I generally don't start threads, but just wanted to have a thread on Kyle Verryene, the young South African batsmen. I've followed his progress closely, looks like a very promising prospect for South Africa.

Very composed and is scoring tons of runs in domestic cricket, recently got a double hundred and might get another centuty today in the 4 day domestic competition.

In my opinion, he could be the next big thing to emerge from South Africa.

Yes, he's been scoring runs consistently in South African domestic cricket. He's younger than Zubayr Hamza and Janneman Malan among the emerging batsmen in SA cricket, and is a specialist wicketkeeper too.

I imagine that the view by Graeme Smith and Mark Boucher is to ease his way through into the test team, but results might force their hand.

I have heard a lot of good things about him too. South Africa should look to include him in future squads as he has done well in domestic cricket.

Smashed another 100 today. Surely he will be in the ODI squad for Pakistan I believe.

Proteas limited-overs captain Temba Bavuma said Cape Cobras batsman Kyle Verreynne is ready to fill Faf du Plessis's boots. Du Plessis hasn't retired from limited overs cricket, but he's not part of the Pakistan ODI series squad. Verreynne is in red-hot form after two consecutive 4-Day Franchise series tons for the Cape Cobras.

Proteas limited-overs skipper Temba Bavuma said rising Cape Cobras batting tyro Kyle Verreynne has identified himself as a long-term replacement for former limited overs captain Faf du Plessis. Du Plessis hasn’t retired from the shorter formats, but his longevity can’t be put past the upcoming cycle of this year’s T20 World Cup in India and the 2023 World Cup to be held in the same country.

Verreynne is in the limited overs squad fresh of a first-class best of 216* against the Warriors and 109 against the Knights where the Cape Cobras scored 500-plus runs in both games. His progression in red ball cricket has been there to see with the 2018/19 season seeing him collect 583 runs at 44.84 with five 50s.

He stepped up in the 2019/20 season with 551 runs at 55.10 with two 100s and three 50s but he truly showed up in the recently concluded 2020/21 4-Day Franchise Series with 680 runs at 97.14 with two 100s and four 50s. He didn’t feature in this season’s truncated One-Day Cup and didn’t distinguish himself too well last season with 83 runs at 20.75 in four matches. However, he left a calling card in the 2018/19 edition with 453 runs at 64.71 with one 100 and four 50s. He hasn’t quite asked the same pressing questions in T20 cricket with small returns of 107 runs at 35 in five games for the Cape Town Blitz and 64 runs in two innings for the Paarl Rocks without being dismissed in the Mzansi Super League editions. Bavuma has seen enough of Verreynne to see that he could be an integral part of Proteas limited-overs batting unit. In his three pre-Covid ODI’s against Australia last year, he made 48, three and 50. His debut 48 in Paarl saw him come in at 33/2 and crafted what became an innings resurrecting partnership with Heinrich Klaasen (123*) in a game SA eventually won.

“Faf was a big player in the team, and no one can dispute that. He made the necessary runs and led the team excellently. Whoever will fill Faf’s shoes will have to be a determined individual who knows their batting story. A player like Kyle, with his talent, determination and ability, is definitely a player who is capable of filling those shoes,” Bavuma said. “Kyle’s had a taste of what international cricket is and knows what is required to stay at this level. He has been around our squad and a player we have looked at. It’s also helped his cause massively that he’s been a massive run-scorer at domestic level. He’s dominating and he’s definitely a person we’re looking at to fill Faf’s position." Having missed out on five ODIs because of Covid-19 to get Project 2023 Cricket World Cup up and running, Friday’s first ODI against Pakistan in Centurion will be one of many ODIs where SA will gauge where they are with regards to the best teams like England and India. Bavuma provided clarity with regards to where the players for the upcoming International Cricket Council tournaments will come from.

“When you look at our ODI squad, we have 22 players and that’s a big squad. The guys who are here can take comfort from the fact that the World Cup squads will be coming from this group. 90 percent of this squad will be coming from this group, so it's important that guys understand and acknowledge the fact that there is an opportunity,” said Bavuma. “It’s also important that guys also know where they fit in within that squad. It’s nice to see new faces and guys being rewarded for their hard work. It’s important that they keep putting in those performances. Guys will say it's easy to play yourself into the national level, but maintaining it is the tough part with regards to maintaining the performances that people are accustomed to."

This is good to see, Kyle is certainly the future of South African cricket and should be a part of all formats.

With David Miller out of the next ODI and T20s, he could be in line for a chance.

Good innings already today, honestly I never had a doubt about him performing.

Seems in the Van Der Dussen molde . SA need to play him over Klassen. He has not seemed phased by a difficult situation.

If SA stopped the silly quota system black players would also get better. Nothing like competition to force improvement. Ngiidi and Phehluckwayo are going backwards because they have no competition.

Very impressed with him.

Nice array of shots and looked very composed at the crease.

Looks like these days, every wicket keeper batsman seems becoming the next big thing for their country. :inti

South African domestic cricket system is pretty good.Pakistan selects players based on one or two good performances that is why players like Asif and Danish get picked. The pitches also don't help. The batsmen and bowlers struggle in SENA because they are not used to quick and bouncy wikcets.

10 players missing today for South Africa but he's not in the starting XI - surprising.

Befuddling decision to leave him out today, he's their most in-form batsman at the moment. Transformation quota compliance can't be an excuse when they've got other white players such as Lubbe, van Biljon, and Linde in the middle order.

Below article paints a worrying picture of reasons for selection for SA side - is it effected by petty provincialism?

CAPE TOWN - I am not a great believer in conspiracy theories. I generally like to live my life based on facts.

But, I have also come to understand over the years that the cliché "where there is smoke, there is fire" usually means the kitchen is burning up.

And that brings me to the omission of Kyle Verreynne for the first couple of T20 Internationals against Pakistan.

Social media was in outcry after the Cape Cobras wicket/keeper batsman was left out of a virtual South Africa "A" side, dressed up as the Proteas, due to the IPL absentees and injury-enforced absence of captain Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen.

I did not blindly join the choir calling for Verreynne's inclusion in the T20 team as I believe some players are better suited to different formats.

However, I do feel very strongly about Verreynne's omission along with his Cobras teammates Janneman Malan and George Linde from the preceding ODI series.

Verreynne and Malan both eventually played the final ODI and immediately made an impact. Malan contributed 70 off 81 balls, while Verreynne struck 62 off 53.

Personally, I could not understand why Malan did not partner former captain Quinton de Kock from the outset in the opening two ODIs. Malan had struck a century in just his second ODI against Australia last season and subsequently topped the domestic run-scorers charts in the Momentum 1-Day Cup. It is mystifying that Heinrich Klaasen was retained on the basis of his Australian series form but not Malan.

The Proteas brainstrust, headed by coach Mark Boucher and convenor of selectors Victor Mpitsang, instead backed Aiden Markram throughout the ODI series.

Please don't misunderstand me here. Markram is an unbelievable talent, as the last two T20Is at the Wanderers have shown, but I can't help wonder if he would be receiving the same amount of gametime were he not a product of Boucher's former franchise, the Titans?

It seems rather coincidental that the likes of Markram, Klaasen and now even Lizaad Williams, who moved north from Newlands to SuperSport Park at the beginning of the past season, are being afforded the opportunity to settle into the national team while others need to bide their time.

Cobras all-rounder Linde has been arguably the most in-form domestic cricketer across all formats for the past 12 months, and has taken virtually every chance afforded him at international level, but yet he still finds himself down in the pecking order below Warriors veteran JonJon Smuts in the ODI format. It's laughable.

Equally, promising Cape Cobras left-armer Nandre Burger was picked for the away Pakistan T20I series and did not even come close to cracking a game, but yet Williams now plays two consecutive matches at home.

Everyone knows there was no love lost between the Bouchercoached Titans and Ashwell Prince's Cobras and that a genuine “NorthSouth” rivalry ensued when they were doing battle the past few seasons.

Malan, Verreynne, Linde and Burger are all Prince's products. Let's hope that the national team's progression is not being put at a risk due to petty provincialism

Boucher's coaching record is pretty shabby thus far, if he's favouring the Titans players over others then that's frankly pathetic.

Verreynne with his maiden Test Century. Finally he has shown what he is capable of.

Needs to kick on from here though, he has been inconsistent so far. Rickelton is pushing for that WKB slot as well and this is a very timely century by Kyle Verreynne.

Never pay too much attention to our domestic cricket. Players rarely improve to a level decent enough for international cricket. Instead keep an eye on our u/19s. That's were our talent comes from.

There's some hype/expectations towards Keegan Peterson too. But I'd put my money on Brevis (provided he keeps his head straight). He's already made R6 million before representing the Proteas, that's a huge concern for us. Will he be motivated to play Test cricket? Or will he pull an AB/QdK on us? Bad role models

Verreynne brings up his 3rd Test hundred for the Proteas with a masterful display of calculated aggression and powerful stroke play!

His unbeaten 105* off 133 balls in the 1st innings of the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka showed his ability to dominate under pressure.

Kyle Verreynne reaches a fine half-century off 70 balls on Day 2 of 2nd Test against Pakistan, showcasing his intent and form. A streaky boundary off Hamza takes him to the milestone as Pakistan continue to search for a breakthrough.

He scored a century and then got out, but he had already done the damage to Pakistan in the second Test
