In the mid-2000s, we could often rely on two senior middle-order pros in Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Yousuf to bail us whenever we lost early wickets.
Now we have two rejects of the Inzamam era in Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez, neither one of them specialist batsmen, taking two key middle-order positions. With all due respect, if these two are your "experienced hands" then there's something wrong. Neither Hafeez or Malik average above 30 this year against non-minnows in ODIs. Everyone is aware of their weaknesses against pace - exposed in the New Zealand whitewash in January.
If we don't move on from these two at some point, then Steyn, Rabada and Ngidi will see to their retirements before the 2019 World Cup.
