broke the record for the fastest century in ODI cricket, reaching his hundred from 37 balls.

It was a record which stood until 2014.

Afridi, who played 99 T20 Internationals for Pakistan, thinks recent setbacks can again inspire Babar Azam's team in the 2021 T20 showpiece.

A month before the mega-event, head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis resigned, apparently believing new board chairman Ramiz Raja would sack them anyway.

Then New Zealand abandoned their tour of the country just minutes before the first ODI in Rawalpindi.

Three days later, England also withdrew its men's and women's teams from visiting Pakistan.

"This is Pakistan cricket for you, never ever a dull day," added Afridi ruefully.

"Pakistan can surprise any team in the world. Rule them out at your peril."

In his 22-year international career, Afridi was at the heart of Pakistan's "topsy-turvy" ride in limited overs cricket.

- Heartbreak and drama -

Afridi anchored Pakistan's run to the final in the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007, taking 12 wickets which earned him the player of the tournament award.

Pakistan, however, lost twice against arch-rivals India -- including the final.

"Pakistan gave the best entertainment in the first T20 World Cup," insists Afridi.

"We lost to India in the group match after a bowl-out, which was something very new for us."

Pakistan then lost the final with Misbah-ul-Haq falling to an injudicious shot off the third ball of the final over, with just six needed for a win.

"Misbah brought Pakistan into the game but then we lost by the barest of margins," said Afridi.

Under Afridi, defending champions Pakistan then lost in the semi-final of the 2010 edition in the Caribbean when Michael Hussey clobbered 39 runs in the last two overs to give Australia an unlikely win.

"T20 suits our character," added Afridi. "We have the talent, approach and aggression required for this rapid format.

"It is a format which is loved throughout Pakistan. We won against every team and then every team adopted that style.

"Bowling is now full of variety and new batting techniques have developed."

Afridi insists Pakistan can once again spring a few surprises in the UAE.

"The current Pakistan team is very talented although they lack experienced players. But, as we all know, never under-estimate a Pakistan team!"

Lala spitting facts in bullet points!

:sa

Underestimate Pakistan at your own peril.

As Dhoni is mentor for Indian team.Lala should be appointed as mentor for pak. Yes Pakistan has every chance to win the worldcup.

I don't know, I just don't have that feeling that Pakistan can win the tournament.

The bowling looks decent but the batting is a huge concern - with several players not in the best of form.

Given Pakistan's deplorable spin 'attack', I'd not even expect them to make it out of the group stage.

Really inexperienced? Pakistan has selected a team with so many experienced players like sarfraz. Hafeez, malik who has been playing for 2 decades now..

Given Pakistan's deplorable spin 'attack', I'd not even expect them to make it out of the group stage.
It’s not so bad. Imad has been immense in the UAE and Nawaz was exceptional for Gladiators. These lads know UAE really well.

Shadab should not be played.

Where's Mamoon to remind us how much the seemingly coveted 'unpredictable' tag has actually severely damaged Pakistan cricket over the long term?

Why would you play two left arm spinners in the xi, it’s pointless. You need to have variety in your bowling attack. Shadab is the only leg spinner in the team, you have to play him.

We have to pick between Nawaz and Imad, I’d go with Nawaz.

Much better playing two spinners you can actually rely on, rather than a leg-spinner who is struggling for form since a long time.

Yes we can. No team can go from arsh to farsh then back like Pak can.

I guess, the counter argument is, any team can surprise Pakistan, even the Netherlands.

Just need one win against India or NZ to lift the spirits of the team.

T20 WC of all ICC tournaments is where anything can happen. Pak definitely have as much of a shot as does India/England/NZ do.

Favourites in this format don't mean anything.

I don't get why this is talked about as if it's a good thing.

Just the fact that it's termed a "surprise" (by your own ex-cricketers) when an established international side with a considerable cricketing legacy beats a top team these days should be a matter of embarrassment for everyone involved in Pak cricket. Don't think it's something to be gloated about.

Totally! All this talk about "cornered tigers" & "surprising other teams" -- is precisely what is wrong with the Pakistan cricket

Afridi is right.

Pakistan can never be ruled out. They are usually always the dark horse.

It all depends on how we start the tournament.

This goes for every single team: if you hit the ground running, you'll be much closer to qualification than everyone else.

Our first game is against India. Our objective should be to win it, give it all our effort. If we can't win, we should aim to take the game as close as possible, to avoid NRR deficits.

We desperately need to get Usman Qadir into the mix ahead of Shadab Khan. A leg-spinner should be attacking and should spin the ball.

Secondly, Nawaz should play to give us someone who can spin the ball instead of darting it around. He also has a very good record in the UAE in the PSL.

We need to get out of this delusion that Mohammad Wasim Jr. is some match-winner, he's just a kid who hardly has any credible performances. Shahnawaz Dahani has earned his place on the squad, and should play given his exploits with the short-ball and his bowling style.

The batting order needs to be right. The floater tactic I suggested numerous times should be employed to maximize playing conditions and player match-ups.

We have the basics, but it will take a lot of luck to make sure everything falls into place.

Don't really have any expectations from the team. Other teams are too strong and proven with many match winners. We have a mental block against India. Can we make the most of our underdog expectations against NZ? Afghanistan in UAE will give us a run for our money. Our recent ODI and T-20 history in the UAE is far from impressive.

If you play qadir and nawaz your batting decreases and also I understand that wasim isn't a finished article but he can slog at the end.

Hassan Ali will have to bat at 7/8 if shadab, imad don't play in the xi

My opinion: any Pakistani presently associated with cricket who uses words such as “aggression”, “surprise”, “underestimate”, “on their day”, “unpredictable” should be immediately fired. If they’re part of the system.

If not, they should be systematically ignored.

What's sad about this tourney is that Pakistan should have been one of the top contenders given that UAE has been their home for so many years. It would've been a HUGE benefit for any other side but our team is so bad that even that doesn't give us any edge

What?

Aren’t we 12-0 in T20Is in recent times in the UAE? We built our T20 ranking on the basis of mastering the UAE conditions. The likes of Imad, Shadab etc were instrumental in doing so. They have an edge over most of the spinners in this WC, considering how much top level cricket they have played in this region.

Wasim's bowling is not that good if I'm being honest.

A good batsman can quite easily get 15-20 runs from the boundary balls he bowls. We saw this happen in the West Indies just recently.

Moreover, his form hasn't been that great.

The third seamer choice is either going to be Mohammad Wasim Jr., Haris Rauf, or Shahnawaz Dahani.

For me, Shahnawaz Dahani leads the group; he's been economical and brings a new dimension to our bowling.

From a batting perspective, there is a way to work around the lack of depth you speak about.

Assuming that we play the following top 6:

Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
Babar Azam (c)
Haider Ali
Shoaib Malik
Mohammad Hafeez
Fakhar Zaman

The options for all-rounders are Shadab Khan, Imad Wasim, and Mohammad Nawaz.

Keep in mind, with only the top 6 in focus, you can get 2 overs from Malik and 3-4 from Hafeez if needed.

Now the thing to consider is the value added by Shadab Khan, Imad Wasim, and Mohammad Nawaz.

Nawaz is a gun fielder, and so is Shadab. However, Imad seems to be the best batsman out of the lot and has a lot of international experience as well.

I'd make combinations depending on the wicket if I were the Pakistan team. Nawaz for a dry wicket, Imad for a flat wicket. Shadab will probably play all games unless he gets injured. Qadir is also there but probably won't get into the team.

Hence, you could fill in the team based on the wicket, because I don't think playing 3 pacers will be compulsory in all games.

I am not sure how people are saying Qadir or Dahani can play. They are not in the 15 man squad and are travelling reserves.

They only get into 15 man squad if somebody gets injured from the original squad and that is with ICC approval. So I think you can safely say that Qadir or Dahani will not be playing against India.

In T20 any team can win on a given day.

And despite the chaos surrounding the team selection, Pakistan has put in decent performances in ICC events. Even in 2019, they could have qualified if not for NRR situation despite a disastrous start

In light of this statement from Shahid Afridi, Pakistan has only surprised New Zealand in ICC ODI World Cup 2023. As for the rest, all teams have surprised us.
Did teams really suprise us though? 😂😂

Outcome was super obvious

He forgot to add "On their day..."

Which is abt as much efficiency, luck and professionalism as any mohalla team.
