Fast bowler Shaheen Afridi returns to Pakistan’s Test squad for the two-match away series against Sri Lanka next month. The men’s national selection committee has also included uncapped batter Mohammad Huraira and all-rounder Aamir Jamal in the 16-strong squad for what will be Pakistan’s first assignment in the third cycle of the ICC World Test Championship.

Pakistan squad: Babar Azam (c), Mohammad Rizwan (vc & wk), Aamir Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Huraira, Mohammad Nawaz, Naseem Shah, Noman Ali, Salman Ali Agha, Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), Saud Shakeel, Shaheen Afridi and Shan Masood

The squad has been designed keeping in mind the conditions that the team will encounter in Sri Lanka. The team boasts four spinners, four fast bowlers, six specialist batters and two keeper-batters.

Shaheen is one wicket away from reaching a century of Test wickets and no Pakistan bowler has picked up more wickets than him since the left-armer made his debut on 3 December 2018. Shaheen, 23, averages 24.86 and has an economy of 3.04.

Expressing his pleasure to be back in the Test side, Shaheen said: “I am very excited to be returning to the Pakistan Test side after a year. I dearly missed Test cricket and it was tough for me to be away from this format.

“After missing our entire home season because of the injury I suffered in Sri Lanka, I am eager to make an impactful comeback in the same country and complete a century of wickets in Test cricket. I want to thank my fans who have provided me support in tough times and I am ready for the challenges ahead.”

Huraira has played 24 first-class, 10 List A and six T20s and he has earned the spot after an impressive run. He was the leading run-scorer in the last two iterations of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. In the 2022-23 edition, the 21-year-old, who hails from Sialkot, was the only batter to breach the 1000-run mark, playing an integral role in helping Northern to maiden first-class title. In 11 matches, Huraira smashed four centuries and two half-centuries on his way to 1,024 runs at an average of 73.14.

He continued his first-class form on the tour of Zimbabwe last month scoring 178 and 64 against Zimbabwe A at Kwekwe and Mutare.

He holds the record for being the second youngest batter to score a first-class triple-century in Pakistan, behind legendary Javed Miandad. Huraira achieved the feat in the 2021-22 season, hitting 311 off 343 in Northern’s thumping win of an innings and 170 runs over Balochistan at the State Bank Ground, Karachi.

Huraira will be joined by his Northern and Shaheens’ teammate Aamir. The 27-year-old, who hails from Mianwali, topped the wicket-takers chart for the fast bowlers in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23, taking 31 scalps at 29.71 and recorded two five-wicket hauls. He was the leading wicket-taker in the recent six-match One-Day series between Zimbabwe Select and Pakistan Shaheens with 16 dismissals at an average of 21.

Aamir’s career’s highlight, however, was defending 15 runs in the last over against England’s Moeen Ali on his Pakistan debut in September last year. Aamir’s immaculate death bowling helped Pakistan to a thrilling six-run win over England in the fifth T20 International of the seven-match series. Aamir has the experience of two T2oIs, 23 first-class, 23 List A and 20 T20s.

Reflecting on the squad, Haroon Rashid, the national men’s chief selector, said: “I want to congratulate all the players who have been selected in the side, especially Mohammad Huraira and Aamir Jamal who have pushed their case through impressive performances over a period of time.

“We have devised this squad with the conditions and challenges that our players will encounter in Sri Lanka. This is our first series of the third round of the ICC World Test Championship and this squad is fully capable of providing us a solid start.

“The conditions in Sri Lanka largely favour finger spinners – something that we have seen over the years and during Pakistan’s last visit to the island – so we have three such bowlers to go with the mystery spin of Abrar Ahmed. At the same time, we cannot overlook the need for fast bowlers and, as such, we have included four pacers so the captain and team management have ample resources on the tour. We boast a strong batting line-up, which I am confident will do well in the two matches.

“The players who have missed out on the selection should not get bogged down as they firmly remain part of our plans. We have an exciting and challenging season ahead of us and they should make the most of the opportunities in domestic cricket and Shaheens’ tours to keep themselves ready.”

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board has also announced the appointment of Morne Morkel as the national side’s bowling coach. The former South Africa pacer has joined the national side on a six-month contract. Over the course of his 11-year-long international career, Morkel took 309 wickets in 86 Tests, 188 wickets in 117 ODIs and 47 scalps in 44 T20Is. His last international game was in Lahore for World XI against Pakistan in September 2017.

Player support personnel: Rehan-ul-Haq (team manager), Grant Bradburn (head coach), Andrew Puttick (batting coach), Morne Morkel (bowling coach), Aftab Khan (fielding coach), Abdul Rehman (assistant coach), Drikus Saaiman (strength and conditioning coach), Cliffe Deacon (physiotherapist), Ahsan Iftikhar Nagi (media and digital content manager), Lt Col Usman Anwari (Retd) (security manager), Talha Ejaz (analyst) and Malang Ali (masseur).

Pakistan will assemble in Karachi on 3 July for a camp ahead of their departure for Sri Lanka on 9 July. The itinerary of the tour will be announced by Sri Lanka Cricket in due course.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka last played a Test series in July 2022 that was drawn 1-1.

Good squad. Happy to see Abrar and Naseem in there. Unless Pakistan mess it up yet again, this series is there for the taking. SL are not that strong anymore.

So, Abrar is a guaranteed starter. PAK spin stocks are at an all time low if this guy is the best spinner going around . Why not play that young offie Mubasir ?

Made up of mostly timid, limited and selfish players. I am disappointed.

There were better options but our think tank don't have the vision I am afraid.

Playing X1:

Imam Ul Haq
Abdullah Shafique
Saud Shakeel
Babar Azam (C)
Mohammed Rizwan
Sarfraz Ahmed (Wk)
Agha Salman
Mohammed Nawaz
Shaheen Afridi
Naseem Shah
Abrar Ahmed

I know he is getting old and keeping wise not number 1 but didn't sarfraz completely outperform Rizwan in the last test series and in fact doing better than most of regular batting lineup. Why would you make Rizwan vice captain and force dropping sarfraz again.
Also Sri Lanka will be hugely about handling spin and he is our best player of spin in general.

Lol Rizwan in the squad but Kamran Ghulam isn’t

Rizwan will be playing as a batsman solely. How is he a better batsman than KG??

Rizwan has some very powerful connections in the PCB or outside of it. Something just doesn’t add up with this guy

Bang average player
Bradman level hype

why Fakhar Zaman Mohammad Abbas Yasir Shah Asad Shafiq are not selected in the squad what happened to them

Don't know how this guy abdullah shafiq keeps making it to the squad again and again. Was exposed badly in 3 home series but he is yet to be dropped. What a parchi.

lol, which warner, bairstow, head have the pak selectors left out? this is the best pak have.

mubasir didnt do well in the first class games with the ball, pak spin stocks are at an all time low, only hope is to give a young guy like abrar ten fifteen games and hope he levels up.

He’s a far better batsmen than kamran Ghulam. But according to kamran Ghulam is better then Babar.

Looking at test Record of Shan Masood , he is probably one of the worse top order Batsman to play for Pakistan with Average of 28 in 25 matches. How many more chances this guy deserves given that he is already 33?

He’s a far better batsmen than kamran Ghulam. But according to kamran Ghulam is better then Babar.

How is he a far better batsman than Kamran Ghulam with no off-side cricketing shots????!

If Pakistan are working towards this line up,

1. Imam
2. Shafique
3. Shan
4. Babar
5. Rizwan
6. Salman
7. Sarfaraz (wk)
8. Hassan
9. Shaheen
10. Naseem
11. Abrar

I recon we will be 180 all out every time against Australia

Haroon Rasheed regarding the selections:

"No player can play for an extended period. Even big players like Azhar Ali or Mohammad Yousuf didn't perform well initially. It will take some time for new players to settle and make their place. Players like Mohammad Huraira can fill the spot of big players like Azhar Ali,"

"Juniors are receiving more attention for upcoming tours. We are also working on our back-up strength. Kamran Ghulam will also be included in our future plans "

What's the go with Yasir Shah? How does a match winner like him keep getting sidelined every series. We have no proper spinner at all in the squad.

Acha jee

So the time was to integrate him now before the AUSTRALIA tour! Why are they always destroying this guy mentally on and off the field with these promises??

Perhaps have a look at this "matchwinner's" performance last year in lanka.

Give Abrar some time. He played against a rampaging England side on dead flat pitches and still got wickets. He outperformed the other spinners from both sides despite being on debut.

What is it that Pak fans look for? A 7 wicket haul every innings??

Unfortunately the (c) next to Babar Azam's name drains any hopes or expectations from this series. We are going nowhere in Tests under his watch.

The squad itself is about the best we can do under the circumstances. Noman Ali is fortunate given he averaged 49 in the QEA Trophy last season. The only justification is he's there to keep an end tight enabling Abrar to attack.

There's only a handful of players who are established, the rest are still playing for places. A win would be a pleasant surprise.

I saw Abrar in the QEA Trophy before his Test debut and my main concern is he leans very heavily on his variations and doesn't turn his stock ball as much. Usama Mir has a better legbreak than him (but fewer variations).

He bowls in red ball cricket almost like a white ball bowler.

People say he bowls the googly with an unorthodox action (from the fingers than the wrist) but its not like he's undecipherable. He bowls the googly a bit slower, and the English picked him fairly easily after his initial burst. Bewal Express will be able to go in further depth.

Obviously he deserves a chance but is he the answer to our spin bowling woes ? That remains to be seen.

Why is Usama Mir not considered for tests? He must be surely better than that useless Nauman Ali.. wonder why Pakistan keeps persisting with Nauman Ali?

Test class legspinners are a rare breed - Yasir included. Nothing I've seen of Abrar convinces me that he is going to make it in this format. He neither has the pace and accuracy nor does he get the massive turn of a classical leggie. Yasir was very quick through the air when he first came in.

However, if he is indeed the only option available, PAK should hope for the best and look to surprise SL in the 1st Test.

Abrar is better than I thought he would be, and although the variations are helpful, the best bowlers take most of their wickets with bread and butter balls. His googly will be picked by any decent bat and it will come down to whether he can consistently spin his leg spinner and beat the bat. I still don't see any successful long term future but I am desperate to be proved wrong.

dude is the wrong side of 40, a fairly heavy smoker, and in no domestic form. i was a fan, hes done his bit n pak need to move on from him, hes averaged nearly 50 over the last 4 years.

Shan and Nauman should not have been selected. Not sure about Hasan Ali.He has got his rhythm back and is bowling well for Warwickshire.

How Nauman Ali, Hasan Ali and Shan Masood keep getting selected?

My 11

1) Iman
2) Abduallah
3) Saud
4) Babar
5) Sarfraz (wk)
6) Salman
7) Nawaz
8) Hassan
9) Shaheen
10) Naseem
11) Abrar

Sarfraz should not be dropped after his batting against New Zealand. Rizwan's recent batting in test matches doesn't warrant him being a specialist test batsman.

Abdullah should be given the first test match and he fails, he needs to be dropped. He has been bad recently.

Pakistan squad: Babar Azam (c), Mohammad Rizwan (vc & wk), Aamir Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Huraira, Mohammad Nawaz, Naseem Shah, Noman Ali, Salman Ali Agha, Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), Saud Shakeel, Shaheen Afridi and Shan Masood

The selectors are absolutely dumb & clueless.
I would make the following 7 changes immediately!!!

1. Fakhar Zaman in - Shan Masood out

2. Mohammad Haris in - Sarfaraz Ahmed out

3. Usama Mir in - Noman Ali out

4. Faheem Ashraf in - Aamir Jamal out

5. Ihsanullah in - Mohammad Nawaz out

6. Kamran Ghulam in - Saud Shakeel out

7. Mohammad Abbass in - Hasan Ali out

What has Saud done wrong?? He was the only batting highlight in our home test series. He is good for Asian conditions, not sure about SENA though. His test batting average is 72!!

Please do not get fooled by that average of Saud Shakeel. I have seen him bat as he has a poor approach. He is indeed a poor man’s Asad Shafiq and will score useless runs.

Saud Shakeel was also badly exposed in county cricket recently. It is now Kamran Ghulam’s turn to get a fair chance.

Selectors have selected a better squad than all the above names you came up with

> Fakhar is not the player he was when it comes to 5 day cricket

> Sarfraz bolstered with runs in his come back, had lapses in keeping which we cant neglect but certainly a better batsman in tests who has the counter-attacking nature , good against spin and can score a run ball 100 even

> Usama Mir was good in LOIs not so good in FC.. Anyhow need a better replacement for Noman

> Faheem bowling wise ok as a 3rd seamer , got many chances in batting but not up there to cement his place.. Hasan ali will do much better than him as a 3rd seamer better in batting comparatively

> Ihsanullah a good choice but let him get ready for Aus tour end of this year.. SRL need more spinners...

> Kamran Ghulam can be in the squad not in place of Saud shakeel who has scored a lot of runs so far with the chances he got, cementing his place..

Players like saud , shafique and imam need to score a lot and cement their places because there is a big future ahead for them and the test side will become stronger in the near future if they are correctly backed....

Iftikar Ahmed should have been in this squad instead of Shan. Sarfraz should play ahead of Rizwan, so why is Rizwan VC. They should have given VC to shaheen. PCB with absolutely no common sense.

The selections are mind boggling. Do our selectors even pay any attention to performances of the players in recent test series. Our spin stocks are at an all time low, why are we persisting with Nawaz, Nauman e.t.c. Nauman has been poor for a very long time whereas Nawaz is a part timer at best. Why didn't Usama Mir get a look in?

Give Abrar some time. He played against a rampaging England side on dead flat pitches and still got wickets. He outperformed the other spinners from both sides despite being on debut.

What is it that Pak fans look for? A 7 wicket haul every innings??

England were able to work out Abrar after facing him in one innings. NZ played Abrar even more comfortably and they realized that all you have to do is play him with a straight bat and Abrar gets neutralized because he doesn't really turn the ball prodigiously and he can't consistently bowl his leg cutters, variations at a fast pace

Our spinners are going to Salman Ali Agha, Nauman Ali, Mohammad Nawaz and Abrar. We are taking an out of form, shot spinner, 2 part timers and one rookie who has already been found out to the spinning wickets of Sri Lanka. Do our selectors even take test cricket seriously? Is this what Rehan Ahmed the analyst, match up guy is bringing to the table?

Very dissapointed

Babar retained as captain, after the shambles of the last WTC, and sirifishi like Shan still in the squad. Pakistan will remain test minnows with such selections.

Why doesnt Fakhar get selected in tests? He can be our sehwag in tests and bat aggressively. Also has apetite for long innings so test would suit him.

Looking at test Record of Shan Masood , he is probably one of the worse top order Batsman to play for Pakistan with Average of 28 in 25 matches. How many more chances this guy deserves given that he is already 33?

Yes. Whereas Fawad was dropped just after 1 bad series.

You should have continued with Yasir Shah. Even an out of form Yasir has more class in him than these ordinary spinners.

I never even imagined that I shall see such bunch of spinners playing for Pakistan. Abdul Qadir,Mushraq, Kaneria ,Saqlain, Ajmal ,Arshad have really set the standard so high.

I like Huraira but why is he in the squad? We don't need any more openers...

Not selecting Ihsanullah Khan is a huge blunder.

Also, agree with others that Nawaz and the other left arm spinner Ali are both useless.

Disappointed for Usama Mir. And who is going to bat at 3? Easy parchi for Shan.

Imam, Abdullah, Shan, Babar, Saud, Rizwan, Salman, Abrar, Hassan, Shaheen, Naseem

Weak.

So, Abrar is a guaranteed starter. PAK spin stocks are at an all time low if this guy is the best spinner going around . Why not play that young offie Mubasir ?

Yes they should have included Mubsir but probably because they see him as all-rounder in which they already have Agha in the xi.

Don't know how this guy abdullah shafiq keeps making it to the squad again and again. Was exposed badly in 3 home series but he is yet to be dropped. What a parchi.

Go look at some of his knocks previously to that series.

Hurraira can easily play in the top 5.

Shan and Nauman are poor selections. Proven non performers.

I wouldn't have picked Nawaz either. His batting isn't test level and his bowling control has been quite wayward of late.

Would have picked Zafar Gohar and a middle order batter instead. Yasir is definitely a better option still than Nauman.

Realistically we are only going to be playing 1 leggie in the XI, so it makes sense to plump for one of them so they aren't under pressure. This is especially important given their inexperience.

Abrar did fine against England so i have no issue with him being retained. He should get a run of tests as chopping and changing won't do us any good.

Babar as captain.
Rizwan as vice-captain.

You love to see it!

The pride of Pakistan are on the top of the cricketing world, mashaAllah.

This is what hard work, integrity and honesty gets you. Sharjeel, Umar Akmal, Mohammad Amir etc need to take note while they are watching this series on TV.

Agree with Zafar Gohar. One test on a green wicket in New Zealand was a pretty brutal way to halt his test career. Zafar is well into his prime now and should at least be getting opportunities over guys who are at the brink of retirement.

Yasir is finished though. Abrar and now Usama Mir are ahead of him in the pecking order. Unless by some miracle he can rediscover his mojo i would assume his international career is over.

Ah yes, loved those series victories at home against England, Aussies and NZ...

Oh wait...

Wasn't Abbas playing recently somewhere. I thought he was our best Test bowler. What happened? And how come pakistan is not producing spinners?

Wasn't Abbas playing recently somewhere. I thought he was our best Test bowler. What happened? And how come pakistan is not producing spinners?

Abbas is currently playing for Hampshire and doing well.

He was my first choice bowler in tests. Even if he doesnt take wickets, he keeps things very tight which is gold in this modern Bazball era.

I would go with this line up

Imaam
Abdullah
Saud Shakeel
Babar Azam
Hurraira
Sarfraz
Agha Salman
Nawaz
Shaheen
Naseem
Abrar

I would have picked ihsanullah instead of Hassan Ali
Also gohar instead of noman
Shan Masood for Kamran Ghulam

Go look at some of his knocks previously to that series.

They do not matter. He failed in 3 home series. These are more than enough matches. This guy has issues against left arm spinners and incoming deliveries. 3 failed home series are more than enough matches to test a guy's ability.

Splendid

0-3 at home v England

Captain Babar and VC Rizwan

You love to see it

I'm not sure why folk would come out with these sort of cringe statements no matter the agenda.

All things said, this should be a a very competitive series between 2 equally matched sides in Test cricket. Neither of these two teams can compete with top 5 sides for now .
On the other hand, they are too strong for the likes of Windies, BD, AFG etc.

Did they not just competed with NZ in the home series?

Usama Mir needs to play lots of FC to start being in contention for the test team. In tests it's not variations but a top notch bread and butter ball that gets wickets. He doesn't have that or anything close. Abrar has done well so far but again the question will be asked as to how will he take wickets when the novelty wears off. Noman has no power left and looks about 50. As these wickets will turn, I would have taken Mehran as his pace would be an asset on wickets that turn and don't require him to put much spin on the ball

Superstars like Shaheen and Babar should not play against lowly teams like SL and WI. These are the teams against whom you should try out promising youngsters.

We all know what players like Shaheen or Babar or even a Kohli would do. Other than stat padding and injuries, they achieve nothing.

Acha jee

So the time was to integrate him now before the AUSTRALIA tour! Why are they always destroying this guy mentally on and off the field with these promises??

Stop it. Kamran Ghulan is as mediocre as they come and the PCB sees that. You talk abou him like he's Rahul Dravid.

Hurrairra is an opener. He is anyway going to warm the bench for a while before given a chance. But with babar complementing him on a few occasions and judging by form, we might see him play sooner

Give him his shot and let’s see who makes who look mediocre

I’m pretty sure he won’t do any worse than Rizwan and Shan Masood

Kamran Ghulam might be mediocre but it is impossible to be worse than Masood.

He's a opener but if you have seen him bat he's more comfortable against spin.

So you pick and choose.2 series and also have you seen Gill even after failing in multiple series he's been backed due to being young.

Pakistan will return to Galle – where they recorded the highest-ever chase for the venue last year – for the first of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka next month. The first Test will commence at the Galle International Cricket Stadium on 16 July and the two teams will then travel to Colombo for the second Test at the Singhalese Sports Club from 24 till 28 July.

For what is Pakistan’s first assignment in the 2023-25 cycle of the ICC World Test Championship, the Babar Azam’s side will arrive in Sri Lanka on 9 July and play a two-day warm-up game on 11 and 12 July before they head south for the first Test. The venue for the warm-up fixture will be confirmed closer to time.

Pakistan last toured Sri Lanka in July 2022 and that two-match Test series resulted in 1-1. Pakistan scaled the target of 342 to register the best run chase at the ground and win the first Test by four wickets. The hosts pounced back in the second Test to level the series with a 246-run win.

Pakistan last played a Test at the Singhalese Sports Club, Colombo in 2014. They have played six Tests at the ground, winning one, losing one, and the other four matches ended in draw.

Itinerary of Pakistan’s tour of Sri Lanka:
