What's new

Pakistan declare on 302/9 before West Indies reach 39/3 at Stumps on Day 3 of 2nd Test

Negative mindsets bring with them negative results, if tests were 10 days it would still take us 5 days to get to 350

Shaheen hopefully is working on his batting to make it somewhat useful. He is a obviously very impressive at this age with the ball but, he is young enough to start working on his batting a bit as well. In modern era of cricket lower order runs are really important especially in tests

When he was "discovered", I remember Mushtaq Ahmed saying he is an exceptionally talented bowler and can bat well too.

BT Sport commentator is perplexed by Pakistan’s approach!

Hey mate, Pakistani fans don’t even know under that giant tortoise Misbah

Yes he did mention that. Thing is we can somewhat trust Pak experts and ex players with their views and finds on bowling potential but, there talent and potential judgement of batting unless someone is as exceptional as Babar is pretty ordinary. Shaheen has somewhat decent basics with the bat which can be build upon and thats about.

England wasted time making the ground playable in our test series last year and the West Indies didn’t even start fixing the ground until the officials arrived!

You need to have a special eye for talent to scout them.
It's a lot easier and realistic to spot fast bowlers and spinners than spotting a batter cause you can't simply spot a batsman by looking at his cover drive or how hard he can hit the ball. Batters need to be multidimensional to be successful.

But Mushtaq Ahmed is one person that I respect for his talent scouting and even coaching.

I must say these tactics are beyond me i can only assume this is to do with roughing the pitch maybe for nauman as only of he can spin the ball might be a chance

Hmmm, should fawad not be training and practising his batting away from the game or playing domestic cricket? How's he got time to be making dramas? :79:

They cant get shaheen out which shows ita hard to get wickets on this spin is the only chance here

Pak creeping up to 300, some good support from Shaheen, keep it up lads.

Abbas must be one of the worst tailenders in cricket.

Declared. Pak ideally needs to get WI below 200 in this innings then bat quickly to put up a total to defend for WI’s last innings

300 is too low but will need to go out there and do demolition job just like the 1990's.

Another brain freeze by Misbah in declaring. Why not use the opportunity to try to score faster. Complete waste of opportunity one wicket gives unless you expect Westindies to get up twice for less than 300.

Because the selfishness of some of our batsmen to think about there personal glory rather then the teams, if Fawad really cared about the team, he would of tried accelerating once he got to his century

Abbas really good with his dibbly dobblies, lets see some pace though from Shaheen, hope he cranks it up.

Abbas with 121-122 kph in the first over. It was possibly a warm up :smith

At least he made century... Otherwise we could not cross 200

if the team had cared they would have selected him 10 years earlier.
and yes, the coaching staff is part of the overall team.

Abbas needs to get some wickets, he was wicketless in last innings of previous test

Really, we're going to blame Fawad now? Really?

Did you see Rizwan & Faheem bat when the day started? Did you see how slow Hasan was batting? Fawad batted at the highest SR out of everyone on the team, scored a century and people are still going to post this type of nonsense.

Fawad isn't some sort of dynamic batsmen either that has the ability to slog either. He is a smart batsmen who understands his limitations and knows how to play within his own game.

It's very difficult to get a result without enforcing follow on ..If they miss the chance by 20 runs then they should blame that I'll advised declaration..

Chase is scared of facing Faheem. It was evident from first ball of the over that Chase faced.

Umpire Joel Wilson tells Babar "take off the pace bowling or we go off".

Nauman comes on to bowl his first over now.

shaheen shah afridi is turbo elite
we spend all this time fawning over the idea of naseem shah or mohammad amir- we forget we have an actual ridiculous gun of a fast bowler right here right now under our nose

You gotta think had we started on time we would be in a very dominant position, no other way to win this other than shock WI with a low 1st innings total and then enforce the follow on

Can he do it against the top sides?

Fawad Alam continued his meteoric Test resurgence to put Pakistan on top on day three of the second match against West Indies at Sabina Park.

Alam made an unbeaten 124 to help Pakistan to a total of 302/9 declared. Shaheen Afridi (2/13) and Faheem Ashraf (1/0) then reduced West Indies to 39/3 by stumps.

Only 23 years old when he first broke into the side, Alam was marked greatness when he made a second innings Test century on debut in 2009 against Sri Lanka. He would play three Tests that year but had to wait until August 2020 for his fourth.

Since his return to the side, Alam has been quickly making up for lost time, with four centuries since December. Remarkably, his five Test tons to date have come against five different opponents in five different countries.

“I’m very happy right now,” he said at stumps on day three. “Whenever you score a century for your country you feel proud.

“I make things very simple,” he said, reflecting on his career resurgence. “I obey my Dad’s advice. He always motivates me, always telling me ‘you perform and your time will come one day’.”

Much like his Test career to date, the left-hander’s century against the West Indies came in two segments, with the 35-year-old again left to make up for lost time.

Coming out to bat with Pakistan in trouble at 2/3 on day one, Alam rebuilt the innings with captain Babar Azam. The duo put on a 158-run stand, with the skipper reaching his half-century off 96 balls and his partner off 101. The partnership was brought to an end when Alam retired hurt on 76, limping badly as energy-sapping conditions took their toll.

On day three – after the entirety of day two and the morning session of day three were scuppered – Alam returned to the crease following the dismissal of Faheem (26). With Pakistan 218/5 and needing to force the initiative, Alam picked up a boundary through point off just the second ball he faced.

The need for quick runs only intensified after Jason Holder (2/46) accounted for Mohammad Rizwan (31) and Nauman Ali (0) with consecutive deliveries. With four boundaries across three overs from Holder, Alam raced to 99. He would be parked there for the next two and a half overs as fate conspired to starve him of the strike. With a pull off Kyle Myers (0/34) he finally raised his ton, kissing the turf in celebration.

A mix-up with Hasan Ali (9) cost the tailender his wicket but Alam found a reliable partner in Afridi (19), with their ninth-wicket stand of 35 taking Pakistan past 300 before Babar called them in early in the final session.

Hopes of a victory still looked slim for Pakistan at that point only for Afridi to ignite them in a brilliant new ball spell, trapping Kieran Powell (5) in front before castling Kraigg Brathwaite (4) with a beautiful inswinger. The hosts suffered another blow in the 14th over when Faheem bowled Roston Chase for 10 to leave West Indies at 34/3.

Nkrumah Bonner (18*) and nightwatchman Alzarri Joseph (0*) will look to pick up the pieces on day four.

Faheem has really worked on his bowling

Eariler he used to bowl short length and couldn't seam ball away from right handers

I was a little glad he got out, I didn’t want him getting exhausted before the WI innings.

Interesting declaration and if the Windies ground staff do their jobs properly, we should get 2 days of cricket, with early starts. I think that gives enough time for a result.

Pak should look to bowl out the WI by tea at the latest. Victory charge will then truly be on.
