London Bridge has been cordoned off by police, with a BBC journalist reporting hearing gunfire.

BBC reporter John McManus said he saw a group of men involved in a fight on the bridge.

Police then arrived and shots were fired, he said.

The Met Police said a man had been detained and it believed a number of people had been injured. The force has advised people near the scene to follow directions from officers on the ground.

McManus told the BBC News channel: "Just a few minutes ago I was walking across London Bridge on the south bank to the north bank of the bridge.

"There appeared to be a fight going on on the other side of the bridge, with several men attacking one man.

"Police then quickly arrived, including armed police, and then a number of shots were fired at this man," McManus told BBC News.

"Police have now cleared the bridge, everybody has been told to move back and now on the northern side of the bridge, but there are more shots going on," he added.

"I can't see what's happening now because we've been moved out of the way but there are shots going on, and you probably hear the police sounds as well.

"Everybody has cleared the area, the entire bridge has been moved, and right on the northern part of the bridge, right up until quite near the Bank of England, is being cleared."

A number of people are believed to have been injured after a stabbing at London Bridge, police have said.

The Met said one man had been shot by police and it was treating the incident "as though it is terror related".

The force earlier said it had detained a man. London Ambulance Service has declared a "major incident".

The BBC's John McManus, at the scene, said he had seen a group of men in a fight on the bridge. Police then arrived and shots were fired, he said.

British Transport Police said London Bridge station was currently closed and no trains would be stopping there.

Police have advised people near the scene to follow directions from officers on the ground.

The prime minister tweeted he was being updated on the incident and wanted to thank police and all emergency services for their response.

Home Secretary Priti Patel also tweeted that she was "very concerned" about the incident.

McManus told the BBC News channel: "Just a few minutes ago I was walking across London Bridge on the south bank to the north bank of the bridge.

"There appeared to be a fight going on on the other side of the bridge, with several men attacking one man.

"Police then quickly arrived, including armed police, and then a number of shots were fired at this man."

A video has emerged showing police officers aiming guns at a white lorry that jack-knifed across London Bridge.

The footage shows several officers surrounding the vehicle before moving to the rear to check its container.

London buses can be seen either side of the lorry while three police cars are parked next to it on the bridge.

Another video filmed from a nearby bus showed the apparent suspect appearing to be shot as he lay on the ground.

Another man in a suit and jacket could be seen running from him, having apparently retrieved a large knife.

Witnesses have spoken to the BBC about what they saw.

Amanda Hunter, who was on a bus on London Bridge at the time, said: "All of a sudden [it] stopped and there was some commotion and I looked out the window and I just saw these three police officers going over to a man…

"It seemed like there was something in his hand, I'm not 100% sure. But then one of the police officers shot him."

Noa Bodner, who is stuck in a restaurant on London Bridge, told BBC News channel: "There was a rush of people coming in and everybody basically dived under the tables.

"We were told to keep away from the windows, people that came from the outside were saying that shots were fired."

She said the manager ran to lock the doors and staff told people to move away from the front of the restaurant.

She said the mood was "calm", "some people seem a bit distressed, but they're being looked after by friends or staff".

And the man shot dead was “bearded”. Cant see the logic behind:

1. This being classed as a Terrorist incident. There are news of stabbings in London every other week.
2. Shooting and Killing the man instead of arresting or paralysing etc

I find this very odd. Is it a coincidence such attacks at Westminster/London become prominent closer to a general election? Hmmm.

London Bridge terror attack: Witnesses 'ran like hell' after gunshots

A woman describes how she saw three police officers approaching an alleged attacker before one of them shot him.

Witnesses have described how they "ran like hell" after hearing gunshots following a knife attack on London Bridge.

Several people have been hurt, including some seriously, in the stabbing.

A man was shot and killed by armed officers on the bridge following the terror attack. Police say he was wearing a fake explosive device.

Witness Jackie Bensfield, 32, said she asked to be let off a bus on the bridge after hearing "five or six" gunshots.

The nurse departed the bus and then "ran like hell" to escape the shots.

Another witness Amanda Hunter, who was also on a bus across the bridge when she heard shots fired, said: "(The bus) all of a sudden stopped and there was commotion and I looked out the window and I just saw these three police officers going over to a man."

She told the BBC: "It seemed like there was something in his hand, I'm not 100% sure, but then one of the police officers shot him."

Footage on social media appeared to show armed officers surrounding a person on the ground before discharging a weapon, while a member of the public was seen removing a large knife from the scene.

Several bystanders had reportedly restrained a suspected knife attacker before police arrived.

Witness Craig Heathcote told Sky News: "I was walking across the bridge. I reached the north side and someone came running towards me saying 'get out of the way, someone's got a knife'.

"I could then see on the other side of the bridge a big scuffle of people trying to get someone to the ground.

"I just immediately called 999. It was quite hard because cars were passing in the way of what was happening.

"A police car appeared from the bridge and two police officers got out and started taking over. There was lots of shouting and them trying to restrain him or get people out of the way before they fired the guns."

Another witness Reem Yousef said: "I was below the bridge, about 30 metres to one side of it. I heard shouting. I looked up and it appeared to be potentially four or five people - it looked like it was a fight.

"Then I heard someone shouting 'get back, get back'.

"People started running across the bridge and then I heard two gunshots and at that point obviously I ran."

Connor Allen, who was in his van on the bridge when it was evacuated, said: "Everyone just started running, you heard these pops and that was it. We just got out the van and started running."

An unnamed witness told Sky News: "We heard from our office some shots being fired, or what sounded like shots. We looked out of the window and suddenly the entire bridge was sealed.

"The police were there and they ended up carrying what looked like injured people off the bus."

Another witness wrote on Twitter: "I'm in Borough Market after shots have been heard on London Bridge. The bridge is cordoned off. The market has been evacuated.

She later posted: "Tourists are screaming, shop owners urged into their shops."

Joe, who was held in his office following the incident, told Sky News: "We saw loads of police cars heading towards the bridge. We saw a man on the ground and police pointing guns at him. We later saw a lady being carried away from the scene."

He said there was a "pretty tense" atmosphere.

He said more than 10 police cars were at the scene and officers were "running around with guns getting every one away from the bridge".

An onlooker called Zack said police officers almost knocked him over as they ran towards the incident.

"Then loads of cars with sirens all rushed past me at full speed," he said.

Acc to the latest updates on BBC 2 members of the public have also died, in which case this is indeed some kind of criminal act (and not just a pre-emptive one by the police). Its good that police handled it quickly but whether its Ok classify it as a Terrorism act?

We can only evaluate once more details are known. As for Boris, I doubt that he will fall this low to stage such an attack.

Two people have lost their lives and the usual plebs are turning this into point scoring. Classy.

Lots of knee jerk reactions from people who do not even live in the UK.

These people do not realise that a false flag attack does not change what happened, it only puts the those responsible into question.

Its typical sheep mentality, eat whatever is fed to them without using their own brain cells.

And this is the real danger in society, a 10 min unfortunate attack has duped millions.

This is the classic bait and switch. The news cycle has changed, and the propaganda has helped switch the
attention from what really matters, to what will now be the message of national security.

These politicians will now milk the situation with the sheep lined up to be fed.

Most obvious suspects behind this.

Corbyn cannot come into power by any means.

I wouldn't put it past them but remember last time there was a spate of terror attacks in 2017, and Theresa May called for more police on the streets hoping to sound as the "Law and Order" Prime Minister - people rightly asked "who the hell cut the police numbers in the first place ?"

Two members of the public have died after a stabbing attack at London Bridge, in which police also shot dead the suspect.

The Met Police has declared the attack a terrorist incident.

The suspect, who died at the scene, was wearing what is believed to have been a hoax explosive device, police said.

Videos on social media appear to show passers-by holding down a man. An officer arrives, seems to indicate to the group to move, and fires a shot.

A Whitehall source confirmed two members of the public died to the BBC but gave no further information.

Details are still emerging and Neil Basu, the head of UK counter-terrorism policing, said the force was keeping an open mind over the motive.

He said officers were called to a stabbing at a premises near the bridge just before 14:00.

BBC journalist John McManus, who was at the scene as it unfolded, said he had seen a struggle on the bridge, with several men restraining one man. Police then arrived quickly and a number of shots were fired at him, he said.

In footage shared on social media, the man could be seen being pinned down by members of the public. Another man in a suit could be seen running from him, having apparently retrieved a large knife.

Mr Basu told a press conference: "A male suspect was shot by specialist armed officers from City of London police and I can confirm that this suspect died at the scene."

He added that a "wide cordon remains in place" following the incident.

Mr Basu said: "Officers continue to carry out extensive searches in the area to ensure there is no further threat to the public."

There was no intelligence of anything about to happen, sources say, and police reacted to events as they unfolded.

At the start of this month, the UK threat level was lowered from severe to substantial - reflecting an assessment from the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre that an attack was likely rather than highly likely because of a relative decline in activity.

The challenge for police and security services is that low-tech attacks - involving knives or vehicles - and often carried out by lone actors can be hard to spot in advance since they involve relatively little preparation and communication.

But in the wake of previous incidents in both the UK and other countries, police have been prepared for this kind of incident and seem to have been fast to intervene, taking few chances, although members of the public were also involved in restraining the individual.

The priority for police and MI5 now will be establishing the identity of the individual, whether he had any links or associations and whether there is any ongoing related threat.

The man was wearing what is believed to be a hoax explosive device, Mr Basu said.

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner said attackers wear fake suicide vests for a couple of reasons: To add to public panic and in some cases to ensure police shoot them dead.

To some attackers, martyrdom is preferable to capture, trial and spending many years in prison, our correspondent added.

Mr Basu said the force would have extra police patrols across the capital.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who returned to Downing Street from his constituency, said the emergency services and members of the public who intervened "represent the very best of our country".

He said: "This country will never be cowed or divided or intimidated by this sort of attack and our values, our British values, will prevail."

The prime minister will convene a meeting of the government's emergency Cobra committee at 21:30.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan thanked the members of the public who showed "breathtaking heroism" in running towards danger - "not knowing what confronted them".

The Independent Office for Police Conduct said it has begun a mandatory investigation into the shooting.

London Bridge station and Tube has now reopened after it was earlier closed, Network Rail said.

But trains may continue to be delayed, cancelled or revised while services are reinstated, it added.

Both the Conservatives and Labour say they have suspended election campaigning for the night following the attack.

Bus driver Mustafa Salih, 62, was travelling from Borough High Street towards London Bridge where he saw emergency vehicles and the police cordon.

He told BBC London: "A police officer came up to me and said 'turn off your engine, get off and run'.

"I looked up and I could see a crowd of people coming towards me.

"One woman was crying. I ran back down to Borough High Street. It was all very scary as we did not know what was happening."

London Bridge was the scene of another attack, on 3 June 2017, in which eight people were killed and many more injured.

This latest attack comes after the UK's terrorism threat level was downgraded on 4 November from "severe" to "substantial", meaning that attacks were thought to be "likely" rather than "highly likely".

The terror threat level is reviewed every six months by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, which makes recommendations independent of government.

Breaking news : Hague stabbing. 3 people injured.

[BBC TV NEWS]

I think most of us who think for ourselves know the pattern now, and how this will play.

Tbh, the Tories are walking the election, They are is no reason for any conspiracy, in the end it will turn out to be some mentally ill guy.

A mentally Ill guy with a suicide vest (albeit it was fake)??
We all know where this is heading...

Glad they put him down.

My sister is in that area every single day. I don't care about whether they had time to work out if it was a real vest or not. Rather him than any of my loved ones, or any innocent people for that matter.

Two people died. Let that sink in. Could have been people you know.

London met doing their job very well
I’m just glad they’re protecting us

As for the nutcases , obviously not has been to unradicalise the Muslim populations and more steps need to be taken to make sure these lunatics are off our roads

If you look most of these guys, they are mentally ill. This week the guy who was found guilty in Manchester was a paranoid schizophrenic.

Could well be a white supremacist diehard from that description to be honest. Doesn't mean anything at this stage.

Fantastic!! Labour supporters already out with their conspiracy theories. And this is exactly the reason why most in this country will vote Conservative, people who will act tough on terror and not look into playing victim to get some votes. Leave that for Corbyn boys

very weird, most of the guys who tackled him were ex-prisoners too, they'd all been in a criminal rehabilitation conference at the nearby Fishmongers Hall.

the Tories have been in power last 9 years, they let him out on a tag as well as cutting police numbers by 20K so how have they been acting tough?

Ha! A convenient excuse for the government to blame MI5 - the perfect cover up!

Do you even realise you are agreeing with the conspiracy theorists?

I doubt it.

The attacker went on the rampage just before 2pm (1400 GMT), targeting people at Fishmongers’ Hall near London Bridge in the heart of the city’s financial district - the scene of a deadly attack by Islamist militants two years ago.

Out on the street, half a dozen bystanders tackled the suspect to the ground and grabbed his knife.

A video posted on Twitter showed police dragging one man off the suspect before an officer took careful aim. Two shots rang out. The man stopped moving.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who has called a snap election for December 12 and is due to host NATO leaders including US President Donald Trump next week, praised those who took on the man for their courage and said Britain would never be cowed.

“I ... want to pay tribute to the extraordinary bravery of those members of the public who physically intervened to protect the lives of others,” Johnson told reporters in Downing Street.

“For me they represent the very best of our country and I thank them on behalf of all of our country,” Johnson said. “This country will never be cowed, or divided, or intimidated by this sort of attack.”

He said the incident was now thought to have been contained and vowed that anyone else involved would be hunted down. Downing Street said he would later chair a meeting of the government’s emergency security committee.

Britain’s top counter-terrorism officer, Neil Basu, said specialist armed officers from the City of London police shot the suspect, who died at the scene. He said a hoax explosive device was strapped to his body.

“Our Counter Terrorism detectives will be working round the clock to identify those who have lost their lives, to support all the victims and their families,” London police chief Cressida Dick told reporters.

“We are also working at full tilt to understand exactly what has happened and whether anyone else was involved.”

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, Johnson’s main opponent in the election, said he was shocked by the incident and that his thoughts were with those caught up in it.

Campaigning has been temporarily suspended.

Kicked in the head
Commissioner Dick said the attacker launched his assault at Fishmongers’ Hall, a grand building at the northern end of the bridge.

One of those who confronted the attacker there told the Daily Telegraph newspaper that he had kicked him in the head to make him drop the knife.

Stevie Hurst, who gives tours of the capital, said he and a colleague took on the suspect with about five others.

“I jumped in and kicked him in the head to make him release his knife. A few others did so,” he told the Telegraph. “He was shouting ‘get off me, get off me’.”

As three armed police officers circled the suspect in the shadow of the Shard skyscraper, western Europe’s tallest building, one bystander in a suit and tie grabbed the knife and swiftly retreated as police engaged.

The city’s mayor Sadiq Khan said ordinary Londoners had demonstrated “breath-taking heroism” in disarming the knife-wielding attacker despite him having a device which they did not know to be a hoax.

“What’s remarkable about the images we’ve seen is the breath-taking heroism of members of the public who literally ran towards danger not knowing what confronted them,” Khan told reporters.

The ambulance service declared a “major incident” in the area and London Bridge station, a busy commuter hub, was closed for a number of hours.

Previous attacks
During the 2017 election campaign, London Bridge was the scene of an attack when three militants drove a van into pedestrians and then attacked people in the surrounding area, killing eight and injuring at least 48.

The militant Islamic State group said its fighters were responsible, but the British authorities have cast doubt on those claims.

The month before, a suicide bomber killed 22 children and adults and wounded 59 at a packed concert hall in the English city of Manchester, as crowds began leaving a concert by US singer Ariana Grande.

In March the same year, an attacker stabbed a policeman close to London’s parliament buildings after a car ploughed into pedestrians on nearby Westminster Bridge.

Six people died, including the assailant and the policeman he stabbed, and at least 20 were injured in what police called a “marauding terrorist attack”.

Earlier this month, Britain had lowered its national terrorism threat level to “substantial” from “severe”, its lowest level since 2014.

If the perpetrator was Muslim it's a terrorist attack if not just an attack by a lone gunman or something. The media is indirectly trying to give some Muslim angle to it. The media who tells us these stories are told what to say by the government. They'll tell us that he is Michael Muhammad a recent convert to Islam Islam who after his release from prison became a jihadist hell bent on taking innocent lives. Not dismissing that Muslim's have terrorists but the question is always who benefits from all of this?

Usman Khan profile: terrorist who wanted to bomb London Stock Exchange

Usman Khan, the suspect shot dead in the 30 November 2019 terror attack near London Bridge, had been released from jail after being convicted of terror offences, including plotting to attack the London Stock Exchange in 2010.

Khan was part of a gang of nine extremists from Stoke-on-Trent, Cardiff and London who were sentenced in February 2012 at Woolwich crown court. He had planned to establish a “terrorist military training facility” on land owned by his family in Kashmir, according to sentencing remarks.

Khan, at 19, was the youngest of the group. In his sentencing remarks Mr Justice Wilkie said Khan and two others were “more serious jihadis” than the others.

Khan was originally classed as never to be released unless deemed no longer a threat but this condition was later lifted.

He was freed in licence in December 2018.

Wilkie said Khan and his co-accused Nazam Hussain and Mohammed Shahjahan were planning to fund and establish the terrorist training school, with Khan and Hussain planning to leave the UK in January 2011 to train.

In a July 2013 report the independent reviewer of terrorism wrote that Khan was one of one of three men from Stoke who had travelled to Pakistan’s federally administered tribal areas (Fata) and planned to fund, construct and take part in a terrorist training camp in Kashmir, with a view to carrying out terrorist acts in the future. They were part of a group that had copies of the Al-Qaida English-language extremist magazine, Inspire, and had considered putting letter bombs in the post.

The extremists talked about setting off a pipe bomb in the toilets of the London Stock Exchange, as well as in pubs in Stoke, the Woolwich court heard. A handwritten target list belonging to the group listed the names and addresses of the then London mayor, Boris Johnson, the Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral, two rabbis, the US embassy in London and the stock exchange.

Group members were bugged and heard claiming that fewer than 100,000 Jews died in the Holocaust and talking about how Hitler had been on the same side as the Muslims because he understood that “the Jews were dangerous”.

The sentencing judge, Wilkie, said theirs was a “serious, long-term venture in terrorism” that could also have resulted in atrocities in Britain. He noted: “It was envisaged by them all that ultimately they and the other recruits may return to the UK as trained and experienced terrorists available to perform terrorist attacks in this country.”

The men were mostly British citizens apart from two born in Bangladesh. The Met said at the time that the operation to round up the gang involved 1,000 police and staff at its height.

May the victims rest in peace.

Good riddance to this trash. Should have neutralized much before.

Commendable that members of the public took this tool on even though he was wearing a suicide belt/vest - fake yes but they didn’t know that.

Picture of the alleged attacker from BBC

Just saw the pic of the attacker and he looks a bit mentally disturbed. Such people shouldn’t have been released back in public.

Also the news say that the incident began earlier inside the building and it was a ‘targeted’ attack rather than a random one. The other members of public who were fighting with him on the bridge were also released prisoners who came out of the same building.

So what makes it a ‘terrorism’ act?

More on the attacker

Police have named the London Bridge attacker as Usman Khan, who was previously jailed for his part in a plot to bomb the city's stock exchange.

Khan, 28, was out on licence from prison when he killed two people and injured three others in the stabbing attack on Friday, before he was shot dead by armed police.

He had been living in Stafford since being released from prison on licence last December, the BBC has been told.

In 2012, he was sentenced to indeterminate detention for "public protection" with a minimum jail term of eight years.

This sentence would have allowed him to be kept in prison beyond the minimum term.

But in 2013 the Court of Appeal quashed the sentence, replacing it with a 16-year-fixed term of which Khan should serve half in prison.

At the time, Lord Justice Leveson said: "There is an argument for concluding that anyone convicted of such an offence should be incentivised to demonstrate that he can safely be released; such a decision is then better left to the Parole Board for consideration proximate in time to the date when release becomes possible."

Born and raised in Stoke-on-Trent, Khan was originally jailed along with eight others.

The men, inspired by the ideology of al-Qaeda, had been under surveillance by MI5.

The group of nine had been engaged in several plans, one of which involved a plot to put a pipe bomb in the London Stock Exchange.

Khan and other plotters from Stoke had also been heard discussing potential attacks in their city, including leaving explosive devices in toilets in pubs and clubs in the Stoke area.

At one point Khan was monitored in conversation about "how to construct a pipe bomb" from a recipe in an al-Qaeda magazine.

The men had also been funding a proposed madrassa - a college for Islamic instruction - abroad, which was to be used for firearms training and which would have been attended by Khan.

The court of appeal judgement said: "The groups were clearly considering a range of possibilities including fundraising for the establishment of a military training madrassa in Pakistan, where they would undertake training themselves and recruit others to do likewise, sending letter bombs through the post, attacking public houses used by British racist groups, attacking a high profile target with an explosive device and a Mumbai-style attack."

It added that they had "serious long term plans" to send Khan and other recruits for "training and terrorist experience".

"Should they return to the UK they would do so trained and experienced in terrorism," the judgement continued.

"They engaged with the others who were contemplating short term attacks in the UK but rightly considered themselves to be more serious jihadis than the others."

The question is not if he was brown or white, pakistani or british.

The question is why was he released?

A worrying pattern seems to be developing with British Elections.

16 June 2016 - Jo Cox Murder
23 June 2016 - EU Referendum

3 June 2017 - London Bridge attack
8 June 2017 - General Election

29 Nov 2019 - London Bridge attack
12 Dec 2019 - General Election

I guess these attackers also choose times to make an impact?

Can I ask (lazy can't be bothered to search) what was said by usman khan to make it a terror attack rather than just a standard stabbing in London?

He was convicted of terror offense a couple years ago. He was always a danger to society. I don't know how he got freed from prison. Should've stayed locked up.

So because he is a convicted terrorist therefore any crime.he commits will be terror related....hmmm sounds a bit fishy to me

And the man shot dead was “bearded”. Cant see the logic behind:

1. This being classed as a Terrorist incident. There are news of stabbings in London every other week.
2. Shooting and Killing the man instead of arresting or paralysing etc

The logic is that the Police thought he was a suicide bomber. The policy is shoot the head and extirpate consciousness before he detonates the bomb.

Whether it was terrorism or not, he killed two people for no good reason. It is good that he is dead.

Good riddance.

Don't Have an issue with what happend to him more so what the murders are being called.....very convenient to call them terror attacks and change the news cycle.

A worrying pattern seems to be developing with British Elections.

16 June 2016 - Jo Cox Murder
23 June 2016 - EU Referendum

3 June 2017 - London Bridge attack
8 June 2017 - General Election

29 Nov 2019 - London Bridge attack
12 Dec 2019 - General Election

I guess these attackers also choose times to make an impact?

It's the same reasons they try to attack planes.

All India media and most on twitter are jumping out of joy. Linking it with Pakistan and some are even saying he's from Pakistan etc. How obsessed are these Indians with Pakistan.
This idiot was a British born so don't involve Pakistan in everything.
Nearly all terrorist attacks in UK have been British born and he had links with Anjem Choudary. These wahabis have terrorist minds and even local British Pakistanis are against them. They come up on Pakistan independence day and curse Pakistan and police protect these terrorists themselves I'm afraid.

On the BBC there were details on him being involved/planning to be involved in funding some institutions in Pakistan that would train others.

Nobody should be jumping in joy for anything as there is nothing to be joyous about. As som posters have mentioned above, to the average thicko this will be yet another smear on the many good Muslims in the UK and worldwide.

Its not who benefits, its just information, you read way more into it than there is.

No one benefits.

That is def true, but they have a foothold in their back street mosques( and in some cases not so backstreet). But they have immense damage to the Muslims here in the UK and elsewhere.
