What's new

Pakistan reach 89/1 at Stumps on Day 4 as they look to save the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka

Can anybody remember when was the last time SL didn't play with a left arm spinner in a home Test?

Feel bad for this Jaysuriya guy

He is bowled to death by his captain in every innings.

Why is it we only bat positive in 2nd inns and not the 1st

Pitch is flat agreed but how can all 3 spinners concede 3.5+ rpo
Terrible bowling from Pak which killed any chance of trying to chase

Poor poor stroke. Bat face open and swing towards midwicket. What was that shafique?

Lankan rains aren't to be trusted. They are passing showers that barely last.

Batting long with about 1 more batsman left is nigh impossible. Problem with this mountain of runs is that pressure will never shift.

Hopefully Babar signs off with a hundred to his name in this match

Hopefully, double hundreds from Imam and Babar leading to a historic victory.

Babar proper free flow player in Test cricket

Perfect guy to have at number 3 to set the tone for his side. We were always playing catch up with Azhar and is 35 strike rate at number 3 especially with blockers opening the innings

Pakistan had the chance to restrict SL to a 350 lead last night

Going by this innings so far, that may have not been enough. Massive opportunity lost there

There is 26 overs left today

Pakistan can realistically try to knock off 80 runs more with this partnership

And make a decision tomorrow if they want to go for the runs or play out the draw

Oh man imam is absolutely dud garbage player.
For once in his career can he play a meaningful knock in test.
He has been saved by those garbage runs in pak aus series.

Is light this bad? Bad light stop is always so so awful.
Rain is a genuine reason but not this pathetic bad light.

Record chase looking difficult now with the bad light coming in. :srt

This delay will hurt Pakistan more I recon

They were well on course to get another 70-80 runs or so before the close of play with two set batsmen playing positively

Bad light twice in a row in two days

Wouldn’t rule it out for tomorrow as well

Sri Lanka will have to bowl Pakistan out in 2 sessions tomorrow morning to win this Test it seems

Hope Babar Azam and Imam both gets 100s. Babar is number 3 on the ICC test rankings and needs to get to number one

I am quite suprised at how they are so many fans who are optimistic of Pakistan chances of chasing this. They are batting very positively

Pakistan ideally should not lose more than 2 wicket tomorrow in morning session.

So we survive morning session with 3 wickets down. We will have to grind post lunch session with not losing more than 3 more wickets.

Final session we are 6 down. After 30 minutes of play we lose 1 more.

By that time bad light will definitely impact big time and umpires will have to abandon the test proceedings. + we will have cushion of 3 wickets as well. So good going.

Play suspended due to bad light, so the game lost 26 overs ( don't see any play happening today now).

Pakistan need to bat for 90 overs to draw the test. Very much possible.

But Sri Lanka are thinking Pakistan are looking to win this :))
And it's probably why Pakistan will end up winning this series. Really negative cricket from SL when down 0-1 in a series.

Match is a certain draw.

Pakistan are not scoring 419 runs in a day with likely at most 80 overs left in the game, that too when they're already 1-0 up in the series.

Which makes their decision to bat on for 500 even more ridiculous. Aus and NZ would have gotten to the 350-400 range and declared leaving themselves as much time as possible to get the wickets and draw the series.

Ofcourse, but you have to account for the fact that Sri Lanka are mentally scarred from the record breaking chase in the first match. Test cricket is a mental game and Pakistan have gotten into the head of the opposition after the first match. There was no way Sri Lanka would dare to declare on 350 lead again; regardless of the light.

0-1 or 0-2, makes no difference.

Guess it's different mentalities.

Batting to 500 pretty much sealed a draw given the conditions.

That's true. That chase is the only reason SL were scared out of their minds here.
I'd argue they didn't have much to lose though and should've taken the risk. They've lost the series anyway.

Play to start at 9:45 SL time tomorrow. 98 overs to be bowled

2-0 vs 1-0 makes a difference in points for the Test Championship!

I think Sri Lanka assumed Pakistan would capitulate on the day 4/5 surface given the poor effort from their top order in the first innings. That's why they wanted to reduce all possibility of a loss by getting a 500 lead and then aiming to demolish the Pakistan batting...

It was a gamble that may or may not pay off tomorrow but Pakistan's first innings chase certainly increased the odds of drawing the second game in their favour...

Seems like some Sun and clouds tomorrow. Rain is not happening but lets hope we see some more bad light. Batting on the Day 5 pitch for 98 overs will be a challenge otherwise.

Think they still back themselves to bowl Pakistan out on Day 5 due to how badly Pakistan performed in the second innings on a perfectly good batting deck.

Pakistan responded brilliantly with the bat after Dhananjaya de Silva's hundred helped Sri Lanka set a huge target on day four of the second Test in Galle.

Karunaratne, Dhananjaya frustrate Pakistan

It was the partnership between Dimuth Karunaratne and Dhananjaya de Silva late on day three that bailed Sri Lanka out of trouble from 117/5. On day four, the pair continued to pile on the runs as they dealt with everything Pakistan had to throw at them.

Both the batters were resolute in their defence in their opening exchanges, opting to rotate strike regularly instead of searching for boundaries. Skipper Karunaratne joined Sri Lanka's elite 6000-run club early in the day, becoming the sixth batter from the nation to do so.

Once they got their eye in, the boundaries started to flow regularly. Dhananjaya brought up the 100-run stand for the sixth wicket with a four through mid-wicket. The very next over, Karunratne got to his 31st Test fifty. His fellow batting partner wasn't to be left behind as he too got to the milestone a few overs later.

It needed something special to break the resolute stand and Abdullah Shafique pulled off a stunning catch at short leg to end the skipper's resistance. Dunith Wellalage departed for 18 but a flurry of boundaries from the bat of Dhananjaya meant Sri Lanka managed to add 121 runs to their overnight score before lunch.

Sri Lanka set Pakistan a massive target

At the break, Sri Lanka had a lead of 444 runs but given the memorable chase of 342 Pakistan pulled off in the first Test, the hosts decided to continue batting in the afternoon session.

Dhananjaya de Silva got to his 9th Test century in style with a boundary. At the other end, Ramesh Mendis landed a few heavy blows – including three consecutive fours against Hasan Ali – to take the lead past 500. A direct hit from Yasir Shah ended the centurion's innings as Sri Lanka finally called for a declaration, setting Pakistan a target of 508.

Pakistan start positively

Pakistan started their innings with intent. Both Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq were amongst the boundaries.

It took a great catch from Wellalage to dismiss the in-form Shafique. Despite the wicket, Pakistan maintained a healthy run rate, courtesy of the free-flowing strokes from Imam and Babar Azam, who once again walked out to bat at No.3.

The two batters ensured Sri Lankan spinner didn't inflict any more damage, as they batted cautiously into tea.

Just as the game was approaching the final hour of play, bad light once again played spoilsport as the players were forced off the pitch. No play was possible thereafter as umpires called early stumps.

Going to take a special inning or two for Pakistan to force a draw. Hoping we get another Babar special.

Draw is likely.

Sri Lankan bowlers haven't been very threatening other than Jayasuriya.

I know weather played a part today and Pakistan won the first Test match, but I think Sri Lanka delayed their declaration for far too long.

Did they really need a lead of over 500.

Mohammad Yousuf speaking to the press:

"We will see how the first session goes tomorrow, if we do well in it, then we will try and chase the target"

"Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam played well in the last session and I hope they will play the whole day tomorrow like that"

"Pakistan batters are playing their natural game in this innings and its a better way to play cricket; If you play to your strengths then most of the times you will be successful"

"We've done the same thing against Australia in the 2nd Test in Karachi, we had a similar target, 506, and Babar Azam got 196, Abdullah Shafique scored 96 and Mohammad Rizwan hit 104*; That was a good game"

"We look forward to tomorrow and the way Babar and Imam have played so far, tomorrow will be a good day for us and should be interesting"

"The boys are playing well and I have never been in favour of going against the natural strength of any batter, and this was the same when I played as I would always try and play my natural game"

"During the 2nd Test against Australia, we had a team meeting and it was decided that we would chase the 500+ target; Babar would hold one end and we would go for the charge from the other end so that we could score at an average of 5 or 6 and chase the target; But unfortunately Babar was out for 196, so then we took then game towards a draw"

"If we look at the first innings then you will note that we had soft dismissals, if Babar and Abdullah had not lost wickets then I feel we would have scored around 400 in the first innings as the wicket is a good one for batters"

"Based on the way these 2 are playing, even tomorrow there can come a situation where we could try and play at a quick pace and try and win the game"

"I always say that your intent should be to score runs, because when you do that you hold back on the good balls but score runs where the opportunity is there and this happens because you have a positive frame of mind"

"We will have to play good cricket tomorrow and have the intent to score runs"

"The Sri Lanka batters scored runs comfortably in both innings"

"Pitch has been good for batters but tougher for the bowlers; In the first game, atleast there was some sharp turn and bounce but on this pitch, the batters have a good chance to score and once they are set things start to get easier"

"Based on how we played at home against Australia and how we played in the first Test against Sri Lanka where we chased down a target of 342 in tough conditions, against the bowling of Jayasuriya and other spinners; The team is playing very well and the team combination is a good one"

Any pressure due to WTC23?

"The boys are not under pressure and are enjoying the game but they are taking on the challenge and want to perform to a higher level as they did against Australia"

This pitch is dead. Pakistan should be able to draw this match.

Pakistan aint chasing down 400 runs in a day :)) - Even if we have a good 1st session, we wont get close. When has pakistan ever scored 400 runs in a days play? let alone on day 5.

If they manage to draw it, which would be a big accomplishment, regardless of the dead wicket, how much credit should Mohammad Yousuf get for the resilient batting? I've been wondering about this. The way they played in the second innings of the first test was not typical Pakistani batting.

Day 5 pitch

Bowlers like jayasuriya and Ramesh mendis is not gonna be easy for Pakistan

Yes.

But, Ramesh hasn't been very consistent. Also, he is an off-spinner (not very effective against right-handed batters).

Jayasuriya is the biggest threat.
