PSL Governing Council meeting held on Monday Lahore, 25 September 2023:

Mr. Zaka Ashraf, Chairman of the PCB Management Committee, on Monday chaired the meeting of the Pakistan Super League Governing Council at the National Cricket Academy, Lahore.

A wide range of issues were discussed during the meeting and below are the key outcomes:

• The upcoming ninth season will be played with six teams. No additional team will be added in the upcoming season. For the promotion and support of women's cricket, the PCB will continue to explore opportunities for women's league or exhibition matches during HBL PSL.

• The window for the upcoming season is decided between 8 February to 24 March 2024. A final schedule will be confirmed in the next meeting.

• It was decided that the PCB will continue to work closely with the franchises to explore alternative venues as a part of contingency planning.

• In the meeting, the late Alamgir Tareen, former owner of Multan Sultans, was remembered in a heartfelt and respectful way and his contribution towards Pakistan cricket was praised. “He was known for this dedication, passion, and remarkable contributions to cricket and will be missed,” Zaka Ashraf said in the meeting.

• A detailed discussion with respect to the organization of the HBL PSL 9 including the digital, media rights and other commercial assets tender process took place.

• Lastly, a report of the previous edition of HBL PSL was presented in the meeting and the franchisees' representatives were briefed on the success of the eighth edition. Franchises appreciated the effort of PCB, government agencies, and all stakeholders who helped in the delivery of the event at four venues.

Hope to see better stadiums, better arrangements for spectators and most importantly well balanced pitches. Painful see teams playing on Rawalpindi runway.

Last year, PCB wanted all players to be with the franchises in Pakistan a WEEK before the PSL

which makes it 1st February 2024

Our test series in Australia ends on 7 January, and we play a 5 match t20 series against New Zealand in New Zealand after that

So when exactly do Babar and Shaheen plan on playing in the Bangladesh league and Emirates league?
Wasn't this thought out before Shaheen signed a 3 year contract with a franchise in the Emirates league

Lets see if the PCB can achieve a good broadcast deal this time. Will be tough given the poor economic conditions in Pakistan.

Also Shaheen of Lahore Qalanders

And Rizwan of Multan Sultans
Shaheen can’t be dropped from captaincy, he’s won it twice in a row

I specifically suggested Babar and Shadab not because of personal dislike, it’s just time the PCB need to be clear that they are heading in a new direction and these two should not be influential going forward

There is debate between being a genuinely good captain vs. being a bad/mediocre captain of a good team.

I am gonna give props to Shaheen for out-batting Rizwan in the 2023 Final. And Hafeez for doing the same in the 2022 Final.

But Shaheen is not captaincy material. The IU and PZ are easy to beat in the playoffs because of Shadab/Babar.

Shaheen will understand how good a leader he is once there is no Rashid Khan, Sam Billings, David Wiese

Just like Rizwan once he can’t hide behind the powerhouse overseas Multan middle order

But how can you convince the naive public? They need to see it first before they believe it

I must say that Shaheen is a fresh face. He shows aggression and confidence. His blazing quick 44* & 4fer was the reason they won the 2023 Final.

But having best friends like Babar (timid mediocrity) and Shahid (drama & politics) are terrible influences on him. Unfortunately, he surrounds himself with bad influences.

Guys - this thread for the issues in post #1

Shaheen is not ready for the captaincy. When things don't go his way, he becomes way too emotional and panicky and that rubs off on the rest of the team, i would like him to experience some setbacks, defeats and he needs to learn how to handle the bad times as well professionally.

Aren't thise 45 days too long for 6 team league. Should end in a month imo

The PCB should aim for double headers on the weekends.

The PCB is trying to expand the number of venues and that requires travel. Players and officials have complained that they need some rest time as well

I don't think Peshawar stadium is ready yet. We already had Karachi, Multan, Lahore and Pindi. Not sure which venues are they trying to add

They have 4 months left to get the Peshawar Stadium ready. Javed Afridi is putting pressure on the PCB to host games in Arbab Niaz Stadium for PSL 9 and fair play to him too, the PZ team is probably the most passionately followed team in the PSL and will have a solid home support base.

Ramiz made a statement last year that Peshawar was unsafe to hold international cricket and that upset Javed Afridi so much that he lobbied successfully with the PML N government to have Ramiz removed.

LQ is followed as passionately too. Although I am ISLU guy. Lol.

Would love it if PZ can play their games in Hayatabad.

I make that 44 days.

Way too long.

These tournaments should be a maximum 1 month.

Will in pakistan during PSL 9
Looking to go to the open ceremony
How much are the tickets and where can I get them from?

What does the vip ticket include

I was in Pakistan for most of PSL8. Watching the matches with my family in Lahore was an amazing experience. I can’t wait for PSL 9 to start.

The registration window for foreign players has opened for the upcoming season of HBL Pakistan Super League, which is tentatively scheduled from 8 February to 24 March. This will be the ninth edition of the flagship event.

The category renewals of the local players will be finalised and published shortly as well. Following the category renewals, the trade and retention window will be opened. Once the trade and retention window is open, the pick order for the player draft for the upcoming season will also be shared.

The retentions and trades are to be finalised ahead of the HBL PSL 9 Player Draft, which has been tentatively scheduled for mid-December, after the completion of the National T20. The final of the National T20 is set to be played on 10 December in Karachi.

The previous HBL PSL season was won by Lahore Qalandars, who defeated Multan Sultans in the final at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore to become the first side to clinch two successive HBL PSL titles. Islamabad United ended the season on the third place, while Peshawar Zalmi was fourth on the standings. Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Fantastic news can’t wait. I just want this joke tournament of the World Cup to end so that we can get down to real and meaningful cricket of the PSL.

I want to see SHAHEEN AND HARIS to once again pace the pitch like the tigers they are to show the whole nation and whoever else cares to watch that the aberration of the World Cup where their mediocrity was showcased to the world was just a passing phase. The real test of their skills is the 24 balls they bowl to average batsmen

I’ll be amazed if the performance at the World Cup doesn’t have an effect on the crowd attendance.

PSL Draft Category Renewals 2024

Nine players had their categories upgraded following the local player category renewal process for the upcoming edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League. The Pakistan Cricket Board earlier opened registration window for foreign players as well. The flagship event is tentatively scheduled for 8 February to 24 March 2024.

Naseem Shah and Iftikhar Ahmed, both Quetta Gladiators players, have been upgraded from diamond to platinum. Sarfraz Ahmed has been moved to diamond from gold. Peshawar Zalmi’s wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Haris has been shifted to diamond from gold as well. Pace bowler Salman Irshad has moved to gold from silver. Multan Sultans fast bowlers Abbas Afridi and Ihsanullah have both been promoted to the gold category, after playing as emerging picks last year.

Islamabad United wicketkeeper-batter Azam Khan and pace all-rounder Faheem Ashraf have also been upgraded from gold to diamond category. Zeeshan Zamir has moved from emerging to silver, while Mubasir Khan has moved from emerging to gold. Karachi Kings’ Tayyab Tahir has moved from silver to gold, while Qasim Akram has been upgraded to gold from emerging. Lahore Qalandars’ Kamran Ghulam and Zaman Khan have been enhanced to gold from silver and emerging respectively.

Some players have been demoted. The changes include Mohammad Nawaz (Quetta, Platinum to Diamond), Mohammad Hasnain (Quetta, Diamond to Gold), Haider Ali (Karachi, Platinum to Gold) and Asif Ali (Islamabad, Platinum to Diamond). Players who have represented Pakistan internationally cannot be relegated below the gold category.

As part of the category renewal process, franchise representatives were required to vote for every player. Teams were not allowed to vote for their own players but submit review requests at the end of this voting stage.

The list was then reviewed by Director – International Cricket Usman Wahla, member of the national selection committee Tauseef Ahmad and Manager Partnerships Shoaib Khalid, who has been leading player acquisition for HBL PSL since 2021. Factors including national team performances, domestic performances and perceived T20 brand value were considered while finalising local players’ categories.

The franchises will now put forward relegation requests for the players before finalizing retentions. After relegation requests are floated, all teams are given an opportunity to meet the player’s base category. If the player’s base category is not matched, the player may be relegated to a category below his base category.

U23 players cannot be part of a squad as an Emerging player for more than two years unless they have played nine or fewer matches in those two years.

Local category player renewals (team-wise):

Islamabad United – Shadab Khan (Platinum), Asif Ali, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Hasan Ali, Azam Khan, Faheem Ashraf (all Diamond), Sohaib Maqsood, Abrar Ahmed, Rumman Raees, Zafar Gohar, Mubasir Khan (all Gold), Zeeshan Zamir (Silver), Hassan Nawaz (Emerging)

Karachi Kings – Imad Wasim (Platinum), Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Amir (both Diamond), Haider Ali, Aamir Yamin, Sharjeel Khan, Mir Hamza, Tayyab Tahir, Musa Khan, Qasim Akram (all Gold), Mohammad Ikhlaq, Mohammad Umar, Akif Javed (all Silver), Irfan Khan Niazi, Faisal Akram (both Emerging)

Why is Wahab Riaz still playing PSL?

why not make space for younger players?

Need Islamabad to make a trade for Ifti. Send Asif Ali to Quetta for him.

Remove Shadab as captain because he has been rubbish as captain and also drop Hassan Ali.

We are still seeing the same talent pool in the PSL, not enough new players are coming from our domestic cricket and system. In comparison the IPL always see new domestic and foreign talent every year.

Why is Wahab Riaz still playing PSL?

why not make space for younger players?

Same point can be made for Hafeez.

Also when will Quetta Gladiators still persisting with Sarfaraz. The man has lost 4 consecutive PSL's where Quetta finished last on the points table but still Nadeem Omar is running the team on the basis of personal relationships. Even Moin Khan as coach needs to be shown the door.

These unprofessional decisions end up ruining the quality of the league.

Why is Wahab Riaz still playing PSL?

why not make space for younger players?
Why should he?

He is getting paid. The franchises should select someone else and dump him because he is useless now.

But they dont for some reason.

PSL will be jampacked in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Multan and Peshawar, Quetta if they manage to hold games there.

Can you give us an update on Rafi stadium? I remember some years back you would be here to give us regular updates.

PCB shouldn't risk Peshawar as champions trophy is on the line.

Screw the crowds.

Need tight security and no threats what so ever. The situation on the western border and with Afghan refugees means Peshawar is off the cards until 2026 imo.

Remove Shadab as captain because he has been rubbish as captain and also drop Hassan Ali.

So you would rather have a 45 year old than a proven T20 hitting specialist who is 10 years younger than him?

dont worry, peshawar wont be getting games. They just do this dramaybazi at the start of every psl.

Having anything done in Peshawar requires army permission, and they will never be foolish enough to give go ahead on this

Peshawar will be able to host once the refugee situation has been sorted out.

Iftikhar Pakistan’s so called big hitter

20 sixes in ODI’s since 2019 World Cup

Good find.

I guess having a batting technique that resembles Misbah is enough for some.

No wonder the calm down message had to be sent down earlier than this week.

Ramiz was too honest and blunt for his own liking

Didn't know how to be politically correct. But whatever he said was fact. No foreign player except Darren Sammy as Zalmi coach would travel to Peshawar

Too big a risk

Plus I saw a video, isn't the outfield a bit too small? It hardly looked 50m

Why is Sarfraz only in the diamond category when Rizwan is in platinum?

He shouldn't even be getting selected at all nor should over the hill players like Haris Sohail.

Hopefully PSL can get to a point where batting is strong enough that foreign picks aren't automatically all the batsmen available become the pool of batsmen domestically are so mediocre.

Anyone who has been to pesyawar knows that no matches will be held in that stadium. A portion of the stadium touches a mohalla.

The whole stadium is a security risk

Quetta needs to retain Sarfraz, Hasnain, Saud and Omair

Karachi need to retain Imad, Amir, Sharjeel and Mir Hamza

If both teams do that than both will have one foot in the final

I wonder if Quetta will ask for Azam back. The biggest mistake united made was giving away Ifti. With him in plantinum, and Islamabad having 4-5 players in diamond, this means alot of players will be leaving Islamabad this season.

This sucks though. If the team can afford them, why lose out on category. This way, you cant really build a franchise.

PSL Governing Council meeting held on Tuesday

A meeting of the HBL Pakistan Super League governing council was held today at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. The meeting was chaired by Mr Zaka Ashraf, Chairman of the PCB Management Committee.

All six HBL PSL franchisees were represented along with PCB officials who engaged in a fruitful and detailed discussion on a wide range of issues including the HBL PSL9 edition’s operational and logistical matters and the draft of HBL PSL9 which is tentatively scheduled to take place in mid-December immediately after the conclusion of National T20 Cup.

With the general election announced to take place in February 2024, it was unanimously agreed that formal advice be expeditiously sought from the government of Pakistan concerning finalising the exact dates for the HBL PSL9.

Franchisees also urged the PCB to accelerate the process for the sale of PSL Media rights.

So if the Gov says you cannot have PSL due to elections, will PSL move to UAE?

Hopefully PCB won't make mess of PSL, taking it outside will lose if charm but yest inclusion of overseas cricketers may increase , would like to see Rachin Klassen Jansen being part of PSL

With the general elections also scheduled to take place of February 8, it won't be a surprise if we see PSL 9 start go ahead a few days. PCB should make sure that all matches take place in Pakistan so more fans can enjoy the actions in the country and it will also be more cost-effective.

Pick order for HBL PSL 2024 Player Draft finalised

Preparations are ramping up for HBL PSL 9, having now finalised the Pick Order for the Player Draft. Quetta Gladiators will make the first pick in the HBL Pakistan Super League 2024 Player Draft. Karachi Kings and two-time champions Islamabad United will have the second and third picks. The fourth and fifth picks will be done by Peshawar Zalmi and last season’s runners-up Multan Sultans respectively while winners of the past two editions Lahore Qalandars will finish the first round with the sixth pick.

The selection order for the first round for the Platinum category is determined by the inverse order of the previous season's standings. In order to make the Pick Order more equitable, a different franchise shall occupy the first pick in the first round of each category. Quetta Gladiators will begin the Platinum picks, Karachi Kings will have the first Diamond pick, Peshawar Zalmi will have the opening Gold pick, Multan Sultans will have the first pick in the Silver category, Islamabad United will pick the first player in Emerging category and Lahore Qalandars will have the first Supplementary pick.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has previously opened the registration window for foreign players. The flagship event is tentatively scheduled from 8 February to 24 March, 2024.

Franchisees will now submit relegation requests for players before finalising retentions. Following the floating of relegation requests, all teams have the chance to match the player's base category. If the player's base category is not matched, they may be relegated to a category below their base category.

The HBL PSL 9 Draft is tentatively scheduled to take place in mid-December, immediately following the conclusion of the National T20.

delay it with one week.
I know it can be hell after the elections in PK, keep Dubai as backup plan otherwise.

Yes, delaying it for a few days would be a good thing but shifting it to UAE won't be good.

What Javed Afridi wants, Javed Afridi gets. Ramiz Raja learned the hard way

HBL PSL Player Draft 2024 to take place on 13 December

The HBL Pakistan Super League Player Draft 2024 will take place at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore on Wednesday, 13 December 2023. The flagship event is tentatively scheduled from 8 February to 24 March 2024.

The pick order for the Player Draft was finalised earlier this month with Quetta Gladiators set to make the first pick of the draft. The selection order for the first round for the Platinum category was determined by the inverse order of the previous season’s standings.

The process of local player category renewals for the upcoming ninth edition of the tournament was completed on 10 November with categories upgraded for nine players. The registration window for foreign players was opened on 25 October with several top players across the globe showing interest.

The trade and retention window is currently open. Earlier today, Karachi Kings traded Imad Wasim to Islamabad United for Hasan Ali and received Islamabad United’s first round silver pick in exchange for their second silver pick.

The exact time of the HBL PSL Player Draft 2024 will be unveiled later. Below is the important information regarding media accreditation:

Media accreditation – Due to limited space inside the venue, only PCB-accredited Reporters will be granted access, which will be through an event accreditation device following the display of their PCB accreditation pass. The event accreditation passes will be available for collection from outside the venue before the event commences.

Why doesn't the PCB hold the PSL draft after the IPL auction? Why before?

A lot of unsold foreign players in the IPL will want to make themselves available for the PSL

Ramiz Raja fired after he stated Peshawar was a no go area for foreign teams.
Are you sure he was fired for saying this or he was fired for generally poor performances of the men’s side?

So you are basically arguing that Ramiz wasn’t removed because the national team’s performances were poor?

That was a factor too but in this country nothing happens without back door lobbying and Ramiz making an enemy out of Javed Afridi did not help his cause.

So what now? The PCB should be held to ransom by Javed Afridi and organise parts of the tournament in a high security risk place like Peshawar…whilst potentially jeopardising their home international calendar and CT hosting in 2025?

Ramiz Raja fired after he stated Peshawar was a no go area for foreign teams.
Not true.Ramiz was fired because he was appointed by Imran.PDM parties wanted their own personnel to run PCB.Why did they change the 6 team structure?.They could improved it by increasing the number of teams to 8.It is not only cricket. The incoming governments change diplomats, bureaucrats, police officers and even judges.

I will be only looking forward to Mujeeb, Rassie, Theekshana, Ngidi, Chameera and Hope.

The competition from SPL T20, BPL T20, BBL, SAT20, ILT20, IPL is now killing the PSL. PSL will badly deteriorate now especially if things continue the way they are and if the Franchises, PCB don't make changes.

Exactly. It will fade out in the background.
