[PICTURES] The state of cricket stadiums in Pakistan

There's a lot of potential to make this a world class, picturesque ground with Serena hotel close to it.

Till 3 days ago all the mountains around Quetta were covered in snow, but than ut rained n washed away most of the snow. The winters in Quetta are very harsh n temperature can go as low as -10/-12.
So to expect green grass in winters under such weather conditions us beyond stupid.

So why play on a surface which can hurt players.

PCB needs to invest in Quetta stadium and install turf. Even if no international matches are being played, the local population should have this facility upgraded.

India has awesome stadiums.

Pakistan doesn't know which way its bread is buttered and that's a problem. Provided it actually is butter in the first place

Why has Sarghoda not become an international stadium considering it's in one of Pakistan's few developed cities?

I don't get the idea behind constructing new stadiums when the current ones are in such shoddy shape. Its kinda embarrassing that there isn't even a single multi-tier stadium in Pakistan. None of them inspire awe in you when you walk into them or when you watch them on TV. The one in my city 'Pindi Stadium' doesn't even have seats in all the enclosures. They just put out wedding chairs in those enclosures whenever there's a match.

I don't even want to know what the stadium in Faisalabad probably looks like right now.

As the glitz and glamour of the HBL Pakistan Super League returns for an eighth edition from next week with hi-octane action across four venues, Niaz Stadium’s agonising wait for revival of national and international cricket continues.

Once an important centre for hosting international and domestic cricket as the only stadium in Sindh after Karachi’s National Stadium, Niaz Stadium now lies in ruins. Quetta’s Bugti Stadium hosted a PSL exhibition match on Sunday between Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi and while there has been talk of taking the PSL to Peshawar, the Niaz Stadium doesn’t even enter the conversation.

It’s fallen off the radar despite Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah claiming in 2018 that the Niaz Stadium would host PSL matches in the following year.

For now, citizens of Hyderabad have been left reminiscing about the glorious times when the venue hosted top international matches and Pakistan’s star players were seen in action.

It was here in 1983 that Javed Miandad scored an unbeaten 280 against India. “As ninth grade student, I wanted to see the action,” Akram Shahid, now a senior photographer, told Dawn. “I managed to get some scoreboard work with local contractual scorers. While busy in scoring behind [old] scoreboard, we were anxiously waiting for Miandad’s 300 but skipper Imran Khan declared the innings.”

A year before that, Jalaluddin had taken the first hat-trick in One-day International cricket in a match against Australia at the Niaz Stadium.

In 1987, it was the venue for the opening match of the World Cup between Pakistan and Sri Lanka and a decade on, it hosted a ODI between Pakistan and India.

That game, won convincingly by Pakistan, is also remembered for events leading to it with then-Pakistan Cricket Board chief Majid Khan expressing dismay over a grassless patch in the outfield at the Eid Gah end. “I’ll hang you upside down if it gets seen on television,” Majid would tell venue official Hafeez Mughal, whose team would treat that in time for the game.

By the turn of the millennium, though, the stadium’s condition went from bad to worse before then-district nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil handed over stadium to PCB under a memorandum of understanding for administrative purpose and infrastructural development including new outfield, structures’ reconstruction.

After taking over in July 2007, the PCB organised a one-dayer between Pakistan and Zimbabwe in January 2008 but the Niaz Stadium was largely maintained for first-class matches and it gave an opportunity to cricket fans to see former skipper Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Asif, Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir, Kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal in action for their respective departments.

With the PCB not honouring the terms, the Municipal Committee Qasimabad — the ground’s custodians — revoked the MoU and took control of it again in April 2018 and that step saw cricket leave the Niaz Stadium.

“It [the committee] doesn’t have professional expertise to maintain the ground,” former Hyderabad Region’s cricket association president Mir Suleman Talpur told Dawn. “Only the PCB can do it and it must do it now.”

Existing conditions of venue merit massive development and Sindh Chief Secretary Dr Mohammad Sohail Rajput had spoken to former PCB chief Ramiz Raja about revival of cricket in the city. But then came change of command in the board.

For now, Niaz Stadium has been relegated to hosting local tournaments and even tape-ball matches. It faces an unending decay with the outfield in a bad shape, general enclosures crumbling and the conditions of the dressing rooms and the pavilion deplorable.

“When the National Stadium, Peshawar’s Arbab Niaz Stadium, Multan or Bugti Stadiums can be reconstructed and renovated why can’t they do the same with the Niaz Stadium,” wonders Mir Suleman.

He, however, believes things might change if the PCB or the Sindh government takes the initiative. But till then, the Niaz Stadium — where Pakistan has never lost a Test or ODI — will have to wait.

Najam Sethi:

“Moving on, we will work on uplifting our stadia in Lahore, Karachi, Multan, Rawalpindi, Quetta and Peshawar as I feel we need to enhance the facilities to make them at par with the world. We are also in talks with the relevant authorities in Karachi and government in Lahore to make five-star hotels with the stadiums so the people don’t have to face disturbances when the matches are held.”

Speaking at a press conference before the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season eight final, Najam Sethi said that the PCB is discussing with relevant authorities to build luxury hotels near stadiums to minimize transportation issues for fans during matches.

"Despite all the logistical challenges, we conducted a high-class opening ceremony in Multan. Never before has an opening ceremony being delivered of such great quality. When I took over the affairs, no preparation had been made for the opening ceremony. I personally looked into the affairs and made sure that we continued to build the brand of the PSL through sheer hard work and dedication"

"It took us two months from planning till execution to deliver the PSL, and I have no qualms in claiming that we can deliver the PSL in any part of the world because of our knowledge and expertise"

PCB offered 25 acres near Isamabad’s D-12 for cricket stadium

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has offered 25 acres to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the construction of a cricket stadium in Islamabad.

Recently, the CDA approached the PCB with the offer of 25 acres near D-12.

“I have spoken to PCB high-ups a few days ago and informed them that CDA has earmarked 25 acres for the project. Next week, CDA and PCB are going to hold a meeting on it,” CDA Chairman Noorul Amin Mengal told Dawn on Sunday. He said the CDA had 150 acres near D-12 and Shah Allah Ditta which will be utilised for promotion of sports.

“Out of the total, 25 acres will be given to the PCB for the cricket stadium and we will develop other sports facilities on the remaining land,” he said and added that the cricket stadium in the foothills of Margallas will add to the beauty of Islamabad. The facility will also be used for international cricket matches.

Asked about possible backlash from environment activists as the area falls in Zone III, the CDA chairman said he had been told that the area was outside of Zone III, adding even if it falls in the said zone, the civic agency could use it for sports facilities like the ones already constructed near Aabpara such as the sports complex. That area also falls in Zone III.

“There is no bar on having sports and recreational facilities in Zone III and even we have hiking tracks in Margalla Hills. But I will check the issue again,” he said.

Should never happen on green land.

At best, they should create green area outside Islamabad over 10 years including a stadium.

No building in Pakistan should ever come up without mandatory net positive green cover.

You have a stadium in Pindi already that uses shaadi chairs for spectators in some of the stands.

Instead of wasting money trying to build another rubbish half complete stadium, why not look to renovate Pindi stadium? Are the people in Pakistan really this dumb?

I was watching a video on Youtube showing the current state of Sheikhupura cricket stadium which is in bad state but it has stadium seating chairs installed. Why is no one thinking to take those out and install them in Pindi and/or Karachi?

The Capital Development Authority(CDA)’s proposed cricket stadium project is likely to hit snags as the federal government has directed the civic agency not to engage Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the project.

Recently, the CDA and PCB prepared a draft memorandum of understanding (MoU) for jointly executing the project in the foothills of Margallas near D-12. Under the proposed agreement, construction of the stadium and its operation and maintenance would be the responsibility of the PCB while the CDA would provide 280 kanals for it.

It was also proposed that the PCB will get 70pc of the revenue and the remaining would go to the CDA. However, sources said last week at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the CDA was directed not to execute the MoU and construct the stadium from its own funding.

The civic agency was also directed to hire the services of local or international consultant firms for the project. The sources said after the development, the proposed project was likely to face a setback. They said CDA had no expertise for the construction of a stadium. Secondly, the civic agency could face funding issues as well as billions of rupees were required for the project.

Govt asks CDA not to go for joint venture with PCB and establish stadium with own funds, says official

Similarly, an official said the construction and operation of an international cricket stadium was not a suitable job for the CDA as it was supposed to provide infrastructure like roads and streets and other basic civic facilities to citizens.

“I have no idea how we will manage such a big project,’” said an official. He said the CDA in the past even had failed to maintain its own small cricket grounds developed in various sectors which remained in illegal occupation of various individuals for years. However, a couple of years ago, after a court battle the CDA got the grounds vacated from individuals but still some private people have their influence on some of the grounds, said the official said.

During the last three months, PCB and CDA held several meetings on the project and the former was willing to construct the stadium. The CDA official said there was a need to plead the case with the interim government, requesting it to allow the CDA to get help of the PCB otherwise it will not be able to arrange billions of rupees for the project.

Despite repeated attempts, CDA Chairman Noorul Amin Mengal could not be reached for comments on Sunday.

However, an officer of the CDA said that the civic agency had the potential to execute the project without the support of PCB. He, however, said the CDA will hire a consultant and in the light of his recommendation will move forward.

Recently, PCB and CDA officials at a meeting had decided that the proposed stadium will be the largest in the country with over 50,000 seating capacity. It was also agreed that PCB will complete the construction work within five years.

In the past too, CDA and PCB had joined hands for the construction of a cricket stadium in Shakarparian. However, Supreme Court scrapped the project as it was being executed in a protected area. This time round, the CDA has chosen a site in the foothills of Margallas near D-12 in Zone-111 where it says sports and recreational facilities could be developed.

Surprised that nobody talks about Faisalabad anymore. It's one of your historic Test venues which has seen more Tests than any other venue save for Lahore and Karachi.

From the minutes of the Third PCB Management Committee meeting:

Considering that no international cricket matches take place during the summer season, a decision was made to explore in the northern part of the country. In this regard, Abbottabad Cricket Stadium was discussed as a potential venue for hosting international matches in the future. In this regard, conceptual plans for constructing a new pavilion at Abbottabad Cricket Stadium were also presented and the idea was well received and approved accordingly.

Our stadiums need to be in good condition for 2025. Can't give the parosis any more reason to throw their usual tantrums.

What will it take to build a stadium like OPTUS?

Trust me, this ground is the best for playing cricket and has some of the best facilities. The pitch is rough though. If you ever happen to be in Rawalpindi, I highly recommend you play cricket there at least once in your life.

We are heading towards the Champions Trophy, which is going to be hosted here in Pakistan but we still don't have a roof available at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

don’t worry hearing Mohsin speed Naqvi will renovate Pindi stadium in 6 months. Double decker stands, private boxes, chairs, the whole works 😂he promised a lot but sadly I doubt anything will happen. Hell, it’ll be a miracle if they can even install permanent chairs.

This is so sad to watch the crowd having to use plastic covers to save themselves from the rain. Rawalpindi is one of the stadiums that is a crowd puller but these kind of things should be addressed by PCB now as this is not good to see.

Traders for relocation of Rawalpindi cricket stadium

Shopkeepers along Food Street and Shamsabad Double Road in Rawalpindi are up in arms over the sealing of entrance gates and parking lots along Cricket Stadium Road. They are also protesting the suspension of public transport on Shamsabad Double Road during the ongoing cricket matches between Pakistan and New Zealand.

Expressing displeasure over the stringent measures enforced by the police and district administration, the shopkeepers lamented the disruption to their businesses. They noted that during match series, even carts selling fruits and vegetables in nearby areas are forced to relocate. Furthermore, Shamsabad metro station stops are temporarily closed, with passengers redirected to Faizabad station.

The shopkeepers and citizens are calling for the relocation of the cricket stadium from its current location to either Parade Ground or Shukarparian. They argue that for the past two decades, the stadium's presence has caused significant inconvenience, with roads, schools, and private offices shuttered during foreign team matches. The closure of Food Street and restrictions on road access exacerbate the situation for locals.

Fawad Khan, vice president of the Food Street Union, proposed that if Food Street must be closed during matches, they should be allowed to offer takeaway and parcel services with appropriate security measures.

Faisal Ali, a tea stall owner on Food Street, said that he is struggling to meet his household expenses due to the closure of his business during matches.

Akhtar Mehmood, Senior Vice President of the Shamsabad Double Road Anjuman Tajaran, highlighted the adverse impact on the approximately 500 shops, 100 private offices, and six private schools lining the road. He urged the immediate relocation of the cricket stadium to Parade Ground Islamabad to minimise security costs and preserve citizens' livelihoods.

Meanwhile, citizens are worried by the closure of the entrance gate to families visiting Allama Iqbal Park and the prohibition of vehicle parking in its lot. The closure of shops, offices, and Food Street along Shamsabad Double Road is expected to persist for the duration of the matches, until April 21.

What a sad and sorry sight. Takes me back to the poverty days of BCCI in 90s.

How can an international venue not have roofs? How do the fans manage in test matches and ODIs with the afternoon heat?

Pakistan should make a deal with the USA cricket and take the modular stadium in New York that will be dismantled after the T20 World Cup, would probably be cheaper than building a new stadium and it has a really good capacity seating and modern hospitality boxes.

I was honestly very surprised that NYC pulled this modular stadium off. Jeez - a stadium under 5 months .. I was so certain they couldnt do this and the venues will be changed but it's an amazing feat that they pulled off. This should be the template to spread the game. You can play pretty much anywhere in the world with this concept.

It’s the way forward, Qatar did it with the World Cup stadium in football and now this. Believe the one in New York cost around $30M from start to finish so it’s whether that would obviously be possible for other teams to do. I think the idea would be amazing for somewhere like Pakistan where we have lots of outfields and pitches but the stands and stadiums aren’t up to scratch.

Likely too late to make a deal with USA cricket or the ICC. They should have thought of this two years ago. Also, where would they build this thing? It needs to be close to a 5 star hotel, requires good road access, security, ability for fans to get to the matches in/out. As simple as it sounds, Pakistan wouldn’t be able to pull this off.

If one thing US does right and fast is make unlimited sports stadiums, across schools colleges cities.

Dallas has school football stadiums that will put cricket stadiums to shame

That's for sure. No country has the infrastructure ability like the USA has. A vast majority of big projects in the middle east and even China are designed by USA based architectural firms. But the modular concept should be good for other countries for cricket - especially as the labor costs are gonna be much much lower. USA has probably the highest construction labor costs in the world.

Daska cricket stadium in derelict state

The local administration and the Sports Board Punjab have seemingly failed to maintain the Nawaz Sharif Stadium in Daska, the only cricket stadium in the city.

Nearly three decades after its construction, the stadium has fallen into disrepair due to official negligence.

A local resident, Muhammad Sulman Alvi, told The Express Tribune that the Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) has exacerbated the situation.

"The TMA has constructed a main drainage and sewage well in the stadium, where sewage and dirty water are being discharged, turning it into a stinking swamp," he said. "All healthy activities related to sports and players have come to a halt. The standing water has destroyed the expensive grass on the ground, prepared at the cost of millions of rupees, and pits have appeared everywhere."

Alvi pointed out that overgrown bushes and weeds have given the place the look of a jungle. The diligently prepared pitch has also deteriorated. "Due to the lack of basic facilities, the cricket stadium was already abandoned for cricket and other sports," he added.

Tehsil Sports Officer Rana Shahid expressed his frustration regarding the municipality's encroachment on the stadium grounds.

"The main gates of the stadium have been taken over by the municipality, which has constructed offices in the parking lot, occupying the space. The main passageway gates have been permanently locked and welded shut, compromising the stadium's privacy," he lamented.

"We don't have any room for players to stay and change clothes. Players' cars and motorcycles are parked outside the stadium."

Adding to the stadium's woes, snakes have infested the open sewage, while equipment like rollers, screens, and tug boxes rusting due to stagnant water.

"Under these conditions, who will come to the stadium? Our only option now is to relocate it elsewhere," Shahid said.

“Cracks have appeared on all the walls, ceilings, and seating areas, further illustrating governmental negligence. The dirty and overflowing toilets have lost their doors and windows, with no proper arrangement for cleaning.”

The sports officer also pointed out that the municipality of Daska has set up its offices in the rooms of the stadium. “Valuable items purchased with public taxes are submerged in the sewage water filling the municipality's offices.”

In response, Daska Assistant Commissioner Anwar Ali Kanju noted that measures had been taken to stop sewage water from entering the stadium.

Despite the stadium currently being waterlogged due to recent rainfall, Kanju announced plans to develop new sports facilities and grounds for players.

A local lawyer, Ali Raza Syed, shared his childhood memories associated with the stadium. "Seeing the dilapidated condition of the stadium now makes me very sad. Due to the lack of playing space, a generational gap has emerged."

Furthermore, stray dogs, donkeys and livestock often graze on the stadium grounds. There is no other ground available in the entire city for important sports like football and hockey. The stadium now charges a fee for youth to play, leading them to prefer indoor games.

Some of the best hockey players came from Daska, but now the sport and football are almost extinct in the area. Another citizen, Rana Ahmad Siddique, said, “I used to wake up at 4:00 in the morning without an alarm, eager to head to the stadium.”

Local Government Minister Mian Zeeshan Rafiq’s Political Secretary Syed Dawood Shah said a state-of-the-art sports complex has been approved for Daska.

They have 5 months to complete this before CT. I am skeptical they can get it done. Plus, we haven’t even seen plans for Karachi/Pindi yet which are also supposed to be renovated for CT.

Pindi Stadium requires more attention... it doesn't have any shade for the crowd yet to protect them from sun. Meanwhile Karachi Stadium was recently renovated a few years ago so it would be okay if it gets skipped.

The pavilion was renovated in Karachi and they changed the roof but the enclosures are worse than the gorilla cages in Pakistani zoos. Plus the new roof now blocks the view for spectators sitting towards the back. The chairs at a minimum all need to be replaced, the cages removed or changed to something more elegant, etc etc. I do believe they have plans to renovate Karachi but given the time crunch it’s likely they skip it or only do a portion.

Reconstruction ceremony of Gaddafi Stadium: PM for modernising cricket stadiums

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that there is a real need to modernize cricket stadiums. While addressing the reconstruction ceremony of the Gaddafi Stadium, here Monday, the premier expressed satisfaction that steps are being taken to rebuild the infrastructure of the Gaddafi Stadium on modern lines.

Shehbaz Sharif said the reformation of the cricket team is a significant achievement and only talent should be brought forward, rejecting any recommendations. He emphasized that the team should be reformed and players should be selected on merit.

The PM also directed the Chairman of PCB to more focus on the cricket team. He expressed desire that the lost prestige and position of the cricket team should be returned.

Earlier, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said that Lahore, Rawalpindi and Karachi stadiums are being upgraded to as per the international standards for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2024 to be held in February wherein the eight best teams of the world will participate.

“Some elements wanted the Champions Trophy not to be held in Pakistan,” the PCB chairman said, adding: “The ICC has approved the budget for the Champions Trophy. FWO demolished the old structure of the stadium and the construction of the new stadium will be completed in five months.”

Naqvi also said a five star hotel is also going to be built near PCB Headquarter and a tunnel will help the players reach the stadium safely from the hotel wherein a modern stadium will be built in Islamabad as well.

Mohsin Naqvi accompanied by adviser to PCB Chairman on cricket affairs Waqar Younas told media “International players will also play in the Champions Cup. Likes and dislikes have been a part of our history. Hopefully, there will be improvement in the coming time,” Naqvi said.

Both also shared details with media about the latest developments and initiatives taken by the PCB.

Naqvi said Sana Mir has been told to work for women’s cricket as PCB has been taking steps for the improvement of women’s cricket.

Bdp pattern is a uk company who constructed many stadiums. They will be upgrading it. Hope they get it done

The upgrades etc cannot come soon enough for pak fans. These stadiums must be a constant source of embarrassment for pakistani fans given that even BD has fairly modern cricketing arenas. SL even further ahead.

There is no way PCB can finish the reconstruction within 6 months. Maybe they will go one stand at a time.

They have 5 months to complete this before CT. I am skeptical they can get it done. Plus, we haven’t even seen plans for Karachi/Pindi yet which are also supposed to be renovated for CT.
Remember the time they did Karachi National Stadium renovation. Took them over a year to add roof and plastic seats. PSL matches were played without complete roof

The upgrades etc cannot come soon enough for pak fans. These stadiums must be a constant source of embarrassment for pakistani fans given that even BD has fairly modern cricketing arenas. SL even further ahead.
There was no international cricket in Pakistan for a decade so that was an excuse. But not anymore. They need to modernize the Stadiums

They will do this in phases.. at most they will build the new pavilion building everything else will wait for all three stadiums.. the concern with this is there’s a good chance all three stadiums will be ripped up and incomplete especially is the chairman is changed

How much can be done if they employee a workforce to do this work in 3 shifts ie morning to afternoon, afternoon to night and night to morning for 24/7 for the next 5 months on all three stadiums?

Probably by atleast 50% but you have to keep in mind the cost of employing a larger workforce, logistics, complexity of work and quality control. Not as easy as it sounds in theory.

Major overhaul for Pakistan’s top cricket stadium

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed BDP to revitalise three major cricket stadiums in Pakistan, aiming to improve infrastructure and fan experiences. BDP Pattern, the sports and entertainment division of BDP, will focus on upgrading stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi ahead of the 2024-25 cricket season.

The project will enhance facilities at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi, Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Planned improvements include constructing additional tiers in at least two enclosures at Gaddafi Stadium, upgrading hospitality boxes at both the Gaddafi and National Bank Stadiums, adding new dressing rooms at the National Bank Stadium, and designing new roofs for the enclosures at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

PCB Chair Mohsin Naqvi highlighted the need for these renovations, noting that the current state of these venues has diminished the fan experience and discouraged spectators from attending live matches. He emphasised that the improvements are essential to attract not only local fans, especially younger generations, but also international visitors. Naqvi expressed concern over the neglected condition of Pakistan’s cricket venues, stating that none currently meet international standards. He affirmed the PCB's responsibility to upgrade the stadiums in preparation for the Champions Trophy next year.

Dipesh Patel, principal of BDP Pattern, expressed pride in collaborating with the PCB on these iconic cricket grounds, stating that the renovations would enhance the fan experience and support the growth of cricket for future generations.

EXPRESS TRIBUNE

Pakistan was awarded the CT a long time ago. There was a long period between the PSL and the start of Pakistan's home season, where alot of work could have been done. I don't know why it is now that the PCB has decided to start working on this with six months to go. Seems like they have been sleeping. Highly incompetent management to say the least.

Can the local guys from Lahore give some comments on the renovations. You think they will be completed on time?

What to expect from the renovations. How will the new stadium look like.

Looking forward to this tournament held in Pakistan, an icc event. Should be exciting tournament on good batting wickets with big scores. Hope by then BD-Pak direct flights can start so Bangladeshis can visit Pakistan for the tournament and general tourism.

Trust me, this ground is the best for playing cricket and has some of the best facilities. The pitch is rough though. If you ever happen to be in Rawalpindi, I highly recommend you play cricket there at least once in your life.
Why is grass so brown? Why not lush green? Most Pak pitches having this problem
