[PICTURES] The state of cricket stadiums in Pakistan

We should have a selection of three stadiums for SENA countries - Karachi, Lahore, and Multan.

For Asian teams, Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Faisalabad.

Yes don’t want to SENA teams playing in Pindi, think we would struggle massively there against the Aussie or Kiwi pace attacks. Imagine Jamieson and his thunderbolts

National Stadium is Pakistan fortress for sure.. but what other centers should we focus on

Hard to see cricket going to likes of Peshawar or Gawader or Hydrabad in next 5 years

The Stadiums as of now are

1) National Stadium - Karachi
2) Qadaffi Stadium - Lahore
3) Rawalpindi Stadium - Rawalpindi
4) Multan Stadium - Multan
5) Arbab Niaz Stadium - Peshwar
6) Iqbal Stadium - Faisalabad
7) Jinnah Stadium - Sialkot

which of these can be most suitable for us?

For likes of Eng, Aus, NZ, WI, SA, we should be focusing on spinning tracks so which ones of these can make that cut.

For SL, Bang and maybe WI as well, prepare green tracks?

Dont see cricket b/w Pak n India until modi is there so ...

Downside is that this will mean Pak playing a lot of cricket on spinning tracks which is not great for Fast bowling talent and also the batting wont get used to facing the bowlers on moving tracks and hence wont develop

Could be that we have "ATLEAST" a 3 match series and play 2 matches on rank turners, win and then take a chance on the green wicket

i know am being too negative but we need a good 2-3 years of solid wins

Pakistan is not a massive country like India so IMO 5-6 stadiums with top-notch facilities should be enough

1. Qaddafi Stadium is already there with probably the best facilities in the country, we can't do anything about the stands which are too far from the pitch. The Problem with the Qaddafi stadium is SMOG which will stop Lahore from hosting test matches during the winter season.

2. National Stadium does have all the facilities which Qaddafi stadium has & NSK is really our fortress & we should always play 1 test match in NSK against every team, NSK still needs a lot of renovation, those stands are too dark, maybe they could something about that & please get rid of those pink colored seats. They should also install seats in the whole stadium & they should do something about that horrible big screen, use some innovative way so that it doesn't block the view of a whole stand.

3. Pindi Cricket Stadium also has good facilities but they should really improve the drainage system & should install seats in all the enclousers & maybe a roof as well.

4. Multan Cricket Stadium looks good but PCB do need to install chairs in the whole stadium.

5. Arbab Niaz Stadium will probably the best stadium in Pakistan when it is completed but heard from multiple sources that the stadium is in quite a populated area & it will be difficult for PCB to host matches over there.

6. I don't have any idea about Iqbal Stadium Faislabad's facilities but heard facilities are ok but traditionally the pitch over there is quite awful & most of the matches end as a draw.

More than a specific stadium it depends on weather too. for seaming conditions you need to play matches in first half of year I.e. late January to May, which is late winter spring season. This is when you get rains and natural grass vegetation.

In the past we always played in autom season. I.e. September October November and December. this is the driest period of year. Lots of people complain that our grounds don't have much grass. well it needs water which is least available in this period of year. the result is that no matter how much water you poured on the pitch it lasts for just first hour of a match and then as you can't water the pitch area any more it becomes dry and grass dies down.

As far as Peshawar yes perception matters a lot. But hopefully it will not be too long before Peshawar gets to host a international match. However for now even the infrastructure is not yet ready so we can wait for little longer. Personally I would have preferred to develop a completely new stadium little bit out side of city. Peshawar is too congested and needs to grow out side its current limited space.

However the current situation has one major factor going for PCB. Limited crowd and security concerns. based on these PCB can host matches at least test match in some small city where ground and accommodation facilities are available. And in this case muzafarabad and gawader can be best possible options both have ground that can be upgraded in short period and also have good accommodation available.

Other cities may include Hyderabad mirpur AJK but I believe there is no good hotel there yet. even though there were plans by PC hotel chain to develop a hotel in these cities.

Gilgit-Baltistan govt plans to construct cricket stadium in Nagar

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government in Gilgit-Baltistan has planned to build a cricket stadium at Pisan in Nagar this year.

Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Muhammad Khalid Khurshid Khan called on Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ehsan Mani to discuss cricket promotion issues. He posted pictures of the meeting on Twitter.

During the meeting, it was decided that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government in Gilgit-Baltistan would plan a cricket stadium at Pisan in Nagar this year.

Would love to see the state of Hyderabad Cricket Stadium...I've heard its in bad shape.

Perhaps a local poster can put up some recent pictures please?

I’ve never understood why the seats in NSK are painted in rainbow colours? It looks awful can’t they make them the same colour?

Based on what i am seeing, it appears that it takes 2-3 years to build a stadium. The progress on most stadiums in Pakistan is awefully slow i.e. Rafi Stadium, Arbab Niaz Stadium, these stadiums have been under construction for 2-3 years and they are still in aweful condition. Is it because money is a problem or is it that the people involved are slow, lethargic who just wake up 1-2 months before a tournament to realize that they have a stadium to construct and complete?

Any update of Rafi Stadium?

Arbab Niaz Stadium is located in a very crowdy area. It can be risky.

I don't even know why they are bothering. That city literally has a category in their crime statistics for "rocket attacks". :91: I guess only for local matches then whatever.

It doesn't seem as if we have any other projects going on. Rafi looks to be a money laundering scheme, its crawling so lets just rule this one out.

I can't think of any others. Any solid upgrade plans for the existing stadiums? Probably not.

Yes it takes at max 3 years, like the FIFA ones in Doha, Qatar.

Rafi stadium looks like should finish in 1 years time. Only the roof and seats remain.

I don't think we will have any international matches in Peshawar for a good few years, sadly.

The Bahria Town Stadium in Karachi looks like it will be a superb stadium if it ever gets completed but I guess there will be disputes over ownership rights, revenue sharing etc and there won't be any international matches there either - possible Karachi Kings will play there in PSL.

This is from 27th Jan.

Does that look like it will complete within a year? I think not. Why only this since 2 years work?

Also on the company working on this has this on their website - https://www.sgh.com/projects/rafi-cricket-stadium

25k capacity? I thought it was 50k? This is 100% a money washing exercise. Quite pathetic actually how public corruption is in Pakistan.

Its disappointing. I think it started almost 3 years ago and still they are constructing it at snail's pace.

This 25K capacity is even a bigger shocker for me. Its initial design was beautiful, I don't know whether they are still planning to build it as per that design or they have changed that as well.

In the last decade, there was no 'home' cricket. So, it was understandable but now we need to focus on our cricket grounds and try to at least upgrade the current ones, if we cant build new ones.

Rafi Stadium is being built to essentially increase the market value of the houses in the sports city.

Lol at the innocence of people here surprised that a project by the thug Malik Riaz might turn out to be a corrupt scheme to whitewash his money :))

Right now Gadaffi is the crown jewel of Pakistani stadiums, its pretty decent and they’ve invested a lot to keep it in good shape. National stadium isn’t too bad, they could replace the seats and make other changes to keep it going. Where the investment is needed is updating Rawalpindi and make it two tier.. Faisalabad has potential as well but it’s been neglected. Multan is a beautiful ground, just need to add seats to some sections. Of course I’d love to see a new stadium in Islamabad and Karachi but unfortunately we don’t have the economic engine to build something unless it’s a gift from China. Keep in mind cricket boards are not in the business of building stadiums, so we can’t expect the PCB to do everything.

So they say it will be state-of-the-art. We shall see about that.

Only 2600 chairs? The rest are supposed to sit on concrete all day?

5 star accommodation - could we have both teams stay there for the duration of a test match?

I hope the boundary size is big, I hate small boundaries.

Random ground where Shoaibs domestic team used to practice. I don’t think even first class matches are played there often

LAHORE, Mar 25 (APP): Director General Sports Board Punjab (SBP) Adnan Arshad Aulakh presided over a meeting at National Hockey Stadium here on Thursday and reached an agreement on building a 5-Star hotel at Nishtar Park Sports Complex.

Pakistan Cricket Board’s senior General Manager Admin Col (retd) Ashfaq Ahmed, Consultant Abdul Ghafoor Bhatti, Director Admin Javed Chohan and other officials also attended the meeting.

The construction of 5-Star Hotel at Nishtar Park Sports Complex, High Performance Centre and issues related to LRCA ground were discussed during the meeting.

The alternate grounds for cricket clubs were also reviewed during the meeting. Sports Board Punjab and Pakistan Cricket Board have agreed to build a 5-Star hotel at Nishtar Park Sports Complex.

Addressing the meeting, Adnan Arshad Aulakh said several world class sports facilities have been provided in Nishtar Park Sports Complex and many international sports players used to visit here for sports events quite frequently.

“In such a situation, a 5-Star hotel was badly needed here. The security issue of international teams will also be resolved after the construction of a 5-Star hotel which will also provide a complete residence facility to world sports stars. In this way the authorities won’t need to block the traffic and other roads for the security of foreign sports teams”.

Pakistan Cricket Board’s senior General Manager AdminCol (retd) Ashfaq Ahmed, on this occasion lauded Sports Board Punjab’s step of 5-Star hotel at Nishtar Park Sports Complex. “Then there will be no security issue of international teams and it will help a lot in the promotion of cricket in the country”, he added.

The plans of building a five-star hotel at the historic Lahore City Cricket Association (LCCA) Ground appear to be in doubt, after opposition from officials in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Earlier, the Sports Board Punjab (SBP) had decided to make a hotel on the ground inorder to provide accommodation to foreign athletes that would not affect the daily lifestyle of the people in Lahore.

According to sources, PCB officials believe that using the ground for anything other than cricketing activities is not the right move. The PCB had already prepared plans to use the ground as part of the extension of the National High Performance Center.

The officials also believe that constructing a hotel on the ground citing accommodation or security concerns would be a futile endeavor. Nishtar Park is already plagued with various problems such as parking and creating a hotel will only widen the current issues while impacting the historic ground.

The Director General Sport Board Punjab Adnan Arshad had previously announced that a grant of Rs.30 million had already been issued for the construction of the planned five-star hotel.

The officials in the Sport Board have argued that all foreign teams would stay at the hotel during their stay in Lahore which would solve various issues such as security and providing ease of access to the people of Lahore.

The plans of creating a hotel on the historic ground had previously come under criticism from various other quarters of the cricketing community in Pakistan as well.

It must be noted that SBP had earlier issued a press release, stating that PCB had agreed to build the hotel after a meeting between the two parties on Friday.

Niaz Stadium Hyderabad

In reply to a question, Murad Ali Shah said he had held a meeting with the Pakistan Cricket Board to rehabilitate Niaz Stadium, Hyderabad. “I am still of the opinion that the PSL and international cricket matches must be organised in Hyderabad and we are working on it,” he said and added that due to the Covid situation the implementation of the proposal had been delayed

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said that Pakistan Peoples Party–led Sindh government was working on a plan to rebuild the historic Niaz Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad.

He was replying to a question asked by an ARY News reporter during an inauguration ceremony of Sindh Institute of Animal Health in Korangi held on March 2.

Murad Ali Shah said he had held a meeting with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to rehabilitate Niaz Stadium, Hyderabad.

“I am still of the opinion that the PSL and international cricket matches must be organized in Hyderabad and we are working on it,” he said and added that due to the Covid situation the implementation of the proposal got delayed.

Last year in February, Murad Ali Shah had stopped the construction of unauthorized sports courts at Niaz Stadium and announced to carry out the extension of historic cricket venue Niaz Stadium in consultation with the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Niaz Stadium History

Niaz Stadium was established in November 1961 by then-commissioner Hyderabad Niaz Ahmed. The inaugural first-class match was played here between South Zone and Pakistan Education Board on March 16-18, 1962.

It also hosted the first international Test between Pakistan and England on March 16-21, 1973. Niaz Stadium, in all, has hosted five Tests and seven ODIs till January 2008.

The Stadium was also the inaugural centre of the 1987 World Cup. The historic stadium holds the record of first-ever hat-trick of ODI by Jalaluddin.

The ground remained with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for 11 years until the municipal committee revoked the MoU arbitrarily on April 2, 2018 and seized control of it.

Pathetic stadium. Looks like a club level cricket ground tbh. I jus wonder why PCB schedule so many games here even when the outfield is poor and stadium has 90s standard facilities. Heck they've installed "shadi ki chairs" for the crowd. Our capital's twin has no proper cricket stadium, embarassing. Multan's stadium is prolly the best we've tbh.

Constructing, Renovating, Refurbishing a Stadium with Floodlights as per International ICC Standards is not an easy task. It takes atleast 1.5-2 years to build one stadium and a huge financial wallet.

Arbab Niaz is goona look good after these renovations. Two tiered with a ring of fire, looks like a cricketers hostel next door as well.
Hopefully that’s up to hotel standards for touring teams.

Muzaffarabad Cricket Stadium has floodlights. Not sure if the stadium is per international standards though

I get that but cricket is a multi million dollar business in Pakistan. Take a loan if they have to but there has to be at least 1 flagship 60k seater stadium build to todays standards.

I am sure the touring players are confused, such a huge cricket audience but the stadiums look like they are stuck in the 90s.

Jinnah stadium, Sialkot is being renovated...work has already commenced. They are also building a HPC as well as international level stadium..

PCB inviting sponsors to sponsor Stadiums

The PCB has released an advertisement calling for interested sponsors to take over the sponsorship of the National Stadium, Qadhafi Stadium and Pindi Stadium for the next 4 years from Jan 2022 to Jan 2026.

Not sure if this is feasible. Stadium upkeep is a very expensive proposition

If this is how we are going to get them to change Gadaffi Stadium's name then so be it.

no point building big stadiums if you can fill them asap or at least have 75% for most series

should have spent the money on sports science - truth is the most pakistani fans are happy to sit in the current stadiums , yet were lagging massively behind on sports science

Instead of two tier stadiums, we needs upgrades like stadium must a indoor facility for practise and gym., better pitches, and replace concerte slab seats with plastic seats.

1) I want to know why are our boundaries so far away from the crowds? There is a huge green gap between crowds and the rope.

2) Also you built roofs slightly slanting not right on top of the spectators.

PCB plans to construct a high-tech cricket stadium in Islamabad

With Pakistan set to host the Champions trophy in 2025, Ramiz Raja, Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) chairman has revealed plans to construct a high-tech stadium in the capital city.

Ramiz Raja had a news conference on Wednesday in which he addressed all of Pakistan's cricketing issues, the governing body's future objectives, and provided adequate solutions to the issues.

While on the issue of infrastructure, Ramiz Raja criticized the state of Pakistan's stadiums, claiming that they do not meet international cricketing standards.

According to Ramiz, "The seats are not good, the viewing galleries are not good either. There is absolutely nothing that is there which can attract sponsors. There are a lot of things which need to be fixed on a lot of different levels.”

Ramiz said that while winning the privilege to host the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 is a big win for Pakistan, the PCB must guarantee that the tournament is run at an international standard throughout. For which it is important to improve the state of the stadiums in the country.

"We have submitted two applications where we have inquired for a piece of land within Islamabad. We want to create a high-tech cricket stadium from the ground up and hopefully, prepare it by 2025 for the Champions Trophy," said Ramiz Raja.

In terms of future expansion, Ramiz stated that 70 additional rooms will be created in the NHPC to accommodate teams visiting for the Asia Cup, Champions Trophy, and other cricket games.

Islamabad should definitely get a stadium but hopefully PCB won't be able to acquire a land in or around shakarparian(which was the place they looked in 2010's if I am not wrong).

that area was already dugged. why was the stadium denied there? Was it because of the natural park that CDA didnt want anyone to touch it.

Is there any space near Jinnah Stadium, that place has huge parking and is an idea place for a cricket stadium if there is area around it that comes under CDA

Even if they get approval for the land it’s unlikely the stadium is built and ready by 2025. I hope they can pull it off but the cost will run in the hundreds of millions $$. Let’s see if RR can deliver on this, a stadium in Islamabad is ideal from a security perspective plus we need one in our capital.

as pakistan has its troubles, why are just talking about islamabad, karachi, lahore getting new stadiums, why not rawalpindi / faisalabad / multan / quetta / bahawalphur /

Jinnah Stadium doesn't serve any purpose, It would have been better if they did construct a proper cricket stadium in that area back when it was constructed. If PCB wants to build a stadium in Islamabad they should get land near the new airport in Islamabad.

There are so many housing projects popping up around the area that they can literally sign a partnership with any of them.
