PCB signs broadcast deal with PTV deal (2020-2023), expect to earn $200m

60 percent of 200mn? Thats 120mn. It may be difficult to get that because of the cost involved.

Or 60 percent of 100mn. Thats 60mn.

If PCB has to foot the marketing expenses than yes. It may drop further.

Indians people watch domestic and International matches on terrestrial network? Or they getting subscription?

Most of the Pakistan population are living in villages, and villages don't have cable TV facility. How PCB will earn 200m?
Are they going to remove PTV Sports from Dish antena?

People are paying PTV fees as part of the utility bills and PTV wants this increased from Rs 100 to Rs 200. Cable Operators also have to pay PTV a fee for airing them on their cable network. The money is going to come from there

PTV fees is 35, may be they will make it 100.

200 is too high for most of the people just to watch 2 TV channels.

Don't think they will have a choice, it gets deducted from their utility bills.

You are confusing two separate revenue segments, the former relates to funding the country's national broadcaster (encompassing all divisions of the network), those funds are ringfenced and are not part of the scope of this deal. The PCB will only be able to extract a share from the cable subscriptions related to the sports channel.

All domestic and Tests are on Star sports a pay channel.

All international odis and t20s are simultaneously telecasted over Star and the terrestrial Doordarshan.

Doordarshan has to give 75 per cent of its revenue earned to Star.

For IPL Doordarshan gets selected matches on a hour delayed telecast with, 50:50 revenue sharing.

The ideas behind the rights sale seem sound, how they work out in practice will be interesting, and I am not convinced. If WA can pull this off, PK cricket will be on a secure financial footing and he would have more than justified his job and salary.

Its pretty clear like in india they have Star 1 2 3 etc ...ptv must go that route as well atleast ptv 2.

A more detailed explanation by Dr Saab.

However my understanding is that the PCB will take the responsibility for producing their own content and then giving it to PTV for distribution. The PCB will also help PTV upgrade its equipment, technology. The greater risk is actually PCB's as production costs are not cheap. I agree with CricketJoshilla criticism that the PCB has bent over bakwards and given PTV a very large fee for this arrangement.

You agreed with me. I will buy a lottery today. :)

Add to the above, marketing costs. That's also likely PCBs headache.

Assuming the PTV modernizes its cameras, equipment and gets its local staff upgraded. It will force Geo Super to follow suit otherwise they will be wiped out

Wasim Khan Terms $200 million Deal a Game-Changer

SPORTS

By Aina Maria Waseem

On Sep 18, 2020

LAHORE, September 18 (Online Int’l): The Pakistan Cricket Board said the $200 million three-year deal broadcast agreement would change the landscape of Pakistan cricket and promised that the money would be ring-fenced to ensure it was reinvested into cricket.

In 2015, the PCB had sold international rights, which are still up for grabs, for a five-year period at about $12 million a year. The projections of the next five-year international cricket rights are valued at $6 million a year.

“This $200 million domestic cricket rights is a game-changer that will change the landscape of the Pakistan cricket forever”, PCB Chief Executive officer, Wasim Khan said while talking to APP here.

“We will ensure the money is properly ring-fenced and not wasted. This deal is for the future of Pakistan cricket and needs to be strategically reinvested into cricket so that our next generation of cricket administrators and cricketers can reap the benefits of this historic achievement. The PCB plans to invest around PKR 15 billion over the next three years on enhancing domestic contracts and the wellbeing of our age-group, men and women cricketers, strengthening our domestic cricket competitions as well as up-gradating stadia and infrastructure.”

“Furthermore, we will build academies and centres of excellence in provinces, which will create job opportunities for over 100 former cricketers as coaches and managers. We also plan to restart our universities cricket, investment in grass roots cricket and improving players’ earning and welfare”, Wasim Khan said.

The PCB also explained it had acquired space on PTV Sports on which the PCB will run its own produced content, while the deal with I-Media Communications Services was for cable distribution and securing the transmission of PCB content broadcast on PTV Sports.

“Unlike previous times, the PCB will produce its own content, including live matches, which content will be owned by the PCB and will be placed on PTV Sports channel for Pakistan only. The PCB has not granted PTV satellite broadcast rights and has only granted terrestrial rights, which have must be granted to PTV being the national terrestrial broadcaster.”

“The reason for giving cable rights separately to I-Media Communications Services is because the PCB needed to secure its content against what has been happening in the past i.e. extensive piracy and leakages of our signals that greatly diminished the value of PCB matches and PCB content and also resulted in such unauthorized and illegal distribution of cricket matches being of extremely low quality which resulted in our millions of cricket fans in Pakistan not receiving the quality product that they deserve to see their beloved sport”, the PCB said on its corporate website.

The PCB clarified that PTV Sports was not paying a fee to the PCB nor was the PCB paying a fee to PTV Sports.

“The cost that PTV Sports will incur for televising the matches, they will take that from the commercial airtime the PCB and PTV jointly sell on content during the broadcast. Therefore, there is no grant of rights, and there is no requirement for that process and, as such, no need of a tender. Even otherwise of what PCB specifically requires for broadcasting its content the only entity capable of that is PTV in Pakistan”, the PCB said.

It's an estimate how much PCB will earn from ad revenues, cable distribution and other commercial revenue from this deal.

It seems too optimistic in my opinion. But kudos for trying I suppose

It’s funny they talk about ensuring no piracy on PTV because I watch Game on Hai on unauthorized YouTube channels from third parties

Good luck extracting money from cable operators.

PCB's effort is commendable but revenues will be much less than projected.

Guys stay on topic please.

Apologies, but aren’t the rights regarding domestic versus satellite coverage part of this topic?

It’s a genuine question as to the details of this deal with PTV and if anyone can clarify it would be appreciated.

Please discuss that but we dont want to be sidetracked to ways of watching TV etc.

Upcoming national t20 cup will show us the PCB production standards.

Did Previous year QEA trophy matches were in HD quality?

Does anyone knows about previous years domestic broadcasting rights deals? How much PCB earns through domestic matches?

Am reading that the PCB has invited the likes of Ramiz Raja, Wasim Akram, Bazid Khan, Shoaib Akhtar to commentate during the National T-20 cup. The commentary will take place in both English and Urdu and will involve a professional pre-game, mid game, post game analysis, real time interviews with fans, players during the game.

Fantastic lineup of commentators. My ears hurt last year.

The pre & post match shows, will that content be owned by PTV or PCB?

Do we know which company the PCB will be using for production?

So the NT20 Cup will definitely be available in HD?

Some reports say TowerSports have got the contract for production, they are a local company & were also part of production team for PSL along with SportzWorkz(main partner based in Singapore)

Major problem with this is that PTV is still stuck in the 70's where the quality was good for that era but now it has massively changed but they are still stuck in that era with them cameras, sets, colours, graphics and many many other things.

If they can get a revamp and put themselves on top of the league by switching to modern technology and get proper technicians who know how things have changed and evolved since then it is good as it will enrich the viewing experience.

At the moment all their channels are so blurry and their sets and colours are so painful to the eyes to watch as you can not sit and watch their channels for more than 10 mins and that even goes for the older generation now too.

Too much revenue share just for distribution. PCB will bear all the cost and is taking all the risk.

If advertising doesn't bring enough then its PCB that will be taking the hit. There is no fixed payment here.

$200 million is PCB's share. Also PCB will make a play with cable providers for having cricket on their network. 13 million+ houeholds have cable. PCB met with cable union too. They are going to get a rs from every 13million per month for having cricket on them so it can work

Production will be PCB's. Like PSL. And as part of the deal, PTV will have to upgrade their audio and video output too

So are we expected to see HD coverage for national T20 cup or will it be the same old PTV coverage.

The production of the matches will be done by an international production company. This was confirmed by Dr Nauman Niaz on Game on hai show

ISLAMABAD: The new domestic cricket model and Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) recent deal with PTV are game changers for country’s cricket and will help produce world’s best cricketers in the years to come.

This was stated by Chief Executive PCB Wasim Khan. during his conversation with Dawn here in Islamabad. Wasim spoke about domestic and international cricket, particularly about expected tours of the world’s four best teams in next two years.

He said that Pakistan is all set to host Zimbabwe in November this year and during the next two years, New Zealand ( in September 2021), South Africa and some other top teams of the world are expected to tour Pakistan.

Talking about the recent broadcasting deal between PCB and PTV, he said PCB expects to earn US$200 million over the next three years which will be spent on promotion of cricket. He added that Pakistan is blessed with best raw talents which needed platforms to excel. “Under new domestic system, young talent will participate in high-level of competitions with reduced numbers of teams and high standards of game to hone their skills properly.”

Wasim further said that from the upcoming domestic session, Pakistani cricket fans will see domestic players in action on their tv screen and television coverage of domestic events will also be a big boost for young players.

He added that under the broadcasting deal with PTV, all matches of upcoming National T20 would be shown live by national broadcaster while Quaid-i-Azam Trophy- the country’s prestigious first class event, would be covered live and highlights will also be shown.

“There are 31 matches of Quaid-i-Azam Trophy and we will ensure at least one match of each team should be broadcasted live,” the PCB CEO said.

Asked about the growing concerns of cricketers over abolishment of departments cricket, Wasim said: “Frankly speaking the PCB is not a job-providing organisation. Rather our main function is to take steps to promote cricket in the country to make a strong team at national level,” he said and added that currently Pakistan is ranked 7th in the world that shows that the old system failed in producing good players who could help the country to win mega international events.

He said that for making Pakistan one of the great teams in world, changes in domestic system were imperative. “As far as job are concerned, we are going to set-up 90 cricket association under the already established six regions that means over 90 coaches and managers will be required. So the players, who faced job issues could be accommodated in associations,” he said. “ These two initiatives — the new domestic system and the deal with PTV to promote domestic cricket are game changers, I tell you,” he said.

Talking about PCB’s last two-year performance, he said: “Relocating the entire PSL here and bringing international cricket back to Pakistan are among the major achievements of the current management. Efforts are also underway to improve quality of cricket through High Performance Centre and through revamped domestic structure,” he said and added that the PCB has already engaged country’s legendary cricketers to help it make Pakistan one of the best teams.

“Currently, a number of retired cricketers are associated with the PCB and they are playing very good role to improve skills of young players,” he said.

Asked about the recent meeting of head coach Misbah-ul-Haq, senior all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez and Test captain Azhar Ali with Prime Minister Imran Khan, reportedly without PCB’s permission, Wasim said: “They [players] have been asked to explain their position to PCB chairman Ehsan Mani. A meeting is going to be held in coming days in this regard,” he said.

If PCBs share is 200mn after giving pTv 42.7% and deducting expenses, you are looking at gross revenue of close to 400mn plus.

Thats projection is very difficult to meet.

Pointless to speculate on the exact financial windfall of this arrangement as there is no payout or fixed guaranteed money exchanging hands.

The PCB and PTV must have presented a reasonable financial model, projections with reasonable assumptions in order to get the govt to approve and sign off on it. All of the risk is the PCBs and they seem very confident in executing this.

Projected revenues and profits to the PCB could be lower, as projected or maybe even higher. Only time will tell in the next 3 years

The PCB was not going to get a better deal than this given their situation and Covid therefore I am extremely happy to see them show some initiative, creativity and out of the box thinking.

Ehsan Mani as silent and lethargic as he looks is not exactly a bum or dumbo or senile as people perceive him to be. The guy has not been the ICC chairman and on the ICC finance committee for nothing

Too low.

PCB will make more. But they should shoulder ptv with more responsibility. Like marketing expenses etc. 42.7 percent for just telecast is way too much.

I have a feeling it is more about a long term plan for upgrading all technology at PTV. PCB get to televise domestic cricket, create new revenue streams and immediately increase their own revenues in a severely depressed commercial market. So seems a win-win to me. Both PTV and PCB need money and I am sure it has been an agreement with both their interests in mind.

Consortium of Tower Sports and SportzWorkz awarded production rights for domestic events

• Production rights of Pakistan-Zimbabwe series also awarded to the same consortium

• “This is another milestone in our renewed vision of providing top-quality coverage of domestic cricket and Pakistan’s international home fixtures,” says PCB Director Commercial Babar Hamid

• National T20 Cup First XI matches to start at 3pm and 7.30pm; to be broadcast live on PTV Sports

Lahore, 27 September 2020:

The consortium of Tower Sports and SportzWorkz has been awarded production rights for the National T20 Cup, Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and the Pakistan-Zimbabwe limited overs series, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced today.

The rights were awarded following an RFP process that involved PCB’s pre-qualified production partners.

Tower Sports and SportzWorkz produced the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 and now enter Pakistan domestic cricket bringing a wealth of experience and quality following PCB’s record USD200million three-year TV and cable broadcast deal with PTV Sports and I-Media Communication in Islamabad earlier this month.

Director Commercial PCB Babar Hamid: “This is another milestone in our renewed vision of providing top-quality coverage of domestic cricket and Pakistan’s international home fixtures. We made a major breakthrough by signing a potentially game changing deal with PTV Sports and I-Media Communication in Islamabad earlier this month.

“The consortium of Tower Sports and SportzWorkz worked with us in producing the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 and we have full trust and confidence in their ability of delivering quality and world-class production for the two most coveted tournaments of the 2020-21 domestic season and the Pakistan-Zimbabwe home series.

“What excites us further is the development of a local talent production pool that can deliver a complete Pakistan-based production in the years to come which we are confident will match the quality produced around the world.”

Chairman SportzWorkz Chris McDonald: “We are proud to partner with Pakistan Cricket Board once again. This year, our efforts in the HBL Pakistan Super League resulted in quality cricket coverage for the fans. With the upcoming National T20 Cup, Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and Pakistan-Zimbabwe series, we once again aim to deliver on PCB’s vision of providing quality coverage.

“Along with PCB, we are putting in an unprecedented effort in ensuring the domestic cricket coverage improves and our fans are able to see a difference in the way domestic cricket is packaged.”

The National T20 Cup will be broadcast through a 14-camera set-up including HD cameras, modern day titles and graphics packaging. Over the next few years, the PCB aims to up-skill local production resources and create a local talent pool that will provide quality cricket coverage, which will be relayed to TV sets across Pakistan and cricket fans around the world.

Meanwhile, the PCB also announced the match timings for the National T20 Cup First XI tournament, which commences from 30 September at the Multan Cricket Stadium and shifts to Rawalpindi on 9 October. The first balls of the first and second fixtures of a day will be delivered on 3pm and 7.30pm. The final, to be played on 18 October at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, will begin at 7.30pm.

All 33 games of the National T20 Cup will be shown live on PTV Sports and a total of 11 matches of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy first-class tournament, which begins on 25 October, will be beamed live from the National Stadium, Karachi.

There weren’t teo production teams this year. It was the same consortium as this one which produced PSL this year. That was the year before where Indian broadcaster withdrew.

To the people asking about the quality. The quality I think is pretty good. Just some glitches in this year’s PSL with that no ball call, etc. But overall really good quality if they at least live stream it because I guess PTV’s output is still in SD and still shoddy. But overall a massive upgrade.

They will be using 14 cameras though, which is less compared to the international games or PSL where they use around 28-30 cameras which I assume means there won’t be hawkeye available where they use 4 or 6 cameras. Even though there are a no. of questions but one thing which is certain is that there is going to be a massive upgrade and we will have good quality pictures.

I doubt domestic matches will be shown outside Pakistan, illegal streams seems to be only way to watch domestic games outside Pakistan

That's crap hopefully pak passion posts small highlights anyways thankyou

I try searching YouTube and other sites for highlights of the IPL matches but just can never find it.

I hope the PCB puts similar controls in place for their content

BCCI doesn’t even upload highlights of their home games and similar with IPL. Other boards do like ECB and CA and so does PCB. There is no black and white. I think they should be uploading highlights and short video and be extremely active on every platform to get the eyeballs and that is the key for getting sponsors on board. They actually are currently going that way. They have been really good with promos, creating hype and just now released a promo as well. There is a clear indication that they are now putting domestic cricket as their priority and in the long run this should help them a lot.

In addition to above, it's very important if they are to attract any sponsors for domestic Cricket

BCCI have a contract with hotstar

I said this in exactly the same context as well, mostly for domestic cricket.

The work that has been put to hype up this competition is brilliant. I have been following Pakistan domestic cricket for a number of years and I have never felt this vibe and the buzz has been great. This is exactly what you should be doing. Attach a value and respect these players because they are the cream.

Eventually what this broadcasting deal with PTV will do is that it’ll bring in the eyeballs and hence the involvement of sponsors because of the reach of PTV in Pakistan and if managed properly can surely be a game changer.

Yes, they do sell the rights separately whether that being satellite, terrestrial or digital. But you see in order to get the eyeballs you have to show your product and to me the worst social media accounts and promotion through these platforms is ridiculous. I know they try to have the complete control over their content but the hype through social media from BCCI is negligible and quite honestly I think PCB does a better job than them. But they can get away with it because of the shear population and hence market.

Which is also why they get a better price for their product.. and also helps hotstar improve its quality...boards and associations would never know how to sell their product, its the talent of networks/channels - star/espn thought BCCI how to make money.. in South Asia , esp when we come to think about it in longer term.

They actually are currently going that way. They have been really good with promos, creating hype and just now released a promo as well. There is a clear indication that they are now putting domestic cricket as their priority and in the long run this should help them a lot.

The PCB should require fans to pay a one time subscription fee in order to access the highlights of all PCB and psl games. They will be able to monetize this very effectively

I am pretty certain the franchises got triggered to take action after hearing this deal

Which is also why they get a better price for their product.. and also helps hotstar improve its quality...boards and associations would never know how to sell their product, its the talent of networks/channels - star/espn thought BCCI how to make money.. in South Asia , esp when we come to think about it in longer term.

That is true and I agree that in South Asia boards don’t know how to control the piracy and everything related. BCCI has done that effectively but I am talking about fans’ perspective which I want to see. I want to see last night’s fabulous save by Pooran. I want to chime on old footage between India and Pakistan on YT. And I think there will be number of people who would like to see that but aren’t allowed.

You can’t convince me that they can’t do anything on the retirement of MSD. I saw nothing from official accounts. They could’ve done so much. They have the worst social media presence than PCB and that tells you something. BCCI gets away with doing nothing for the promotion of the game on social media but they have a fabulous broadcaster who are not just broadcasting matches for them but the elevation of players’ profile and effectively being PR for BCCI.

I think what they are trying to do is they want to take it to every home and hence PTV. They have roped in “I Media”for exactly what you are doing. But on the social media and different platforms they do that for the promotion of the game. Look at how basketball is doing that. They don’t strike with copyrights on the uploaders even. Cricket is so far behind in this regard.

They should continue doing it and once the product attracts eyeballs they can actually look out the other avenues but at this point in time it’ll be extremely stupid to go this route when fans don’t really care much about domestic cricket.

You have to hand it to the present PCB administration. This is a Covid time period but they are not shying away from heavy expenditures and investments in the national cricket academy, domestic cricket, tv production, hiring the best available commentators. They are banking and gambling on the fact that these investments will result in substantial paybacks going forward. Apart from Najam Sethi where he undertook the risky PSL adventure, all the other past cricketing boards were extremely lethargic and happy with the status quo

Hopefully this will be positive for us, at some points last year the coverage on PP was better than the TV coverage on Prime Tv, they need to get rid of those cringey presenters as well , bring us into the 21st century

Tower Sports and SportzWorkz widen PCB production remit

Media companies Tower Sports and SportzWorkz have expanded their association with the Pakistan Cricket Board by agreeing a new production deal with the governing body.

The consortium has been awarded production rights for the domestic National T20 Cup and Quaid-e-Azam Trophy first-class tournament, along with the forthcoming Pakistan-Zimbabwe limited overs series. The rights were awarded following an invitation to tender process that involved PCB’s pre-qualified production partners.

In February, the PCB appointed Tower Sports and SportzWorkz to handle broadcast production for the 2020 Pakistan Super League, the first edition of the Twenty20 competition to be played entirely in its home country.

Pakistan-registered Tower Sports and Singapore-registered SportzWorkz succeeded the Blitz and Trans Group consortium, which handled production for the 2019 PSL after IMG Reliance pulled out of its production contract.

The latest production deal comes after the PCB this month agreed a new three-year domestic broadcast rights and cable distribution contract with state broadcaster PTV Sports and I-Media Communication Services, respectively.

PTV Sports signed a satellite broadcast deal, with I-Media to ensure cable distribution, and the contracts will run across the 2020 to 2023 cycle. The PCB said the agreement has been structured to provide for increasing revenues over the term of the cycle, adding that it expects to earn in excess of $200m (€171m) over the three-year period.

The broadcast agreement is for Pakistan only, with the PCB stating it will soon finalise the award of its broadcast rights for international territories as well as launching a new structure for its digital media rights.

Scheduled to commence tomorrow (Wednesday), the 2020 National T20 Cup will be broadcast through a 14-camera set-up including HD cameras and the latest graphics packaging. Over the next few years, the PCB aims to up-skill local production resources and create a local talent pool.

All 33 games of the National T20 Cup will be shown live on PTV Sports and a total of 11 matches from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, which begins on October 25, will be televised live from the National Stadium, Karachi. Pakistan’s series against Zimbabwe consists of three one-day international and three T20 games. It will run from October 30 to November 10.

Commenting on the Tower Sports and SportzWorkz deal, PCB commercial director Babar Hamid said: “This is another milestone in our renewed vision of providing top-quality coverage of domestic cricket and Pakistan’s international home fixtures. We made a major breakthrough by signing a potentially game changing deal with PTV Sports and I-Media Communication in Islamabad earlier this month.

“What excites us further is the development of a local talent production pool that can deliver a complete Pakistan-based production in the years to come which we are confident will match the quality produced around the world.”

The PCB is currently seeking a new international rights deal for the PSL after terminating its contract with Techfront International FZE.

Techfront International FZE had signed a three-year contract for the PSL’s international media rights running from 2019 to 2021, but the PCB this month said the deal had been ended due to a “series of contractual violations”.

These guys did the production of PSL, yet the quality of PSL on PTV sports was still pathetic. The production isn't the whole problem, PTV as a channel is the bigger problem. Will PTV be able to distribute the HD telecast? PCBs best bet would be to live stream on Youtube as well, at least for those outside of Pakistan.

PCB to shell out 90 million PKR extra for production after PTV pulls out

Umar Farooq

12:01 AM ET

The PCB will be worse off by nearly PKR 90 million as a result of the withdrawal of state broadcaster PTV (Pakistan Television) from bidding for the rights of a production deal for the series against Zimbabwe and domestic cricket. A consortium led by UAE-based Tower Sports and Indian production company SportzWorkz ultimately won the rights for production.

The winning bid was worth PKR 359 million - that is, how much it will cost the PCB to outsource production of those matches. PTV's bid, made alongside another Dubai-based production firm IPG, came in at PKR 270 million and it would've been the lowest had the broadcaster not pulled out.

A PTV official said a lack of time in the bidding process meant "procedural requirements" could not be completed. "There was acute paucity of the time needed to complete the procedural requirements which wasn't really possible leading to their withdrawal."

PTV's withdrawal did come as a surprise given that discussions between the broadcaster and board had been advanced, and a deal all but finalised. In one email exchange, PTV had revised their bid figure to include the cost of commentators such as Ramiz Raja, Wasim Akram and Bazid Khan for the tournament. That took the value to PKR 270,581,367. The next day, however, PTV pulled out forcing PCB to go to the second lowest bid.

"The PTV withdrew their offer on 23 September 2020 prior to a decision on the final evaluation of their offer or those of the parties who had submitted proposals under the earlier initiated process," a board spokesman mentioned.

"With the first match scheduled to air on 30th September 2020, PCB awarded the Production Rights to the lowest bidding party, i.e. TowerSports/Sportsworkz. PTV partnered with IPG to submit a technical and financial offer for this coverage. PCB evaluated PTV's bid in good faith in order to ensure that the offer was technically compliant as per PCB's requirements."

The rights include 33 games in the National T20 Cup starting from September 30, 11 matches of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and a series of three ODIs and T20Is against Zimbabwe in Multan and Rawalpindi.

The PCB has signed a three-year broadcast deal with PTV to broadcast all Pakistan's home bilateral commitments as well as all domestic cricket. PTV Sports is one of only a handful of sports broadcasters in Pakistan, although its production capacity has long been in need of an upgrade. As a result, the broadcaster had teamed up with IPG to ensure that technical benchmarks of the bid were fulfilled.
