· Uncapped Ahsan Ali, Amad Butt and Haris Rauf named; Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik and Shaheen Afridi recalled for 24, 25 and 27 January matches in Lahore

· “We need to end our losing cycle and get back to winning habits, something that has played a critical role in our decision-making,” says Misbah-ul-Haq

· “I believe Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik still have plenty to offer to Pakistan cricket in the shortest format,” says Babar Azam

Lahore, 16 January 2020:

Pakistan have named uncapped Ahsan Ali, Amad Butt and Haris Rauf and recalled the experienced duo of Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik, along with pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, in a 15-player squad for the 24, 25 and 27 January Twenty20 Internationals against Bangladesh in Lahore.

They have replaced seven players who were part of the 16-player squad that lost 2-0 to Australia in November. Players missing out on selection are Asif Ali, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Irfan and Wahab Riaz.

Asif, Fakhar, Haris, Amir and Wahab were also members of the squad that lost 3-0 to Sri Lanka at home in October.

26-year-old Ahsan scored 131 runs in five matches at a strike-rate of just under 149 in the National T20 Cup in Faisalabad in October after scoring 178 runs at a strike-rate of over 130 for Quetta Gladiators in the HBL PSL 2019, while 24-year-old Amad scored 80 runs at a strike-rate of 170 and also took 10 wickets at an economy-rate of 7.62 in the Faisalabad event. 26-year-old Haris, who took six wickets in Faisalabad, is the second leading wicket-taker with 16 in Australia’s Big Bash League.

Pakistan chief selector and head coach Misbah-ul-Haq said: “We have lost eight of our last nine T20Is and as the number-one ranked side, this is unacceptable. We need to end our losing cycle and get back to winning habits leading into the upcoming Asia Cup and ICC T20 World Cup. This has played a critical role in our decision-making.

“We tried our alternate combinations in the series against Sri Lanka and Australia, and obviously, these didn’t work the way we had expected. Hafeez and Shoaib bring a total of 200 T20Is between them and if you mix these with the other youngsters we have in the side, then I think it becomes a good blend of experience and youth.

“The seven players who have missed out on selection are by no means out of our planning but considering their recent form in international cricket and taking into account other strong performances in our National T20 Cup, we have decided to make these changes.

“The high-pressure and quality HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 is starting in four weeks’ time and if they can reclaim their winning form, then they will be back in contention for the upcoming assignments, including the Asia Cup and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

“The matches against Bangladesh are part of our preparation, finding the right combination and building for the two major tournaments. The return of Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik and Shaheen Afridi gives us the experience and depth, while the exuberance of Ahsan Ali, Amad Butt and Haris Rauf gives the team more firepower, energy and all-round skill.

“Furthermore, the three have been rewarded for their performances in the National T20 Cup as we remain committed to give value to our domestic cricket by providing opportunities to high-performing players.”

Pakistan captain Babar Azam said: “I am happy with the selected squad and want to thank the selection committee for entertaining my request for Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik. I believe they still have plenty to offer to Pakistan cricket in the shortest format and their experience can be critical to our performances in the upcoming serie

“Ahsan, Amad and Haris have recently shown promise and talent, and I think it is the right time to throw them at the deep end to check their ability to perform at an international level. I am sure home crowd and conditions will complement their talent and they will be able to justify their selections.”

Hafeez, Qadir and Musa

But props to Misbah for going with Ahsan and Butt.

Ermm what kind of squad is this..where is Babz to start of with i assume its a 15 man squad..

Just realised Amir hasn’t been picked. Surprising decision, but hopefully we now never see that coward put on national colours again.

Malik is doing well on slow and small grounds, he will be exposed big time in Australia

Amad Butt and Haris Rauf good picks. Ahsan Ali is an interesting pick, heard good things but wasn't expecting Misbah to select him, perhaps he was recommended by Babar.

Hafeez and Malik are disgraceful selections, and Musa Khan isn't much better.

Hafeez had awful T20 league performances, I don't see him doing well but Malik is likely to perform

dont understand what the idiot is doing... keeps bring the TTF back and back and back...

1) Ahmad Shazad and Umar Akmal brought back in

2) M Irfan and Imran Khan brought back in

3) Haffez and Malick brought back in

4) What next .. Sohail Tanveer and Yasir Arafat ?

Good to see Amir and Fakhar dropped.

Malik has been in good form, can’t ignore him. Don’t see why Hafeez has been picked as can no longer bowl.

‘After consultations with Head Coach Misbah Ul-Haq, the Chief Selector Misbah Ul-Haq announced the decision to recall ex-captain Misbah Ul-Haq for the T20 series against Bangladesh.

“We had a committee formed to investigate the recent poor form of the T20 team”, the Chief Selector Misbah Ul-Haq told reporters on Thursday. “It was headed by esteemed ex-captain Misbah Ul-Haq. They discovered that the team required an experienced hand to guide up-coming youngsters such as Shoaib Malik and Mohammed Hafeez. Therefore, the selection committee has decided to recall the retired captain Misbah Ul-Haq to lead the team against Bangladesh.”

In other news, it is rumoured that the cricket committee, headed by Misbah Ul-Haq, has recommended esteemed cricketer Misbah Ul-Haq to be the next Chairman of the PCB.’

Ahsan ali had a awful physique for sportsman. Hopefully he had lost some weight

This is excellent punishment to amir ,wahab for giving up on test career .

Harsh on Wahab, at that age... He had every right to call it quits. Amir on the other hand, deserved this.

If rumours were true they both were asked to continue their test career atleast till aus series which they rejected. both are receiving consequences for their doing

I think Amir got punished for retirement from test.
Hafeez needs to go.
Both Musa and Qadir are not good enough.
Decent squad.

Pathetic decision to include hafeez and malik disappointed by babar azam he has openly backed both malik and hafeez

Zeeshan Ashraf is a better talent than Ahsan Alk
I personally don’t rate Ahsan very high either. The first and only time I watched him bat live he looked border line obese and was struggling to lay bat on ball against anything in excess of 135 kph. But I ain’t the best judge of batsman.

He did have a couple of decent scores in the PSL from memory and the pipe line is pretty bare atm in terms of opening batsman for this format. He deserves a go.

So it turns out that dropping senior players for the Australian tour was for their own protection. Well played Misbah.

We need Amir for the T20I world cup

Let's see Misbah's plans tho.

PS: Both Hafeez and Malik might win us this world cup! I know it sounds insane but in SC they still offer something!

is it me or does any body see any batters in the team at all apart from Babz...we are going to struggle big time i like Rauf and Butt...Ahsan is a complete hack..Fakhar needed to get dropped but there is no power there what so ever..

Just look at the windies team i know they lost to Ireland yest but they have powerful team and thats what you need in 20 20...

Where are the proper batsmen? Squad is full of pure bowlers or pseudo-all rounders?

Well Malik is the only one i would take even last two games in the BPL he has been awfull but he has had a good tournament there is no way Hafeez gets in and definately both...WC is in Australia where you need big hitters...i think we have lost the plot

Just hope PSL throws something for us otherwise we are doomed...

I think this is genuinely shameful, picking youngsters is fine but Ahsan has only got one 50 in his last 5 T20 innings which is something other domestic batsmen will be puzzled at. Hafeez has been playing badly after the World Cup, Musa and Hasnain aren't right for the team at the moment and Qadir hasn't grafted back at home since his first call-up so deserves nothing. Amad Butt has been okay but isn't anything amazing and Rizwan isn't good enough for the T20 team. Kamran would have solved both the opening and keeping issue and has been more consistent than Ahsan for his entire domestic career. Haris Rauf obviously deserved his spot and Khushdil Shah was fair in keeping his. Shoaib Malik thoroughly deserved a recall. Amir should have walked in to the team and Wahab has been fantastic in the recent BPL, where he has tormented the very players we're going to play, same as Amir! (DUH)

I would have picked:

1. Babar Azam (C)
2. Kamran Akmal (W)
3. Shoaib Malik
4. Iftikhar Ahmed
5. Umar Akmal (lower order where he should be)
6. Khushdil Shah
7. Imad Wasim
8. Shadab Khan
9. Wahab Riaz
10. Mohammad Amir
11. Haris Rauf

With Ahmed Shehzad (recent form and good record against BAN), Amad Butt, Mohammad Nawaz (BPL form) and Shaheen Afridi on the bench. That team would have hammered Bangladesh and got us back on track.

Wahab and Amir are obvioulsy missing but we have enough bowlers there ..so thats not the main concern. Issue is batting and power hitting which is ZILCH!!

i dont see anybody who can score...i agree above If you are doing horses for courses than Kamran Akmal as opener with Babz will be perfect a keeper and a opener who is a good puller and cutter..

eaxctly .... tried the most TTF in pak history (umar akmal and ahmad shahzad) in front of the weak SL team and karma is they were even bashed there

and to save face for the so called seniors Malik and Haffez, "dropped" in Aus and took khushdil shah ...

and now the failures are back ....

Pathetic squad. Exactly what you would expect from Misbah and this incompetent and clueless PCB regime.

Bangladesh are weak in T20s, but you would expect the likes of India, England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and West Indies to annihilate us.

Nothing but humiliation awaits us in the World T20 in October/November.

Our bowling is the least concern of ours, infact one of the best in the world.

Batting is minnow level apart from Babar Azam

Balance squad except Rizwan & Usman Qadir..

My Starting XI is....

Babar
Ahsan
Hafeez
Iftikhar
Malik
Rizwan
Imad
Amad
Shadab
Shaheen
Haris

Decent squad. Malik will be brilliant in subcontinent still but will be a big big failure in Aus. So his only use would be to win us this particular series however harmful that might prove in future.

Would have liked Rumman in for Musa as Musa is still very green. But Musa will hopefully get better with time.

Hoping Khushdil, Amad and Haris are given proper chances esp Khushdil Shah to bat in top 5.

Malik might still win us the series but would lose us matches if selected for Wt20.

Good to see Amir getting the boot.

Quite a poor squad tbh!

Malik and Hafeez will have no value to add in the upcoming WC so this clearly shows shortsightedness from Misbah and the management.

We're quite thin on fast bowling, aren't we? I'm no fan of Amir but he does deserve to be in the squad. This is not your gulli muhallay ki cricket where you "punish" people like that. His absence from 50 overs might not be a big deal but he's a very useful bowler in T20s.

Funny how Misbah and these senior players hoodwink the nation every time when a tough tour comes up. They dropped the senior pros for the AUs tour but they come waltzing back for a home series against a weak opposition. Pathetic!

Misbah is officially the worst man in Pakistan cricket

How can you bring back Mohammed Hafeez who has failed in the CPL, the T20 blast and has looked terrible every time he has played?

He has failed in previous T20 world cups too.

Ahsan Ali is hit and miss. Not the time for him.

Rizwan is an AWFUL white ball player.

Usman Qadir does he really deserve selection over Usama Mir?

This team selection is based upon Misbah's personal liking and disliking and grudge against some players and not on merit.
Otherwise how can you explain this

1-Dropping of Amir: since he does not play test anymore, he is concentrating more on WB cricket and is in great form.

2-Selection of Musa: Just because he is in Misbah;s team , Islamabad United: otherwise he is a decent club cricketer, nothing beyond that.

3-Selection of Hafeez; Recently banned, tenth time from bowling, 42 year old is most ridiculous selection.

4-Dropping of Wahab: just some personal grudge

5-Selection of Shoaib: will be useless in Australia : also like we don;t have anymore youngster to try against a relatively weaker team in our home condition.

Ahsan Ali is a max strike rate of 110 player. Not sure what the thinking behind this selection is.

It seems that PCB has a completely different view to talent and modern requirements as compared to all other teams

How many Pak batters can play according to modern requirements? Not many at all.

Wth really Babar? Has he actually asked for Hafeez and Malik?? Is he alright?

It's good that, hafeez Malik included in squad they both now have enough time to expose themselves and I am hoping by the time world cup comes they both will be eliminated from the squad

He deleted the first tweet.

Amirs got no ones sympathy. He was money hungry back then and hes money hungry now.

Difference is he isnt the same bowler.

On top of that he doesnt have the fitness regiment of a pro athlete. Heard he smokes as well.

Its pretty obvious why his career has declined year after year. PCB should move on.

Ahsan Ali's T20 SR is 130. His SR in PSL 2019 was 131. In the National T20 Cup 2019, it was 149.

Fakhar could only have been replaced by an attacking opener and there was no one else other than Ahsan Ali and I think he is fine for T20s.

Surprised on Amir’s exclusion but to be honest he wasnt really good in the last 5 T20 internationals.

Great to see Haris Rauf and Amad Butt debuting whilr Shaheen making a comeback. I hope Waqar has worked on Musa’s lengths otherwise the way he bowled previously if he continues that he will go for runs.

Hafeez, Qadir and Musa

But props to Misbah for going with Ahsan and Butt.

Ahsan ali should’ve been picked a while ago he was good in the PSL.

-Hafeez and Malik are has beens
-Hasnain is trash can’t bowl economically or get a wicket.
-Usman Qadir looks ok but Zahid Mehmood has a better domestic record than him and so deserved a go.
-Amad Butt is not a bad choice as an allrounder but I think his bowling will get smashed by Bangladesh.
-Musa Khan another terrible bowler like hasnain can get wickets but again is waaay too expensive.

What has Hafeez done lately to merit a place? The only person needing booted is Misbah. Get this clown out of Pakistan cricket before he completely and utterly annihilates it!

Ahsan Ali's T20 SR is 130. His SR in PSL 2019 was 131. In the National T20 Cup 2019, it was 149.

A sr of 129 @23 runs per game in domestics isn’t exactly going to set the world alight. Depends on what position they are planning to use him.

Posters have expressed issues with Umar Akmal, Asif Ali previously and now with Malik and Hafeez. I dont mind Malik and Hafeez as the short term fix till the T20 WC as we dont have many players who can accumulate and clear the field as well when required.

Maybe one can argue that Hussain Talat should have been considered instead of one of Malik or Hafeez but there isnt any other name I can think of. If there are some hidden gems in the middle order I guess there names should be mentioned so that everybody can know about them.

Yes a pathetic squad with only 1 batsman and 2 half decent bowlers.

Australia, New Zealand and West Indies will humiliate us in our group matches.

Thanks God we have no matches against England and India.

Using the Bangladesh series to see who can secure a place in the starting XI for their respective PSL sides :) :inzi #Priorities

Hopefully Rohail has fantastic u19 world cup then PSL

I would select him ahead of crap keepers we have for white ball cricket

If you are an Eng selector will you have Jason Roy in your T20 XI? He averages 23 but with a SR of 145 in T20 internationals and not to forget he had a pretty mediocre List A record too when he debuted for Eng based upon his attacking ability.

Ahsan Ali has clearly shown the ability to hit the ball and utilize the power play, so needs to be given oppurtunities to prove his ability at international level. Also what other options we have of openers who can attack during powerplay?

Rizwan Hussain and Zeeshan Ashraf will prove in this PSL

This squad announcement is not for world T20.

Great decision by Misbah. I think Malik and Hafeez's maturity and experience will help us immensely.

This is the last ride with Malik and Hafeez, might as well let them play. They were pretty hopeless without them in the last few games
