PCB needs to take a stand and forfeit the India-Pakistan World Cup group stage game

Should the PCB forfeit the World Cup group game against India?

Both countries people are emotional and are far from realities
That is why Modi’s nawazs zardaris looted you guys used people sentiments for their benefits
India is in mess itself so is pakistan and people make it worse with their hatred
Let cricket be cricket .
Modi playing perfect eye wash games right now to gain public support
But did one address the root cause of all this ?

“Let cricket be cricket” is also a pipe dream that only works in movies and on PP - India is clearly intent on severing all ties with us so I reckon we should go the full circle and forfeit the WC game.

I’d rather India boycott Pakistan because then they can’t be called
Hypocrites which they currently are considering they like boycotting Pakistan in every other way.

Don’t give them any leverage. Call on them to be consistent with their policy.

If India boycott - it will be a mere extension of their current policies so it won’t affect anything.

We have yet to retaliate in anyway so if we boycott first - it will be a major statement by us.

I do not see how India has any leverage - they are severing ties left and right and talks of bilateral cricketing ties ended a long time ago by them. If we boycott - it will be our first retaliation. BCCI will have no leg to stand on if they wish to complain.

pakistan forfeiting won't do anything, only screw us in the world cup.

Situation in Kashmir is expected to get worse by the time WC starts. If Pakistan does'nt forfeit the game, I am sure India will.

Pakistan should not forfeit, the three points will be crucial.

Pakistan shouldn’t and won’t do it anyways.

If India has any problem against us due to political reasons, then it’s upon them to decide whether they will play against Pak.

The three points are welcome... :)

I think that we will see a India vs Pakistan match on the 16th of June.

BCCI won’t forfeit in an ICC tournament.

India will not boycott as they will want to create a perception of moral high ground. Pakistan boycotting will affect the relations with ECB and ICC. This will not help Pakistan in inviting teams to play in Pakistan.

PCB's bigger problem is not India. India will not play a series anyway. DOn't antagonize ICC and other nations.

This just shows how the indian gov is.
They don't want to play a bilateral series but play in icc events.
What a joke

It is what it is.

Sad, people don’t recognize the double-standards.

Making Pakistani’s always the scapegoat.

What would we even gain from this?

What have we ever gained from playing into the BCCI narrative of straining bilateral series yet turning up at every ICC tournament as if nothing had happened?

Yes the ICC India vs Pak is a huge cash cow for everyone but if we don't boycott now - the BCCI will and we will have nothing but egg on our face. India is severing ties with us and so a measured and appropriate response would be if we return the favor and forfeit this game. Let our political stance be known to the world.

I am not sure how the ECB will be antagonized by this? :13:

In the 2003 WC - both England and NZ forfeited their games against Zimbabwe yet SAF didn't give a damn at all.

Yes the ICC may give us a notice and/or a formal statement along with some fines but that is the least of our concerns.

With Imran khan leading our country we dont need this type of negativity, let chai walas do their thing and we oxfordians do ours ;)

pakistan forfeiting won't do anything, only screw us in the world cup.

Screw us how?

We have a low chance of winning the WC anyway and India will be strong favorites anyway if the game is played. Those 3 points should be considered sunk - we should just circumvent India and reach the SF's via another path.

If we play India in the SF or Final - we can decide then what to do.

So Cricbuzz just removed all PSL related news and scorecards yet some posters are questioning my recommendation of forfeiting this WC fixture :13:

The fact remains that politics and cricket is deeply entangled with each other in this day and age and PCB must also get involved in politics like our neighbours have done.

Did they? That’s extremely poor form. News media should focus on reporting news and not taking sides

LOL.

That "Oxfordian" has not uttered a single word since this crisis begun whilst India are going all guns blazed at us - and I'm 99% sure he won't do a damn thing.

Doing nothing is the worst possible thing we can do right now. A measured yet effective response is needed in this hour.

I just checked, they do have the PSL news and updates from yesterday. They are probably suffering from the DSports blackout of PSL in India. No official statements from them, so let’s not jump to conclusions

Is turning up on the day and beating them not a better response than boycotting like kitties. That is what we should be aiming for.

Since you are a genius - please explain how?

You can continue to harp about about our "3 points" but the fact is none of that matters since politics and national pride is clearly more important in eyes of the BCCI - I suggest that should be our priority too.

I am in the States and do not see it.

Maybe some of their international sites are still showing it...

In an ideal world yes you are right but that not how cricket unfortunately works anymore.

Many cricket boards have indulged in political statements such as the ACB and of course the BCCI so I see no reason why we cannot do the same - even if it the WC.

Let the world know what our political stance is and why we are retaliating.

Would love to hear your opinion on this?

There's no point.
Let india boycott if they want to. We shouldn't be doing it ourselves.

Why would we boycott it. India has accused us of something without proof and we forfeit? i do not understand the logic.

There's no point.

If India do it - the status quo will remain the same as it is already their policy to sever ties with Pakistan.

However, we do not have such an approach or policy so if we boycott - it will make a major political statement and garner support from the public and media on our response to India.

Why would we boycott it. India has accused us of something without proof and we forfeit? i do not understand the logic.

That is exactly the point.

We facing multiple accusations and bans and have yet to respond in any meaningful way. The India vs Pak clash at a WC is a major cash cow for the BCCI as well.

It will be our way of putting our foot down and saying enough is enough and show everyone that the PCB can get entangled in politics if other cricket boards choose to do the same.

I have reached to the point where i genuinely have stopped caring if Pakistan plays India or not. This nonsense has been going on for far too long. Keep politics and sports seperate is what i have always maintained.

If anything playing sports may have helped bringing and uniting the nations..

Which bans? We can not punish the ICC for Indias bad behaviour and the wc is an ICC event

Yes this nonsense has been going on for too long but the PCB does nothing about it...

I can guarantee that if the PCB does nothing and play the WC game against India - everyone will have a smile and laugh on social media but whenever there is a diplomatic crisis between the two countries India will again start severing ties between us and we will be back to square one...

I have long maintained the stance that we should swallow our pride and continue to push India to resume cricketing ties but that time has long gone. Business sense and acting rationally only works if both parties see even a small chance in resuming their relationship. But in our case - our relationship with India seems to be getting worse and worse with each passing incident (and no end in sight...)

PCB has to put its foot down and say enough is enough - now or never.

Which bans? We can not punish the ICC for Indias bad behaviour and the wc is an ICC event

I meant in a generic sense and no just related to cricket. - Indian media and production studios are removing Pakistani related content and hence facing a countrywide boycott yet we have not responded or retaliated in anyway.

No. This is a sporting event, not a political meeting.

Why hurt our world cup chances over India? It's not that important, Pakistanis don't even care that much about whatever India is saying, we're used to it.

I understand your point of view but international politics will triumph over sporting events in this day and age.

I strongly believe that doing and saying nothing will do us more harm than good.

For one thing, a lot more spice has been added to the garam masala in Manchester.

I think we shouldn't forfeit that match for few reasons. First of all, what will be the difference between us and them if we also cry foul and begin forfeiting matches and severing cricketing ties further?

Secondly, under the assumption that they forfeit, will we be awarded all the points, and if we forfeit they be awarded all the points? If so, then we'll probably be screwed for the rest of the tournament if we do forfeit.

Not an India basher but I whole heartedly agree with the OP on this one. Some things should be accepted as they are & not as we wish them to be.

It might sound ridiculous and even just a few months back - I was among the few who advocated for renewing cricketing ties with India (mainly for monetary gain) but honestly the situation is beyond hopeless now and only seems to get worse with each passing event. I think we need to realize that cricketing ties with India are is not possible for the next decade or so.

Given the political climate - PCB needs to act now and immediately inform the ICC, BCCi and the Indian Govt that it is forfeiting the India-Pak WC Group stage game. If PCB doesn't do it - I am pretty sure BCCI will do it anyway but if we act first it will be a major statement that we can also implement the necessary boycotts, restrictions, bans etc. given the current political climate. A show of strength if drastically needed!

If ICC fines us - so be it. We have always gotten the short end of the stick with the ICC every time and this time - it will be no different. Losing those 3 points doesn't bother me much either since we have a low change of winning the WC anyway. If we meet India in the WC SF or Final - the course of action can be decided then but I think an appropriate and measured response is to forfeit the group stage game. With a few months advance notice - hopefully the organization and logistics will not be impacted as much.

Now to be clear - I have the utmost respect for the Indian cricket team and admire some of their players as legends and global icons but the current situation is not conducive to cricketing ties. Once the situation hopefully normalizes - we can hold discussions with the BCCI on the next steps.

The PCB needs to act NOW and take a stand. We all need to be united as fans, players, media etc. and give our full support!

Thoughts?

Maybe a poll will be a good idea.

Terrible Idea. It will only harm Pakistan. And India will get the points. and further isolate Pakistan cricket.

we don't need to stoop down to the indians level

boycotting that much and costing us 3 points does more damage to us and we benefit from it in no way.

a better way to get back at india and indians would be for them to forfeit the match, let us gain 3 points and we go onto win the world cup.

Completely disagree.

Let's stay the course and allow india to continue their amateur behavior.

If India does forfeit - I would be pretty confident that they wouldn’t care one bit if Pakistan won the WC.

Whichever side forfeits - it would be pretty clear that they would have their national interests as a higher priority than the WC clash and possibly even the WC.

No one is going to forfeit the world cup game. So chill. WC will happen according to schedule and if PCB decide to boycott the game, BCCI & Team India will take it with open arms. Having a rest day in a long tournament like WC will be good for the team.

ofcourse they would if the 3 points they conceded resulted us in reaching the semis and then the finals

let the indians be petty, we have no reason to be.

Don't worry you can have as many rest days as you want because Pak-India cricketing ties need to be suspended for a very long time.

Why the hell would Pakistan forfeit and lose points? India is angry, not Pakistan. They should forfeit if they have to. Pakistan has zero reason to forfeit.

They can be angry all they want but they need to understand that them being angry has consequences - since they decided to cut bilateral ties with us I see no reason why we can't go full circle and also not play in ICC tournaments.

Completely disagree.

Let's stay the course and allow india to continue their amateur behavior.

A strong statement by the PCB will help the BCCI realize that there are consequences to their "amateur behavior"

You do realize forfeiting is an act of cowardice? Pakistan has nothing to prove here, India is the one with conspiracy theories. Why would Pakistan make any statements?

The way I see it - suspending bilateral ties was also an "act of cowardice" but India still chose to do so for their national interests and public sentiment. Why should we accept their status quo and do as they say i.e. not play bilaterals and turn up for ICC tournaments as if nothing happened?

The fact remains that the India vs Pak WC clash is a cash cow for the BCCI and there would be no better way to impact their bottom line by boycotting this game. It would be a good way to retaliate and make our political stance clear. Once saner heads prevail - the BCCI may finally be willing to come to the negotiating table once they realize that we are serious about suspending ALL cricketing ties and not just bilaterals as the BCCI wants.

Time for PCB to stand up and answer India back Aggressively

I am so frustrated with the soft stance the PCB has always maintained when it comes to BCCI. I have full respect for Team India and appreciate what they do on the field displaying sportsmanship every time we play them. But the BCCI just like Modi gov has been ANTI-PAK from day 1. And im disappointed in our gov, our board to always have a soft corner for them. They also go on the defensive stating we want peace, we deny these allegations and we want to play you etc etc. And yet they now ban our PSL matches from telecasting in India, etc. This shows the hatred they have for us in their hearts, and it can never change. I think we have tried enough for peace and offer of friendship, its now time to take the handshake back and put our boots up to them.
We have to accept that BCCI will never allow us to play India ever for a bilateral series. There goal is to destroy Pak cricket for the bashing we as a team gave them in the 90s when they dreamed of beating us anywhere. We need to respond back aggressively and make it clear that we as Pakistani's dont want to play or step in the same field as you as well and I am up for the boycott of our WorldCup match and ICC match if we have to, but the time has come to man up and throw a rock back in response to the bricks thrown at us all the time. Its a matter of national interest and self respect as Pakistanis and i think its below our degree to even have any sort of talks or dialogue with our so called neighbors in anyway.

Terrible Idea. It will only harm Pakistan. And India will get the points. and further isolate Pakistan cricket.

Isolate us from who? :13:

India?

LOL that ship sailed a long time ago and I do not foresee us resuming any type of ties or engagements with them for the next several years atleast.

England?

Yes it may leave a sour taste in their mouth considering all the marekting, logistics and other work that goes into organizing such a big tournament. However, we are touring them just before the WC anyway and considering the large Pakistani diaspora in the UK - it should be a profitable series for them. We will also play them during the Test championships so I doubt there will be too many issues.

The rest of the countries don't care one bit if we play or not play India in the WC.

Banning the telecast of PSL games in India is by the broadcasters, not by the BCCI. However the BCCI secretly has always screwed Pakistan Cricket and i will not be surprised to see them tell the IPL foreign players to make a choice between the PSL and the IPL

Here's the thing - if PCB does the same as BCCI they will also be known as petty like BCCI. PCB has a moral high ground on this matter, no need to act stupid for the sake of nationalism. PCB is better than that. Indians are looking like schoolchildren on this matter.

When nationalism trumps rational thinking, it turns into cancer. Best to keep it under control.

A strong statement by the PCB will help the BCCI realize that there are consequences to their "amateur behavior"

Sorry? BCCI has done nothing. Reliance, Cricbuzz and DSports acted by their own accord. BCCI hasn't arm twisted anyone to do anything. Why would PCB do anything against BCCI when they are not involved in any of this?

Don't worry you can have as many rest days as you want because Pak-India cricketing ties need to be suspended for a very long time.

Thanks. There weren't any cricketing ties anyways. The only reason India and Pakistan were playing was because of ICC or ACC. If not for those events, there would not be any cricket between the two countries anyways. If PCB wants to boycott the games against India in world events, it is obviously their prerogative, BCCI will have nothing to do with it.

Cricket Club of India and the Punjab Cricket Association have already removed the portraits of several Pakistani cricketers - I believe both are affiliated with the BCCI.

https://sports.ndtv.com/cricket/pul...ricketers-removed-from-mohali-stadium-1994995

In fact the BCCI is already considering the possbility of boycotting the WC game as we speak.

I understand your point of view but I think the "moral high ground" approach has run its course.

We have seen the same rinse and repeat scenario for many years now with regards to cricketing ties with India - I would think maybe a new approach is needed.

All state cricket grounds etc do come under BCCI but they do not interfere with day to day activities of state cricket administration. CCI is not BCCI, they can ask or advice anything, that does not mean BCCI will boycott the WC game. We will have to wait for official statement from BCCI.

The state cricket grounds can do what they want and BCCI does not control all activities there.

Fair enough.

I understand that the BCCI itself is under a lot of political pressure from the Indian govt and hence cannot always make its own decisions - I wish there was another way and cricketing ties could resume but I just do not see it at this point in time.

If this is the case then pcb should use proactive approch rather than reactive approach. And forfeit the match.

Ya, we have already seen how proactive PCB is while dealing SARFARAZ's racist case. It did nothing and got embarrased by ICC. PCB doesnt have the spine to forfeit the match. Most probably if anyone, It will be the BCCI who will forfeit the match. It seems that for some people cricket is way above than anything be it their country or anything and they have tried to prove it with their baseless and wayward logics.

No one destroys anyone..It's the own capability which uplift or damage them..It's own weekness that dumps oneself and then blame others.

so stop blaming India for all the wrong happening in Pak cricket.
There are definitely reasons for which India doesn't won't to play Pak.

But I know the easy way out for Pak cricket. Become powerful and earn the credibility.

Boycotting an ICC event is never a good idea. I am actually observing the situation silently and couple of months before election Narendra Modi has to consider public emotions, but I think it'll settle down in few weeks time. Don't think it'll be wise for GoP or PCB to come with such stand in haste. IND is hurt and their reaction can't say how much logical but definitely understandable; but if PAK reacts like this, I am sure it'll not be taken well at ICC, who'll lose a massive pay day (which eventually will cut every members pie).

May be like me :) waiting on the boundary and see where the ball runs is the best idea for the time being.

Can this stop becoming a politically centred forum... Whatever happens will happen and we will see when it happens.

BCCI trying to take revenge for 1990’s? If they really wanted to take revenge they would have organized a 5 Test’s and 7 one day series to humiliate Pakistan.

This is very easy for the entire world to say when they get to comfortably host India and get $20-30 miilion per series from them while Pakistan has not had the same privilege since 2006-2008. I would like to see how the other nations do with zero international cricket in their countries, no home series against India for a good ten plus years and how they will survive

Good point. I guess how we emerge from this rubble will truly show our character...

There may be reason why there is no international cricket in Pak. Keeping reasons aside it's the weak administration that couldn't convince other nations to play in Pak. then why blame India?

Let's fix the core problem and the talk about these things.

IMO the ICC is also partly responsible for this mess. Everything went to hell when the ICC decided to abandon the FTP and let the individual boards negotiate their own tours and matches. It was never an even playing field since.

ICC may not like our stance but I see no benefit of following the BCCI status quo - which is not playing any bilateral series yet showing up to iCC events and playing India like nothing ever happened.

We need to re-evaluate our cricketing ties with India at iCC events ASAP!

Good point. I guess how we emerge from this rubble will truly show our character...

We already have by successfully hosting the PSL for 4 seasons in a row and making decent money out of it whereas the other major cricketing nations on earth haven't had the stomach to launch their leagues or haven't run it successfully.

The PCB needs to make further efforts to further monetize and focus on the other major cricketing nations on earth.

I agree with you. Don't want to lose 3 points in the WC but if we are a 'Zinda qoum' as we often claim to be we have to take a stand here and put our national pride first . India ain't gonna change ever, we as a nation need to get that in our head. It's Pak who always have shown unnecessary goodwill gestures and begged them to play cricket/sports with us without seeing any response. This needs to stop now.
But knowing our mentality that's not gonna happen. We Pakistanis don't have this sort of aggressive, decisive mentality. We like to take blows on our face and never seem to learn. Just look at the replies from Pakistanis here, that should confirm my point

This argument 'Politics and sport should be kept separate' is only popular in Pakistan among all the nations in South Asia . India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan don't believe in it.
It's only a Pakistani thing. We don't realise it's this thinking which is holding us back. India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan all have progressed in the last decade or so but we don't want to move on from slavelike, colonial mindset, whichs to please ur superior or masters no matter what they do to you, just don't confront them.
Pakistanis deal with india as if they (Indians) have some special right on us they can say/do whatever they want to us at any time but we always have to be defensive. Ridiculous
I don't expect any strong stance from PCB.
