What's new

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka | 2nd Test | Dubai | Oct 6-10, 2017 | Day 5

Shafiq has never been a finisher going back to 2011 WC semi-final, he gets set and then gets out.

With Sarfaraz gone its probably over.

How many matches has Sarfaraz finished off ? There is always a first time , he needs support from other end as well

Well Sarfraz finished Champions Trophy match against Sri Lanka.

Don't recall Shafiq finishing anything, the match in Brisbane also he was well supported by Amir who hit 48 and batted with him for day 4. Shafiq batted till day 5 and got out giving Smith led depleted Australia a comfortable win.

Well it was a case of one wicket for Sri Lanka and so it has proved. Need a freak innings from Asad to win this from here.

New ball, Amir gone, more than twice still needed than the top 5 wickets mustered, and probably more pressure than the last three wickets can handle.

can believe that was given, i could tell 100% it was outside off straight away with my crappy stream

Amir really should be averaging 20 in both formats with the batting talent he possesses.

Selfish tactic by Shafiq. Exposing the tail enders.
This should be Amir's last test like Babar. Both are not test material

Shafiq's single on 2nd ball was a poor decision - I was about to write that, when Amir hit the boundary. Asad should take on spinners and back tail to block pacers.

Instead of Yasir, I probably would have gone for Abbas & ask him to block from one end, actually I would have done that before Amir as long as Dilruhan was bowling.

I don't care if Shafiq wins Pakistan the game, we all know what happens with Shafiq.

Time for selectors to drop him and give opportunities to others. He's been given opportunity after opportunity and is still too timid, he only comes up with these knocks when games out of reach and his spot is on the line.

Do not be deceived.

To be honest you cannot drop a guy if he wins you a match almost single handedly from such a situation. No team would do it not even Australia.

Surprisingly Lankan pacers actually got better of new ball than any PAK pacer. Probably, bowling fuller. Asad takes a single on 1st ball again!!!!!

He's done this several times before to save his spot. He'll be useless for the next 20 Tests and talk of dropping him begins again. This lad only scores runs when games are lost and he has zero pressure or expectations on him. He is a mental midget.

You cannot shield the tail when you have 4 wickets left and 92 runs to get. You have to take every run on offer and hope the tail wags.

You didnt get me. he should be dropped if he doesnt win it. If he does win it, he should stay.

Shafiq keep exposing tail enders. He haas to extends his limit in order to win big matches

Stop complaining about the singles. Shafiq is doing this properly. Yasir is not a complete mug. Besides, there is too much to get for Shafiq on his own... you can't turn down free singles just because you feel you have to finish it on your own. These singles add up very quickly if SL are looking to keep Shafiq off strike.

The best pressure chasers have always realised this. Look at VVS Laxman vs AUstralia in Mohali. He constantly gave Ishant the strike since the target was a long way off. Once target got to 20-30 runs, he stopped taking those singles. You have to trust the tailender here. There's still 3 wickets left.

Not in 1st 15-20 minutes - Steve was the best player with tail & he backed his partner lot; after shielding few overs so that they get the confidence. Here Asad is giving responsibility from 1st over.

I've seen with this Shafiq so many times that there's no point in even bothering.

It's clear he plays more freely when there is no pressure. Test cricket isn't like this 90% of the time.

Well he hasn't won the game from such positions before so if he does (a big IF) then you can't really drop him. But yes if he gets out now this knock will be a case of doing more harm than good.

These runs are going to hurt you in the long run, this innings has saved him his spot for another 20 Tests.

No we have only seen him get pakistan close to target. He has never won a match for Pakistan from such a situation. That doesnt deserve any backing.

However if he wins Pakistan this match, then he should stay as per merit.

The tailenders will only get confidence when they put bat to ball and survive. Not going to gain confidence just by standing at the non-strikers end. And you can't compare Australia's tail with Pakistan's. Steve Waugh had Lee, Warne, Gillespie to bat with. Only McGrath was a dud.

Agreed. Waugh, VVS, Bevan in ODIs, even Lara in the 153* vs AUs trusted Ambrose a lot. You have to trust th tailnder.

Steve Waugh was arguably the best pressure player ever lol, I get your point but comparing him to Asad is funny :D.

So much hate for Shafiq. Forget past for now. At this moment in time he’s out there for our team and he’s the only hope.
Let’s get behind him and then after match discuss who should get dropped.

I hope Yasir gets his pad out of the line of the stumps while defending against Herath. Also must look to hit out.

Oh crap, for some reason I thought this was starting at 12:30. :mv

Steve had some of the best partnerships with Mac, Mac (gill) & Funki Miller; I don't take other 3 as tail-ender.

I am talking about process, not ability. Standing at 110 with your best form of life time, set batsman can't take a given single on every 1st ball of over - chance favors the prepared mind; I don't think after Sarfraz was out, PAK's think tank re assessed the situation - in that case they won't have sent the last lefti in line up when Dilruhan was bowling.

Shah and Shafiq really are trying. Rotating the strike a lot which is a good idea and prevents pressure building even more. If these two get the runs required below 30 then things will get tense

Chandimal is a pretty good captain.

He is -I am sure Sarfraz would have kept Dilruhan on since he had a 5for & allow Yasir to swing with the spin or block with extended front pad; now he'll need to use his bat against Herath & Asad is helping the plot nicely.

You're ignoring the magnitude of runs that Pakistan have to get here. If the required runs were about 30-40, then there was a case of turning down a single off the first 2-3 balls. Not when you require more than 90 runs. Plus you have to trust your partner that a number 8/9 batsman has it in him to last 5 deliveries in an over. Amir and Yasir aren't complete duds although Amir is against an off spinner.

This is going to be slow and painful to watch. Had Shafiq been the one to get out and not Sarfaraz it may have not been so boring
