The Pakistan Cricket Board today unveiled its 15-player squad for next month’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and Caribbean from 1-29 June. The side will be led by Babar Azam.

Squad (in alphabetical order):

Player support personnel: Wahab Riaz (senior team manager), Mansoor Rana (team manager), Gary Kirsten (head coach), Azhar Mahmood (assistant coach), Simon Helmot (fielding coach), David Reid (mental performance coach), Aftab Khan (high performance coach), Cliffe Deacon (physiotherapist), Irtaza Komail (chief security officer), Mohammad Imran (masseur), Mohammad Khurram Sarwar (team doctor), Talha Ijaz (analyst), Raza Kitchlew (media and digital manager) and Drikus Saaiman (strength and conditioning coach).

The side was confirmed on Friday afternoon following a two-hour selection committee meeting in Birmingham, which was attended by Abdul Razzaq, Asad Shafiq, Babar Azam, Bilal Afzal, Gary Kirsten, Mohammad Yousuf and Wahab Riaz. Razzaq, Asad and Bilal joined the deliberations through videoconference.

Of the 15 players, Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Saim Ayub and Usman Khan have been picked for their maiden T20 World Cup, while Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim last appeared in the 2016 and 2021 tournaments, respectively. The other eight players participated in the 2022 event in Australia.

“This is an extremely talented and balanced side that has a mixture of youth and experience. These players have been playing together for some time and look well prepared and settled for next month’s event.

“Haris Rauf is fully fit and bowling well in the nets. It would have been nice if he had gotten an outing at Headingley, but we remain confident that he will continue to maintain an upward trajectory in the upcoming matches, as he will have an important role to play along with other strike bowlers in the T20 World Cup.”

Pakistan has one of the most impressive records in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup since its inception in 2007 in South Africa. It won the 2009 event under Younis Khan and twice reached the finals under Shoaib Malik (2007) and Babar Azam (2022). In 2010, 2012, and 2021, it reached the last-four stage.

Pakistan’s schedule of matches:

6 June – vs USA, Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium, Dallas
9 June – vs India, Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York
11 June – vs Canada, Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York
16 June – vs Ireland, Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium, Lauderhill, Florida

Pakistan has been seeded A2 in the first round and if they qualify for the second round, then their Super Eight matches will be as follows:

19 June – vs D1, Antigua
21 June – vs C2, Barbados
23 June – vs B1, Barbados

I feel sorry for Irfan.

I think he brings something different to the Pakistan T20 side.
 
Good squad.

Its better than what they announced for the world cup 2023.

Only issue is Amir cause he is a terrible bowler. But apart from from Amir, rest is a good selection.

naa, the guy has a future.

Its good he wasnt selected as there is no need to play a player that is still bit raw. He still needs to be developed and if he improves he could be our lower order batter in future.

Right now, there was no space for him because we already have Imad, Shadab, Azam and Iftikhar in lower order batting. If one of these guys get injured, maybe we might see Irfan getting called up. But he is a player that will play for Pakistan in the future for a long period.

This is just like how Australia did not select that guy that was making runs in the IPL.
 
Swap Rizwan for Muhammad Harris and I recon you have a decent team

Shadab shouldn’t play ahead of Abrar
 
Lol amir is an impressive addition and will be key. Glad that domestic bully usama mir was left out. Guy is just not cut out to bowl at the international stage

Most likely first round exit. This team will to India for sure and loose any of US/Ireland. Moving to 2nd round will be an achievement.
You can play Kohli, Rohit, Bairstow, Warner, Wasim, Mcgrath...and best coaches but Babar doesn't have any ability to captaincy.
5 useless players Shadab, Rauf, Saim, Azam and Usman.

Finally a foreign fielding coach. Why no substitute? At least take Hasan and Nawaz as comedians and refreshment of mental stress.

Amir lacked performance in PSL. Like if someone like Mohammad Ali was bowling better than him that shows how bad Amir is.

Amir is being selected based on performance of yesteryears. This is just like how we took Younis Khan to the 2015 World Cup even though everyone knew what a terrible batsman he was.

Amir is garbage and will leak runs. He will maybe perform in a few games against minnows and book his spot against a top side and when we lose to that top side.

Pretty straightforward squad, no big surprises.

I'd have gone Usama Mir over Abrar but it's a backup position anyways and Abrar isn't terrible

Amir is the reason for…

1) Shaheen can bowl 3 of his 4 overs in the powerplay

2) Rauf can just bowl death overs instead of embarrassing himself with only 2 fielders outside in the powerplay

Abrar has a T20 economy of under 6

He definitely plays ahead of Shadab.

Shadab is a poor bowler who can’t really bat. The only thing going for him is his ability to change a game with some brilliance in the field
 
Needed Aamir Jamal, and may be Waseem jnr as backup bowler instead of Abbass. Otherwise it's ok
 
The PCB is the last to announce the squad, but I hope Pakistan will not be the last team to exit the World Cup.
 
They should have dropped saim he clearly needs a few more psl’s before selection…

Amaar Jamal should have been there….

This would be my playing XI then change as needed but they need batting till number 8 no matter what. Every time we have won a tournament that has been the case i.e. 1992 WC, 2009 T20 WC, 2017 Champions Trophy.
 
Pakistan isn't one of the strongest teams by any means but they are not that bad to not make it the 2nd round.
 
Azam Khan should not get any games, I dont care if he can hit some sixes. His wicket keeping alone will lose you matches, you need to have a good keeper to do well in tourneys, with him in the team, rizwan gets removed from keeping duties, and that is big loss for Pakistan IMO.

If it wasn't for Rauf it would have been Agha or Niazi most likely.

Rauf is a better, clear role choice.

Good squad.
 
Predictable squad, however not happy with Rauf selection. Aamir Jamal, Arshad Iqbal or even Mohammad Wasim Jnr would have been better options.

Feel for Irfan Khan Niazi as well as Agha Ali Salman.

However PCB has time to change the squad until June something.

This squad is terrible and predictable. I called this squad 3 hrs before it was announced. Literally had a 100% prediction rate?

As for 2023 squad, Literally everything is better then that. 2024 squad is better then 2022 and 2023. But that's not saying alot.

The squad is utter trash, and your Amir is the one bowler who's been bowling better rhenium abass afridi, Naseem and all these tulle bazi, so don't know which Cricket you're watching, but tue prejudice is showing. Tbf shaheen has been bowling Miles better then Amir.

Ali, Wasim jnr, these 2 shpuld have been in for these rauf's level bowlers.

Having irfan, Shafab, Chacha all in the lower order with babar, Rizwan at opening and fakhar at 4 is basically a test line up in a t20 squad?

Before India beat the living daylights out of them in the Asia Cup, they started to announce their playing XI a day before. Everything changed after that game

Should be no complaints on this squad.

There is no player hitting hundreds or continuously taking wickets in T20 who has not been picked.

Pakistan have an average squad in international cricket and they have picked the very best available.
 
This is pretty much the best squad they could have selected based on the players that they have.

I guess you could argue that Agha Salman should have been there. But fact he didn't have enough game time. While Mohammad Haris probably has a bad PSL season to blame for him missing out.

Why is Fakhar there if a Bad PSL rules out Harris?

You pick your players for what they can do on their best day.

Harris missed out because of Rizwan. No one else

At least we are not the fake no 1 team this time around. Get to Super 8 that should be the goal, after that it's just bonus. Maybe USA can kill another one of the better teams.

You can’t make a proper combination with Rizwan opening.

This has been the mistake for the past 4 years. You won’t get this right with this guy occupying a spot he shouldn’t be in I’m afraid.

On what basis did Azam Khan get selected?
Fitness, Batting performances or Keeping skills and agility?
Hitting few 6s Asif Ali style does not make u valid for selections albeit it's a T20 tournament, u need to have ability to score tactically in tough situations, and be atleast a reliable keeper.

if iftikhar and shadab can play for years with no performance to back it up then i see no issue with imad and amir playing.
 
It's the squad that was expected and I don't have much to quibble with outside of Usman Khan being in the squad. Haris was never going to be in it but really, it should be him over Usman considering he's a much better fielder & wicketkeeper, can play top or lower in the middle and gives you more flexibility in the squad.

Fielding wise, I am not sure how it will look if there comes a match where both Usman & Azam have to play.

Ultimately, this is a team that will have to win on the backs of their bowling. There isn't and simply never will be enough batting firepower with what Pakistan have batting wise but the hope is they can bat well enough and their pacers can control the game.

Imad and Amir have ordinary performances while Shadab and Chacha are cheetah performers according to daytrader lol.

If you actually spoke properly about merit you'd realise the worst performers were naseem shah and Shadab and chacha are the 3 who deserved a boot.

Atleast highlight the 3 worst properly.
 
I think its a fairly balanced squad.

The only weak link is Shadab Khan who is in horrible form these days.

It will be a massacre, this is not a championship winning team. They’ve picked players and support staff for a free holiday trip
 
Kudos to the selectors for selecting a world beating young team for the world cup.

Battle already half won by Pak with their strategic move of announcing the squad at the last minute. Other teams have very little time left to plan against the Pak team now. :inti
 
Somehow ifktikhar keeps making the squad with zero performance for Pak team.

When will they realize that you can’t keep picking a player based on domestic T20 performances.

This guy hasn’t won you anything in years!

I would’ve liked to see Salman Agha in his place - at least he has age on his side.
 
Not only the best T20 team in this Cup but the GOAT T20 side.

#1 batter , #1 wicket keeper , #1 power hitter, # 1 pace attack and #1 spin allrounder all in one team.

It's almost unfair to other teams :inti

1) No one from the acc emerging cup was selected besides saim who was amongst the worst performers in that cup. Many allrounders and middle order bats and openers from that cup are far far superior to shadab and chacha level players lol.

2) Saud shakeel, Abdullah shafiq and Tayyab tahir all had good numbers in the PSL especially tayyab but he's no where to be seen. He got an odi call up and was removed despite not getting a single game, simply because he's not a saya representative.

3) Ali the best bowler of PSL is missing for Rauf and Naseem LMAO.

4) Zafar Gohar and Usman tariq, 2 gun spinners who'd compliment abrar extremly Well on slow and sluggish surfaces are missing because their not represented by Saya.

Idkw people are acting like Kakul 29 is all Pakistan had in its resources. This is so dishonest. Shame really.

also Salman Ali Agha is 100x superior to shadab. Sheddy what a parchi.

My squad that I would have selected if I was selector which honestly at this point I'd do it for free as long as I get 100% control.

Openers and No 3 (Pack it with 6 options)

1) Fakhar Zaman
2) Saud shakeel
3) Usman Khan
4) Saim Ayub
5) Abdullah Shafiq
6) Babar Azam

Saud shakeel added if Usman fails + Saud is free flow, plays at a faster rate then rizzu and just more compact and a good six hitter.

Top/ Middle/ Low

7) Tayyab Tahir
8) Haris (Makeshift can be shuffled anywhere from 1 to 7)
9) Salman Ali Agha (Should be the allrpunder over sheddy)
10) Azam Khan( Liability as a keeper but we need that hitting against USA, Canada and Ireland)
11) Imad Wasim

Bowlers

12) Abrar
13) Shaheen
14) Ali
15) Abaas Afridi (Must be used as overs 7-15 bowler only)

Reserves

16) Zafar Gohar (Replacement for Abrar)
17) Amir (Your extra pacer, His form atm should put him here, Shaheen and alinwould be better new ball bowler choices)
18) Aamer Jamal (Get that allround power)
 
Not a lot of expectations with this squad. Batting is weak and to try and compensate for the lack of dynamic batsmen, they picked an overweight slogger and a grandfather. There are some decent bowling options who are most likely going to be ignored for guys well past their best in the name of experience. A lot of embarrassment to come I fear.
