In the complex geopolitical landscape of South Asia, Pakistan has long harbored aspirations of achieving strategic depth, particularly with respect to its western borders. This concept, often tied to national security strategy, envisions a degree of territorial buffer or influence in neighbouring countries, particularly Afghanistan, to secure its own borders and ensure its survival amid perceived threats. However, recent events, such as the attack on the Jaffar Express in Balochistan, and the growing cooperation between militant groups like the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), have exposed the flaws and contradictions inherent in Pakistan’s strategic policies. The persistent instability in its western frontier can be attributed to significant mistakes made by Pakistan’s civilian and military institutions.

Pakistan's civilian institutions have been ineffective in addressing these issues. Successive civilian governments have failed to implement meaningful political reforms in Balochistan or address the grievances of its people. While military operations have been employed to quell insurgent activity, these have often been heavy-handed and exacerbated local resentment. The lack of proper dialogue and engagement with Baloch leaders has made it difficult for civilian authorities to foster an environment of trust and cooperation. Instead, Balochistan has been subjected to a cycle of military crackdowns, which only deepens the sense of alienation among its people.
