Panamagate Case: Supreme Court disqualifies Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in unanimous verdict

Let's not forget most of Lowari Tunnel construction credit also goes to Musharraf as well that's one of the reason Mush still got votebank in Chitral. The most difficult digging part of the project was completed back in early 2009.

https://www.dawn.com/news/985338

I visited this place in 1990 as a tourist and people were talking about tunnel even then.
That's true Mush started this project but NS restarted this project.

my point is that there was no point of anti-NS slogans when he is completing a mega project for your region. even he knows that he would not get political benefit from it.

Quote from DAWN:

The tunnel is located on Nowshera-Mardan-Mala*kand-Chakdara-Chi*tral National Highway (N-45). It was completed at a cost of about Rs27 billion. Work on the plan started in 2013 when the incumbent Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif took over the government.

This is one of the mega highway projects initiated in 2005 during the government of Pervez Musharraf. But work was stopped at times due to a shortage of funds, and at others due to a change in design and security reasons.

Inauguration of the main 8.5km-long tunnel and a secondary tunnel of 1.9km will provide all-weather connectivity to Chitral with the rest of the country.

How dare you contradict a guy that doesnt like NS because he is corrupt but somehow always finds himself on threads to defend him against accusations of lies and corruption.

And how will we know if guy is really from chakdara, drosh, dir, qilash or from chitral.
if we cannot trust most respected newspaper from pakistan then we should avoid believing anonymous claims.

Yes I do not like NS. But if he comes to my area and inaugurate some life changing mega project then should not I show some basic decency?

is it too much to ask from pti nary baaz supporters?

No newspaper in Pakistan is respectable. Primary sources are always more accurate.

There is a very good reason why Musharaff's party won ONE seat in 2013 elections and that was in Chitral, ONLY because of this tunnel so it's not even a question who should take the credit when people themselves gave credit to Musharaff.

Another reason is that in that area army (chitral scouts) has great influence.and that sole winner had requested NS to join pmln.

Anyway, I am not taking any credit away from mush.
I am just stating what's reported in dawn.

I heard they would be unsealing the JIT envelopes today, any news on what might be on them ??

Possibly further details about Sharif investments in Europe.

JIT also requested some information from Switzerland and Luxembourg, so might be some responses from there.

I just wish they comply and assist the Pakistani authorities that are running the investigations. Reports are coming in that the British Virgin Islands have already declined the JIT for any assistance on the matter. Clearly we now will see Nawaz pulling in all international favors to save his hide......

We need to work around it or this might just make sure that PMLN gets away with it....

Did their faces tell you they were PTI supporters?

fwwtay kaatnay ka shwaq hamaray the so called PM ko wesay ha.and anyone opposing his corruption and jhoot automatically becomes pti supporters, because they know only pti is against corruption..bus feeta kaataty raho .and again i will say by my words that major part of the tunnel was completed before 2013..........

Seems like Nawaz Sharif will survive.

We will also look at the disqualification of PM - SC

From wiki:

Work on the tunnel began on 8 September 1975, inaugurated by Pakistan Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, but was stopped in 1976 on the pretext of lack of funds and other development priorities. Work on the tunnel did not restart until September 2005.

Construction on the tunnel was originally begun in September 1975 as a railway tunnel, but work was stopped in 1976 due to non allocation of funds.[7] Construction resumed in September, 2005 initially with an expected completion in three years, but that time was extended after it was decided to convert it to a road tunnel.[7]

Construction vehicles transited the uncompleted tunnel in January 2009,[8] but work was stopped due to another change in government.[9] The tunnel was temporarily open in the winter of 2009-10 when the Lowari Pass was closed.[10] In the summer of 2011 construction briefly began again,[9] but soon ceased. By October 2011 SAMBU JV had removed all of their construction equipment.[11] The National Highway Authority cited as cause various disputes about proper payments not being made to the SAMBU construction company.[12] By Fall 2012 work had restarted,[12] but winter public access was restricted the following winter to three days every week (2012–2013), and to three days every two weeks the next winter (2013–2014).[9] The tunnel remained uncompleted, most of the interior of the tunnel lacks its shotcrete lining, retaining walls or a metalled road.[9] The tunnel is also not yet properly ventilated.[9] The situation was not improved by the winter of 2014–2015.[13][14]

In 2015, the government approved additional funds for a revised PC-I of the Lowari Tunnel, and indicated that it should be completed by October 2017.[7][15] Under the revised budget, it was expected to cost Rs 18.13 billion.[16]

And sadly it's working in many majority of Punjab even if NS survive using this method this will set a new precedent and people will use same card to cover their crimes "Logo ne humain 5 saal ke liay vote dya he".

More like humain her jurm kerne ka license dya he...

I dont think that's worrying as their personal jurisdiction includes disqualification of the PM. I think this case is over and in shallah, PM will get disqualified soon.

courage my friend. I guess these judges are scared of the mafia and the consequences they will face if they give decision on merit.

don't forget JIT members shifted their families outside after many threats from the mafia.

from lying to forgery to hiding assets if this doesn't disqualify our prime minister then no one in future will look at these courts with a hope.

Don't mind this approach, but I can see why some people are mentioning judges won't do anything. Something of this magnitude has never happened in Pakistan. I see judges have days where they absolutely smack PMLN around and then there are days like today, a bit more moderate.

I just hope in the end, we don't have the classic "muq muka" case and justice prevails.

True and IF that happens they should better shut down the courts release all the criminals from jails and implement jungle ka qanoon.

We can only live in hope. We really are at breaking point, our economy is a mess, industry is dying slowly, energy crisis is continuing and anarchy is rampant in many parts of the country, he really needs to go, and so do his children/brother.

By the way, is PMLN a cult of personality of the Sharif's or is it more embedded into Punjabi culture. Will PTI/Imran Khan stand any chance of winning the election or merely a few more seats if Nawaz/family are disqualified?

Let me say this, if 2013 elections were not rigged, PTI would have attained a lot more seats from Punjab. We seen what happened when we had a re run on the opened seats. PTI can win Punjab but need to break this mafia and introduce biometric voting.

Nobody is sure whether the current three judges will decide the verdict or will the two members of the original bench will also be invited to give input.

Nobody is sure whether the current three judges will decide the verdict or will the two members of the original bench will also be invited to give input.

This sort of bureaucracy needs to be cleared up once the head of the proverbial snake is removed. It just leads to confusion, rumour and conjecture, which in turn lowers the confidence the common man has in the judicial system.

Heard news that Ch Nisar is holding press conference on Sunday and may resign from interior ministry.

Oh the irony.

First Let's see what the SC does with the PM and his family in light of all the irrefutable and overwhelming evidence of corruption...

If Nawaz Sharif does not get disqualified then it will be a huge setback to Pakistan. Then the honest government employees will not stand up against corruption again like the current JIT members did. Who would think that "honesty is the best policy" when in return the Prime Minister and all his party and government people badmouth you in public, you have to move your family members outside the country as their lives may be in danger, and still the supreme court reject your honest findings? Very sad state of affairs for a country which was built by one of the most honest person Indian subcontinent has ever produced (Jinnah) and his successor Liaquat Ali Khan who gave up all his wealth for Pakistan and died as a poor person. Kahan ki bulandi aur kahan ki pasti now

What's really interesting is that 2 most senior judging including the next CJ disqualified these crooks without even JIT based on the lies during 126 days of hearing while the other 3 are finding it hard to disqualify them even after all these evidences and JIT?

This makes no sense. I am fearing the worse... SC doesn't seem like their keen on this

NS will be disqualified, hint was that the judges urged today to the defendants to give money trail and stressed that over a year has passed without a money trail. Besides that NS can easily be disqualified for his work visa in Dubai under 62/63. No proof is needed for that. Everyone needs to relax and hope for the best now, no point stressing. Imran Khan tried his best and the case could not go any worse for Nawaz then it has!

Hero’s welcome for JIT members at Islamabad Club

ISLAMABAD:
The damning JIT report may have drawn ire of the powerful ruling bigwigs who hardly spare an opportunity to reject and ridicule the investigation document and slam its authors, the opinion of the general public on the issue seems different.

At a time when the PML-N leadership has had its guns blazing, with party stalwarts boisterously calling the JIT report a part of ‘conspiracy’ to send the democratic order packing, at least two instances have surfaced lately where the JIT members have been accorded a hero’s welcome and that too by the general public.

On Tuesday, when SECP representative in the JIT Bilal Rasool visited the Islamabad Club to do the gym, he was warmly welcomed by the members. People present there recognised him and hailed his ‘bold’ contribution to the probe and his co-authoring the ‘daring’ report despite the serious life threats and the professional challenges the investigation panel reportedly faced.

A member of the Islamabad Club, Rasool used to visit the club’s gym. However, he stopped visiting the club after being assigned the job of probing the Sharif family’s offshore properties as his security, along with that of other JIT members, was increased.

On his first visit to the club after a while, Rasool was pleasantly surprised at the reception he received by the club members who took pride in shaking hands with him, exchanging greetings and taking selfies.

Separately, JIT Chairman Wajid Zia received a similar warm welcome on a visit to the Islamabad Club.

Zia, who came to the club in Rangers protection, was easily recognised by members of the club as well as staff.

A senior government official reportedly kissed the JIT chief on his forehead for “doing a great service to the nation”.

Zia was quoted as having thanked those present there, and saying that the JIT members, irrespective of all pressures, did their job to the best of their abilities and conscience to bring out the truth.

“We have done our job, the rest is up to the superior court,” he referred to the crucial Panamagate case in the Supreme Court.

Cant believe some journos have totally lost it and are trolling IK by comparing Document from Sussex with the documents submitted by Nawaz Sharif. Even a noob can tell Sussex is a well known and established club and not some firm which does not even exist ( case in point documents provided by some firm in nawaz sharif's case). Common sense is not so common sometimes...

People were so excited and happy when ""Justice Ifthikar" was restored due to NS's long March.
PTI supporters will know the real price of jit in 2020.

If NS gets disqualified under 61/62, then we should expect this article to be thrown to IK and Co.

Case about attackING ptv etc, will pick pace.

Would love to see IK and PTI kicked out by SC and standing in front of JIT if they go down to the level of PMLN/PPP and found guilty of looting taxpayer's money.

Justice Iftikhar was restored because of Kayani not NS. Nawaz ditched the opposition alliance for a 100th time on a call from Army Chief.

PPP and PMLN are trying their best to amend articles 62, 63 of Constitution through their new so called electoral reforms coming in next few days. And guess what PTI already rejected it so they are not running away from 62/63.

Already so many active cases, attack on ptv etc, is good enough and it will remain on slow burner for time being.

All parties agreed to do the long March, but NS was the main character and Kiyani played the usual role of middle man/agent/broker to negotiate a deal between NS and Zardari (through yousaf raza) and at this NS made announcement that he got Iftikhar restored.

IK and others complained that NS never took them in confidence.
And Ifthikar remained "loyal" to NS.

IK also ditched JI and TUQ few times. So he is not so different to NS in this aspect.

Imran Khan fails to submit complete financial record in SC

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday failed to provide a comprehensive history of his finances to the Supreme Court, which is hearing a petition seeking Khan's disqualification over the non-disclosure of assets, ownership of offshore companies and receiving foreign funding for his party.

Khan, in a written reply to the SC, admitted that he had not been able to procure all documents required to substantiate how he came to own assets held in London. Naeem Bukhari, Khan's counsel, submitted the PTI chief's reply in court.

The reply stated that Khan had played county cricket for the Worcestershire County Cricket Club (from 1971) and Sussex County Cricket Club from 1977 to 1988. It said the latter club does not keep records for more than twenty years, which is why the record of his employment and the money Khan made during his association with the team was missing from statements he submitted before the court.

The reply further stated that the flat in London was mortgaged in 1984 and an initial payment was made for 61,000 pounds sterling against the total cost of the flat, which was worth 117,000 pounds. The flat's mortgage was to last 20 years, but was settled in 1989 (within 68 months) after Khan completed all payments due.

The reply further stated that Khan had financed the mortgage from money he received from Sussex and the Kerry Packer cricket series, while money he received for playing for the New South Whales cricket team in Australia (years 1984-1985) was used to finance interest payments on the mortgage.

"The money I made abroad was through legal means and there was no money laundering involved," Khan said in his written reply.

On July 13, the SC directed the PTI chairman to submit financial details for his London flat by July 25.

The SC's registrar office, on July 21, had also sent Imran Khan a notice for not submitting documents that the court had called for.

Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar had earlier commented on the matter, saying: "People who call others thieves should be able to provide their own financial details in court."

What's wrong with Dawn? Read this on facebook and most ignorants without even understanding a bit compare it with Nawaz Sharif and claim no difference between both as they failed to provide record. One can't provide a single document about assets he owns overseas worth billions and hd multiple governmet positions and other has provided every possible document except county record from 3 decades ago for property bought overseas with money earned overseas.

Soon enough these media outlets will have to answer for being funded by taxpayer money. Contempt of court hearing on 25th against Jang/Geo will be just the start.

IK brought a property for €66000 and his earnings from Kerry packer alone were more than that let alone county cricket so even if he can't show exact payments I don't think he will get disqualified for that as he can show buying that property was not beyond his means

Dawn is turning out to be a massive trash paper. Not surprised as their name was near the top when it came to government $$$$$ after Geo/Jang.

Aitzaz Ahsan had a very good interview today, explained the past soft corner of judiciary towards Sharifs and stated the current situation very well.

SInce when and who are the perpetrators? Pakistan doesn't need to get nuked to be wiped when it has leaders like NS who will do it torturously slowly.
Nawaz Sharif has build up his image in such a way that he is considered more acceptable to international powers especially USA, China and India than other politicians of Pakistan. Look at how India lobbied to USA for Nawaz Sharif in this case and now USA has stopped the military aid to Pakistan.

I would not go as far as to say global conspiracy. Its just that Nawaz Sharif and family have been in power for so long that outsiders feel more comfortable dealing with him plus he has shown that he is business friendly and would sacrifice national interests for personal interests.

ISLAMABAD: When the Supreme Court begins hearing the contempt case against a major newspaper group on July 25, the interesting issue would not be what the newspaper group says in the SC but how deep the court digs into its Pandora's Box.

Why this box is a can of worms can and should be revealed because of the SC directive that all records of advertisements given by the governments to the media, both electronic and print, should be presented before the court.

If this is done, as some reports say data has already started to come in, it would be the first time the real face of the media would become public.

More importantly the nation would know how billions upon billions of taxpayers money has been used, or misused, by the governments, both at the Centre and in the provinces, and to whose benefit.

There are many players and stakeholders who would be going through sleepless nights during these hearings which could turn into an actual trial of the media, not a media trial of others.

The issues that could, and would, be raised include the role of the advertisers, meaning the governments in Islamabad and in the provinces, the middlemen or the advertising agencies who distribute these ads of billions of rupees and the recipients who publish or run these ads in newspapers and on TV.

More importantly, because this is all public money, the questions that will have to be answered will include details of the criteria on which these billions of rupees ads were dished out; who would be held responsible for the decisions; what public interest these ads served and whether this money was used for political purposes.

My media friends say the most sensitive information that is supposed to come out in the SC trial would be the role of the advertising agencies as government have used this money through these agencies for years and no one has ever focused on how this was done and who benefited.

The governments, in the centre and the provinces, could easily try to wash off their hands by stating in the SC that these ad campaigns were made for information of the public about what their elected governments were doing and that it were the agencies which were actually responsible for selecting who gets what share of these lotteries.

This is where the catch is. The criteria that the agencies will say they used is supposed to be based on the ratings and viewership of the TV channels and the circulation of the newspapers. This may on the face of it appear to be a fair procedure but what the SC needs to find out, and will, could be a lot dirty.

The agencies will have to prove that they gave away this money to the most deserving but it would be a tough ask. If they shift the blame on the advertisers, it could become not just embarrassing but may be a violation of rules or laws as well, leading to legal consequences.

Friends in the agencies say there are numerous cases when millions of rupees worth of ads were ordered to some TV channels with high ratings but others with similar or better ratings were ignored because they pursued policies which were critical of the government.

So ultimately if it turns out that billions were given on the basis of which sections of the media supported, or opposed, the government, it would be alleged that a game of intense favoritism was played with public funds.

Because billions of rupees are involved, this could become a 'Panama trial of the media' and it can only be assumed that except some groups or individuals in the media, a majority may not like this dirty linen to be washed in public.

I have seen some lists and figures of how much each TV channel received in the last few years, or few months, as federal government campaigns but I would leave it to the SC to bring out these details before the public. But what I can reveal is that numerous instances will come to light, if proper questions are asked by the lawyers from those who were issuing the ads, those who were middlemen and those who received them, in which favoritism and misuse of power will be evident like daylight.

Some campaigns, friends say, were issued at just two hours notice in which only the name and dates of the project that was being inaugurated were changed and channels were asked to insert these ads, sometimes at the cost of commercial advertisers who had already booked the space in advance.

One important factor about government ads that would come out is that TV channels charge almost three to four times higher rate from the government advertisers as compared to normal ads which makes government ads immensely attractive and a high revenue earning prospect.

So in many cases, millions were given away to favourite TV channels in just one day and the content of the ad was just the announcement that some big guy will cut the ribbon of some big project, at times for the 3rd or the 4th time because politics of that day needed that publicity.

It will be argued that some of these campaigns were for public education and awareness, like using polio drops, combating mosquitoes, sending their kids to schools or pointing out suspicious activities of terrorists, etc, but how badly these funds were misused for political purposes will also get exposed.

The lists of ads doled out is a mind-boggling reading. In some cases amounts in excess of Rs 200 or Rs 300 million were given to TV channels which do not figure in any list of top 5 or top 10 popular channels. Likewise some very popular but critical channels were seen at the bottom of these ad lists.

If the SC judges go into these details and are able to find out what has been happening, they will then have to give directions to fix a universal criteria of how this public money should be used and distributed by the governments.

We know that development funds have been used in the past by ruling parties by allocating a fixed amount, in millions, to MPs, but it is also known that opposition MPs also received these funds. In the case of the media as well, billions are involved and there is no check on how these billions are being used or have been used.

That is why this first trial of the media beginning on July 25, could and should become the 'Panama of the Idiot Box'.
