It has more to do with the luxury lead they have. They simply can afford to play defensive and still get a wicket. They've gotten pretty close today by essentially doing nothing. When you have a leg slip in place and are bowling around that channel that's a sign they couldn't be bothered much.

Exact scenario happened in first test. Pakistan rolled over SA. then Pakistan built a big lead. And SA played much better the second innings but still lost. I think the pitches are like that
