Sindh set to take first innings lead against Northern

Rawalpindi, 30 September 2019:

Sindh looked good to take the first innings lead in their first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match against Northern at the KRL Stadium on Monday.

After dismissing Northern for 271 in 102.3 overs in the first innings, Sindh were only 14 runs behind after reaching 257 for four in 82 overs at close of play on the penultimate day of the match.

With a lot of time lost on the opening two days due to rain, an outright result seems highly unlikely.

However, both teams will be gunning for batting and bowling points when play resumes on Tuesday.

Asad Shafiq was at the crease on 77 not out and giving his captain company at the other end was Saud Shakeel on 10 not out.

A 69-Test veteran, Asad has so far hit 10 boundaries and faced 143 balls in 184 minutes. He shared a third wicket stand of 109 runs with the left-handed Saad Ali, who hit nine fours in his 101-ball 63.

Khurram Manzoor continued his fine form. The right-handed opener was out just after completing his 49th first-class half century. His 54 was laced with five fours.

For Northern, Sohail Tanvir, Haris Rauf, Hammad Azam and Nauman Ali shared the four wickets.

Earlier, Sindh took just five balls to wrap up Northern’s first innings.

Right-arm pace bowler Tabish Khan had Nauman Ali (21) leg-before-wicket as Umar Amin’s side was bundled out on their overnight total.

Tabish finished with figures of three for 70. Left-arm spinner Kashif Bhatti also took three wickets for 51 runs while Sohail Khan claimed two scalps for 60 runs.

Rohail Nazir (67) and Hammad Azam (58) were the main run-getters for Northern.

In the first innings, Northern bagged 2 batting points while Sindh earned 3 bowling points.

Scores in brief:

Northern 271 all-out, 102.3 overs (Rohail Nazir 67, Hammad Azam 58, Umer Waheed 35, Haider Ali 26; Kashif Bhatti 3-51, Tabish Khan 3-70, Sohail Khan 2-60).

Sindh 257-4, 82 overs (Asad Shafiq 77 not out, Saad Ali 63, Khurram Manzoor 54, Omair bin Yousuf 36)

Balochistan in trouble after being forced to follow-on

Lahore, 30 September 2019:

Problems for Balochistan compounded on day three of their four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture against Central Punjab at Quetta’s Bugti Stadium as the hosts were 141 for five after being forced to follow-on.

Balochistan, resuming their innings at the overnight score of 119 for five, were skittled out for 270 in the first innings.

The sixth-wicket stand between Hussain Talat and Bismillah Khan put 45 runs more on the board on Monday.

Hussain scored 37 runs from 148 balls, hitting five fours.

With a 143-ball 71, Bismillah was the highest run-scorer in the innings for Balochistan. He hit nine fours and a six, while spending 223 minutes at the crease.

Nasim Shah and Waqas Maqsood added a wicket each to his tallies, returning 3-43 and 2-50. Bilal Asif and Zafar Gohar also joined the wicket-takers’ list, picking up a wicket each.

By removing Balochistan’s all 10 wickets inside 110 overs, Central Punjab secured three bowling points.

With Balochistan 251 runs behind, Central Punjab’s captain Azhar Ali enforced follow-on for the second time on trot in the tournament.

The hosts, in their second innings, were off to a decent start, putting up a 56-run partnership for the first-wicket.

Zafar, who scored his maiden first-class century on Sunday, picked up three wickets in quick succession and reduced Balochistan to 78 for four. Nine runs later, the hosts lost another wicket.

Abu Bakar (33) and Bismillah (37) pushed the visitors back with an unbeaten 54-run stand for the sixth-wicket.

With Balochistan still trailing by 110 runs, the two will have to toil hard to deny Central Punjab their second consecutive win by an innings’ margin when play resumes on Tuesday.

Scores in brief:

Central Punjab 521-6d, 122.2 overs (Salman Butt 237, Azhar Ali 123, Zafar Gohar 100, Kamran Akmal 24; Yasir Shah 3-163)

Balochistan 270-10, 85.2 over (Bismillah Khan 71, Ammad Butt 39, Hussain Talat 37, Yasir Shah 36, Imran Butt 33; Nasim Shah 3-43, Waqas Maqsood 2-50) and after follow-on 141-5, 45 overs (Azeem Ghumman 43, Abu Bakar 33 not out, Bismillah Khan 37 not out; Zafar Gohar 3-66)

Ashfaq scores a half-century in a rain-hit day

Lahore, 30 September 2019:

The rain continued to pour in Abbottabad as only 38 overs were possible on day three of the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Southern Punjab.

The play started in the afternoon and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were 295 for four at stumps, adding 119 runs, at the loss of three wickets, to their total on Monday.

He was supported by Zohaib Khan from the other end. The all-rounder was not out for 20 when the stumps were drawn.

The pair, to date, has added 51 runs in their fifth-wicket stand.

For Southern Punjab, Mohammad Abbas was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 53 in 21 overs.

Scores in brief:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 295-4, 86 overs (Israrullah 89, Sahibzada Farhan 78, Asfaq Ahmed 61 not out, Zohaib Khan 20 not out; Mohammad Abbas 2-53)

Match called off at Abbottabad.

Only 86 overs of the first innings of the match were possible. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa scored 295 for the loss of four wickets

Lahore, 1 October 2019:

Central Punjab secured their second consecutive win by an innings’ margin as the Azhar Ali-led side beat Balochistan by an innings and 12 runs in the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture at Quetta’s Bugti Stadium.

Off-spinner Bilal Asif picked up four wickets for 33 runs on the last day of the match as the hosts were skittled out 239 in the morning session after resuming their innings at 141 for five.

For Balochistan, Bismillah Khan once again put up a fight, scoring 70 from 106 balls. Following up his first innings’ 143-ball 71, the wicketkeeper-batsman hit seven fours and three sixes in his 140-minute stay at the crease before Bilal’s catch off his own bowling sent him back to the pavilion. He had resumed the day on 37.

Abu Bakar, the other not out batsman yesterday, added only 11 more runs to his overnight score to register 44 off 120 balls.

Young pacer Nasim Shah was the other bowled for Central Punjab to pick up a wicket on Tuesday morning as the right-armer picked up the wicket of Ammad Butt.

With their second win of the tournament, Central Punjab consolidated their position at the top of the points table, picking up 24 points – 16 for an outright win, and five and three for scoring more than 400 runs and for bowling the opposition out in 110 overs in the first and second innings of the match.

Balochistan bagged three points from the match, one for taking five Central Punjab wickets by the time 110 overs were completed and two for crossing the 250-run mark in their first innings.

That Central Punjab posted a daunting 521 for six declared after being put into bat by the hosts was due to a profound 237 off 376 balls by Salman Butt. His 549-minute at the stay was studded with 35 fours.

He put up an imposing first-wicket stand of 237 runs with Azhar – who scored 165-ball 123, his second century on trot.

Central Punjab now travel to Abbottabad to play Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the round four of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy tournament, which commences from 5 October. Balochistan face Northern in Rawalpindi at the KRL Stadium, which will be live-streamed.

Scores in brief:

Central Punjab 521-6d, 122.2 overs (Salman Butt 237, Azhar Ali 123, Zafar Gohar 100 not out, Kamran Akmal 24; Yasir Shah 3-163)

Balochistan 270 all-out, 85.2 overs (Bismillah Khan 71, Ammad Butt 39, Hussain Talat 37, Yasir Shah 36, Imran Butt 33; Nasim Shah 3-43, Waqas Maqsood 2-50) and after follow-on 239 all-out, 69.5 overs (Bismillah Khan 70, Abu Bakar 44, Azeem Ghumman 43, Ammad Butt 26; Bilal Asif 4-33, Zafar Gohar 3-93, Nasim Shah 2-49)

Lahore, 1 October 2019:

No ball was bowled at Abbottabad Cricket Stadium and Rawalpindi’s KRL Stadium on day four of round three first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixtures due to heavy overnight rains and wet outfield.

The final day of the Southern Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa contest at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium was called-off at 1.40pm.

Only 86 overs were possible in which Khyber Pakhtunkhwa scored 295 for four.

Openers Sahibzada Farhan and Israrullah, hitting 12 fours each, put up a solid 167-run stand, despite rain interrupting the play.

Farhan scored 78 from 138 balls and Israrullah top scored with a 180-ball 89.

Ashfaq Ahmed, who came to bat at number three, was unbeaten on 61 off 113 balls, which was laced with five fours and two sixes. With him at the crease was Zohaib Khan at 20.

At the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi, the play was called-off at 3.15pm.

Sindh were 257 for four with captain Asad Shafiq, who hit 10 fours in his 143-ball 77, and Saud Shakeel batting at 10.

Saad Ali and Khurram Manzoor were the other notable contributors with 63 and 54.

Earlier in the match, Northern scored 271 all-out on the back of fifties by Rohail Nazir and Hammad Azam.

Rohail, the Pakistan U19 captain, hit 67 runs from 120 balls, hitting 12 fours, and Hammad’s 58, which had five fours and two sixes, came from 117 balls.

Scores in brief:

Southern Punjab v Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Abbottabad Cricket Stadium

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 295-4, 86 overs (Israrullah 89, Sahibzada Farhan 78, Asfaq Ahmed 61 not out, Zohaib Khan 20 not out; Mohammad Abbas 2-53) v Southern Punjab

Northern v Sindh, KRL Stadium, Rawalpindi

Northern 271 all-out, 102.3 overs (Rohail Nazir 67, Hammad Azam 58, Umer Waheed 35, Haider Ali 26; Kashif Bhatti 3-51, Tabish Khan 3-70, Sohail Khan 2-60).

Sindh 257-4, 82 overs (Asad Shafiq 77 not out, Saad Ali 63, Khurram Manzoor 54, Omair bin Yousuf 36)

This central Punjab squad seems to have all bases covered.

Powerful batting line-up, spinners, pacers.

Will take some beating.
