Talented pacer Shahnawaz Dahani, who was the highest wicket-taker in the recently concluded HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) season six, was unable to board the chartered flight for England tour despite a spot left vacant by the departure of former batting coach Younis Khan.

According to sources, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had signed an agreement with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) which included bio-secure bubble arrangements for 37 members of the Men in Green squad. After Younis’ sudden resignation, the team management was keen on filling the vacant spot by including Dahani, who played a key role in Multan Sultans’ title-winning campaign, in the squad.

However, Usman Wahla, Senior General Manager Cricket Operations HBL PSL travelled with the team, instead of Dahani, and will stay with the squad until the completion of the quarantine period. This helped Wahla, who will be on holidays in England, avoid spending money on ticket and isolation but, on the other hand, Dahani’s burgeoning career suffered a potential setback.

The PCB is trying to ensure that Dahani travels to England but if logistic issues can’t be solved, the pacer will be sent to West Indies for the T20I series. He is already part of the Test squad for the series against the Caribbean side.

I thought the competent and professional Wasim Khan had put an end to PCB officials freeloading?

FYI - this gentleman was a Sethi favourite so maybe some questions need to be asked there also.

Wasim has been in power for 3 years. It is more than sufficient time to ensure that these things do not happen.

No point in shifting the blame now. The only plausible explanation for this is that Wasim is incompetent and weak, and not the leader his supporters project him to be.

Besides, this is not the first and surely will not be the last time Wasim has been badly exposed.

Not shifting blame but just putting it in your kind notice when you next bring up comparisons.

Deviating from the topic but I don’t think Dhani should be anywhere near Pakistan team. I am a big fan but he is young. He should spend 2 years in domestic cricket minimum to learn his craft.

Pakistan has done enough damage to youngsters and experienced players alike with their fast track policy.

How can you have a squad without a guy like Dahani

Najam Sethi has a lot to answer for!

Was really looking forward to seeing Dahani bowl in England

I remember this guy being around during CT17.

Not quite sure what he was actually doing throughout the tournament.

Wow. Remarkable.

A corporate fatcat who can easily afford a ticket is going on the board's dime while a player who could have played and should be there misses out.

There is no domestic cricket happening in Pak. It starts around September or even later. But then on the tour, he would have been under Waqar, so it's difficult to judge which situation would have been better.

Best scenario would have been for Dhani to have secured some club cricket contract for a month.

Free riders and vacationers are present in each and every sector of Pakistan whether govt or semi govt.

Now that it has come out in public, taking a stern action would become easier.

Fire him now, media will probably play to PCB's favor here for firing a freebie and the next one will think twice before doing so (maybe?). Mani should come out of the shadows and take that action himself.
But I guess that's all just wishful thinking.

FYI - this gentleman was a Sethi favourite so maybe some questions need to be asked there also.

Why, is Sethi still the chairman of PCB? I dont see any need of reverting to whataboutism.

Uhh, maybe i was living under a cave but as per my info - wasim khan is pcb chairman since past three 3 years.

Was Dahani selected for the tour and then left behind for the lack of space? Its only a public speculation that Dahani should've traveled but may be the selectors don't want to reel him in yet. May be this official is going so he keep a check on everyone and makes sure things run smoothly and players stay in their bubble. He could be that scary Chacha everyone's scared of from back in the day.

PakPassion have been told by the PCB and they have indicated that this story is factually incorrect.

Would it not be worth verifying sources are trustworthy first before sharing such a story like this if it’s factually incorrect ? I’ve seen people raising this on social media and it would be tragic if this guy had done nothing wrong and gets unfairly judged.

PakPassion have been told by the PCB and they have indicated that this story is factually incorrect.

Obviously PCB will deny this, as it paints them in a very bad light.

Now they will make up something- Dahani was never supposed to go, he had some family/visa issues so couldnt make it, etc etc.

Nothing impossible. Neither Wasim Khan nor Mani are competent people to hold the big position in any organization. Both got top position due to their connection and good image to IK.

Nothing new in it. Desis should be used to it. This amount of furore is raised just because it is cricket and there is awareness about it. Wait till the Olympics begin and count the officials and delegates that travel, almost double the ratio of atheletes. Not to mention most atheletes would travel economy whilst the officials business class. Talking about India, Pakistan should be same or worse.

So Dahani isn't in the squad in the first place? I thought he was?

Although debuting against England probably wouldn't be great for him.

Also, the ENglish import to Pakistan cricket hasn't helped improve professionalism, why is that?

Leading wicket-taker at the PSL should have been included in the squad for England. He'd done enough in the first part of PSL to warrant selection for this tour.

Good, he's not ready for international cricket yet.

He's more ready than Haris Rauf is. So are Imran Khan Jr and Mohammed Imran in my opinion.

On the official, can't say I'm impressed by the feeble excuse that he's there for confidential reasons. Sounds like hogwash.

Is this bloke dhani international quality, not seen much of him, didn’t seem all that in the PSL final

National team selections should not be based solely on PSL. Which is league cricket and far from international quality.

What's his first class and List A record? The sample size?

The official traveling is a completely different matter. If he's required for the tour, good. If he's a free loader, then sack him and the one who approved him.

According to some media, the official is responsible for ensuring the team and officials stick to the bio secure bubble therefore his presence cannot be avoided

Yes, absolutely! Wasim Khan should have teleporting capabilities and the ability of God to keep an eye out of everything. Someone farts on the plane, where is Wasim Khan with the air freshener? Room service not adequate at the hotel
for the players, Wasim Khan should have taste tested the food before it was sent out. Mamoon in a bad mood, where is Wasim Khan with his flowers to cheer him up? BRING BACK SETHI!!

So whenever you are caught out, you hide behind don't shift the blame. I bet if you knew Sethi also loved him you wouldn't have commented.
But we expect better from WK and that's why we are critical, unlike you, a person that's looks at the face before you try slapping

But some reports are saying that he's not going to be a part of the bubble and has gone to the UK for a trip and not be a part of this tour.

so I am guessing PCB will be deducting the cost of the chartered flight from his Salary?

so I am guessing PCB will be deducting the cost of the chartered flight from his Salary?

But on the other hand would PCB really send someone on a chartered flight to do nothing apart from go on a holiday.

I'd rather PCB just clarified what his role is and that would quash the rumours.

There are still many hangers on in the PCB. It has for decades been a cash cow for the well connected, whether they are Army, politicians, bureaucrats or Journalists and none have care a jot for PK cricket, they just enjoyed the free buffets.

Is this bloke dhani international quality, not seen much of him, didn’t seem all that in the PSL final

He looks like a real talent, and express quick. Seems like a real character as well, I think we have a lot of bowling talent available, that is why I am surprised that we are picking some guys who are fast but shown no real bowling intelligence above others who have shown they know how to bowl in tight situations.

Is this bloke dhani international quality, not seen much of him, didn’t seem all that in the PSL final

He's young and looks promising but is completely undercooked, has played just 1 season of FC cricket. Basically a continuation of the system for pacers which has given Musa, Hasnain and Rauf so far.

I chose the wrong profession. I should have become a PCB bureaucrat. Free loading, vacation while supposedly working, kia baat hai!

There are some civil servants who regularly outlive govts - same for some PCB guys.

This is really wrong. Dhani should have been on this flight and this needs to be sorted out.
Babar and Misbah and Waqar must put their foot down.
Players must always come first.

Is this bloke dhani international quality, not seen much of him, didn’t seem all that in the PSL final

Does it matter. He is a player and should be deemed more important for travelling as compared to some leech administrator, who offers no value other then a waste of space.

Leading wicket-taker at the PSL should have been included in the squad for England. He'd done enough in the first part of PSL to warrant selection for this tour.

We have seen the dangers of fast tracking youngsters without much first class experience based on single PSL seasons before.

It will be better if he plays atleast another 2 domestic seasons and perform before picked for Pakistan.

Do you realize how ridiculous you sound? Perhaps not. If you did, you would have been embarrassed to make such a lame post.

This is not about farting and bad room service; this is about a PCB official freeloading and hogging the spot of a young player who deserved to be in the squad.

As the CEO of PCB since 2018-19, if such things are happening on his watch 3 years into his tenure, he has to take the blame and share responsibility. There is no way around it and there is no side-stepping the issue.

But we all know that Wasim Khan has been a failure so none of this comes as a surprise to anyone. In fact, the reality is probably a lot worse than what we see/hear because not everything is picked up by the media.

PakPassion have been told by the PCB and they have indicated that this story is factually incorrect.

It is obviously a damage-limitation exercise. Surely no one is naive enough to believe that there is no truth to it.

PCB are in a spot of bother and this news leak does them no good. They don’t have any options other than the “it did not happen” card, hoping that the news will fizzle out in a few days and they will sweep it under the carpet.

Don't think he deserves to be in the squad. Too early.

Everything else you say, if true, is shameful on PCBs part.

You’ve just proven so many people wrong, including myself. You actually have the ability to recognize absurdity. Now please apply this to yourself.

I don’t think you’ve ever worked in the corporate sector or at a large organization before. Day to day activities are not under the ‘watch’ of the CEO. It can take many years to unearth deep rooted organization issues including bad actors like this Sethi puppet. Secondly, not all action is made public so just because you aren’t privy to the PCB’s employee HR files doesn’t mean action isn’t being taken. You, nor I have little to no information on what transpired in regards to ticketing or how this person took a seat on the plane. Also, wasn’t the legitimacy of this story refuted anyways. You like to jump on anything Wasim Khan related, he’s been living rent free in your head for the past three years.

What would resolve this issue easily is clarification from PCB as to what the official's role is on this tour.

Simple and effective.

But by saying his role is confidential and not disclosing what he is actually doing on the tour means that rumours start.

Well he's in the Test squad.

Some would say that he's probably more suited to T20s than Tests perhaps at the moment.

It takes time to prepare a talent for international cricket these days. PCB must start preparing their talents properly before introducing these players in international cricket.

If they start giving out an organisation structure (matching job titles / responsibilities to staff) the media and citizens will come to see that much like PIA (and other similar orgs) there is much signalling and not much doing.

The actual number of people who are involved in operational capacity vs those employed may yield a very skewed metric.

Best to deal in smoke and mirrors - provides PCB with a healthy amount of room to manoeuvre and “re-assign” responsibilities as deemed fit.

Of May be he doesn't have any role 😕

This is not a “deep-rooted organizational issue”. I won't expect a weak man like Wasim who is always crying about hostility and criticism from the media and ex-players to address the deep-rooted issues anyway.

He doesn’t have the bottle for it.

However, if such gaffes are happening 3 years into his tenure and a player is losing his seat because of a freeloading PCB official, you have to blame the top leadership.

When this happened under Sethi, Shahryar, Zaka Ashraf etc., it was their fault. Now that it is happening under Saint Wasim, it is not his fault.

The legitimacy of this story has not been refuted. Only someone incredibly naive would think so. All PCB have done is state that it did not happen which means nothing.

As Saj mentioned above, they are yet to explain what this official’s role is on the tour, and since they are not doing that, it clearly implies that he is just a free-loader who hogged the spot of a player, and yes, Wasim should cop the blame irrespective of the mental gymnastics his apologists perform.

I wouldn't be surprised if he has no role, and that he's just tagging along for no reason.

The PCB won't disclose his role primarily because of the media hype created around Shahnawaz Dahani. He's basically a local superstar at the moment, and if the media finds out that he was denied a well-deserved chance on the white-ball tour to England because some dude didn't want to pay for his own plane ticket, it will once again dent the so-called "professional" facade that the PCB has tried so hard to create.

Haider + Umaid getting caught along with this event, coupled with PCB's prior incompetence regarding the PSL bio-bubble, in addition to the dead meat that's carried on every tour despite any performance will leave a very bad impression of the PCB in the media, which is something they'll be trying to avoid.

The PCB will want to bask in the glory of successfully hosting the PSL6 in Abu Dhabi, but I think they know that people will forget all about that if they find out that some random person hogged a much-needed spot on the tour for either Dahani, Wahab, or Malik.

I cannot understand how the role of anyone on that chartered plane can be confidential. What can he possibly be doing that has to be kept a secret?

The only thing that comes to mind is that the true reason for this man being on the plane is so embarrassing that the PCB cannot admit it openly. That's why it is being kept secret. The reason could very well be similar to that reported therefore - i.e. the guy has no true function but was on that plane for fun.

Well he's in the Test squad.

Some would say that he's probably more suited to T20s than Tests perhaps at the moment.

Good tactic from Pakistan to choose him in the test than t20s as thier is we're we are lacking bowlers.

Don't understand all this hype of Dahani. It seems 1 PSL season is all it takes for someone to become part of the national team. It will be in Dahani's interest if he is not selected for the next 3-4 years and instead plays 4 day matches in First-Class.

He played 1 season of domestic he needs 1 more season preferably

He looks a genuine fast bowler in the making and has performed quite well. Why is that considered hype?

Talented pacer Shahnawaz Dahani, who was the highest wicket-taker in the recently concluded HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) season six, was unable to board the chartered flight for England tour despite a spot left vacant by the departure of former batting coach Younis Khan.

According to sources, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had signed an agreement with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) which included bio-secure bubble arrangements for 37 members of the Men in Green squad. The underlined above is a conflicting opinion and more of an allegation rather than news reporting.

First, the opinion, "This helped Wahla, who will be on holidays in England, avoid spending money on ticket"

We must hear Wahla's side of the story instead of blindly believing in what the report says since it has been made to sound like, Wahla actually chocked the spot of Dhani and got onboard by force; however, the actual reason was NOT Wahla. It was the logistics that did not work out on time for Dhani.

Second, the report says "on the other hand, Dahani’s burgeoning career suffered a potential setback."

What does Wahla got to do with it? How is he responsible for Dhani's "career suffering a potential setback"?
There is no connection between the two.

Yes, indeed it may be deemed morally wrong; however, if PCB had already PAID for that empty seat and there was no REFUND for it, then why let it go wasted? Someone had to use it, and if Wahla was there on the right place and on the right time, then so be it.

Perhaps the right way of doing this was, make Younus Khan pay for the losses PCB had occurred due to that empty seat and cost of bio-secure bubble and only then, let the seat go empty on the plane.

Or perhaps sell the seat to Wahla on a half or slight discounted price to recoup some of the losses.

Deviating from the topic but I don’t think Dhani should be anywhere near Pakistan team. I am a big fan but he is young. He should spend 2 years in domestic cricket minimum to learn his craft.

Don't fully agree.
There is a granularity in it that you MUST understand.

Hear me out,
If it's a talented young and emerging BATSMAN, then I tend to agree with you. In almost all cases, talented young and emerging BASTMEN must be grinded enough through the domestic and A games to get seasoned and battle hardened enough before they are transitioned into the national squad; HOWEVER, in case of a pace BOWLER, there is always enough room to play with.

Young talented bowlers learn A LOT in playing above their grade team, especially in international trips. Yes, they may get the initial battering but there after a certain point, there isn't much they learn in playing more n more domestic. Matter of fact, they tend to degrees because the domestic batsmen starts learning how to counter their natural talent and armory.

So they must be introduced into higher and tougher level cricket but only those very few ones that do have a genuinely high promise and potential. You can't just interject any TD&H for a pace bowler to be infused into the national squad.
Perhaps Musa Khan or IK Jr. are such are examples. Not enough talent or skill yet they sent him to Australia with the national squad. Ridiculous!

IMO, Dhani is the guy who can be our potentially our next great just like Wasim Akram and Waqar Younus who were fast tracked into the national squad, and they never looked back.

IK Jr did well enough in matches he played in decent bowling conditions from what I remember. Personally I think his qualities of bowling with good bounce and line have been overlooked in favour of flash young speedsters who can bowl fast, but have not developed enough bowling control or intelligence.

Personally I feel we could add either a batsman or a bowler to the squad and it would be more helpful than getting some official over here who can't even give good reason for his plane ticket.

Given the Naseem Shah experience, best for Dahani to play atleast 2 seasons of domestic cricket especially the 4 day format to see if he can keep his form going.

But then again Mohd Irshad in 2003-04 was touted as the next Shoaib Akhtar and everyone was raving about his speed and he was also getting 5 wicket hauls frequently in domestic and A matches. But the PCB instead of drafting him in the side immediately back then, adopted the policy let him play in domestic cricket for another 2-3 seasons and then we will see, then came the action changer Aqib Javed and Irshad was just never the same bowler again.

I'd rather PCB just clarified what his role is and that would quash the rumours.
That’s completely unfair.

The PCB only got caught out last night. They haven’t had time yet to invent a fictional role for this freeloader to have as his excuse for displacing a player from the team.

So of course it’s confidential. It will be confidential until someone can invent a plausible lie to justify it.

What a disgrace. The people in PCB who arranged this should be fired. However this is Pakistan so i doubt their will even be an investigation.

It works best when they are played young, they then mostly fail and go back and improve. This only works if players are given playing opportunities to improve on good wickets.
