Peter Moores commits to Nottinghamshire as Head Coach for the next three years

What I don't understand though is why Pakistan can't just hire some top-quality data professionals from CricViz or some other international data firm?

Very timely.

Lahore, 9 September 2021: Pakistan Cricket Board has signed a three-year agreement with internationally renowned scoring platform CricHQ and world’s leading cricket data providers CricViz.

CricHQ will be PCB’s live scoring partner and will digitise scoring from grassroots level all the way up to the top-tier of Pakistan cricket which is the First XIs of the six Cricket Associations. The partnership will enable the PCB to collect data and analyse player performances using match reports and statistics.

Additionally, CricHQ will also provide video automation and capturing solutions for domestic matches in order to help coaches and players analyse performances.

CricViz, widely regarded as one of the leading data analytics software in the world, will give the PCB analysts and coaches the licenses to their query tool. The analysts and coaches will also be trained on the software to help in preparation of pre-match, during match and post-match analysis using the software.

Both partnerships are in line with the PCB’s plan to upgrade its data analytical wing to provide state of the art data analysis, match plus player impacts etc. These tools will help in modernising Pakistan cricket in terms of data analysis and selection of players.

The players are also set to make considerable gains as the tools are designed to help improve their performances while overcoming the flaws in techniques that might creep in their game from time to time.

India has embraced Science and Technology to excel in its cricket like no tomorrow. A key reason for their victory in Australia even with a severely weak team is how beautifully Bharat Arun advised and planned to eliminate the off side against the Australian batsmen by making the bowlers bowl at the off middle stump and packed the leg side field. End result the Australians run rate slowed down and instead of scoring 500-600 runs, they were now having to work with 200-300 runs which significantly reduced the pressure on the Indian batting line up and increased the pressure on the Australian bowling line up.

India as the tour went on did not have world class bowlers but the limited Indian bowlers stuck to the plan given to them by Bharat Arun and bowled to their field.

In comparison when the Pakistani think tank ie coaches cannot process or under stand and come up with anything remotely like this, how can you even blame the players who are just a product of their unprofessional environment?

Absolutely! The test that just concluded at the Oval was another example of a game plan that was executed to precision even though they didn't have a very successful 1st session. They chocked the English. Each move was well thought out.
I can't forget when Virat said in an interview something along the lines of . . Cricket is a game of VERY small margins . .
Take 2 fielders . . Fielder A: very fit, athletic. Fielder B: Not as fit. Not as athletic.
A batter hits a shot in the air.
Fielder B from the fence runs in full speed . . makes an acrobatic dive . . gets finger tips on the ball and drops the catch . . the whole team goes like . . Great effort!! Commentators go like, that was a tough catch . . fantastic attempt
Same shot . . Fielder A runs from the fence . . more agile, faster, fitter . . gets to the ball quickly and takes the catch . . Commentators go like . . ran in and took a simple catch!
Those are the margins they're thinking about . .

and we've got present and ex-players saying . . Fitness?! What fitness . . Bowling and batting is what matters! Who is this Mickey . . he has destroyed our culture by going fitness fitness!

Another example:
Sohaib Maqsood had a fantastic PSL . . but against leg spinners, he faced 23 balls and scored only 10 runs in the same PSL
Guess what we do when Pak is playing England . . we send him in when Adil Rashid is bowling . . Lo and Behold he got out . .

There are countless such examples . . I always say, talent is only part of the story. . we don't even do the controllables well . . there's a great saying, if you control the "inputs" well, "outputs" will take care of themselves . . we are beyond pathetic at controlling the inputs . .
you give the same team and put them part of a professional setup, the results will be very very different!

All these data & stats & u still end up selecting asif ali :facepalm

Just signed and will probably come into application in coming days.

Though even with all the data Asif Ali will still appear in results due to his SR in domestic T20s. However, one can expect that data of his repetitive cross bat dismissals is also provided to either improve him or not select him. :smith

Great move. Next step should be to hold workshops and training sessions for regional head coaches, NCA coaches and subsequently all the city association coaches so that they know how to utilize the data and overall capabilities of the system which will be at their disposal.

They have got the tool from possibly one of the best providers, now need to utilize it to its full capacity which can only happen if the coaches across different levels are fully aware of what this is all about.

+ Whether they will be respected by PCB or goons
How Steve Rixon salary issues happened and how MA was fired, is for everyone to see

Very embarrassing episode but one that hopefully PCB learnt from.

Rixon was a huge loss and our fielding hasn't been the same since he left.

Hey, I'm just glad PCB listened to my very useful suggestion. You don't expect common sense from them much, so this certainly comes as a surprise.

Too bad, they couldn't have started using CricViz before announcing the squad. They could have found out some interesting facts about some of the guys their resident YouTube pundit has selected for the World Cup...

What Pakistan needs is not a coach. What it needs is a analyst and planner who properly professionally devises game plans and demands the players stick to it. Even with our limited players, if they just control the controllables properly, they can out achieve themselves on the field.

Surely Rixon left a template, a methodology. He was with the Pakistani Team for 2 years and must have spent a considerable amount of time with the local NCA coaches and the players also must have got experience from his drills. Why cannot anyone in the NCA, Coaching staff mimic his methods? Is everyone so incompetent?

May be this is how our local coaches/staff spend the days :
1) calls from some local chieftain that his affiliate must play
2) spending time to make a case for him (by providing him easy opportunities and making things difficult for performer)
3) Spend time making phone calls, accepting gifts,

Now: where is the time to actually focus on job

Unless PCB/grassroots are free from political interferences ; we will see these problems over and over again. Even BCCI is not politically controlled; yes, they have one or two individuals who are there to oversee BCCI activities but they don't meddle with team selections, promoting unmerited players, and or create unnecessary controversies

I heard Azhar Mahmood has emerged as leading candidate of bowling coach for Pakistan team.

Azhar has spoken to us and told us that PCB is in touch with other candidates about this role.

Asked Notts about these reports re Moores and the Pakistan job and/or PSL - they won't comment on it. No denial or acceptance of the reports either.

If they do secure a foreign coach, hopefully get gets paid properly

Peter Moores probably is not right choice , unless PCB backs him properly and wants to work towards long term development.

seems like waqar and azhar taking it in turns to milk the PCB, get in mohammed akram as bowling coach.

Mohammad Akram can be a pretty good option and did a decent job in his first stint as well with Pak when pace bowling talent was really low due to after vacuum left by the spot fixing Saga.

I wasnt impressed by Azhar in his first stint especially his work with the bowlers in the longer formats but he was good with the development and tactics in T20Is. However, now after a short stint with England's national team, few seasons in PSL and recent stint at the 100 I think he possibly is much more equipped and mature as the bowling coach than before when he didnt have possibly any experience when he took the job. In the meanwhile if he has also worked upon his development as a coach in longer formats then he wont be a bad option now by the looks of it.

So I personally think both can be good options. I would be maybe bit more inclined towards Mohammad Akram if he is one of the candidates (He should be) as he has worked at a higher position as head coach/director for PZ for number of years so he must have grown a lot as a coach and in terms of a cricketing mind as well.

This is way beyond the comprehension level of Ramiz Raja!! He is a joker and will fail miserably!

Does anyone know when PCB intend to put new coaches for Pakistan team?

They should promote coaches who performed well in domestic instead plucking out Azhar Mahmood from nowhere as he had a taste of it before and didnt do quite well tbh.

Should go with Abdur Razzaq , and I think Saqlain and Razzaq who are in charge will surprise many in the upcoming series with nz , eng and in the T20 WC.. Even though they are given hacks to work with in Asif, Khushdil, Azam khan and Maqsood.

If they can still put up a decent playing 11 then would easily win more matches than expected.

Whoever comes in most likely will get a short run even if it's a long term contract, people have extremely short fuses in the sub-continent. It's good improvements in domestic cricket have been made, now they need key qualified and experienced individuals who should be given a long rope, I don't think Peter is a bad option providing he is given a decent run; but what's really in it for him....it's always surprising when a coach takes the top job in Pakistan apart from perhaps the challenge of it all, toughest coaching job in the world

Peter Moores has committed to Nottinghamshire for the next three years after penning a new contract with the club.

The Head Coach has led the Green and Golds to three trophies since taking over in 2017, as well as overseeing a 2021 campaign that sees them in the hunt for the LV= Insurance County Championship title heading into the final fixture against Yorkshire.

“We have been a force in the limited overs game throughout Pete’s time in charge and, during the past couple of seasons, we have seen a young side make significant progress in the County Championship as well,” said Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell.

“The three white-ball trophies the club has won, as well as the consistency shown in qualifying for the latter stages, constitutes a record that’s as good as anyone’s in the county game.

“Meanwhile, strides were made during the shortened 2020 season to make us more competitive in red-ball cricket and, this year, we have been back to where we want to be in terms of our performances in the First-Class game.

“Pete’s presence within our setup has been a key factor in terms of our recruitment because people want to work with him, and he has also successfully committed to bringing through home grown players with the likes of Lyndon James, Liam Patterson-White and Joey Evison all set to play a big part for the club long into the future.”

Moores, previously a Championship winner as Head Coach of Sussex and Lancashire, as well as stints leading both the ECB’s National Academy and England, has further ambitions to fulfil at Trent Bridge.

“Being Head Coach of Nottinghamshire is a privilege,” said Moores.

“Representing a club like ours is about making a contribution to something bigger than yourself and trying to take it to a better place than you found it.

“With the trophies and hard-fought matches won, with the friendships formed and with seeing players get better, we’re making memories along the way.

“The members and supporters at Trent Bridge are knowledgeable, passionate people who rightly demand total commitment from those who represent their club, and that will continue to be my goal for as long as I’m here.”
