b0000 ... cricinfo isn't covering it !

they cover the South Africa "A" match in India .. but not the senior team ?

Former Pakistan opener Taufeeq Umar will get a chance to reclaim his Test place when he leads a Patron's XI side in next week's three-day warm-up against touring South Africa.

The 26-year-old left-hander is being given a lifeline to resurrect his career as Pakistan search for a dependable set of openers for the two-Test series against South Africa.

The Graeme Smith-led South Africans will arrive here Wednesday and start their tour with the three-day game here from Thursday.

The first Test will start here on October 1 followed by the second Test in Lahore from October 8. The Tests will be followed by a series of five one-day games.

"Umar will lead the Patron's XI, and we have tried to accommodate some youngsters who have done well recently," chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed said Saturday.

Umar played the last of his 25 Tests on Pakistan's tour of England last year.

Another discard, left-handed batsman Asim Kamal, also gets a chance after being sidelined from the Test squad for nearly a year.

Top order batsman Ahmed Shahzad, who did well on Pakistan's Under-19 team's tour of England, is also part of the 15-man squad.

Patron's XI squad: Taufeeq Umar (capt), Asim Kamal, Fawad Alam, Khurram Manzoor, Yasir Arafat, Babar Naeem, Shahid Yousuf, Rizwan Ahmed, Adnan Raza, Sarfraz Ahmed, Junaid Zia, Anwar Ali, Ahmed Shahzad, Umar Ameen, Uzair-ul Haq

let's see how fawad, taufeeq and asim kamal fare against some top notch fast bowling.

all three are knocking on the door of the test team ..

their performance here might influence selection for the second test and odi series.

Good to see A Kamal in the squad! Really hope he does well and finds a spot in the test squad.

and what difference would it have made whether they batted first or second to their settling in?

If anything it would have made things easier....given their batters some time out in the atmosphere to acclimatise and get over jet lag before batting!

Seems there is only one 'joke, mindless' person here! :))

This match is about giving the touring side some practice. They will get to bat twice and bowl once

if umar is keen to come back he should opt for battin first hence giving him a chance to play two innings, now he could have only one innings, pakistan is looking for a batsman not a bowler so strategy should be to play as many overs as u can, how come now he or others will play two innings while sa will play two innings.............that not a joke.....

The purpose of this game is to give the touring side some practice. If Taufeeq wants to get into the team it will be his performances for Pakistan A and in domestic cricket which will matter. Not one game against the saffies for the Patrons

Anwar Ali got Kallis out!

Great stuff, bet he remembers that for a long time!

Not a good move to have AB Devill so low down the order...he won't be able to do anything against Kaneria

Rizwan Ahmed took 1 wicket and Mansoor Amjad the other.

Well according to this it sounds like they are saying mansoor amjad took the catch.

"Another wicket soon followed as Gibbs slashed a short delivery straight to Mansoor Amjad at point off Zia as Patron's XI went to lunch carrying the momentum which they will hope to utilise after resumption. "

The thought of watching Amla and Kallis batting in tandem fills me with great fear........fear that I wont be able to stay awake and watch the action.

Lets hope that he has a lot more cherisable moments than getting one batsman out in a warm up game :)

:D Don't worry Kaneria will take care of Amla's mamla but with no Shoaib in the team kallis might score a few.

already signs that spin will be the key against the saffies ..

since afridi has chickened out we should have a second spinner like rehman to help out kaneria's impotent bowling.

am I actually suppused to believe that none of our bowlers bowled a single wide or no ball through 90 overs?

If you look at the scorecard the extras are 5 lb, 10 nb, 5 w. Now it is for the readers to assign the no balls and wides to the bowlers.

In the scorecard you will also notice the suspected batting lineup of Paksitan. Bowlers have won the musical chairs or the team has fixed the opening problem. First 4 batsmen are supposed to be Anwar Ali, Junaid Zia, Uzair ul Haq and Rizwan Ahmed

Take a look at how Danish did in our last test series before you start confusing what is and what isn't impotent.

This is quite retarded...if PCB wants to surprise the pants off SA batsmen by preparing spin wickets and attacking with 3-4 spinners...they should have made green tops in all side games, and should have not included any decent spinners in any of the local teams!

Instead, they are giving free batting practice and experience to most of the SA batmen who have never been to Pakistan before...I can see Kaneria struggling to pick wickets until the score reads 200 or something like that

yeah that's what they did when ENG came over in 05...Asif got 10 wickets in the warmup game.

Our best chance would be with Green tops. Asif and Gul do the early damage. Then we score a gritty 400 and win by an innings. :D

Easier said then done init?

You missed the part where Pakistan will have trouble with the green top :D

09:47 28Sep2007 RTRS-Cricket-Pakistan's Kaneria eyes 200-wicket mark

KARACHI, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria hopes to carry his English county form for Essex into next week's series against South Africa and reach a career milestone of 200 test wickets.
Kaneria, who has taken 198 wickets in 46 tests for his country, told Reuters that the home series with South Africa would also help him stake a claim for a permanent spot in the one-day team.
The 26-year-old took 109 wickets for Essex in all competitions and has been offered a full contract for 2008. The first match of a two-test series begins in Karachi on Monday.
"I learned a lot bowling for Essex, particularly in the one-day competitions," said Kaneria, who has taken 15 wickets in 18 one-day matches.
"I can do the same for my country and I am a better bowler now. My ambition remains to translate my test success into one-dayers."
Kaneria was picked for Pakistan's World Cup squad but dropped for the Twenty20 World Cup by the national selectors.

Spinner doing the damage yet they still made 400, I think we need sporting wickets for this test match series.

Wow, 7 wickets for a spinner really means we have to have both Kanny and Rehman play.

How you can pick some guy for scroing one fifty is beyond me.....when there is a guy like Manzoor who is tearing it up in domestic and just scored a brilliant 200 away! I don't care if it is South africa, the truth is they are not playing as hard as they can....hence why Taufeeq makes 50!

Yea greed Manzoor would have been an excellent pick to open. Shame we don't try newuns.

Might have been a good idea to play Mohamed Yousuf in this match, bearing in mind he's not had much cricket of late.

Patron's XI v South Africans, Karachi, 3rd day

Kamal and Rizwan fight to avoid follow-on

The Bulletin by Faras Ghani in Karachi

September 29, 2007

Lunch Patron's XI 215 for 5 (Kamal 31*, Adnan 29, Ntini 2-22) trail South Africans 467 by 252 runs

A sixth-wicket partnership of 51 between Test discard Asim Kamal and Rizwan Ahmed, who had earlier starred with the ball, enabled Patron's XI to reach lunch on the third day with 215 runs on the board, 252 runs behind the South Africans' first-innings score.

Kamal and Rizwan came together after Patron's XI lost their overnight batsmen to the pace of Makhaya Ntini and Andre Nel. Anwar Ali, the nightwatchman, had his leg stump uprooted by a full delivery while Adnan Raza, dropped by Herschelle Gibbs in the last over of the second day, edged a wide one from Nel to Smith in the slips.

Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn, targeting a spot in the final XI for the first Test starting on Monday, made light of the soaring temperatures and bowled with good pace and bounce. They made use of a deteriorating pitch, though the batsmen were troubled more by the pace than the uneven bounce.

Kamal shrugged aside the disappointment of his omission yet again from the Test squad, mixing some delightful drives with a couple of slog sweeps. The only blemish was an edged four that dropped short of the slips.

Rizwan, with a first-class average of over 36, played some quality strokes, pulling Paul Harris for a four to midwicket and driving Steyn down the ground. He gave Kamal good support and the pair will hope to take the Patron's XI past the follow-on mark in a match heading for a draw.

Patron's XI 302 for 8 (Rizwan 56, Umar 50, Harris 3-75) v South Africans 467 (Boucher 109, Amla 87, Rizwan 7-144)
Match drawn

A fighting but fluent 95-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Rizwan Ahmed and Test discard Asim Kamal carried Patron's XI to safety after a mid-innings wobble and ensured the tour match against the South Africans ended in a draw at tea on the final day.

Kamal and Rizwan came together after Patron's XI lost their overnight batsmen to the pace of Makhaya Ntini and Andre Nel. Kamal shrugged aside his omission yet again from the Test squad, mixing some delightful drives with a couple of slog sweeps. His timing, particularly square of the wicket, was exceptional but his scoring was curbed by a heavy outfield.

He batted with ease, driving the seamers and cutting the spinners, Paul Harris and Graeme Smith, and fell against the run of play. Chasing a wide delivery from Smith, Kamal top-edged a cut to backward point where Hashim Amla took a low catch. He lingered at the crease, his disappointment at another missed opportunity evident.

Rizwan, with a first-class average of over 36, punctuated his defensive game with a few classy cover-drives in his 56. He was especially severe on Harris, pulling him to the midwicket boundary and on one occasion smashing him out of the ground.

Two wickets in three balls - including that of Rizwan - from Harris caused a brief panic but Sarfraz Ahmed (29*) counterattacked with two boundaries in the following over to ease the pressure.

Harris was the pick of the South African attack with Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn going wicketless. Morkel picked up a foot injury earlier in the day and bowled two overs, putting his participation in the first Test in serious doubt.

Mickey Arthur, South Africa's coach, was satisfied with his team's performance and said the team was in good shape for the Test. "Our preparation was outstanding, we got what we wanted - bowlers having two spells each and batsmen spending time in the middle."

He reserved special praise for Harris who finished with figures of 3 for 75. "Harris started off slowly yesterday but improved as the match progressed. He varied his pace well and will add a new dimension to the attack that we have not had for the last couple of years."
