Congratulations to Azhar Ali. His hard work paying off, been a tremendous couple of years for him in Test format.

Needs to kick on here and not waste this start.
 
Through sheer hard work and determination,Azhar Ali has developed into a world class test match batter. Credit to him and credit to PC for investing in him.
 
Excellent effort from Azhar, no.2 best batsman in the world after Smith; scores runs all round the world and doesn't crumble when the going gets tough. Congrats champ!

I remember the "glory days" of the 1990s and 2000s that people go on about. We shelled home Test series to the likes of Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka (twice), England, India, Australia and South Africa. We weren't playing entertaining cricket either in those shambolic defeats.

Not excusing this turgid batting performance, but I don't know why Pakistan fans love to engage in self-hatred and bash achievements we should be proud of.

Amla,Root,Williamson are better than Azhar.
 
Need a Sarfraz 100 off 80 balls if we want to win this match.
180-200 lead at end of day 4 might give us a chance to win.
 
Flat pitch. No atmosphere. Average Bowlers and Batsmen. Negative mindset by batsmen. This is what is killing the format. UAE consistently produces the most unattractive test cricket. I love test cricket but why would anyone on the planet want to watch this?

That's a frustrating time to lose a wicket. Shafiq should have kicked on as he got through a very tough start this morning. Need Azhar Ali to get a big score and Azam to carry over his form from the World XI series.
 
Looks like Babar will face his first ball from Herath. Should be interesting.
 
Shafiq threw it away after getting set. If you cannot score big in these conditions, where the pitch is so docile, then when will you ?
 
Azhar is truly solid. One of the best test batsmen around.

He scored his average i.e. 39. This is his ceiling. His career average will remain around this.
 
Unfortunately with MisYou going,Asad will be playing for long as a EXPERIENCED player,he has struggled a lot this year and his overall average suggests that too.He actually can learn a lot from Azhar who is a similar type of player but way better than Shafiq

He should be dropped. Doesn't score big and doesn't score fast to have an impact.
But Pakistanis will never say a word. So much hue and cry over Fawad and selection of Haris but not a word on Shafiq ? Are 50 matches not enough to see what a player is capable of?
 
This has to be one of the most boring test match an absolute snooze fest, very bad publicity to test matches, don't know what curator was thinking, u just had to prepare pitch with some life not concrete slab like these, these pitches don't do any justice to cricket, flat pitch, no crowd, I am disappointed for pak fans they certainly deserve better than this.
 
Pakistan need to get Fakhar Zaman into the Test team. The top-order is simply too one-dimensional. Fakhar has a higher FC average than both the openers playing this game. Ridiculous.

Any time you question shafiq's place, his fans will refer to his useless centuries vs SA and Australia which failed to win any matches for Pakistan. More often than not, he scores soft runs and doesnt play decisive knocks like Azhar and sarfaraz do or younis and misbah used to do. I won't say drop him already, but his places definitely should be under the scanner.
 
1st boundary on the 126th ball. It's disappointing watching this team bat on this pitch.

I give up. This is pathetic cricket and surrender. Better watch some movie.
 
Very one-dimensional batting. The openers are too similar. Need to get a more aggressive player like Fakhar in. Also not sure whats happened to Shafiq. He used to go at a decent rate but looks short of confidence.
 
Experienced test batsmen Azhar hitting first boundary after 120 balls in a first innings (also not a match saving situation).. Both Azhar and Asad need to play like batsmen who can play the shots when they get loose deliveries or bad balls...Very conservative approach to scoring runs...
 
SL are with a whole new team. They should be proud of such a meek surrender by such an overrated Pakistan test team at our home.

strike rate doesnt matter..he is the type of bat and do it with his patience...after that SA tour he raised his game,,,,,how many hundreds root has scored in asia despite playing so many matches,,...get ur facts right,,,,i would not say azhar is better but root has his own weaknes....chill man

Azhar has scored numerous 3s from some good shots that would've ordinarily gone for four. But the Abu Dhabi outfield is pathetically slow.
 
Shafiq scores as many runs as his current average of 39 today which is a fair reflection of his inconsistency in recent times
 
We only scored 170 runs all day today.. Mashallah :14:
 
Night watchman shahab and dad's dream both scored 50s at 30 odd strike rate. Mashallah.

I tend to agree. I suspect PCB needs the money for all 5 days so delivers pitch instructions to suit but this type of match too often harms the format.

Pakistan side batting in the only sensible response to 400+ on this pitch- you need to grind 400+ to stay in the game, otherwise a loss is on the cards.
 
Other teams are aiming to score 350+ in a day while our tuk tuks can barely manage to cross 200
 
We definitely need someone like a Fakhar Zaman in our test side. These tuk tuks will run us into the ground

Our RR has been slow but no team has scored 350+ in a day in Abu Dhabi, even the "aggressive" teams that Michael Clarke and Brendon McCullum led.
 
Isn't there any punishment/ban by ICC on playing slow (In terms of Run rate) in Test...?
