Patron's XI v Zimbabwe | FC Warm Up | Karachi | 14/01/2008 to 17/01/2008

Brings his 150 with a massive six!!! This guy can really handle the pressure well. A must for Austrailian tourl.

Patrons XI - 228-1

Nasir Jamshed on 155*
Afaq Raheem on 52*

Nasir Jamshed doing brilliantly - Afaq Raheem's innings is a lot more patient BUT im sure he will speed up as the innings progresses

Theres nothing wrong with Afaqs inns, its a 4-day game and end of day hes showing his ability to bat long periods of time. Obviously if it was an ODI he would be more aggresive!

Afaq Raheem out for 77

Jamshed on 180*

Afridi new man in...

Afaq gone. c Mpofu b Price 77. Boom Boom is next.

Its' Naumanullah actually. Not Boom Boom.

Beast was impressive. I have a feeling that he is going to dominate his second half of the career. Yes, Mark this post.

:))) :)))

Dude he is already in the final quarter of his career.

A great innings by Nasir Jamshaid and very good supporting role by Afaq Raheem, their is lot of criticism about Afaq's slow strike rate, He had to play himself in after the disappointment of not opening the batting,as nasir was batting quite aggressively there was no need for him to do the same, it just enhances his ability and his sense of the game in my opinion that this guy has maturity to bat in partership and this is a requirement at the highest level, well done Nasir and Afaq.

Yeah, don't be fooled by his advertised age. His real age is around the 31-32 years old mark...

Don't mean to rein on anyone’s parade, but take Jamshed's innings into context: against Zimbabwe on the flat tracks of Pakistan. He's hardly a 'must' for the Australian tour. Good innings undoubtedly, but by no means does that show he is good enough to play for Pakistan, he still has a lot to prove.

Opener scored over 150
Afridi took 4 wickets
Already 360 on the board
Zimbabwe bowled out for under 250

Admittedly it is the Zimbabwean team (who recently beat WI) but, this Patron XI could really shame our current crop of playing XI bar a couple of exceptions.

these were (Nasir and afaq) were the 2 players in batting which i desperatley wanted them to perform. they have done that, i hope sohail khan and samiullah takes wicket in next inning.

B/w, i think Nasir would be the one who would be opening against ZIM now.

He got a chance he made full use it. As for him being must vs Aussies I would not mind if he gets a chance because the players he will replace our certainly no 'world beaters'

very pleased to see Nasir Jamshed score big. He is easily the best out of the 3 or 4 up and coming openers we have and has been in absolutely devastating form this season.

He has surely won himself a place in the team for the ODI series.

His record isn't too impressive
ALthough he might have potential I don't see how he is that good by the STATS

What an amazing knock from Nasir!

Sad to see Naumanullah playing well, the guy is 32! Hope Fawad speeds up and smashes a strong 70-80 tomorrow.

Looking forward for tomorrow.

Never say that, if he is good enough then why not......didn't we learn something from Misbah emergence?

KO lolz patronz have killed it , if zimbabwe are faltering now what will they do when they face pakistan , man this series is gonna be great , we will find an opener for sure :) , great knock today by nasir , bring on the youngsters of pakistan ! , Pakistan Zindabaad !

Good knocks by Nasir and Afaq. Always knew that Khalid Latif was not as good as Afaq, Nasir, and Khurram.

Naturally, that would be right. But Nauman does look a lot better then other candidates.

Really? Has anyone seem him play? His avg in the mid 30s is considerably lower than likes of Hasan Raza, Adnan Raza and even Fawad Alam. Wondering whether that is actually a true reflection of his talent.

This is a good opportunity for the youngsters to stake their claim and already many have done that, especially Jamshed, will be massive baptism of fire if and when these players come against the top quality bowlers on sub-continental tracks, we can't say much until then, they can only score against the opposition they play and I'm happy many have not let the opportunity slip.

Dude , all this is telling me that Shoaib Malik does not deserve to bat at number 6 in Tests. too many better batsman out there

greta knock by Nasir..lets hope the moronic selection commitee gives him a chance...I also hope sohail still gets a chance too...good to see afaq gettin some runs!!...yasir shah? could this youngster be the answer to our spin options for the future? one to keep an eye on by the looks of things!!

This is Zimbabwe, I think the competition is good. Malik needs a kick up the backside :)) If he wants to be captain he needs to perform.

Well I am not going to be hyped by any of these players just yet, I want them to play against some decent side before I can rate them. Sohail Khan went wicket less comes a surprise to me but I guess one bad innings isn't that bad, cause he has faced better sides then this current Zimbabve side in our FC structure! Well I am really hoping and praying that Sohail Khan comes through in the second innings!

Good performance by young batsman. I hoep they are given chance in ODI to rpove their worth. This is a chance for them to cement their place given a good chance.

absolutely magnificent coverage of this game today

Afridi was in no mood to hang around - smashing a four and a six before holing out to long-off.

Ray Price inflicted some early damage on the third morning with three wickets but Fawad Alam scored an unbeaten 82 to guide Patron's XI to 478 for 6 at lunch.

The first hour, however, belonged to Naumanullah who, resuming on his overnight 46, brought up his half-century in the fourth over of the morning. Flicking an overpitched delivery from Christopher Mpofu to the leg side for two, Naumanullah turned the next delivery past midwicket as the dressing room applauded a well-played half century.

Price was introduced in to the attack after Naumanullah and Alam had added 100 together. With Nasir Jamshed's onslaught yesterday fresh on his mind, Naumanullah swept Price for a four, then reverse-swept for two before dispatching a full delivery into the sight-screen for six.

Price, however, had his revenge soon. Deceiving Naumanullah with a slow, looping delivery, he induced an early stroke and took a return catch off the leading edge. Afridi was in no mood to hang around - smashing a four and a six before holing out to long-off - and it was Alam who steadied the ship.

Alam remained unmoved even as Price picked up his third wicket - Kamran Hussain top-edging a sweep to square leg. He was content with defence, taking quick singles whenever he had the chance. He took 12 balls to get the four he needed to reach his fifty, but after that Alam shifted gears. He slogged Gary Brent over midwicket for only his second boundary of the morning and then smashed a full ball between mid-off and extra cover before pulling a short delivery over midwicket.

With Alam nearing his century, it might be a case of quick scoring in the next hour before Afridi declares the innings and has a go at the frail Zimbabwean batting for the second time in the match.

Tea Zimbabweans 209 and 73 for 2 (Masakadza 23*, Taibu 21 Samiullah 2-13) trail Patron's XI 479 for 6 dec (Jamshed 182, Naumanullah 86, Price 4-130) by 197 runs
Scorecard

Patron's XI were in a dominant position at tea on the third day, having reduced the Zimbabweans to 73 for 2 in their second innings after securing a 270-run lead. Samiullah Khan took both wickets to reduce the visitors to 36 for 2 but Hamilton Masakadza and Tatenda Taibu added 37 runs to stabilise the innings.

The home side declared their first innings at lunch - leaving Fawad Alam unbeaten on 82 - and had the Zimbabweans in trouble straight away. Although he failed to get a wicket, Sohail Khan troubled both openers with pace and bounce and had a few leg-before appeals turned down. Sohail, who took 65 wickets in nine Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches, also had Masakadza dropped by Khalid Latif at gully and the lapse in concentration resulted in a short ball that was duly pulled through midwicket.

Samiullah, in a similar manner to the first innings, troubled the right-handers with his in-swing. Bowling with pace to match Sohail, Sami struck Vusi Sibanda on the front pad after the batsman looked well set. Brendan Taylor, who made an entertaining 64 in the first innings, was also trapped lbw, this time for only 4.

There was an increase in the scoring-rate after the opening bowlers were replaced. Kamran Hussain was square-driven by Masakadza before Taibu drove Shahid Afridi down the ground. Yasir Shah, the right-arm legspinner, caused problems with his googly, which he turned a fair bit. However, with the Zimbabweans needing another 197 to make Patron's XI bat again, both batsmen were content to leave the majority of the deliveries rather than play at them.

According to the commentary Sohail has been bowling really well and has just been unlucky. Let's hope he manages to get some wickets eventually.

Faltering Zimbabweans staring at defeat

The Bulletin by Faras Ghani in Karachi

Zimbabweans 209 and 111 for 6 (Masakadza 44, Taibu 30, Samiullah 3-15, Sohail 3-30) trail Patron's XI 479 for 6 dec by 159 runs
Scorecard

The Patron's XI fast bowlers Samiullah Khan and Sohail Khan left the Zimbabweans staring at defeat; the tourists finished the third day at 111 for 6, requiring another 159 to avoid an innings defeat after the home team declared at 479 for 6.

Samiullah inflicted the damage early on: Vusi Sibanda (23) and Brendan Taylor (4) fell leg-before to inswingers. Bowling with much pace and aggression at the other end, Sohail remained luckless in his initial overs. Several plays-and-misses mixed with leg-before shouts that had summed up his first-innings effort proved to be the case this time as well.

At 36 for 2, it required a dogged innings from Hamilton Masakadza, the stand-in captain, and Tatenda Taibu to stabilise the Zimbabweans' second innings. Sharing a 63-run partnership, Masakadza remained the more authoritative batsman. Dropped at gully off Sohail, he pulled the next delivery over midwicket for a four and square-drove an unimpressive Kamran Hussain before Taibu joined in the action by driving Shahid Afridi straight down the ground.

Although turning the ball a great deal, Yasir Khan, the legspinner, was unlucky as he not only beat the edges with his spin but also had the batsmen misreading his googly. Sensing not much was being gained, Afridi brought back Sohail and his searing yorker accounted for Masakadza, who was out leg-before for a 158-ball 44. While there remained doubts about his dismissal - replays suggested the ball drifting down leg - there was none so about Taibu's. Playing loosely, he had just evaded the extra-cover fielder but another drive away from his body resulted in a edge off Sohail to second slip, Afaq Raheem completing a tumbling catch.

With Samiullah brought back as well, there were some anxious moments before the players walked off after the umpires deemed the light to be unsatisfactory. However, in a sudden change of decision, the umpires called the players back on to the field and the touring side and Sohail roared in to grab two wickets off successive deliveries. Sean Williams edged one to slip and Keith Dabengwa was adjudged leg-before.

The Patron's XI bowlers did their job after their batsmen had given them a commanding first-innings lead. Ray Price grabbed three wickets in the morning but Naumanullah scored an attacking 86 and Fawad Alam chipped in with an unbeaten 82 to pile on the misery after Nasir Jamshed had punished the visitors on the second day. Naumanullah, who resumed on 46, brought up his half-century in the fourth over of the morning. Flicking an overpitched delivery from Christopher Mpofu to the leg side for two, he turned the next delivery past midwicket as the dressing room applauded a well-made fifty.

Price's introduction brought about the first six of the morning, with Naumanullah dispatching a flighted delivery into the sightscreen. The bowler, however, had his revenge soon. Deceiving Naumanullah with a slow, looping delivery, Price induced an early stroke and took a return catch off the leading edge. Afridi was in no mood to hang around - smashing a four and a six before holing out to long-off.

Alam remained unmoved even as Price picked up his third wicket - Kamran Hussain top-edging a sweep to square leg. He was content with defence, taking quick singles whenever he had the chance. He took 125 balls to get his fifty, but after that Alam shifted gears. He slogged Gary Brent over midwicket for only his second boundary of the morning and then smashed a full ball between mid-off and extra cover before pulling a short delivery over midwicket.

Left stranded 18 short of his century, Alam will be content with a determined knock, one that might prove enough to take his team to an innings victory on the final day.

Some exciting news there. I'm more excited by reports of Yasir now than of Sohail Khan!

The report indicates that Sohail is an aggressive bowler, a "searing yorker" and two wickets in two balls are usually associated with attacking quickies.

Of Samiullah, well if he has an outswinger to complement his inswinger, and with the report indicating he matched Sohail's pace (who knows what this is but I'd be surprised if it doesnt surpass the early 80's) he should warrant a run in the side ahead of Tanvir.

no doubt he is the best spinner in our country ATM.

Good to see Sohail Khan take wickets.
Samiullah Khan- Well what can we say??? He has been bowling great his entire career but hasnt been given a run with the team. I mean a bowling avg. of under 20. WHat more does he need to prove?

Must've been a typo, Taibu went to Samiullah according to the scorecard

He had Taibu dropped could very well have been 4 with more luck.

yup two years back when he was in the squad for our to england he had a similar profile picture but u can go to pcb.com.pk to find a recent mug shot of him

Yep its dated as taken in 2003 on cricinfo. Still he seems to have changed colour and lost hair. Strange.

Limited overs record is over 30 but first class is under 20, looks like he is more suited to the longer version of the game.

I would still pick Sohail Khan for the ODI's. I think many of the players made a credible case to be picked for the ODI series.

im really impressed , man our domestic players are giving zimbabwe a thrashing , afridi is captaincy material , btw did eny1 hear that zimbabwe said they can beat pakistan :))) , ummm btw on a serious note , we cud be gaining a few batsman from this upcoming series by the looks of things , which is great :)

Pretty tight stuff from both Sohail and Samiullah! Hopefully, they both get picked for the main squad, and start.

Samiullah has to loose weight and get fit he was hiffing and puffing after 5 overs when he played the ODI.

Samiullah bowled in the 70s if i remembered correctly. I was not impressed at all.

any updates on this match...cricinfo isn't updated the scores! I would think the match is over already, anybody have updates?

Patron's XI v Zimbabweans, Karachi, 4th day

Maruma delays Patron's XI charge

The Bulletin by Faras Ghani in Karachi

January 17, 2008

Lunch Zimbabweans 209 and 193 for 7 (Maruma 59*, Masakadza 44, Sami 4-35) trail Patron's XI 479 for 6d by 77 runs
Scorecard

Timycen Maruma flayed the Patron's XI attack with an entertaining 59 as the Zimbabweans survived the morning session to go into lunch on 193 for 7, now needing another 77 to make the home side bat again.

At 111 for 6 with Sohail Khan and Samiullah Niazi fired up by last night's heroics, the match was expected to come to a swift conclusion. As Elton Chigumbura (2 off 39 balls) was adjudged leg-before to Samiullah, the stage looked set. Maruma, however, not only defied the fiery pace of Sohail and the movement of Samiullah, but also managed to keep the scorecard moving at a lively pace.

Dropped twice by Sarfraz Ahmed - both edges off the bowling of the unlucky Sohail - Maruma played his shots without fear. An overpitching and off-colour Kamran Hussain was edged between the slips and gully for four before Yasir Shah, the leg spinner, was hit over mid-off for a four. Although streaky at times, Maruma, who was ably supported by Gary Brent's defensive tactics at the other end, then attacked Sohail as he returned for a second spell with the new ball.

Following the drop, Sohail was driven past mid-on before being blasted past extra cover by Maruma to reach his first first-class 50. The next over saw another drive over extra-cover before a wild slash brought about the second drop. Riding on his luck, and Pakistan's poor fielding as a few overthrows complemented the dropped catches, Maruma took his side within touching distance of the 200-mark, a psychological achievement if nothing else before the ODI series.

For the home side, Samiullah bowled well and had a few leg-before appeals turned down while Sohail, not as fast as he was towards close yesterday, did manage to beat the edge on a number of occasions. Developing a deadly, swinging yorker, Sohail almost had Maruma and Brent lbw but edges saved both batsmen at the last minute.

Sohail being expensive :13: but that was expected because of the lack of experience ,I am sure he will learn fast by playing with the likes of Akhtar ,Gul and Asif.

Samiullah haul seals innings victory

Patron's XI 479 for 6 dec (Jamshed 182, Naumanullah 86, Alam 82*, Price 4-130) beat Zimbabweans 209 (Taylor 64, Taibu 46, Afridi 4-37) and 236 (Maruma 71, Masakadza 44, Samiullah 5-42) by an innings and 34 runs
Scorecard

Samiullah Niazi captured five wickets - including his 200th first-class scalp - to send the Zimbabweans crashing to an innings-and-34-run defeat. Although Timycen Maruma scored an entertaining 71 off 101 deliveries while sharing a 96-run seventh-wicket partnership with Gary Brent, it was always a huge task for the Zimbabwean tail to make the Patron's XI bat again on a slowing pitch.

After capturing three wickets yesterday, Samiullah was on target straight away as he dismissed Elton Chigumbura leg-before in only his second over of the day. Dropped twice by Sarfraz Ahmed off Sohail Khan, Maruma played his shots without fear. An overpitching and off-colour Kamran Hussain was edged between the slips and gully for four before Yasir Shah, the leg spinner, was hit over mid-off for a four. Although streaky at times, Maruma, who was ably supported by Brent's solid defence, then attacked Sohail as he returned for a second spell with the new ball.

Sohail was driven past mid-on before being blasted past extra cover by Maruma to reach his first first-class half-century. The next over saw another drive over extra-cover before a wild slash brought about the second drop. Riding his luck, and taking advantage of Pakistan's poor fielding as a few overthrows complemented the dropped catches, Maruma took his side past the 200-mark, a psychological achievement if nothing else before the ODI series.

Shahid Afridi, bringing himself on after the lunch interval, produced a flighted delivery that spun and took the outside edge of Maruma's bat to end a fine partnership. Striking eight fours in all, Maruma, not only managed to make the home side pay for some sloppy fielding, but also get a bit of confidence under his belt prior to the one-dayers.

Afridi managed to deceive Brent with a slower delivery - bowled off his glove - before being hammered by Ray Price for a six that landed outside the ground. Samiullah returned to pick the final wicket and inflict the innings defeat. Bowling with pace and troubling the right-handed batsmen with his in-swing, four of Samiullah's dismissals were leg-before and with six wickets in the match, his claims for a place in the ODI squad are stronger than ever.

Is this Faras Ghani guy an Indian reporter...he says about Samiullah 'Bowling with pace and troubling the right-handed batsmen with his in-swing'; now call me crazy but last we all saw Samiullah bowling in the 20-20 cup in England, he was bowling at a max speed of 75-78 MPH!

Now either he has stolen Wasim Pandiya Akram's 'MoJo' and hence bowling fast or is this a different Samiullah guy?
