New and silent voters are PTI strength bu i don't thing they are going to appear in by elections so PTI and IK will have to work really hard to convince them because for voter it doesn't matter who wins this seat and remain MNA for next 9 months. Nawaz changed his GT road plan at least 3 times based on different advises and now he is back to going through GT road (SS and Ch Nisar were against this decision). According to report they will make sure all the serkari mulazims are there for grand welcome of mian sahab on GT road and MNA/MPAs are also assigned duties to arrange big numbers to show NS power around GT road.

I agree on principle as we cannot have democracy without free and transparent elections.

However, when big change is introduced, one of the following two approaches is adopted:

1-big bang (this is normally adopted when option #2 is not available as huge risks are associated with it)
2-phased (this apprpach provides the flexibility for various challenges. There will be big learning curve for ECP, PO and for voters. )

So, I would welcome this phased approach (I anticipate that there would be numerous issues/bugs even with this approach, but will give ecp the opportunity to learn from mistakes)

Btw, AAP party complained that voting machines were programmed to rig in Delhi.
And even trump complained about rigging through invalid voters in presidential elections.

So we also need a culture, where losers accept the defeat and respect the mandate of citizens.

Nawaz Sharif files 3 review appeals against Panamagate verdict in SC

Ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday filed three separate appeals in the Supreme Court to review the Panamagate verdict that resulted in his disqualification.

The three review appeals, in reply to the petitions filed by Imran Khan, Sheikh Rashid and Sirjul Haq, were filed by Nawaz's lawyer Khawaja Harris. The five-member apex bench that took the unanimous July 28 decision last month will hear the review petition.

Harris has also submitted relevant documents concerning the iqama — a United Arab Emirates work visa — that led the judges to declare Nawaz "unfit to hold office".

Nawaz, through his appeal, has argued that the July 28 decision should have been given by a three-member bench since Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and Justice Gulzar Ahmed's jurisdiction had expired after their dissenting judgement on April 20.

"By signing the the final order of the court" on July 28, Justice Ahmed and Justice Khosa "have actually passed two judgments in the same case, which is unprecedented in judicial history," reads the appeal petition, a copy of which is available with Dawn.

Five more appeals are expected to be filed soon by Nawaz's sons — Hassan and Hussain Nawaz; his daughter Maryam Nawaz; Captain Safdar; and Ishaq Dar.

'Still my PM'

Earlier on Tuesday, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq said that he still considers Nawaz Sharif his prime minister, and that the entire country was waiting to welcome the former premier.

"In my heart, he [Sharif] is still the prime minister," declared Sadiq while speaking to reporters after attending a meeting of top PML-N leadership in Raiwind.

The meeting, chaired by Sharif, was also attended by Hamza Shahbaz, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif, Railways Minister Saad Rafique, and Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, among others.

"Nawaz Sharif talked about his future strategy. He does not plan to create any friction between the institutions but he will fight for his right by taking his case to the public and protect the sanctity of their vote," the speaker told the reporters.

"The meeting also discussed ways to strengthen the Parliament and democracy; we talked about what legislation needs to be passed, by taking all political parties on board, in order to protect the sanctity of the votes cast by the public."

NAB summons ex-PM Nawaz Sharif, sons tomorrow

LAHORE: In what could set the tone for investigation into serious allegations against the Sharif family, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) summoned disqualified prime minister Nawaz Sharif and both his sons in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills case on Friday (tomorrow).

A NAB official confirmed to Dawn on Wednes*day Mr Sharif and his sons — Huss*ain and Hasan Nawaz — had been asked to appear before investigators in Lahore.

He said this would be the first of many cases that NAB was going to probe — an act which could have repercussions for the Sharifs’ politics as well as for the country’s political scene for long.

He said the case had been referred to the Rawalpindi NAB on Aug 11 and the decision to summon the Sharifs was taken by NAB chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry.

Independent commentators say the probe into large-scale corruption allegations against Mr Sharif and his family could set the standard for accountability in ******tan for all times to come.

On July 28, a five judge larger bench of the Supreme Court while disqualifying Mr Sharif under Article 62(1)( f) of the Constitution had asked NAB to file four references in the Rawalpindi accountability court within six weeks on the basis of the material collected and referred to by the Joint Investi*gation Team (JIT) as well as that already available with the Federal Investi*gation Agency and NAB.

According to the court order, NAB has to file a reference against Mr Sharif; his children Maryam Safdar, Hussain and Hassan Nawaz; and son-in-law retired Capt Muhammad Safdar relating to four upscale flats in London.

Another reference against Mr Sharif and his sons about Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment and one regarding 16 other companies were also ordered. The companies are Flagship Investments, Hartstone Pro*perties, Que Holdings, Quint Eaton Place 2, Quint Saloane, Quaint, Flagship Securities, Quint Gloucester Place, Quint Paddington, Flagship Develop*ments, Alanna Ser*vices (BVI), Lankin SA (BVI), Chadron, Ansbacher, Coomber and Capital FZE (Dubai).

The fourth reference has to be filed against Finance Minister Ishaq Dar for possessing assets and funds beyond his known sources of income. The official told Dawn that NAB would take up the reference against Mr Dar on Aug 23.

However, Mr Sharif had filed a review petition before the Supreme Court against his disqualification and also moved a separate application with a request to suspend the final verdict in the Panama Papers case as long as the review petition is pending.

It said that the SC directions issued to NAB to take forward the JIT’s investigation, what evidence to look into, how many references to file before which accountability court, and monitoring and supervision of the investigation and trials by an SC judge was in violation of the principle of trichotomy and Articles 25 and 175 of the Constitution, as well as due process and the right to a fair trial, as mandated by Articles 4 and 10A.

Moreover, direction to the trial court to decide the references within six months is likely to prejudice Mr Sharif’s case before the accountability court, especially when the Constitution does not confer the Supreme Court any jurisdiction to sup*erintend and oversee the pro*ceedings of subordinate judiciary, the petition maintained.

Within a month more, PMLn will start realising the fact that PMLn, Govt. and State can function without MNS even.

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court’s five-judge larger bench, headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, has concluded the hearing on Sharif family review petitions against landmark July 28 verdict on Panamagate.

After concluding the hearing, Justice Khosa said that we will now deliberate over the matter and decide how to proceed and what to do, adding that the judges will reassemble at 11am.

Earlier, Salman Akram Raja, counsel for Nawaz Sharif’s children, adopted the arguments given by Nawaz’s attorney Khawaja Haris. The bench has assured him that the trial of the ruling family will not be prejudiced against them.

Renowned lawyer Salman Akram Raja had filed the review petition on August 25 on behalf of Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz, sons Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz and son-in-law Captain Safdar, as he requested the top court to suspend operation of its July 28 order.

Hearing a slew of petitions filed after the emergence of the Panama Papers, the top court’s five-judge bench disqualified Nawaz and directed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to file references against the former PM and his children in an accountability court. The court had also ordered that one of the members of the bench oversee the proceedings.

According to the petitioners, the final order of the court is ‘coram non judice’ as the five-member bench did not have jurisdiction to oversee the proceedings in another court.

They claim that the court’s directions to NAB as to how to proceed with the probe, what evidence to collect, how many references to file and before which accountability court as well as its order to monitor the investigation and trial of the references is violative of the principle of trichotomy of powers.

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the review petitions filed by deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his children and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar against the apex court's Panama Papers judgement of July 28.

The court had reserved its verdict on the review petitions after the lawyers for the petitioners completed their arguments earlier in the day.

A five-judge SC bench, headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, had taken up the petitions seeking review of the court’s July 28 judgement which disqualified Nawaz Sharif and ordered the filing of corruption references against Sharif, his children — Hussain, Hassan and Maryam Nawaz — son-in-law retired Captain Mohammad Safdar, and incumbent Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.

"For reasons to be recorded later, all these review petitions are dismissed," Justice Khosa announced.

With the rejection of the review petitions, Sharif's disqualification as a member of the parliament remains valid. The Sharif family and Dar will now face corruption references filed by the National Accountability Bureau(NAB) in the accountability court.

The apex court on Friday also disposed of an application filed by Awami Muslim League (AML) leader Sheikh Rashid against NAB, accusing the latter of failing to file an appeal regarding the Hudaibiya Paper Mills case in accordance with the SC verdict.

The court decided the application after NAB prosecutor general Waqas Qadeer Dar stated before the bench that the NAB chairman had approved and ordered the filing of an appeal in SC to challenge the 2014 decision of the Lahore High Court to close the Hudaibiya Paper Mills case.

"The learned prosecutor general [...] has undertaken that the requisite appeal shall be filed before this Court within the next seven days without fail," the court's short order said. The bench subsequently disposed of the application after Sheikh Rashid did not press it following the NAB prosecutor's assurance.

Talking to reporters outside the court, PML-N leader and Minister for Information Technology Anusha Rahman said the court's decision to dismiss the review petitions was a cause of "disappointment" for her party.

She said the court should have reconsidered its verdict to disqualify Sharif for not disclosing the salary he was entitled to receive from Capital FZE. She expressed the fear that Sharif family will not get a fair trial in accountability court if a SC monitoring judge oversees the trial proceedings.

Barrister Zafarullah Khan said his party "believe in the system and Constitution of Pakistan" and will therefore accept the verdict despite not agreeing with it.

Representing Sharif's children and son-in-law Captain Safdar, Advocate Salman Akram Raja earlier in the day argued against the SC judgement. He adopted the arguments given by Sharif's counsel, and presented some of his own.

He said the court had ordered the filing of a reference against Safdar in relation to the Avenfield properties in London, but his client had no connection with the flats and "neither [had] such link emerged from the JIT [Joint Investigation Team] report".

Raja said Safdar had signed the trust deed executed between Maryam and Hussain Nawaz regarding the properties as a witness only.

At this, Justice Khosa observed that the JIT report had stated Maryam to be the beneficial owner of the two offshore companies which owned the London flats.

Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan said the British Virgin Islands authorities had deemed Maryam to be the owner of the said offshore companies and therefore it is incorrect to say that Safdar, Maryam's husband, has nothing to do with the flats.

The lawyer argued that his client's fundamental rights will be violated due to the filing of the references. But Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed assured him that no compromise will take place on the petitioners' fundamental rights and right to a fair trial. He reminded the lawyer that his client was free to cross-examine the witnesses during the trial.

The Sup*reme Court had on Thursday asked Sharif to have trust in the court, which had "always come to his rescue" in the past.

“There is no need to get apprehensive merely beca*use one decision has come against you,” Justice Asif Saeed Khosa observed while addressing senior counsel Khawaja Haris Ahmed, representing Sharif.

The observation came when Khawaja Haris expressed the reservation that his client might not get a fair trial in the accountability court since everything in the corruption references against Nawaz Sharif and his children had been attributed to the Supreme Court.

“When I go to the trial court I will have to assail the manner the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) conducted inquiry against my client, which will be difficult due to the July 28 Supreme Court judgement that carries tags like ‘godfather’ against him [Nawaz Sharif] and because everything in the reference had been attributed to the apex court,” the counsel said.

The verdict against him is that he failed to declare his salary. There are few cases referred for further proceedings and these cases will have verdicts in next 6 months and then we will know if he's clean or not.

At the moment he is disqualified by 5 judges and tomorrow, the ultimate court will reject or confirm 5 judges' decision (I am paraphrasing but i think IK also called this election as a referendum about the verdict)

I hope, wish & pray that Justice prevails. If Sharif's earnt money through corruption, if Sharif's did tax evasion, if Sharif's did money laundering than I hope they are convicted and heavily punished.


But I don't see PML N or Sharif's politics dying in next 25 years atleast because Like Bhutto is loved & worshipped even today in the same way Sharif is loved & worshipped though at a smaller magnitude.


I was in primary school I guess when Zardari got jailed on multiple corruption charges. PPP got wiped from Punjab. People said now Bhutto has died & PPP is history. Sharif got 2/3rd majority in 1997. He looked mighty.


After more than a decade in 2008 Elections which for me was more fair than 2013 Elections who won ? PPP. PPP made gov in Centre and who won in Punjab under Musharaff's nose ? Nawaz Sharif.


If there are fair elections than how many seats will PML lose combining both MPA & MNA seats ? Atmost 50 ? 60 ?


Ok if there is gross rigging in favour of PPP than PML N will get wiped off for the time being. 5 years ? 10 years ? Will people forget Nawaz & Shehbaz ? Really ?

Was Pervez Elahi's performance poor ? Dollar remained static at 58-60. We got massive foreign aid for supporting USA. But when Nawaz came back what did people do ? They saw Pervez Elahi as someone who stabbed Sharif in his back post Military Coup and they once again voted Sharif whom they had not forgotten.


Zia thought He would crush PPP through launching Sharif. He failed & PPP exists even today. But in the process He did huge blunder of Creating another Bhutto. A Sharif whom only 1000 people knew is today loved, supported & voted by Millions. Harsh Reality & it won't change because of the national circumstances & situation which masses face day in and day out.
