Panamagate Case: Supreme Court disqualifies Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in unanimous verdict

Too good to be true. Somehow, Sharif’s will slither their way out of this. This is Pakistan afterall.

I feel sorry for Capt Safdar nobody is talking about him in the media and even he missed to put his name in thread title at PP :/

Congrats to Pakistanis, always a great day when politician thieves get punished. Wish India takes a leaf from Pakistan's book, our judiciary is hopeless.

Capt Safdar is the Noora equivalent of a road man. Nobody cares that he has been jailed, not least his own wife.

Watch this paid drama by PMLN guys :)))

This is lenient on NS to be honest and actually works in his family's favour. He's not winning this election so that's half a decade gone anyway. He will bide his 10 years fighting an extradition battle in the UK living on his riches, lets not forget there's no extradition treaty with the UK! While the court has done it's bit pronouncing a sentence it has no bearing for British judiciary. That's an uphill fight for the government and will not be an easy one!

Come 2025 the biggest news will be Maryam Nawaz's return to Pakistan after an exile! The awaam have very short memories! In the mean time expect NS to grow a beard and go all out religious, the ploy always works. By the time the military leadership is in conflict with whichever future government is in power, expect them to help NS come back and create ruckus.

If i am not wrong she is out of politics for 17 years! first she need to serve 7 years and than after come out she can't hold any govt office for 10 more years

The next elections are slated to be in 2023. Even if she comes back in 2025 and things go as you are predicting she will have to wait till 2028 for the next elections. That is 10 years of zero political activity. Pretty hard to win elections with 10 years of exile.

True but with the fines (£10m in total) and more importantly the seizing of the properties will cripple them completely.

Also, I suspect this isn't the end of it. There is still more to come in the way of corruption charges.

bro thats peanuts, they own nearly 30 properties outside of the ones we know about..

Are these two in Pakistan?

Who is Capt Safdar? Maryam's ex? Years before i had read something of a scandal between Safdar and Maryam ir am i wrong?

Captain retired Safdar is Maryam thiefs wife.

Safdar is here in Pakistan but the other two thiefs are in London.

A great day for justice and Pakistan.

Nothing to say. Just happy that a corrupt mafia-esque party's leader is sent to jail.

Kudos to Pakistan's justice system :ik

yes that's right.
but any money paid will have to be accounted for.
unless they have £10m of tax paid money lying in a Pakistany bank account, they can't just produce the money and say 'here you go'.
They will have to show which properties they sold which then opens up another can of worms.

The bottom line is that if you've cheated you can run but you cannot hide forever. It will all come crashing down around them. Especially if the institutions carry on strengthening.

Kudos to Pak judiciary! Indian judiciary really needs to take a leaf out of their book.

Congratulations everyone!

Looking back at my first post in this thread i am glad i was proved wrong by courts...

Yes when we started, we had no faith in our system despite glaring contradictions and blatant lies.

Great outcome in the end :)

Excellent, been waiting for this day! Mubarak ho meri sari Pakistani bhaiyo ko!

A couple of questions:

Why are Maryem and Safdar only banned for 10 years from politics? Shouldn't it be permanent? Also, does the 10 years start after the 7 years she served or from the day her jail sentence starts?

I really hope they return to Pakistan and face their sentences. What a sight that would be, them getting arrested? I just hope they don't use this as political propaganda, I can see the people of Pakistan falling for it, "yaar chalo inkhi saat pehli hei bohooth bura ho chuka hei..kya patha ho badal gei ho" crap. Our people have short memories and have big hearts in terms of forgiveness/sympathy, especially in such cases.

Don't think they are coming back, let us see.

Now it's time to go after Zardari and co. as well. Great job by Pakistani Judiciary! Hopefully a stepping stone to a corruption free country.

I hope this is only the beginning of a great era for Pakistan.

So according to Dawn 'corruption was not proved against Nawaz'

:))

So what they are saying is Yes Nawaz had hidden assets, he lied about ownership, produced fake documents and his children were found owning billions they can't justify but no proof the money was earned through corrupt practices.

THIS IS MASSIVE LIE!

As per NAB rules, if there are hidden assets that children can't justify then it is considered the public office holder owns those assets even if it is not under his/her name.

Never thought the day would come to read such a headline :))

Congratulations to Pakistan for this unprecident turn of events.

NAB Lahore team is in Islamabad for obtaining arrest warrants of Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and his son-in-law. NAB team will inform KP police so Safdar is expected to be arrested on Monday while Maryam and her Dad will be arrested from airport if they arrive.

The former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for corruption in a verdict likely to influence the general election on 25 July.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Pakistan’s anti-graft court, ruled that Sharif and his family laundered money in the 1990s to pay for four luxury apartments in Park Lane, central London, drawing on allegations that resurfaced in the Panama Papers leak, published by the Guardian and others in 2016.

The court also sentenced Sharif’s daughter and presumed political heir, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, to seven years’ imprisonment, fined the family £10m and ordered the seizure of the Avenfield properties.

“The Pakistani nation and the PML-N [Pakistani Muslim League (Nawaz), Sharif’s party] reject this decision,” Sharif’s brother, Shahbaz Sharif, told reporters. “This is a dark chapter in the history of this country. There was no solid legal evidence in the entire case.”

Sharif, who has been at the sickbed of his wife, Kulsoom Nawaz, in London, did not attend the hearing. The court earlier denied his request for a week-long delay to the verdict while she is on a respirator after treatment for throat cancer.

In July last year, the supreme court removed Sharif from office and ordered the NAB trial, before barring him from politics for life. The 68-year-old claims his legal troubles are the result of a military-backed conspiracy; allegedly in revenge for attempts to assert civilian control of foreign policy and put the former military dictator Gen Pervez Musharraf on trial for treason. It is expected that Sharif will launch an appeal.

The punishment of Maryam, who received an additional one-year sentence for presenting forged documents in court, may see control of the party shift to Shahbaz Sharif, who has pursued a more conciliatory approach with the army.

Imran Khan, the former cricketer and leader of the main opposition party the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has accused Sharif of maligning Pakistan’s institutions to save himself. “Adiala jail is ready for you,” he said before the verdict, also claiming that Sharif was using his wife’s illness to “emotionally blackmail” voters.

The verdict’s electoral impact will depend on Sharif’s response, according to the columnist Mosharraf Zaidi. If he returns to Pakistan and goes to jail, the “visuals” would likely add to sympathy for the PML-N, providing a “cherry on top” of the party’s argument that its leader has been unfairly victimised, he said. Should Sharif stay in London, the party may suffer; with Sharif absent from the campaign trail, the pollsters Gallup revealed on Wednesday that the PTI had closed the gap to a single point, with support for the PML-N dropping to 26% nationwide.

Sharif has long struggled to explain how the Avenfield flats came into his family’s possession. Family members initially told different stories. During the NAB trial, his defence claimed that a Qatari investment fund gave the expensive properties to the family to repay a debt owed to Sharif’s father. Commentators last year mocked a letter from a Qatari prince apparently testifying to that deal as a rabbit pulled out of a hat.

Still, analysts point to a variety of events that suggest a campaign by Pakistan’s deep state to hurt the PML-N ahead of the vote. The process has left “little doubt that the system is geared to get Mr Sharif”, said Zaidi. The NAB has arrested several PML-N members in recent weeks and in May its chairman was ridiculed for ordering an investigation into Sharif over spurious claims in a newspaper article that he laundered almost $5bn to India.

Unlike i have no desire to defend criminals. If IK does wrong, i will criticise and if he steals, i will be the first to call for his hanging. Your desperation is due to you spending on all the emotional capital defending a corrupt money launderer and then refusing to accept you are wrong.

Why are there people still defending a corrupt criminal who is destined for jail? :(

Pakistan won't get better until such people change.

Congratulations to All Pakistanis around the world . I hope every child all over Pakistan gets to understand the importance of what has happened on this auspicious day in Pakistan,. I hope every Pakistani child gets to know who this great leader Imran Khan is and what he has achieved for their future . I hope all parents and teachers educate our children of the importance of today's events. 06 July 2018 should be etched in all the history books in Pakistan for our childrens to celebrate.

 and who cares if he does NOT become PM? As long as someone better than NawaZardari become PM we will be happy. Do you think we waste all this time discussing Pakistan politics for Imran Khan? We support him because he is comparatively better option, if there is better option then we would support that option.

Junoonis have the right to do bhangra, but it has been a farcical decision.

The verdict basically asserts two things:

The decision basically says two things.

A) No corruption has been proven, hence Nawaz Sharif was acquitted on that front.

B) It establishes that since it is difficult to believe that grandpa was funding his grandsons, we have to presume that it is their father’s dirty money.

All evidence produced by the defendants was rejected and the judge called it ”suni sunai”.

ISLAMABAD: The Natio*nal Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday failed to arrest any of the Sharifs after the pronouncement of the accountability court’s verdict in the Avenfield property reference despite having received an original certified copy of the judgement.

While former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were in the United Kingdom when the court in Islamabad awarded the sentence, his son-in-law retired captain Mohammad Safdar was present in Pakistan yet he was not taken into custody for unexplained reasons.

When contacted by Dawn, the additional prosecution general of NAB, Akbar Tarar, said: “There is no need to get any special permission from the accountability court for the arrest of Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law retired Capt Safdar.

“It is a common law that once the court declares someone a convict, he/she has to be arrested at once and there is no need to get specific permission for seeking their arrest warrant.”

The NAB’s additional prosecution general’s statement is quite clear, but it raised the question as to why Mr Safdar was not arrested after the court decision.

“If Nawaz Sharif, Maryam and Safdar had been present in the court at the time of announcement of the decision, they would have been arrested on the spot,” Mr Tarar argued.

Asked then why Mr Safdar had not been taken into custody by NAB, Mr Tarar said that he would be arrested soon.

A source in NAB said the bureau would seek court permission on Monday for their arrest and would also request the interior ministry to place their names on the Exit Control List (ECL).

The source said: “NAB will implement the orders of the Accountability Court, Islamabad, to arrest Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz after the issuance of arrest warrants as per law. Retired captain Safdar, who is in Pakistan, will also be arrested after obtaining arrest warrants.

“NAB Lahore’s team of investigators, led by Imran Dogar, is in Islamabad to obtain arrest warrants from the accountability court in order to implement the court order.”

A source in NAB told Dawn that for any arrest in under trial cases the bureau had to submit an application before the relevant court for it. “Therefore, NAB will seek permission for the arrest of Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Capt Safdar on Monday,” the source added.

NAB would also request the interior ministry to get their names placed on the ECL within the next two days so that Capt Safdar might not escape abroad, another source revealed.

The bureau had earlier too requested the interior ministry for putting the names of the accused persons in the Avenfield property case on the ECL, but officials of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government were reluctant to do so.

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday announced that it has completed all formalities required to arrest former premier Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz as soon as they arrive in Pakistan.

The announcement came shortly after Sharif accompanied by his daughter Maryam Nawaz held a news conference in London and stated that he will return to Pakistan soon.
NAB arrests Nawaz’s close aide in Ashiana scam

“NAB has completed its plan to arrest Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz at the Lahore Airport. Capt (retd) Safdar, who is in Pakistan, will be arrested on Monday (July 9),” reads a statement issued by NAB.

It adds that NAB has received a certified copy of the judgment in the Avenfield reference and it will be implemented in letter and spirit.

Earlier, a NAB Lahore team led by Investigation Officer Imran Dogar arrived in the federal capital to obtain warrants of arrest of Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Capt (retd) Safdar from Islamabad’s accountability court.

Sharif strikes a defiant tone, announces to return ‘immediately’

NAB said that it would again request the Ministry of Interior to place the names of the Sharif family, who are handed in punishment by the accountability court, on the Exit Control List (ECL).

Respect the courts and the verdict stop insulting the judges and courts! (that's what you told us in that panama thread)

It is a question I am pondering over at the moment. It is a good and timely thread because a lot has been said about the the lock-down and both sides have had their say, no need of flogging a dead horse anymore.

As far as the innocence of the Sharif Empire is concerned, matter of fact is that they are not innocent and we all know about their corruption, but as far as the decision of the SC is concerned, your guess is as good as mine at the moment, because a lot of factors will play a part.

However, for the sake of democracy and in respect of the constitution, we all should respect the decision of the SC.

Things are getting interesting now and I hope the findings of the SC are made public, because that is the only way we can be sure about the accountability of the decision. More than anything, people of Pakistan at this time deserve transparency.

I have full faith in the judiciary system and I hope and pray that they make an impartial decision, even if it means the end of Nawaz Sharif.

and now this guy is making fun of courts what a uturn.

Nawaz Sharif has only 10 days to surrender and appeal against the verdict. Failing to which he'll lose the right to appeal. So expecting him to come back soon

What do you think will happen? There is no way he is staying in jail for the next ten years.

What do you think will happen? There is no way he is staying in jail for the next ten years.

I think he will get arrested from airport and he will happily do that to gain sympathy vote on 25th july and secure her daughter future in politics but than he will go to high court for a bail. If he don't return before 25th july than he will lose his own die hard voters and they are not gonna come out to vote on 25th.

It's not confirmed but i heard it's not possible to get bail in a sentence exceeding 4 years?

I think Shahbaz is playing and securing his future? I was expecting huge protests in central punjab.

So NS and Maryam want people to come onto the streets so they can keep their stolen wealth. As stupid as Nooras are, even they are not that stupid.
